Suggestions on student cars, please!

Hi Everyone! I am a postgraduate student from London, coming (back) to Malaysia for some academic research project. I need a car for about 6 months. The budget is low (around 10k, not more than 13k). I just want a vehicle to take me from A to B as will be moving around a lot and public transportation or a motorbike is not an option. I have driven in Malaysia before and have a Malaysian driver's licence.
Based on these criteria (in this order) what would you suggest?
1-price
2-safety
3-fuel economy
4-ride
5-re-sale value
6-low maintenance cost

I am Ok with used cars, but prefer newer than 2002 models; and cannot drive a Kancil (it will kill me!).
Any suggestions, please?
Thank you all for thoughtful comments
