Man slits nephew’s throat with cleaver

KOTA KINABALU: A four-year-old boy died after his throat was slit by his uncle shortly before the family broke their fast at a restaurant at Telupid, 195km from here.

In the 6.10pm incident on Monday, Mohamad Khairul Aize Abdullah was playing by himself around his mother’s restaurant while everyone was busy preparing for the breaking of fast, when his 23-year-old paternal uncle beckoned him to the back of the restaurant.

It is believed he then used a meat cleaver to slit the nephew’s throat.

The boy’s screams alerted his mother, who rushed him to hospital. However, Mohamad Khairul was pronounced dead upon arrival.

It was believed the unemployed suspect was of unsound mind.

Beluran district police chief Supt V. Sivanathan said the suspect did not make any attempt to escape and was caught by people at the restaurant immediately after the incident before being handed over to police.

“We will be sending him for psychiatric evaluation,” he said, adding that the victim’s body had been sent to the Duchess of Kent Hospital in Sandakan for post-mortem.

No motive has been established. A cleaver believed to be the murder weapon was recovered from the scene.

Main usage:
1) Terrain: tar road / concrete sidewalk (at least 1 hour walking time per day, that's why need something durable)

Malaysians are said to be linked to the group. One was believed to have been the suicide bomber who killed 25 Iraqi policemen last month while police here arrested three local men, believed to be members of the group, earlier this month.

Citing the economic and political challenges that Egypt faced before 30 June, El-Sisi vowed to preserve the interest of all Egyptians "without the exclusion of anyone".

He further stressed the need to preserve the rights of the poor, promising them a better life within four years.

"I always pray for God to help me in my mission and help me be worthy of your trust," he added.

Penang assembly protest leader a MAS employee

DAP has identified one of the men who barged into the Penang state assembly on Wednesday as an employee of Malaysia Airlines (MAS), and has called on the national carrier to take disciplinary action against its employee.

Jelutong MP Jeff Ooi at a ceramah in Island Glades last night said Penang Umno Youth deputy chief Jasmin Noordin, who had burst into the state assembly with 11 others, worked in the airline's Human Resources Department.

"I found out that he is working for an airline that is almost bankrupt as a high-ranking officer," he said.

Jasmin and 11 others had barged into the house about 2.15pm demanding to see Seri Delima assemblyman R.S.N. Rayer, who had said “Umno celaka” (Umno be damned) at the sitting a day before.

More than 30 other people, including members of Umno Youth, Perkasa and Gabungan Pelajar Melayu Semenanjung Penang branch, had protested outside the building in Lebuh Light, hurling insults at Rayer, who was not present at that time.

Mob storms Penang assembly

A group of 30 stormed the Penang legislative assembly at Lebuh Light this afternoon and disrupted the sitting, demanding to see Seri Delima assemblyman R.S.N. Rayer.

They were furious that Rayer said “Umno celaka” (damn Umno) at the assembly yesterday.

At 2.15pm, the group approached the building and shook the gate, damaging it in the process.

Several men managed to break through and ran into the building.

They made it into the house, where the assembly was sitting, and demanded for Rayer.

They were escorted out 10 minutes later.

Shouting "Rayer celaka, Rayer celaka (damn Rayer)", the group lead by Ahmad Yakqub Nazri, a leader from the Malay group Gabungan Pelajar Melayu Semenanjung Penang branch, accused the Penang government of racism.

"If you are a man, repeat what you said out here... we are not afraid of any reps inside (the house).

"This won't end here. We will find him. He won't live in peace if he doesn't apologise.

"He has insulted our forefathers, too, the people who fought for independence... we remind the PAS and PKR (Malay) reps that their forefathers also were from Umno," he said.

Jasmin Noordin, Penang Umno Youth vice-chief, also demanded an apology from Rayer.

Businessman Mohammed Abdul Ghani Jiman, a controversial figure in Penang who once sent a coffin to then Komtar rep Ng Wei Aik in 2011, called Rayer a pariah.

Rayer, from DAP, used "Umno celaka" (damn Umno) when he accused Umno of stoking racial sentiments.

Rayer said a group of demonstrators in Seberang Jaya had held up a banner that read “Because of DAP leaders' mouth, May 13, 1969 happened...Want some more?” at a rally on January 18.

The January rally was organised by Malay non-governmental organisations unhappy with Machang Bubuk assemblyman Lee Khai Loon who had organised a “I love Kangkung” flashmob several days earlier.

