NO MORE PIRATED GAMES IN TWO YEARS, CRACKING GROUP WARNS

The founder of notorious Chinese cracking forum 3DM is warning that given the current state of anti-piracy technology, in two years there might be no more pirate games to play. The claims come after attempts to breach the Denuvo security protecting Just Cause 3 pushed the group's cracking expert to breaking point.

Piracy can never be stopped. Piracy will always be around. Where there’s a will to break copy protection, there’s a way. These are all comments regularly heard in piracy circles and to date, they’ve largely been proven accurate.

But while trying to protect movies and music using technological measures is by now almost a lost cause, the same cannot be said about video games. While copying a title was a trivial process several years ago, in many cases more and more roadblocks are now being put in pirates’ way.

In the past most games would be playable for free before their official debut but increasingly pirates are being made to wait for big titles to have their protection defeated, or ‘cracked’ as it’s more commonly known. In fact, aside from many dozens of dedicated piracy forums, there’s even an entire sub-Reddit community dedicated to providing the status of cracks.

One of the hottest topics involves the Avalanche Studios/Square Enix title Just Cause 3. Released on December 1, 2015 and despite massive demand, the game has still not been cracked. The problem appears to lie with the robustness of the technology protecting the game.

Just Cause 3 uses the latest iteration of Denuvo, an anti-tamper technology developed by Denuvo Software Solutions GmbH. While its secrets are best known to its creators, Denuvo is a secondary encryption system which protects existing and underlying DRM products.

In 2014 the product made the headlines after successfully protecting Dragon Age: Inquisition for almost a month, a very respectable time in cracking circles.

In the end it was Chinese cracking group 3DM that brought down that instance of Denuvo but the Austria-based company continued to tweak and achieved increasing protection periods on recent games in the FIFA series. FIFA 16 is currently Denuvo protected and that game still hasn’t been cracked, despite being released in September.

But Just Cause 3 is the current hot potato and despite having released an endless supply of cracks for other titles (and having had success against Denuvo in the past), the cracks (excuse the pun) are beginning to show at 3DM.

In a posting on her blog, 3DM forum founder ‘Bird Sister’ (also known as Phoenix) has revealed the frustrations being experienced with Just Cause 3.

“Recently, many people have asked about cracks for ‘Just Cause 3′, so here is a centralized answer to this question. The last stage is too difficult and Jun [cracking guy] nearly gave up, but last Wednesday I encouraged him to continue,” Bird Sister explains.

While games pirates everywhere will be willing Jun on to complete what 3DM ultimately believe will be an achievable task, Bird Sister isn’t optimistic about the future. In fact, she paints somewhat of a doomsday scenario.

“I still believe that this game can be compromised. But according to current trends in the development of encryption technology, in two years time I’m afraid there will be no free games to play in the world,” she adds.

While Denuvo is no doubt proving a difficult nut to crack, two years is an awful long time in technology and things are always prone to change. Furthermore, Denuvo is only used on a limited number of gaming titles, reportedly due to its relative expense.

But what is difficult to deny here is the window of opportunity provided by the Denuvo system. Hardcore gamers are notoriously impatient which almost certainly means that one, two or three months of waiting for a crack is coming up for a quarter of a year late to the game. Another three months after that and many gamers will be looking forward to FIFA 17 and Just Cause 4, leaving pirates in their wake.

Nevertheless, the seemingly uncrackable always seem to fall, eventually. During the past few days it was revealed that the PS4 has been compromised to run Linux. While not to the level of playing full-blown pirate games yet, that might lie around the corner. Exactly when, no one seems to know, but most gamers won’t have the patience to wait.

A recent report on 163.com, one of China's most-read websites, suggested that such hostesses, who are hired by gaming platforms to commentate on online video games and host live events in scanty clothing, are among the best-paid people in the country.

Han Yiying, China’s top-paid e-sport hostess, was paid around ¥17 million (£1.8 million) to join a gaming company at the end of 2014.
Han's income almost caught up with Liu Xiang, a hugely popular Olympic gold medalist from China.
Wages for e-sport hostesses increased more than 10 times in 2014 alone, according to the report.
E-sport, short for Electronic Sports, is the name for organised multi-player video game competitions in which mostly male players pay to take part.

Video game competitions associated with electronic sports involve real-time strategy, fighting and first-person shooter contests.

Few groups of people are better at making shit up than GTA fans. For example, remember when everyone said you could run into a woman's ghost in GTA IV? Let's set the record straight: there's no lady ghost in that game, people. Come on.

It's in GTA V.

If ghosts exist in GTA, there's no way our character isn't being haunted by roadkill 24/7.

Yep, that happens. Presumably as a way to address the rumors of ghostly activity and the accusations of misogyny in one fell swoop, Rockstar Games went ahead and hid a she-spook in the latest game. If you want to see it for yourself, you'll need to: 1) be at Mount Gordo between 11 p.m. and midnight on the game's clock, and 2) make sure your cat isn't in the room while you're playing, because if it jumps on you when the ghost appears you're gonna die for real. Then there'll be two ghosts here, and we're not sure if we can handle that.

You can see the ghost only through a sniper scope, since it has intimacy issues and tends to disappear when you get too close. However, if you do have the balls to go stand on the rocks where the ghost used to be floating, you might notice it leaves a message written in blood:

Holy shit! The killer is a sideways rabbit!

It says "JOCK" -- and what do you know, there's a character called Jock Cranley in the GTA universe who appears as an actor/stuntman in previous games and is running for governor in this one. Jock is mentioned in billboards, radio ads ... and, if you dig a little deeper, in this old news clipping about how his wife, Jolene, died in a mysterious accident on those same rocks, just as she was about to "ruin" his career:

We wholly support his quest to find the real killers.

