Sexy advertisement don’t sell well any more

One reason cited is that people pay so much attention to the graphic material, their minds are distracted from what is actually being plugged.

Bushman and the the report’s lead author Robert Lull analysed 53 studies carried out in 2014 to measure the influences of violent and sexual content on advertising effectiveness with regards to brand memory, brand attitudes and buying intentions.

“They may do better if the ads themselves have a G-rating, which in the US means they are appropriate for a general audience,” added the researchers.

An interesting correlation was also found with media reports.

While the researchers found no significant effects of violent or sexual content in advertisements themselves, they did note that in a few studies when media content and ad content were similar, such as a violent ad in violent media or a sexual ad in sexual media, viewers were more likely to remember them and had a stronger intention to buy the product.

But Lull added that as the sexual content of an ad increased from suggestive poses to full frontal nudity, viewers’ memory, attitudes and buying intentions all decreased.

‘It is not that people are not attracted to sex and violence.

‘On the contrary, people have been attracted to sex and violence since evolutionary times, when attending to violent cues prevented our ancestors from being killed by enemies or predators and paying attention to sexual cues attuned our ancestors to potential reproductive opportunities.’

But, while violence and sex attract attention, it is at the expense of surrounding content that is neither violent nor sexual, according to Lull.

‘Sex and violence do not sell, and in fact they may even backfire by impairing memory, attitudes and buying intentions for advertised products.

“Thus, advertisers should think twice about sponsoring violent and sexual programmes, and about using violent and sexual themes in their ads,” said Professor Bushman.

Kaye Melliship, executive director of the Greater Victoria Housing Society, said that Bristow is entitled to seek a different outcome in the courts but added that the society will defend its decision.

"We wouldn't have pursued it if we didn't believe we should," she said Monday. "We're not frivolous about these things and the residential tenancy branch did rule in our favour."

She said the tenancy branch is a "good dispute resolution process" and "as a landlord and as tenants, you typically can rely on it."

Mr Basuki earlier this month said he had decided to award city-owned construction firm Jakarta Propertindo a limited construction contract as part of the US$2.6 billion (S$3.5 billion) LRT project.

The company will build Corridor 1, a 21.6km route that connects Kebayoran Lama in South Jakarta with Kelapa Gading in North Jakarta.

The Jakarta City Council rejected the governor’s plans to include the project in this year’s budget, saying it wants the city administration to properly present the project first.

Mr Basuki has forged ahead with the project nonetheless — securing funding from the central government for the first stage of construction, which is set to begin on Aug 17.

The governor had wanted the private sector to finance the project, but decided the city was capable of financing it on its own.

Money earmarked to build roads will be diverted to complete all seven corridors of the LRT project, which is scheduled for completion in 2019.

Yesterday, Mr Basuki said Mr Widodo would issue a regulation to allow the government to purchase the outcome of the project and make it a state property.

“The presidential regulation is being prepared,” Mr Basuki told reporters at the City Hall.

SEOUL: Another doctor at a major hospital that has been the epicentre of MERS outbreak in Seoul has contracted the deadly virus, the government said Saturday.

The 25-year-old female doctor at Samsung Medical Centre has become the 185th person infected with the virus in South Korea.

The country’s first case was diagnosed on May 20 in the largest outbreak of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome outside Saudi Arabia, the health ministry said.