An effigy of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak fed with kangkung (water spinach) featured prominently at the flashmob organised in response to Najib's claim that the government was always blamed when price of goods and services went up but not when it was lower.

Meanwhile, Penang Umno liaison committee chairman Datuk Zainal Abidin Osman, who expressed his party's anger, disappointment and unhappiness with Rayer, said the DAP rep had gone overboard.

"Penang Umno condemns Rayer for his remark.

"His words were too much, uncivilised, insolent and rude... it is unbecoming of a people's rep and a lawyer to use such words.” – May 21, 2014.

Armed gunmen loyal to rogue General Khalifa Haftar attacked Libya’s parliament on Sunday, announcing its suspension. Forces loyal to Haftar claim to be purging the nation of Islamist militias while authorities accuse them of staging a coup.

Two people were killed and 55 others injured in the clashes in Tripoli’s city center following the attack on parliament, Reuters quoted the country's justice minister, Saleh Mergani, as saying. The minister also called on all parties to put down their weapons and begin dialogue, according to his televised news conference.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the health ministry said up to 66 people were wounded in the fighting.

A Libyan colonel loyal to Haftar denied the move was a coup and stated that parliament has no legitimacy and should hand over power to the 60-member body that was recently elected to rewrite Libya's constitution.

"We, members of the army and revolutionaries (former rebels), announce the suspension of the General National Congress," Mokhtar Fernana said in a statement broadcast on two private TV channels, according to AFP.

The justice minister condemned the attack on parliament, as well as the claim that parliament’s operations had been suspended. Marghani said that Libya "condemns expression of political opinion with armed force,” adding that Haftar’s Sunday attack was not connected to his Friday assaults in Benghazi.

Details of the Sunday attack are unclear, but Haftar's spokesman said the general's forces were responsible, adding that the assault was part of their 'Dignity of Libya' campaign to rid the country of all Islamist militants.

"These are members of the Libyan National Army," Mohamed al-Hejazi said. The Libyan National Army is the name of the irregular forces loyal to Haftar.

The Libyan National Army also rejected recently appointed Ahmed Maiteeq as the country's new prime minister on Sunday, according to AFP.

Student falls to her death at Menara Umno in PG

GEORGE TOWN: A security guard at the 21-storey high Menara Umno received a rude shock at about 7.40am Monday after he heard a loud thud.

"Upon checking the premises, I found a body of a young woman lying on the floor beside the building.

"The impact had also damaged a zinc roof of an empty storage building beside the Menara Umno," said the guard, who wished to remain anonymous.

The body, whose identity has yet to be identified, was believed to be in her 20s. She was believed to be a law student studying at a college in Menara Umno.

A check by the authorities found a pair of shoes at the 18th floor of the building.

Police, who arrived at the scene, were seen seizing a silver Perodua Viva believed to be the car driven by the deceased.

The car was parked by the side of the Menara Umno building. It was also believed that the student had left her bag in the car.

Gunmen kill Pakistan lawyer

Wednesday’s killing of Rashid Rehman in the southern city Multan of was the first time a lawyer has been killed for taking on a blasphemy case, police said.

Rehman had been representing Junaid Hafeez, a lecturer in English accused by hardline student groups of making blasphemous remarks against the Prophet Mohammed in March last year.

Hafeez had been in prison without being able to find a lawyer until Rehman agreed to represent him in February.

Blasphemy carries the death penalty in Pakistan. The accused are often lynched or languish for years in jail without trial because lawyers are too afraid to defend them. Rights groups say the laws are increasingly used to seize money or property.

Judges have previously been attacked in Pakistan for acquitting blasphemy defendants and two politicians who discussed reforming the law were shot dead.

"The attackers used knives to stab people at the station exit, and detonated explosives at the same time," Xinjiang's local government portal said, adding the injured had been taken to hospital. "The explosion at Urumqi South Railway Station was a serious and violent terrorist attack."
President Xi urged "decisive actions against violent terrorist attacks" following the incident.

It was not immediately clear who the attackers were or how many orchestrated the attack, but it was reminiscent of a similar incident in March which stunned China. A group of knife-wielding Uighurs slashed at commuters, killing 29, at a train station in Kunming, which was also condemned as a premeditated terrorist attack by the Chinese government.

On Wednesday, photographs that circulated on social media showed blood on strewn luggage and charred debris in front of the railway station exit in Urumqi.

The station reopened two hours after the explosion, according to state media.

