No debate on 1MDB, again.

1MDB chief says can’t debate Pua anymore

KUALA LUMPUR, May 18 — Arul Kanda Kandasamy today said recent developments surrounding 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) meant he could no longer honour his agreement to publicly debate DAP MP Tony Pua.

The 1MDB president said that since his acceptance of Pua’s challenge in April, the state investment firm has become the subject of a police investigation based on the Public Accounts Committee report.

It was also embroiled in a dispute with the International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC) over US$3.5 billion (RM14.2 billion) in payments the Abu Dhabi sovereign fund said it never received from 1MDB.

“I am now fully focused on assisting PDRM, and resolving the IPIC dispute. As such I cannot engage in a debate which may prejudice 1MDB’s legal position in relation to the investigation and the dispute.

- See more at: http://www.themalaymailonline.com/malaysia...h.w46Mchln.dpuf

I think I am seeing a pattern here

Penang's bicycle lanes

Penang is leading other Malaysian states in promoting cycling and does that by trying to provide good cycling infrastructure. In August 2013, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng implemented the idea of shared cycling lanes. These are lanes outlined with green paint on existing roads to indicate that they are shared. At the launch, Lim also hinted at more to come, and this has partly materialised in the form of dedicated cycling lanes on the east coast of Penang Island.

With these lanes, locals can commute to work safely and easily. To further encourage cycle commuting, there is a regular “Bike to Work on Friday” routine that has been going on for more than a year. Participants meet at Persiaran Karpal Singh and then cycle in groups to work.

The lanes also give visitors a good way to acquaint themselves with the island since they pass scenic spots of moored fishing boats, and give great views of the two Penang bridges and some parks. Families can also bring their children along for a good ride. Visitors can simply rent a bike from the many shops in town and ride along the lovely shaded lanes. There is even news filtering down that a public bicycle sharing system, like those in bike-friendly cities, will be implemented. Users just pick up a bike from one of many strategic stations and conveniently drop them off at any other station.

There are grand plans for a cycle-friendly Penang: a masterplan with guidelines for cycling lane design and construction has been laid out, and within that plan is a framework routes proposal with lanes that loop the island and criss-cross with radial links that serve the inner sections. Phase 1 of the East Coast Cycling Lanes has been completed while Phase 2 is in progress and proceeding at a rapid pace.

East Coast Cycling Lanes Phase 1

Phase 1 of the East Coast Cycling Lanes runs 13km from Jalan Gurdwara (just opposite the north end of Jalan Penang) up to the second roundabout after Queensbay Mall. These lanes were completed a few months ago with only some short stretches yet to be connected in a proper way. For most stretches, the lanes are fully dedicated for cycling; some short sections are shared with motorised traffic while others are shared with pedestrians.

Riding along these lanes, I found them well constructed with either tarred or broom-swept concrete surfaces. They run smoothly and one would not expect a bumpy ride. Guardrails line the sides for safety. Separate bridges and ramps have also been constructed for the use of cyclists.

There are some frustrations though: even though physical barriers have been put up to deter them, motorcyclists frequently encroach into the lanes.

East Coast Cycling Lanes Phase 2

East Coast Cycling Lanes Phase 2

Phase 2 continues from Queensbay Mall, runs parallel to Lebuhraya Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu and, after about 10km, ends at Batu Maung, which is an interesting destination where you can find good ikan bakar (grilled fish) served at Teluk Tempoyak, the War Museum and a giant footprint of Admiral Cheng Ho. Work is in progress and has, at the end of March 2016, almost reached the Second Penang Bridge.
This phase has been well designed – the lanes for the most part meander some distance from the highway (to keep cyclists a safe distance from fast-zooming traffic) and run below shady trees. Where presently there are no trees, new ones are being planted. And when the lanes run next to the highway, steel guardrails have been put up.

