PcWork’s Symphonica
Sennheiser Headphone Replacement Cable Review

HEADPHONE & CABLE: Sennheiser HD650 with new “silver driver” (~600hrs burn-in) and PcWork’s Symphonica cable (~200hrs burn-in)

ADAPTERS: Due to my DAC/Amp I needed the 3.5mm - 6.5mm adapter. The best I have now is the one that came with YUIN Pk1 earphone.

SOURCE & AMPLIFIER: Since I only have my Macbook and Maverick Audio TubeMagic D1 DAC/AMP, I will have to do with that... and a stock 1st gen iPod Nano.

PICTURES: (note: the final cable might look nicer then early bird ones..)

CANARE F-12

That is Cardas Audio Rhodium plug baby..

No kidding.. it works.. actually I need to lower the volume down to -12dB ~ -5dB

This cable has been under development for more then a year by PcWork and I’m certainly glad to be one of the few early bird to snag this cable. The cable demonstrate itself to be what I call “fast & effortless transparency” without sacrificing anything from the music dynamic. Even to the extend of nearing the AKG K1000 “king of dynamic headphones” in terms of transparency without sacrificing the music body and bass.

With the cable “effortless” feature, I can now use direct from 1st gen iPod Nano without the need for amp and still sound great (how’s that for portable). No way you can do this with stock cable.

Using iPod Nano, I ran through Unification ~Melody from Minori Chihara~. The piano, bass, cymbals and violin played effortlessly without blurring each other out. Each of the instrument felt like they have their own layer and you can distinctly pick them out. I’m really loving the violin on this one especially when they layer on top of each other. It’s so involving that I can’t sleep now..

Using the Maverick, the Antonio Forcione Quartet which is recorded live and known for its full acoustic sense and dynamic really shines on this cable. Guitar string were particularly sweet and smooth with harmonics of a real guitar on “Heart Beat”. The bass were both detailed and impactful without muddy sound in “Attempo” and towards the middle where the drums, guitar, violin and percussion play together you can clearly distinguish each of it.

The mids were warm and foward as if there were singing right in front of you. Although this sometimes might be a bit too involving on certain song, especially some female japanese vocals. I don’t get that with direct iPod though.. so it might be the Maverick that is causing it.

Watching movie with it was awesome too, especially those with a lot of action like Transformer. Talking about that the initial impression the starting of Transformer is forever burn into my memory.... I can't explain... you need to just listen . Go to Jaben and have a go. Seriously.

SUMMARY: This is a BIG upgrade for your 650, it completely changes the 650 to something that you will reach to everytime. If you haven't got a amp, I rather get this awesome cable first since you can drive 650 easily now with it. Then when the time comes to get a amp, go for neutral sounding amp like Hippo Amp / Govibe PPK / Larvy DA-11.

REVIEWS QUICKJUMP:
by duh2k "It sounded more open and forward, gone is the 'famed' sennheiser veil..."
by DaEMoNteNTAcLe "Without amping.. it is above my w10vtg by far..."
by Akabane@DrJackel "This is cable is worth in every cents for me..."
by []tr|al[] "Smooth-mid, accurate bass and excellent sound stage compare to stock cable..."

GoVibe Sharps HeadPhone Amp Impression

I only got secret amp to compare so here is my take;

Right off the bat, GoVibe Sharps has this amazing 3D soundstage (horizontal and vertical depth). It sounded transparent and a bit of sparkly treble with not so much prominent bass (it has tight bass). Haven't had the chance to listen to SR-71A/LISA III yet so I am not sure if the sound signature is similar which is claimed to be. It is definitely more powerful then secret amp with its dual 9V powering it, size wise it still quite portable.

Built quality is ok, but the power and gain switch is a bit hard to flip (probably will loosen after a while) and there is this coating (paint coat?) that is sticky, kind off like a freshly dry shellac finishing on wood. The volume knob is smooth and precise

With Energizer 9V Alkaline it lasted roughly about 30-40 hours before the sound started to distort. Now trying it out with a rechargeable 9V (max out nominal voltage around 9.3V) 200mAh and see how long it will last.

Comparison view

Other reviews:
http://www.head-fi.org/forums/blogs/sasaki...impression.html
http://www.headfonia.com/?p=981

EDIT:
10 Apr 2010 - Added comparison view.

Macbook Pro Optical to analog 7.1 decoder?

Hi,

Is there anything in the market here that can convert Macbook Pro optical out to analog output specifically to Gigaworks S750 speaker system. Currently I am only using normal analog to the S750 line in and of course that only output 2 channel.

I know there is a dedicated decoder a while back by creative, the DDTS-100 but it has been discontinued. If can find that decoder that would be the best but I'm guessing it is now more rarer then diamond.

So macbook pro (optical out) -> decoder(e.g DDTS-100) -> Gigaworks S750 (at least to 5.1). Got any similar decoder that can do this?

Thanks in advance for the advise.