Education Ministry says no to use of school hall

The Education Department has rejected the use of a school in Kuala Lumpur for a memorial service for Karpal Singh (pic) as it is perceived as a political event, said its organisers, DAP, at a press conference today.

DAP said the Education Ministry has denied it the use of SJKC Chung Kwo in Jalan Loke Yew for Karpal’s memorial event. The Bukit Gelugor MP and veteran lawyer died in a car crash last Thursday.

Acting DAP chairman Tan Kok Wai said that prior to this, the party had always used the school hall for various programmes, but was informed by the school authorities today that the ministry had rejected the application.

"We submitted the request on Monday, but at 9am today, it was rejected," Tan told reporters at the DAP headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today.

The party had often used the hall for its fund-raising activities and had also raised funds for the construction of the school hall.

Tan, however, did not blame the school authorities as they had to abide by the ministry's orders.

Instead, he said that this appeared to be a political agenda by the Barisan Nasional government.

"There is surely a political agenda here, but this is not even a political event, it is a gathering to honour the late Karpal Singh.

"They not only feared him when he was alive, BN is also scared of him after his death.”

Given the objection by the ministry, the memorial event will now take place at the Kuala Lumpur Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall at 8pm tomorrow.

Those expected at the event include Karpal's son, Gobind Singh Deo, opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, national laureate Datuk A. Samad Said, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, former Malaysian Bar president Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan, DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang and Pas deputy president Mohamad Sabu. – April 23, 2014.

Muslim NGO Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) has taken offence that a church in Seremban used Bahasa Malaysia to promote its Easter musical which will be held later this week.

In a report on its website, Isma Seremban chief Zamani Ibrahim questioned why the church is using the national language in its posters to promote the Christian event, suggesting that the open promotion, in a public space, is to encourage non-Christians to attend the musical.

Zamani questioned why the Malay language is used to promote the event, when Christians are largely made up of Chinese and Indians.

"The majority of Christians in this country are from the two races. The main language they use among themselves is English.

"Therefore it raises questions why the posters promoting the Easter musical is in Malay," he said.

Zamani urged the Negeri Sembilan Islamic Affairs Department (JHEINS) to monitor the event, adding that the Easter celebraton was against Islamic beliefs.

Malaysian on literary award shortlist

Author Tan Twan Eng continues to gather accolades for his The Garden Of The Evening Mists, which was shortlisted earlier this week for the prestigious International Impac Dublin literary award.

Announced on April 9, the shortlist includes both illustrious names such as Juan Gabriel Vasquez (The Sound Of Things Falling) and Karl Ove Knausgaard (A Death In The Family) as well as debut authors like Donal Ryan (The Spinning Heart) and Patrick Flanery (Absolution).

The Garden Of The Evening Mist was previously shortlisted for the 2012 Man Booker Prize, and won both the Man Asian Literary Prize and the Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction last year. This is Tan’s second novel, after The Gift Of Rain in 2007.

Hailed as one of the world’s richest literary prizes, the Impac comes with a ‚100,000 (RM450,000) prize. Nominees are decided by librarians from around the world, with 100 library systems in 39 countries participating this year. The winner will be announced on June 12 in Dublin, Ireland.

Past recipients of the award include Nobel Prize in Literature laureates Herta Müller and Orhan Pamuk, as well as Colm Toibin, Alistair McLeod and Per Petterson.

Judging the awards this year will be a panel made up of, among others, acclaimed writers such as Tash Aw, Giles Foden and Catherine Dunne.

Hypocrisy 101 - Malaysia calls for transparent

"In this regard, we call on the implementation of past resolutions on the issue for future selections and appointments of the secretary-general," he said in his statement at the ad-hoc working group on the revitalisation of the General Assembly in New York on March 4.

In his speech, which was faxed to Bernama here today, Raja Reza also reiterated Malaysia's recommendation that the president of the General Assembly (PGA) should be allocated the necessary resources needed for him or her to perform the role.

"The role and activities of the PGA continues to increase over the years. Today, we see a greater number of issues and agenda items being considered by the General Assembly when compared to a few years ago," he added.

Raja Reza said Malaysia's delegation also underscored the importance of conducting the annual elections of the non-permanent members of the UN Security Council (UNSC) and members of the Economic and Social Council earlier than October, he said.

According to him, Malaysia believed that such an arrangement would allow in-coming non-permanent members of the UNSC to make better preparations to helm their responsibility.

He pointed out that by bringing the election date forward, the members concerned would also have ample time to strengthen their missions in New York and allow their officers to familiarise themselves with the wide ranging issues in the council.