What the Future Holds

With plans for the lanes to radiate inwards, Penangites can look forward to cycling infrastructure that will rival or be even better than that in many other cycling cities. But good as they may be, there is always room for improvement, such as providing clean public toilets along the way, lighting at dark stretches, directional signage especially at exit points, distance markers, more parks and adjacent food courts, and perhaps the addition of cycling lanes on the two bridges so that cyclists can cross over to the mainland without using the ferry.

http://penangmonthly.com/new-cycling-lanes...ang-experience/

New property launch, sold out again

Hundreds queued since yesterday for first phase launch of Setia Eco Templer

S P Setia Bhd has officially unveiled this morning the first phase of Setia Eco Templer. At the point of reporting, more than 130 homes have been 'sold out' from a queue that started since 7pm yesterday evening.

Located on the former site of the Perangsang Templer Golf Club in Templer Park, Rawang, the masterplan for Setia Eco Templer features English, Balinese or Peranakan themed architectural designs.

Hundreds of homebuyers who already placed a RM10,000 booking fee earlier turned up this morning at the unit selection event to secure their choice homes. The event was held at the Setia Eco Templer show gallery, which is the former clubhouse being used for the township sales.

The 195-acre, mid-sized township sits between Rawang and Selayang, and was founded on nature and the environment as it is next to the breathtaking, acclaimed Kentaro Sato-designed Templer Park Golf & Country Club and a forest reserve of more than 1,000 ha.

The pristine green surroundings will be its main selling point. There are also a couple of limestone hills in the area. Besides that, it is relatively close to the city - 25km away from Kuala Lumpur city centre and 10km from the Rawang main commercial area.

The master-planned township project, which boasts nine rivers, creeks and other water systems that S P Setia executive vice president Datuk Koe Peng Kang believes will make the project "legendary", has a total gross development value (GDV) of RM2 billion.

There is a lake, a river and eight natural streams which flow from the adjacent limestone hills into the township. Each of them will be distinctive. That is the reason why Setia Eco Templer comes with a tagline: The Legend of Nine Creeks.

The river and streams have been given British names in honour of Sir Gerald Templer’s British origins. (Templer Park was named after Sir Gerald Templer, a British High Commissioner in Malaya between 1952 and 1954.)

The nine rivers and streams are called Carson Creek, Alresford Creek, Bramble Creek, Oakley Creek, Cedar Creek, Benfleet Creek, Lawling Creek, Flag Creek and Turtle Creek.

The first phase is Carson Creek, the longest creek of all nine. The second phase is Alresford Creek. They featured old English architectural designs, collectively known as Charming Essex.

It comprises 234 units of linked villas, which are essentially 2-storey terrace homes (176 units), 2-storey semi-detached homes (52 units) and 2-storey bungalow homes (6 units). The completion of the first phase is May 2019.

The first phase has selling prices ranging from RM850,000 to RM3 million. It has a GDV of RM400 million.

The linked villas have land areas of 22' x 80' (76 units), 24' x 80' (66 units) and 26' x 80' (34 units); with built-ups of 2,394 sq ft, 2,626 sq ft and 2,965 sq ft respectively. The semi-Dees have built-ups of 3,492 sq ft and 3,482 sq ft. The bungalows have a built-up of 4,214 sq ft.

The monthly maintenance fee is estimated to be RM0.25 psf based on the land area.

According to the developer, the natural rivers, streams and undulating terrains will not be altered and the nature's sanctuary will not be intruded. It was said that the temperature here is 1 to 2 degrees lower than the city.

The first phase will be sold on a 10:90 package, similar to how properties are sold in Australia. The homebuyer pays only 10% and the rest upon completion of the unit after he takes vacant possession, example in 36 months time.

The leasehold township will comprise gated and guarded communities with a total of 900 units of landed homes as well as 900 units of affordable housing. The homes will be supported by the palatial clubhouse, to service residents’ leisure needs.