But what if you don't own GTA V and still want to experience this fun Easter egg? Well, you can always visit Mount Gordon in Pennsylvania and find out if the real-world version of this legend is true. There's just one little difference: that particular lady wanders around without a head. For once, we're OK with Rockstar making a female character less realistic.

10 Millions iPhone 6 sold in 3 days

Apple sold a record 10 million iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus smartphones this weekend, the company announced today. The new phones went on sale on Friday, September 19.

The previous record-holder was the iPhone 5 line, which combined to sell 9 million devices during its launch weekend last year. Apple added that sales of the new iPhone 6 models could have been higher if the company was able to meet demand.

Strong performance out of the gate is not much of a surprise, given that the iPhone 6 broke preorder records for Apple, with more than 4 million preorders placed in under 24 hours.

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are now available in the United States, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore, and the United Kingdom. The devices will launch in more than 20 additional countries on September 26, and will be available in a total of 115 countries by the end of 2014.

"Sales for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus exceeded our expectations for the launch weekend, and we couldn't be happier," Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement. "We would like to thank all of our customers for making this our best launch ever, shattering all previous sell-through records by a large margin. While our team managed the manufacturing ramp better than ever before, we could have sold many more iPhones with greater supply and we are working hard to fill orders as quickly as possible."

Apple says the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus represent the "biggest advancements in iPhone history." The standard model sports a 4.7-inch screen, while the Plus features a 5.5-inch screen; both are Retina HD displays. In addition, both iPhone 6 models run on Apple's proprietary A8 chip that promises "blazing fast performance." They also work with Apple Pay, the company's new payment option, and feature the iOS 8 update.

The iPhone 6 begins at $199 for a 16 GB model, while the Plus starts at $299 for a 16 GB model. Those prices are assuming you lock in for a two-year contract.

Destiny, the most expensive video game franchise

Activision investing $500 million for Bungie's Destiny

That figure covers the game's development budget, marketing costs, and other various expenditures.

Activision will spend $500 million--half a billion dollars--on development and marketing for Bungie's upcoming "shared-world" shooter, Destiny. CEO Bobby Kotick revealed the figure during the Milken conference recently, as reported by Reuters.

In addition to development costs, the $500 million figure includes marketing, packaging, infrastructure support, royalties, and "other costs," a spokesperson for Activision confirmed.

How does that stack up with other AAA games? Analysts estimated the Grand Theft Auto V total budget (including development, production, and marketing) at $260 million. However, directly comparing GTAV and Destiny is somewhat problematic.

For one, Destiny is expected to unfold over the period of 10 years, while GTAV was a single release. An Activision spokesperson also explained that the company's investment in the game's engine, as well as a "robust backend infrastructure," are upfront costs that they expect should help reduce future development costs. "Over the long term, we expect the ultimate product costs to be roughly in line with other AAA titles," the Activision representative said.

GTAV generated $1 billion in revenue in three days and has shipped over 32.5 million copies to date.

No matter how you look at the $500 million figure, however, it's obvious that Activision is making a big bet on Destiny. A total budget that large dwarfs other video games and movies. "If you're making a $500 million bet you can't take that chance with someone else's IP," Kotick said. "The stakes for us are getting bigger."

Analysts explained that Activision will need to sell between 15 million and 16 million copies of Destiny to break even. Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia said this will be a tough task. "It's a head scratcher," Bhatia said. "For brand new IP, it's tough but it could post a big surprise."

Activision's significant investment in Destiny should come as no surprise. After all, the company said earlier this year that it expects Destiny to become Activision Publishing's third billion-dollar franchise, joining Call of Duty and Skylanders. Activision Blizzard subsidiary Blizzard Entertainment also has major franchises in its portfolio, including World of Warcraft, StarCraft, Diablo, and now Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft.

Destiny launches September 9 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4. A beta for the game begins this summer, first on PlayStation platforms.

Bitcoin Blunder Man Throws Away '£4m Laptop'

An IT worker comes to terms with throwing away an old laptop containing millions of pounds' worth of the virtual currency.

A man who threw away a computer hard drive containing more than £4m of the digital currency Bitcoin has told Sky News he is devastated.

James Howells, 28, binned the hard drive in the summer, but only realised his mistake last Friday.

The IT worker threw away his Dell laptop after it started to overheat, forgetting that it contained a digital wallet containing 7,500 units of the virtual currency.

Staff at the Docksway landfill site in Newport, South Wales, where the hard drive was taken, have told Mr Howells that by now it will be buried under at least three feet of waste in an area the size of a football pitch.

Mr Howells told Sky News: "It's absolutely devastating to be honest, there's not a feeling I can compare it to."

He "mined" the Bitcoins in 2009 when they were worthless, but in recent times they have gained real monetary value.

"At the time I threw them out I've recently learned they were worth £500,000, and today they're worth approximately £4.2m," he said.

Mr Howells only realised the value of what he had thrown away after reading articles online about the rise of the digital currency.

The laptop is buried at a landfill site in South Wales

Because of the way the Bitcoin system works there is no way of retrieving them online.

Ownership resides within the hard drive they are stored on, so unless the original working drive can be found Mr Howell has no hope of recovering his lost millions.

Newport City Council told Sky News: "Staff have assisted with the retrieval of items in certain circumstances, but this would have to be done very quickly after it was thrown away.

"However, an item thrown away in the summer would be buried under 25,000 cubic metres of waste and earth."
