PC freezes randomly, suspect HDD failure.

Hey I hope you guys might give me an idea on how to determine whats dying inside my rig.

This is the problem i'm facing. I've assemble my rig on last year August, so can said that everything inside is still brand new except for a couple of things.

But then, at about November last year, things starting to get a little weird, first of all, my pc starts lagging up for no reason when I'm opening up files or folders in windows, normally just a couple of seconds slower, so i brushed it off thinking i'm just running a lot of applications.

Then, slowly, i noticed that when im playing songs or movies, sometimes it will freeze up, meaning that everything will stop playing for a couple of seconds but then i can still move my cursor. slowly the freezing will get more frequent until it decides to autorestart. It happens a few more times at random and 1 day it showed BSOD after my pc hang totally after the freeze.

After the restart, it couldnt load into windows, and just shows a black screen after POST while the rig and all is running. I suspect that there might be something going on with my hdd due to the fact that 3 of them isnt brand new. Thus i unplugged the sata cables and plugged it back, magically windows is loaded again and everything goes fine.

This problem stopped thankfully for a couple of months meaning no restarts or BSOD, just that it continues to freeze every now and then which I will just switch off my pc for awhile and have it on again then things will go well.

But lately, the same problem have came back again, my pc will start freezing up sometimes hang when i'm accessing my files then for a couple of times it autorestart and couldn't load windows. so far i don see BSOD though, and i have untick the box that makes it automatically restart too. Normally after this happen I will just switch the pc off for awhile and turn it on again and everything will be fine.

There are a couple of factors I suspect that caused all this to happen,
1. Dying HDD. I have 3 harddisk. The oldest 1 is the Seagate 250GB then the Samsung 160GB follow by a Hitachi 1TB, I installed my OS on the Samsung 160GB if that helps. While the seagate and hitachi are for file storage only and downloads only.

2. Overheating. Might be due to the fact that I seldom turn off my pc and used it for downloading or torrents all the time.

3. PSU. it is about 2 year old, carry forward from my old rig. A 500W CM extreme power plus.

4. Graphic card. using an Asus 8800GTS, handed to me by a friend when he change his GFX.

The idle temperature for my processor is at +- 42C and on the gfx at 70C.

Here are my specs:
AMD Phenom 2 X4 955BE
MSI 770 C-45 mobo
2X2GB OCZ ddr3 rams
Asus 8800GTS (old)
160GB Samsung hdd (approx 4 years old)
250GB Seagate hdd (approx 3 years old)
1TB Hitachi hdd (approx 1 year old)
500W CM extreme power plus (approx 1.5years old)
CM690 casing with 5 fans

*only the mobo, proc and rams are brand new

This is what I get from the event viewer if it helps, will post up minidump if needed and run chkdisk again just to make sure tomorrow. (having mid term test at 2pm tml, so yeah cant do it now)

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

CODE

Log Name: System
Source: Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-Power
Date: 23/1/2011 3:32:31 PM
Event ID: 41
Task Category: (63)
Level: Critical
Keywords: (2)
User: SYSTEM
Computer: rickPC
Description:
The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first.
Wave slider in volume control

the "wave" slider in volume control just won't hold still, the slider just likes to drop back down everytime i raise it up to the max, i've tried everything, the slider just wont't stay still!

for example, whenever i raise the slider to the top, after a certain amount of time it would drops back all the way down, i would raise it again, and after a while the same thing would happen again.

now i don't have winamp or any other players install on my pc, i uses iTunes whenever i listen to music, so there's no way other software could have override my volume slider setting, so what could have caused this?

Further more after updating the sound driver to a newer version, the volume control will give out a "No audio mixer device installed" error, so i have to do a roll back to the driver. As such updating the sound driver is not an option for me.

BTW i'm using a Compaq Presario C795TU Notebook and the audio driver is Conexant High-Definition SmartAudio 221 Driver.

Please help!!!
