GEORGE TOWN: Divyang Hong speaks perfect Mandarin, so when he saw advertisements offering rooms to rent only for “male Chinese”, he was confident that he fit the bill. But he was in for a surprise. He contacted about 10 prospective landlords in Bukit Mertajam, all of whom wanted only “Chinese male” tenants. Each time, he was turned down, with most of them hanging up when Hong revealed that he was not a pure Chinese. “Only two people allowed me to speak right until the end before letting me explain about my race. The other seven to eight did not bother and decided to quickly cut me off,” he told FMT of his experience hunting for a room in Penang. The 25-year-old had come from Sungai Petani to Penang to take up a job as a programming tutor. Being a “Chindian”, a common reference to those of Chinese and Indian parentage, Hong’s looks betray his flawless Mandarin. Hong said he had no choice but to ring up the rooms listed for Chinese, as almost every listing had a racial preference. “I am not really a Chinese looking Chindian, but I thought by virtue of my dad and grandad being Chinese, I would qualify on a technicality,” said Hong, who said the rooms were advertised on online sites such as mudah and iBilik. “The owners wanted a young working professional, and I was. And they wanted a Chinese person, and I am, too. “I spoke in Mandarin also. So, I checked all the boxes,” he said. Hong said each time he spoke in Mandarin, the owners were agreeable on all matters including the rental amount. “After sorting out all the details with my prospective landlord, I thought I will be honest and tell them I am of mixed race. I tell them ‘I am not exactly pure Chinese but mixed’. “They would then reply: ‘Mixed ah… then ah we must see. We do not want to rent out to mixed people, we want to rent out to a Chinese-Chinese’.”

Hong said he decided to tell them so that they would not be shocked when they saw him in person. Hong, an engineering graduate, worked for a year as an engineer, but decided to take up a temporary job. He now stays at a house belonging to a family friend. Hong’s paternal grandfather was from Tongshan, China. Hong also speaks fluent Tamil. He said the Chinese side of his family also speak Tamil, having mingled with the Indian estate community in Sungai Batu, not far from Sungai Petani.

A CONSTITUTIONAL crisis could be looming between the newly-elected Pakatan Harapan government and the Malay rulers over the appointment of the new attorney-general.

More than 10 days ago, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad wrote to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong asking that he remove Apandi Ali as the A-G and replace him with top lawyer and constitutional expert Tommy Thomas, the unanimous choice of all PH leaders.

Amanah, Bersatu, DAP, and PKR felt that the appointment of a respected legal name would be the right signal to send to Malaysians and the rest of the world that the new government was serious about reforming the country's institutions.

Also, this appointment would ensure the presence of a skilled litigator in the chambers to handle all high-profile cases, including the prosecution of those involved in the 1MDB scandal.

But that letter from Dr Mahathir to the King has not been acted on, leading to a standoff between the popularly-elected government and the palace.

Instead, there have been messages relayed from the palace, seeking that PH drop its choice of Thomas.

Dr Mahathir was asked to consider several candidates, including a former high court judge and a serving court of appeal judge.

The Malaysian Insight understands that other Malay rulers have also supported the King's position, adamant that the A-G should be a Malay/Muslim.

This impasse and possible constitutional crisis was alluded to by two noted bloggers close to PH.

In a post titled "Another Crisis Brewing: Country is Not Out Of Danger Yet”, Syed Akbar Ali said that Dr Mahathir's choice for the A-G position was being blocked because he was not a Malay or Muslim.

"There is nothing in the federal constitution which says that non-Malays and non-Muslims cannot be appointed as the attorney-general, " he noted, adding that cabinet and key civil service appointments were the sole discretion of the PM.

Dr Mahathir and PH leaders have refused to back down. They still believe that Thomas is the best man for the job. The plan is to offer the 66-year-old a two-year contract as the A-G. He ‎wants to return to private practice after that.

At the core of this standoff is the question: Should key appointments to the government be the purview of a popularly-elected prime minister, or must he bow to the wishes of a constitutional monarch?

‎Blogger Kadir Jasin noted that the federal constitution puts clear limits on the authority of a constitutional monarch.

As for this notion that all key positions should be held by Malays, the former newspaper editor offered a scathing response.

"What's the use of having Malays in high positions if that Malay is cruel, corrupt, and someone who collaborates with thieves and speculators?” he asked, adding that integrity was more important than race.

Political observers said that the Malay rulers had no reason to worry about Malay rights being overlooked under a non-Malay A-G.

The duty of looking after Malay interests and Islam can easily be ‎handed over to the Solicitor-General.

Observers also warn that the Malay rulers should be careful because there is already a view among Malaysians that there was an unnecessary delay by the palace in swearing in Dr Mahathir as prime minister after GE14.

Given the euphoria in the country and the reservoir of goodwill and affection Dr Mahathir has earned from ordinary Malaysians for saving the country from Najib Razak, ‎it is clear who they will support in this impasse. – June 2, 2018

iPhone X just went on sale today in a whole bunch of different countries but Malaysia isn’t one of them. It’s coming, it’s just not here yet. This usually means, for reasonable people, that we’ll have to wait a while longer for Apple’s most anticipated iPhone since the original.

But the thing about us humans is, some aren’t reasonable. Some of us are willing to pay way more than anyone probably should for a smartphone, just so they can be the first. And that’s where scalpers thrive. People like this guy, who’s selling a 256GB iPhone X for nearly RM10,000.

Yep. RM9,888. Apparently, this guy spent 3 days queuing in Singapore so he could be one of the first to get his hands on these devices, which is pretty believable considering the queues we’ve seen in front of the Singaporean Apple Store. Crazy price mark up aside, you gotta give him props for his dedication.

But that’s besides the point. The thing we’re wondering now is: Who on earth would pay RM10k for the opportunity to own a mass-produced smartphone a little bit earlier than the rest of the country? I mean, iPhone X is almost certainly coming to Malaysia and the 256GB model will retail for RM5,899.

Doesn’t seem worth it to me. I’d rather wait, but maybe I’m not seeing the whole picture. What do you guys think? Do you know someone who would pay that much money for an iPhone X? Let me know in the comments below.
