Teacher in Perak charged with trespassing into ex-boyfriend’s office, prohibited from approaching victim

SLIM RIVER, Sept 30 — A female teacher was charged in the Magistrate’s Court here today with trespassing into her ex-boyfriend’s office last March.

The accused, N. Retha, 41, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to her before Magistrate G. Phulrani Kaur.

Retha, a senior assistant for co-curricular activities, is alleged to have committed criminal trespass by entering the office of P. Navaneeth, 35, at about 3 pm at a clinic in the Muallim district on March 3.

She was charged under Section 447 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum jail sentence of six months or a fine of up to RM3,000, or both, on conviction.

The case was prosecuted by deputy public prosecutor Nor Syahirah Azahar, who offered bail of RM4,000 with one surety and an additional condition that the accused be prohibited from approaching the victim until the case is concluded.

Lawyer N. Villasini requested a lower bail, saying the accused is a single mother of two children, aged 14 and 16, has a father with a heart condition, and has served as a teacher for 21 years.

The court granted bail at RM2,000 with the additional condition that the accused is prohibited from approaching the victim until the case is disposed of.

It set Oct 18 for the next mention and document submission. — Bernama

Jail for China woman who rode bicycle with faulty brakes and caused pedestrian’s death in Singapore

SINGAPORE: A woman rode a bicycle with faulty rear brakes and ran into a 63-year-old pedestrian, who fell, hit her head on the ground, and subsequently died from a head injury.

On Friday (Sept 20), Li Lanying, 52, was sentenced to four weeks’ jail after pleading guilty to causing the older woman’s death by performing a negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide

Li, a Chinese national, had known for two to three months before the accident that her bicycle brakes were faulty, but chose not to repair it, the court heard.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Tan Jing Min said the accident took place on March 8, 2023, along Martaban Road, a single-lane two-way road, towards Balestier Road.

At around 9pm that night, Li had just finished her shift at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, where she was employed as a housekeeper, and was on her way home.

She was riding at a fast speed downslope as retiree Lee Lai Kuen, who was on a daily night walk with her husband, was crossing the road, said the DPP.

As Li got close to Lee, she applied her brakes but the bicycle failed to slow down as its braking system was defective, added the prosecutor.

Both women tried to avoid each other, but Li’s right handlebar hit Lee’s right arm, causing her to fall backwards and hit her head on the ground.

Li also fell off her bicycle.

Lee was unconscious when she was taken to hospital. She died on March 20, 2023.

The prosecutor said that Li did not repair her bicycle’s brakes, which she knew were faulty, because there were usually no pedestrians on the road when she commuted to and from work.

Seeking four to eight weeks’ jail for Li, DPP Tan said not only did she not fix the brakes, but she also travelled at a fast speed downslope during the time of the accident.

“Given these factors, the accused’s conduct borders on rashness,” said the prosecutor.

In mitigation, defence lawyer Lim Lei Theng said while she accepts that her client was negligent, the manner in which the accident occurred does not reflect a high culpability on Li’s part.

She sought leniency for her client, noting it was an accident and that Li and the victim were both trying to avoid each other.

Those convicted of causing the death of a person by committing a negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide can be jailed for up to two years, fined, or both. - The Straits Times/ANN

Out of 14 participants, including school officials, a lawyer, and a local police officer, eight concluded it was not bullying.

The local education bureau echoed this, stating the boy’s actions “did not meet the standards of school bullying.”

A staff member from the education bureau noted that both students remain in the same grade but are no longer in the same class. New officials have been assigned to investigate the matter.

The case has drawn strong reactions online, with many finding the outcome shocking and ridiculous.

One user on Douyin remarked: “The authorities are correct. This was not school bullying; it was a crime of assault and intentional injury.”

Another added: “The school should not decide if it was bullying; the law must hold the boy accountable.”

Wang Qionghua, a lawyer from Guangdong Zhiheng Law Firm, emphasised that under China’s Provisions on the Protection of Minors on Campus, school bullying involves intentionally causing harm or financial loss.

"However, the business owner failed to present a valid Malaysian Halal Certification, and accordingly, legal action was taken under the Trade Descriptions Act (Certification and Halal Labeling) 2011 for suspected use of the halal logo without permission," he said in a statement today.

South Korea removed 1,300 cameras from its military bases after discovering they're designed to feed back to a Chinese server

SEOUL, Sept. 13 (Yonhap) -- The military has recently taken down more than 1,300 surveillance cameras installed at various bases, including those near the border with North Korea, after discovering they were Chinese-made equipment, a military official said Friday.

In late July, military and intelligence authorities found out the surveillance cameras supplied by a South Korean company were produced in China during military equipment examinations, according to the official.

The military has uninstalled all of the equipment in question and is replacing it with domestic equipment due to security concerns. Currently, about 100 of them have been newly installed.

"The CCTVs at issue were found to be designed to be able to transmit recorded footage externally by connecting to a specific Chinese server," the official said. "No data has actually been leaked."

The official said the surveillance cameras were not used to monitor the border with North Korea but for military training grounds and base fences.

The company that supplied the cameras is suspected to have falsified the equipment's country of origin, and the military is considering taking legal action against it.