This is the company's first major offering since 2014 under a new leadership that has been confirmed only recently by its largest shareholder, Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB).

As part of its rebranding exercise, this launch also marks a fresh new identity for one of Malaysia's most well-known property developer.

Later this year, S P Setia intends to launch 900 units of affordable apartments under the Rumah Selangorku scheme. It will be located on the southernmost side of the township, adjacent to the main gateway, south of the Benfleet Creek.

They will have a selling price ranging from RM150,000 to RM400,000 for sizes ranging from 700 to 1,000 sq ft.

Because proximity to amenities are important, the township will also have a 5-acre commercial zone which will be developed in-line with the completion of residential components. The commercial zone will comprise of 2 to 3-storey commercial shop-offices.

Land for a proposed school will be provided adjacent to the Rumah Selangorku. The entire township development is slated for completion in 8 to 10 years.

To counter future issues of congestion, the developer will build additional infrastructure and improve liveability and security features. The nearest home to an existing electric pylon line will be at least 1km away.

A new road interchange costing approximately RM25 million will be built to directly link Jalan Ipoh so that future residents do not need to u-turn to reach the township. It will be completed before the first phase homes are handed over.

Last month, the AmBank Group had granted RM315 million banking facilities for the development of the township. The bank also granted a RM200 million working capital term loan to S P Setia for the early commencement of the first phase next month.

- See more at: http://www.ptlm.com.my/index.php/component...h.cIiqjNcJ.dpuf

Amos Yee arrested for insulting Islam

SINGAPORE – Teenage blogger Amos Yee, whose online comments on religion prompted police reports to be lodged against him, has been arrested, his former lawyer Alfred Dodwell confirmed. Yee was arrested on Wednesday (May 11), said Mr Dodwell, who was contacted by Yee’s mother seeking help.

In response to media queries, the police said on Thursday that a 17-year-old male Singaporean had been arrested for offences under Sections 174 and 298 of the Penal Code.

Section 174 pertains to failure to attend a session as ordered by public servant, whereas Section 298 involves uttering words with an intent to wound religious and racial feelings. “The offence under section 298 of the Penal Code relates to online remarks made in November 2015 that contained offensive and disparaging remarks against various religious communities,” said a police spokesman.

Yee was ordered to report to a police station for investigations after the police reports were lodged, but he did not do so. “The subject disregarded the notice and left the country shortly thereafter, and remained overseas for a prolonged period until his return in April 2016,” said the spokesman.

Upon his return, he was served with a Warrant of Attendance issued by the State Courts to report again, but failed to do so. The police added that investigations are ongoing.

Mr Dodwell said he has yet to decide if he will represent Yee again. “I will need to know what he’s been arrested for and whether he will be charged,” he said.

In a blog post last November, Yee, 17, had responded to remarks supposedly made by former Nominated Member of Parliament Calvin Cheng and made references to Islam. He was supposed to have gone down to Jurong Police Division on Dec 14 and Dec 22 last year to assist with investigations. But on Dec 15, he claimed to have run away from home, and resurfaced in public at a Singapore Democratic Party by-election rally only last month.

Last week, Yee uploaded a video of the police at his doorstep, presenting him with a warrant for him to appear before the police for investigations on Tuesday.

Yee was convicted last year of hurting the religious feelings of Christians and for posting an obscene image online. He was sentenced to four week’s jail on July 6, but released immediately, as he had spent 50 days in remand by then. A subsequent appeal was dismissed by the High Court.

http://m.todayonline.com/singapore/amos-ye...ested-yesterday

Ang Mo, wah, shiok, are now proper English words

Several Singaporean and Hong Kong English terms, including "wah", "shiok" and "yum cha", are now officially recognised as acceptable English.

The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) added 19 Singaporean terms and 13 Hong Kong terms in its latest update.
"Wah" is an expression of delight or surprise, "shiok" means cool, and "yum cha" is a type of Chinese brunch.
Additions also include "blur", which means confused or ignorant, and "sabo", which means to harm or play a prank on.

