Chinese teenager chops off left hand in attempt

SUZHOU - A 19-year-old Chinese teenager was so desperate to cure himself of his Internet addiction that he chopped off his left hand with a kitchen knife last week.

Identified only by the name "Little Wang", the teenager from Natong, Jiangsu province, reportedly smuggled the knife out of his home and left a note on his bed informing his parents that he was going to the hospital.

He then severed his left hand at the wrist while sitting on a bench at a nearby bus stop. He left it lying on the ground and took a cab to a local hospital, where doctors managed to re-attach the hand after the police recovered it.

It is not known if he will regain full mobility of it.

Local television later showed images of the bloodstained bench where he apparently committed the act.

Little Wang's distraught mother told reporters: "We cannot accept what has happened. It was completely out of the blue. He was a smart boy."

He later explained to his parents that he hated himself for his Internet addiction as his examinations were coming and he could not focus on his studies.

A 2010 report by the China Youth Internet Association revealed that 24 million, or 14.1 per cent of young Internet users, are online addicts.

As of last year, as many as 250 military-style boot camps have sprouted up in the country to help them curb their urges.

- See more at: http://www.straitstimes.com/news/asia/east...204#xtor=CS1-10 http://

I just know.
-Everytime I go out and see neighbor he will ask all sort of question about me, such as my job, my work, my family blah blah blah. Some of the question very sensitive to me I hate answering, then he will still be, why you don't want to share with me?
-When I show my annoyance, like when I am busy or late and rushing out and respond with one-word sentence, neighbor will say, "why you hate me"
-Sometimes neighbor want to come inside my apartment to borrow something. Got times after I open door he help himself in.
-Why he always outside, I donno.
-I become so scare that I sometimes don't dare to go out.
-Not sure if he does the same to other housemate, I think no.

How to show neighbor that
a) I am not interested in conversation,
b) I prefer a mind your own business neighbor.

Edit: I really scare rompak...

Nobody really wants to see you succeed

Notes
-No tldr version, I lazy.
-If boieng767 and its dupe is reading this, Hey wassup, how's USA?

One of the saddest facts of life that you have to eventually accept is that nobody really wants to see you succeed; nobody is on your side. Everybody is either, at best, indifferent to your success, or, at worst, totally against you and secretly hoping for you to fail. And most hurtfully, the latter comprises your family, your friends, and your significant other -- people who're supposedly dearest to you.
Let me say that again: your family, friends, and significant other don't really want you to succeed too much. At best, they want to see you succeed only by their definition. In other words, they don't want what's best for you. They want what's best for them.

Let's start with the incomprehensible: your family hoping for you to fail. Do you honestly think parents want what's best for their children? Think again. Parents want what's safe for their children. If parents had it their way, their kids would grow up to be ordinary, consumerist, obedient, college-graduated corporate workers who're married with kids, tied down with a mortgage, and do grocery shopping and housework on Sundays, perhaps vacationing once a year. Parents would any day prefer that their kids became doctors and lawyers and engineers, so that:
1) they can show off their kids' "achievements" to relatives, friends, and neighbors who don't give a f***, and
2) they can start reaping the steady, trickle-down returns of investment from their children's professional fat steady paychecks.
What if the child doesn't want to be a lawyer, but wants to, say, become a tattoo artist instead, because that's what makes her infinitely happier? Tough luck, kiddo, because your folks will never be on your side. You think it's easy these days to raise a kid? And kids these days take so bloody long to grow up. They talk back, they have a mind of their own, and they just seem to be more expensive yet more rebellious than ever. Put yourself in the parents' shoes: they will expect some sort of compliance from the child for all the blood, sweat, time, and money poured into raising her. Parents already have a vision of what their child will grow up to be like from the day the child was swimming in mummy's womb, and they'll be damned if the child deviated from the grand master plan and embarrassed the family.

You also realize that parents very rarely encourage kids to chase real big dreams, like becoming multi-millionaire tycoons or international celebrities, even if they know that their child might be made for "big things." It's pretty simple really: if the kid fails, the parents will eventually bear the risks and costs of failure, including financial hardship and humiliation. Yet if the kid succeeds, the parents wouldn't necessarily participate in the child's success -- some people become pricks when they make it big and forget their parents. Hell, some people don't even need to make it big to forget their parents. Parents ultimately have what I call a need to be needed. They want to continue to feel relevant to the child's life, and the child being wildly phenomenally successful is only going to broaden the social and generation gap between parent and child. Alas, parents have insecurities too about being neglected and unacknowledged, and this is especially a true scenario for a kid who grew up to be too important, famous, and busy.

So really, your parents don't want you to be happy chasing your goals. They prefer that you play it safe, so that:
1) you solidify their bragging rights,
2) they get predictable dividends instead of potential debts, and
3) they remain relevant, remembered, and connected to you. If they had it their way, they'd even want you to live under their roof after you get married.
What about friends? Do they really want to see you succeed? Of course not. Friends often see themselves as your peer, your equal. If you keep outshining them, do you think they'll like you very much? By virtue of being their equal, you aren't supposed to be better than them. People like to hang out with other people who make them feel good, not people who make them feel like shit. Someone who's driven and determined and knows what he wants in life will attract a lot of hate, even if he's actually a kind, honest person with a genuine humble personality. Most friends are really frenemies.

Now let's talk about significant others. Surely most people want to see their spouse/partner succeed? As a husband or boyfriend, just try going to the gym to "improve yourself" out of the blue, and tell me your spouse's/partner's reaction. Enough said!

sos: facebook.com/

WhatSim

Touch down in a foreign country, and it's likely that you will send the first message to your loved ones at home via WhatsApp only when you locate a Wi-Fi network.

Now, an Italian company has come up with a sim card that they say will plug that gap.

WhatSim is a sim card that lets you use WhatsApp anywhere in the world for €10 (S$15.50) a year.

The sim card connects to 400 operators in about 150 countries, and will search for the best signal automatically, the company says. Singapore and Malaysia are included in the countries it operates in.

There will be no need to search for a Wi-Fi connection, or pay for roaming data services, but it works only with WhatsApp. The user will not be able to make calls, send text messages or surf the Internet.

You will also have to pay more to send pictures, videos, or share location and contacts.

The idea is the brain child of Manuel Zanella, 38, founder and CEO of Zeromobile.

The card can be bought from authorised dealers or the website at http://www.whatsim.com/en, where it states that the sim works on "all unlocked phones" and comes in nano, micro and standard sizes.

- See more at: http://www.straitstimes.com/digital-life/p...122#xtor=CS1-10

How do people die in Air Crash?

Hi /K yang bijaksana,

Have a question.

How do people die?

Let's say the plane like AF447 hit the sea vertically, won't the bottom of the plane absorb the impact?

Say I sit on the chair with my seatbelt on wrapped in cushion, how come still die?

Using AF447 as example, a lot of passengers are found still strapped on their seat and complete.

If die is because of trauma, won't the body be smashed also? (Like broken bone, if crash and die like jump from building, body will be smashed)

Or a lot of plane crash people actually die from drowning?
