Police confirm receiving report on five armed men in Lahad Datu

LAHAD DATU, May 15 — A plantation worker lodged a police report after stumbling upon five armed men wearing camouflage pants at Block 8, Felda Sahabat 2 Oil Palm Plantation in Cenderawasih here yesterday.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Ramli Din when contacted today confirmed they received a police report lodged by the 52-year-old man and investigation was underway from all aspects.

“I will not underestimate the allegation and detailed investigation will be conducted. Security in the east coast of Sabah is still under control,” he said.

It was understood that the complainant came across these five men around 6.20pm while working on the banana crops at the riverbank area at the plantation.

The gunmen who noticed the complainant asked if he was an Indonesian or a Filipino.

Upon hearing that the complainant said he was a Filipino, the men began to speak in Tagalog and one of them said that they had no other intention except to save people in Sabah and said 37 people have already landed on the beach. — Bernama

‘Mega MyDaftar’ campaign to reach Indians facing documentation woes, Subramaniam says

PUTRAJAYA, May 15 — The ‘Mega Mydaftar’ campaign in 23 places nationwide from next month is expected to reach every citizen of Indian descent who do not have any documentation of identity in the country, said MIC president Datuk Seri Dr S Subramaniam.

He said the campaign, which would start from June 3-26, received the full support of the National Registration Department (NRD) and Home Ministry as well as the involvement of Indian non-governmental organisations that had branches at the district, state and national level.

More interesting, he said, the massive campaign was also fully endorsed by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also Home Minister, which would ensure the relevant agencies resolve the long standing issue plaguing the Indian community in the best way.

“Hence I hope we will reach every Malaysian of Indian parentage at evey place to enable those with problems to come forward and register with Mega Mydaftar.

“Even though the registration period is short, I am confident it can be successful with the participation of the stakeholders in the campaign,” he told a media on the ‘Mega Mydaftar’ campaign here today.

Under recent changes to the Public Order Act, foreigners are not allowed to assemble at the Speakers’ Corner, where the Pink Dot rally is held.

In a Facebook note on Sunday, the event’s organisers said they received a reminder from the police that with the changes in the law, the police will no longer distinguish between participants and observers, and regards anyone who turns up at a Speakers’ Corner event to be part of an assembly.

In previous Pink Dot events, while foreigners were prohibited from participating, they were allowed to observe the rally.

“Pink Dot 2017 organisers have no choice but to adhere to this regulation, as organisers and foreigners caught flouting this rule are liable to be prosecuted,” the post said.