The dictionary included formations of English that are mostly used in Singapore or Hong Kong.
For example, "compensated dating", a Hong Kong term, refers to the practice of teenage students providing companionship or sex in exchange for money or gifts.
And "Chinese helicopter" is a derogatory term referring to a Singaporean whose schooling was conducted in Mandarin Chinese and has limited knowledge of English.
The OED records the meaning and development of the English language.
It says that, for a word to qualify, there must be "several independent examples of the word being used, and also evidence the word has been in use for a reasonable amount of time".

Hong Kong English words:
Char siu: roast pork marinated in a sweet and savoury sauce
Dai pai dong: an open-air food stall
Kai fong: a neighbourhood association
Wet market: a market for the sale of fresh meat, fish, and produce

Ang moh: A light-skinned person, especially of Western origin or descent; a Caucasian
Hawker centre: A food market at which individual vendors sell cooked food from small stalls, with a shared seating area for customers
Chilli crab: A dish consisting of crab cooked in a sweet and spicy gravy containing red chillies and tomato
Killer litter: Objects thrown or falling from high-rise buildings, endangering people

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-3627564...source=facebook

Dr Wan Azizah: Olive branch to PAS from Azmin, not Pakatan

PETALING JAYA, May 11 — The Pakatan Harapan presidential council today denied extending an olive branch to PAS to join the opposition bloc.

PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said it was her deputy Datuk Seri Azmin Ali’s own initiative to reach out to PAS.

“It wasn’t our invitation, it was the MB’s invitation,” she told reporters, referring to Azmin, who is also Selangor mentri besar.

She was responding to PAS vice-president Datuk Mohd Amar Abdullah, who had reportedly rejected Azmin’s offer to work with Pakatan Harapan and had in turn offered PKR to join the “third force” that was formed between PAS and Parti Ikatan Bangsa Malaysia.

Azmin had in a recent statement called on PAS to join forces with PKR, DAP and Amanah, following the opposition’s poor performance in Sarawak, to “move forward to face GE14 as a team.”

Dr Wan Azizah noted however, that discussions were still open on the looming by-elections in the Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar federal seats.

“Especially for Sungai Besar, which is in Selangor, and Selangor’s exco is made up of PAS, PKR, DAP, and backbenchers from Amanah,” she said.

The Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar seats became vacant after the death of their respective MPs, Datuk Wan Muhammad Khairil Anuar Wan Ahmad and Datuk Noriah Kasnon, who were among six people killed in a helicopter crash in Sarawak last week.

The Election Commission (EC) is expected to meet this Friday to decide on the by-elections.

- See more at: http://www.themalaymailonline.com/malaysia...h.PlahFLqM.dpuf

Chinese back with BN, MCA says

KUALA LUMPUR, May 8 — MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai today thanked Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem for leading Barisan Nasional (BN) to a stunning victory in the Sarawak state elections yesterday.

He said the win, which saw the ruling pact returned to power with 72 of 82 seats in the state legislative assembly, shows that the state’s Chinese voters have left the opposition for BN.

“There is also an increase in Chinese voters supporting us and this shows that the community is trusting BN once again.

“For this, MCA must congratulate Adenan for his ability to win back seats that were previously under DAP and the oppositions,” he told a press conference at Wisma MCA.

The transport minister added that the people of Sarawak were also now aware of the oppositions’ true colours.

“DAP and PKR have been dishing out all sorts promises but never fulfilled them and then they go ahead and contest with each other in several seats.

“This goes to show that they are only interested in their own party matters,” he said.

Liow noted that the victory in Sarawak was a good sign for the coalition to move forward in the same momentum for the next general elections.

BN soared to an easy victory yesterday, taking 72 seats out of 82, more seats even than the 71 that made up the Sarawak legislative assembly five years ago.

