Scientists find a cheaper way

Chemist Mark E. Thompson holds new copper-based LEDs invented by him and a team of chemists that could be a cheaper option for TV and smartphone screens to produce the color -- including blue -- and light. Right now, the industry relies on iridium, an expensive precious metal, for LED light and color. Credit: Mark E. Thompson, USC Dornsife

TLDR

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

USC Dornsife chemists have found a cheaper way to light up smartphone and TV screens, which could save manufacturers and consumers money without affecting visual quality.

Copper is the answer, according to their study, published Feb. 8 in the journal Science.

"The current technology that is in every Samsung Galaxy phone, high-end Apple iPhone and LG TV relies on iridium compounds for the colors and light on OLED screens," says Mark E. Thompson, a chemist at USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences and the Ray. R. Irani Chairman of the Occidental Petroleum Corporation Chair in Chemistry.

"We have been using iridium because you get a highly efficient light emission, but it is the rarest naturally-occurring element on Earth," Thompson says. "One of our challenges has been to come up with an alternative that is more abundant."

Prior attempts to generate a copper-based OLED failed. The copper complexes in those studies had weaker structures. The molecules were unstable, with shorter lifetimes than the iridium compounds.

Iridium's link to dinosaurs

Copper definitely solves the problem of availability since it is a plentiful metal worldwide. Iridium, on the other hand, is found in only a few places—mostly South Africa and parts of Asia.

The most widely-accepted hypothesis that explains iridium's scarcity and its origins is that it traveled here on a meteor—the same one that wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago.

Unless another meteor like that hits Earth, iridium will continue to dwindle in supply. Demand for it is only increasing as smartphones, TVs and other devices that feature OLED screens gain popularity.

OLEDs have come to replace LED LCD screens. In an OLED screen, each pixel generates light, while in the LCD screens, pixels are illuminated by an LED backlight.

Blue chemistry

Besides its scarcity, iridium has another drawback for OLED technology that has perplexed chemists for more than two decades: weaker molecules for generating blue light.

When the molecules from the iridium compounds are excited, they generate two of the OLED screen's primary colors—red and green—very efficiently, quickly and in devices that give very long operational lifetimes, says Thompson, whose lab engineered the iridium-based red and green molecules.

The third requisite color, blue, has been the bane of OLED technology because blue emissive OLEDs have a short lifetime. Thompson explained that the bonds within the blue molecules tend to break down. Blue molecules also require more electricity than the green and red molecules to energize them. Since blue is among the primary colors for OLED, its poor performance can affect a range of colors that you see on a screen that contain any blue.

Thompson's team may have solved that, too, with their new copper complex—a more rigid molecular complex than the prior, failed types of copper compounds, which were weaker. The new compound's rate of light emission also matches iridium's, so the energy is converted efficiently into light and color, the chemists found.

"Our paper lays out the basic design rules for obtaining iridium-like emission efficiencies out of copper, with colors ranging from blue to green and yellow," said Rasha Hamze, the study's lead author and a USC Dornsife alumna who recently began working for Universal Display Corporation.

"Achieving efficient blue emission out of copper compounds opens up entirely new possibilities for tackling the problem of short lifetimes in blue devices."

The team at USC has submitted a patent application for their copper compound.

Thompson says that next, he wants to see if these copper compounds could also lead to the creation of more energy-efficient lighting.

https://phys.org/news/2019-02-scientists-ch...led-screens.amp

True to what we have heard before, the new phone does come with not one, not two but three cameras on its back.

According to the specs sheet, the setup consisted of the main 24MP f/1.7 snapper alongside an 8MP f/2.4 120-degrees camera and 5MP f/2.2 depth camera. They are being arranged in vertical order with the depth camera being on top before followed by the main and ultra-wide cameras.

Soon will be 4 camera then 5 and so on.. max how many?? We are all aware and know that Bahasa Melayu is the national language, as enshrined in the Constitution, and there is no restriction on the use of English in the learning process in this country," he said.

"I don't know it is restricted (to use English). (But) There are certain subjects which we are using English like Science and Mathematics. There is no restriction stated in the Constitution on the use of English," he said, after officiating at the Forum Malaysia Day organised by United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (Upko) at Likas Square Condotel Hotel, Monday. (pic)

Deputy Chief Minister cum Trade and Industries Minister Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau, had earlier referred to the Education Ministry's written reply recently that the use of English as a medium of instruction in schools (in Sabah and Sarawak), would violate the Federal Constitution, National Language Act 1963/67 and the Education Act 1996.

"If the Education Ministry stated that it is unlawful for English be used in Sabah, I think we cannot allow it and we need to undo it...because for example how will our young people be able to work in private firms or organisations where English is part of the requirement," Tangau had said.

Shafie said; "If we look from the perspective of the Malaysia Agreement 1963, English is still widely use on the daily basis. There is no restriction and limitation on its use. Even in the Dewan Rakyat, if we asked for the Speaker permission, we can speak in English...so there is no restriction, limitation, in using the language.

"That's why we are going to have all the vocational schools also use English in certain subjects in our effort to upskill our young people. It is something that needs to be done."

He said the State Government will look into it if there is a need for a change in law on the matter.

On Tangau's call for the State Government to strengthen its position with regards to the State's oil and gas, Shafie said apparently, he was made to understand by the State Attorney-General that "we do have a Mineral Enactment in Sabah. So I think I will look into it, I will ask the AG to look into the detail parts of it to see if there is any loophole. If it is there then we just need to reactivate it to make sure Sabah, like Sarawak, has the power," he said.

On the forum, Shafie said he welcomed the effort by Upko in organising it so Sabahans can get to know and find out, as well as formulating ways towards making success of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 agenda.

http://www.dailyexpress.com.my/news.cfm?NewsID=127026

Well.... I'm stick with English. Bahasa Melayu is just an option for me 😎

Qualcomm Announces New aptX Adaptive

During IFA 2018, Qualcomm announced a new wireless audio codec created for the wire-free music listening experience. The aptX Adaptive standard aims to deliver a robust, hi-res and glitch-free listening experience to the masses.

According to Qualcomm, the new codec is designed “to adjust automatically to provide optimum audio quality depending on what content is being played on the device and the external radio frequency (RF) environment.” To put it simply; audio played through a device with the new codec automatically adjusts the volume and quality of the audio.

The new codec will also automatically select between low latency and high-frequency transmissions on the same built-in antenna without the user fiddling with its settings. More importantly, aptX Adaptive will also support older codecs such as aptX and aptX HD.

Qualcomm said that the new codec will be introduced with a yet-to-be announced chipset, which presumably is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855. This means that the first devices featuring the new codec will only be out sometime early next year. Which in our estimation, would also be around CES 2019.

The development of aptX Adaptive also marks the beginning of the demise of the 3.5mm audio jack. As it stands, many premium smartphones in today’s market ship come without a 3.5mm headphone port. As smartphone makers are opting to creating a more seamless and wireless ecosystem with their phones.

SOS: https://www.lowyat.net/2018/169055/qualcomm...-via-bluetooth/

Those who laughed and bashed Apple for removing headphone jack, now you going to eat back your shit as Qualcomm going to the same way.. soon most of the new phone will come with no headphone jack. LOL.. 🤣