Sarawak-based SUPP (Sarawak United People’s Party) won seven of the 13 seats it contested, a major improvement from 2011 when it managed to just win three constituencies out of 19, losing the bulk of its contested seats to the DAP.

PKR won three out of the 40 seats it contested while DAP only secured seven from the 31 seats, five seats fewer than the 12 it won in 2011.
Tony Pua admits "We are crushed"

Speaking in Kuala Lumpur, DAP national publicity secretary Tony Pua acknowledged the severity of the defeat.

“We are crushed. Based on the size of BN’s majority in our incumbent seats, they were lost before the battle began. We were unable to crack the Adenan juggernaut. At the same time, without a Taib to give impetus for outstation voters to return, it exacerbated the loss,” he said.

“We will lick our wounds, and we will have to go back to the drawing board. But just as Pak Lah secured 91 percent of the Parliament in 2004 with his refreshing promises, Malaysians seeking change will have to keep the faith. The DAP will conduct our post-mortem, take stock and rebuild.”

- See more at: http://www.themalaymailonline.com/malaysia...h.o8fEllym.dpuf

9 Chinese universities in top 100

Chinese universities have fared surprisingly well in yet another world ranking of the best universities, claiming 5 of the top 100 spots.
Yet again, the leader was Beijing's prestigious Tsinghua University, which ranked 18th, right between Cornell and ETH Zurich. Nibbling at their heels however was Peking University, coming in at 21st, between University College London and John Hopkins University.
Here's a full list of the Chinese universities included:
18 - Tsinghua University
21 - Peking University
71-80 - Fudan University
71-80 - Shanghai Jiaotong University
81-90 - Zhejiang University
The "Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings" is based on subjective judgments of over 10,000 published scholars from 133 countries across the world. Final scores are based on the number of times that an institution was named as the best in its field.
Unsurprisingly, the list was dominated by US and European institutions, but apart from the five mainland universities, three Hong Kong universities also made the top 100, as well as the National Taiwan University in Taipei.
Back in March, the QS World University Ranking named Tsinghua as the 25th best university in the world, generating some skepticism about the methods that they used to arrive at that ranking. However, it would seem that in the two months since then, China's top university has managed to improve itself even further.
Recently, China has been rapidly expanding its higher education system, with a new college literally going up every single week. But it also appears like they are doing an admirable job of improving the quality of at least their top institutions, or at their perception.

http://shanghaiist.com/2016/05/05/tsinghua_18th_best.php

Another free bus route

THE Selangor state government free bus service will include Puchong from next month.

The bus service also known as Selangor Smart Bus Service will be operated by the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) with support from Land Public Transport Comission (SPAD).

According to sources from SPAD, the route will start from Pusat Bandar Puchong LRT station and traverse the IOI Puchong Jaya LRT station, Sunway Medical Centre BRT station, Sunway Pyramid, Inti College at SS15, Subang Parade and Sime Darby Medical Centre, Subang Jaya.

Residents in Puchong have previously appealed to the authorities to provide better bus service to Subang Jaya. Although the distance between the two towns was close, there was no proper public transport connectivity.

The free bus service will greatly benefit the growing population in Puchong and could reduce the congestion at the LDP Sunway toll plaza.

College student Daniel Ng, 22 who lives in Puchong Jaya, was excited to hear about the free bus service and hoped to save money by using it.

“This is good news as I currently have to pay RM4.20 daily just for toll to drive to my college in Bandar Sunway although the distance between my house and college is only 6km.

“I am glad the bus service is free. It will be very useful for students like me,” he added.

According to a spokesman from SPAD, the free bus service would also connect the “missing link” from Puchong to Bandar Sunway and Subang Jaya.

“The bus routes were properly planned with MPSJ to provide direct access from the newly opened LRT stations in Puchong to the Sunway BRT line and also popular areas in Subang,’’ he said.

The Sunway BRT Line is also integrated with the upcoming Kelana Jaya LRT extension line and KTM Komuter.

“This will serve as an efficient feeder service and will provide better connectivity for Puchong and Subang Jaya residents, he added.

Asked why the free bus service would not start from LRT BK5 station in Bandar Kinrara despite demand from residents there, he said SPAD had conducted a study in Puchong and Bandar Kinrara and found that demand for bus services were higher in Pusat Bandar Puchong and IOI Puchong Jaya where plans to provide better connectivity were currently underway.

“For passengers travelling from BK5 LRT station in Bandar Kinrara, they can transfer at the IOI Puchong Jaya LRT station to use the free bus service to Subang Jaya and Bandar Sunway,’’ he said.

The spokesman added that details such as frequencies, operating hours and the official launch date would be revealed once they had finalised details with MPSJ.

He added MPSJ planned to introduce an additional free bus service to serve residents in Bandar Kinrara to connect to the BK5 LRT Station and certain areas in Bandar Puteri, Puchong.

Kinrara assemblyman Ng Sze Han, who has been supportive of the idea, said the free bus service was aimed at providing better connectivity in areas not covered by current bus operators.

“The free bus service will benefit communities in Puchong and Subang Jaya who are making use of public transport to head to shopping malls, universities and hospitals,’’ he added.

Recently the state government announced that the Selangor Smart Bus Service will cover Selayang and Sepang.

Other areas that are enjoying the service are Shah Alam, Subang Jaya, Ampang, Petaling Jaya and Klang.

The Smart buses are also equipped with free WiFi connection, CCTV and disabled facilities.

Public transport connectivity in Puchong will also further improve next month when the remaining three LRT stations under the Ampang LRT Extension project are fully operational on June 30.

The three LRT stations are Puchong Perdana, Puchong Prima and Putra Heights.

Putra Heights will also be the integrated station for the Kelana Jaya extension line which is also scheduled to open on June 30 with new stations located in Subang, Ara Damansara and Glenmarie.

The spokesman from SPAD has also confirmed that once the Ampang LRT extension project was fully completed, commuters from Puchong LRT station would no longer need to switch trains at the Sri Petaling LRT station.

Currently, commuters have to switch trains as RapidKL was upgrading its signalling system at the older stations.

“They can soon commute directly all the way to Sentul Timur once RapidKL has completed its system migration works by June 30 for its new sets of Ampang Line trains to serve along its older stations,’’ the spokesman added.
http://www.thestar.com.my/metro/community/...d-reduce-traff/

China police in the streets of KL soon?

Chinese police to go on patrol in Rome and Milan

Recently, Chinese tourists in Italy have presumably been a bit startled to see Chinese police officers in front of the Colosseum ready to answer questions and help keep the peace.
This is part of a trial-run for a brand-new initiative between Chinese and Italian police forces, where officers from each country will go on patrol around popular tourist hot spots. The program will kick off next Monday, with two Chinese police officers assigned to Rome, and another two assigned to Milan.

These four officers all speak English and Italian, as well as Mandarin. While they can not make any arrests, they can help mainland tourists feel safer, by helping them communicate with local authorities or contact Chinese diplomats, state media reports.
Some three million Chinese tourists visit Italy each year, with many choosing it as a safer option over France, and recently they have been targeted by thieves who know that they carry around more money than most.

Angelino Alfano, the Italian Minister of the Interior, is obviously excited about the project, telling Xinhua:
Through this initiative, we are telling Italian citizens that their state is joining hands with a great country, in a team to ensure the safety of everybody, including Italian citizens and Chinese tourists in Italy.
Alfano says that if the program is a success, it will also be implemented in other Italian cities.
But this deal doesn't just go one way, in a few months, some Italian police officers will fly over to go on patrol in Shanghai and Beijing. So heads up for that?

Liao Jinrong, head of international cooperation at the Ministry of Public Security, hopes to expand the program into other European countries in the future. So soon you may see Chinese police on patrol in front of the Eiffel Tower, Reichstag and Parthenon -- in what we can only assume is a plot to take over the world with their new security robots.

http://shanghaiist.com/2016/05/04/chinese_..._rome_milan.php

Facebook opens office in Malaysia(KL Sentral)

Just two weeks from its Philippines office opening, Facebook has launched another office in Malaysia.
Facebook's Asia-Pacific vice president, Dan Neary, announced the opening Wednesday. He said the company counts 18 million Malaysians as active users, which makes up 81% of the country's Internet base.

Facebook said 94% of its 12 million daily users access the social network via mobile phones.
Malaysians are also a social bunch. They have 60% more friends than the global average number on Facebook, and as a country are ranked 10th in the world for having the most friends.

Like the other offices that Facebook has set up in Southeast Asia, its Malaysia office will be focused on reaching out to businesses in the country, as more start to connect with customers via their Facebook pages. ‪#‎FB4MY‬

http://mashable.com/2016/05/04/facebook-ma...nk#9SXYjVamxiqw
pictures in link

Social media giant Facebook has opened its office here in Malaysia, expanding its presence in Southeast Asia, which is the company's fastest growing market.

The office is located at the capital’s commercial centre, KL Sentral.

Facebook Southeast Asia managing director Kenneth Bishop said the launch of its office here marked a milestone for Facebook in Malaysia.

Facebook Asia Pacific vice president Dan Neary said the establishment of the local office is to facilitate companies and businesses in Malaysia in marketing their businesses through the platform provided by Facebook.

Both Bishop and Neary were speaking at a press conference held during its launching ceremony. The launch party event was held at the Glasshouse@Seputeh today.

"We are committed to helping Malaysians and businesses connect in more meaningful ways. Our local team in Malaysia will be focused on helping businesses tap into this unprecedented opportunity to connect with todays mobile- first consumers," Neary said.

The launch event also saw Nicole Tan, who is the former managing director with J. Walter Thompson Malaysia, announced as Facebook's Head of Malaysia.

She said Malaysian Facebook users are an active and 'mobile-first' community.

Southeast Asia is the fastest growing region for Facebook and Malaysia, a mobile-first country with a mobile penetration rate of 144 per cent, is driving the growth.

Neary said that Malaysia had more than 18 million Facebook users and 6.5 million people on Instagram.

Malaysians also rank 10th globally for the number of friends, which is 60 per cent more than the global average and spend more time watching videos on their smartphones than consumers in any other country in Southeast Asia.

"In this regard we would like to offer marketing services, advertising and consumer access to businesses and companies in Malaysia so they can grab this opportunity to further expand their business.

"In Malaysia, 94 per cent of people discover products and brands on Facebook, and 62 per cent make a purchase after discovery," Neary said.

Neary said that Facebook will also cooperate with the relevant agencies in the country to help entrepreneurs expand their businesses.

According to statistics, an average of 77 per cent of Facebook users in Malaysia follow at least one business site, 94 per cent of consumers discover products and brands on Facebook, while 62 per cent make their purchase after the discovery.

He also said Facebook will be offering training and legal platform for businesses and companies through its blueprint services soon.

The opening of the local office is part of its expansion in the region following the launch of the Philippines office in Manila last month.

Each month, 241 million people use Facebook across Southeast Asia, 94 per cent of them via mobile while globally, 1.65 billion people now use Facebook.

Photo-sharing platform Instagram, which the company owns, has over 400 million users. It was acquired by Facebook for approximately US$1 billion in April 2012.

Last year, PTLM reported that Internet giant Google opened a brand new larger Malaysian office at Menara 1 Sentrum in KL Sentral.

The Malaysian headquarters of The Priceline Group-owned Agoda.com is also located in the same building.

- See more at: http://www.ptlm.com.my/index.php/component...h.mVzm2kZY.dpuf
