Upgrading PC for work

Hi guys

I'm planning on upgrading my 3yo pc.

Currently using :

amd athlon 3000+
2gb ddr2 ram
some asus mobo
gainward ati 4850 gfx
some 5-7 yo hard disks
some old casing

the only limiting factor here is the money. aiming for <rm1000

planning on changing to:

i3 2100 = rm350
ASROCK H61M-GS RM169
4gb ram x 2 = rm65x2

upgrading because cant tahan de, program suka crash (my suspect is insufficient ram). but when shopping for ddr2 just now, frustated cant find reduced sized ddr2 (cant fit a normal sized one because of custom cpu heatsink) and plan to up all main system altogether.

question is:

is it worth it in term of performance hike (mainly media editing and minor gaming), or should i save more money and build a new pc altogether...

BEng and MEng are both undergraduate degree, meaning your first degree after your Pre-U.
The difference between BEng and MEng, other than the year it spends, is the possibility of getting accredited.
Today, to become a professional engineer (bearing the title Ir. or CEng or PEng depending on where you get accredited), you must study for 4 years during your tertiary studies. If you do not possess a 4-year degree, you will have to continue further study, or sit for their exams, so that you are qualified to work towards of becoming a professional engineer.

A little bit of history. BEng is always a 3-year course in UK education, as compared to 4 years in other countries. This is because UK education is rather concentrated, studying the core elements and do not waste time on the unrelated contents. Due to this nature, they are able to concentrate the course into 3 years. But the problem comes when everyone else in the world says, they will only accredit those degrees which are only of 4 years in length. To counter that, UK decides to come up with a 4-year MEng, instead of elongating their BEng into 4 years. The extra year, essentially teaches you more stuff, and also prepares you better to join the industry.

You may now wonder then, is our MEng the same as those Aus BEng? The answer is, NO, except when it comes to getting accreditation. A quick proof would be comparing the course structure side by side. You will find that, while Aus students still study Physics and Chemistry in their first semester/year, UK is already delivering the core contents of the respective course. For instance, for Mechanical, instead of just studying Physics, you already start off with Thermofluids and Solid Mechanics. Why? Because A-Level delivers more contents than SAM/AUSMAT/HSC, so they can just start with more advanced topics already.

Regarding further study, you may be surprised that, even a 3-year BEng could earn you a PhD seat in a UK university. This holds true within UK but not so true to the rest of world. Often the time, a lot of universities will clarify that a 4-year degree is required before one can start his/her Master/PhD, so a mere 3-year BEng will simply be insufficient to apply successfully. Harvard, for instance, actually states that one needs to do 6 years before they can start a PhD there. The specification of 6-years, means that even if you are a Master, you do not yet have the qualification to do it.

As for why you need accreditation, it really depends. If you are from Civil, go and get your MEng and practise in getting the Ir. title. It's vital for the Civil sector. As for the other main streams (Mech, Chem, EE), it is not that important in Malaysia. This is because, Boards of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) has yet to be so strict on the accreditation stuff that only accredited engineers can do the jobs. Intel hires BEng, for example. And with such phenomena happening, it makes the BEng a great course to sell, as it still promises jobs (as long as you get a good class) while it comes cheaper and faster than others. The drawback is the not-so-important (for now) accreditation thingy in Malaysia. Oh, one more thing, it is not uncommon to do the route of BEng, followed by a more specialised MSc (Master of Science, a postgraduate degree in UK). For instance, a BEng in Mechanical Engineering and later a MSc in Aerodynamics.

Of course, I may be biased, although I try to be as neutral as possible by supplying evidence for my claim.

Building a forum + blog

I want to build a website with a main page like LYN which display forum's current activity but also displays newest blog activity.

has been considering using joomla as main cms+blog.but joomla is too complicated.

The blog will only be limited to some users so i might have to or not use a bridge between the forum and blog. been looking at wordpress as blog as it have user friendly interface for my friends to blog. they are not that tech savvy to handle joomla.

been wanting a clean forum interface like IPB but a free one. can i make a template for phpbb so that it will look exactly like ipb?

PETALING JAYA: A 19-year-old Sri Lankan student has been hospitalised after she was raped and robbed by a man while walking back to her rented house in Tasik Semenyih.

The psychology student from Nottingham University was alone when the man approached her and hit her on her head using a sharp object, causing her to lose consciousness.

Kajang OCPD Asst Comm Shakaruddin Che Mod said the man dragged her into an empty house in the area before raping and robbing her at about 8pm on Wednesday.

The girl was shocked to find the man on top of her when she regained consciousness.

“When she became conscious, the man fled,” he said.

Police have yet to record any statements as the woman was not in the right frame of mind to talk.

ACP Shakaruddin said no arrests had been made so far.

CPU hiccup

Problem: CPU hiccups every second or so

Actually its been going on since a long time ago, but i didnt pay much attention since i only use this comp for browsing. but today i want to solve this problem since its very annoying. hope can be solved.

Google says this prob:

1. PS not enuf power (if this the problem die la, using laptop how to change power supply)

or

2. background service (malware)

As stated, wan to find the cheapest mobo possible to replace my mobo. i think its mobo's fault coz there is no display + cant turn off after turn on.

All i want is:

slot for my AMD proc
2 ram slot to support my 2x 2gb ddr2 ram
1 sata slot for my hdd
2 ide slot for dvd/ another hdd
1 pcie slot for my hd4850

..... my third fried mobo. hope this time buy can last. plz suggest tq.budget around rm200

Provider: Screamyx

Router: Dlink DIR-635

Location: Seri Kembangan

Problem: frequent "page not found" while browsing.

Have u called Screamyx? : NO

Action(s) taken: Changed the DNS server of both router and computer to opendns

The problem occurs randomly. on some days, the browsing will be very smooth. On the other days (today included), there will be frequent error while browsing. even google didnt load. I suspect its not screamyx's problem becoz i onced 'borrowed' my neighbour's unprotected wireless network and the browsing were smooth. problem is, now the neighbour is not very kind anymore .

anyone plz help.

keyboard problem

My lappy (dv2) left ctrl button and left alt button has switched function. the right ctrl & alt button works juz fine. how to correct this using software, or any other method. i dont want to go the hp service centre. lazy wait 2 weeks. coz its only a small problem.

ubuntu in pendrive

Hi guys.

im totally noob in linux. yesterday i managed to install ubuntu 8.10 in my 4gb pendrive using a guide in the internet (www.pendrivelinux.com).

I can run the distro, connect to the internet, but cant enable beryl. i tried downloading the driver from ati site (using ati hd4850), but when i run the program(its .run, i juz double click it) it said "must run as superuser" then i realize i was logged in as live session user. how to create a new superuser in live session persistent mode (thats the only mode available when using pendrive) or install the driver when logged in as live session user?

IGP power consumption

i need to find a laptop 4 my sis. hope to a nice one. been interested in cq40 -115 au.

This lappy has radeon 3200 igp. the big Q is, how is the power consumption & heat of this IGP compared to intel x3100.

i'v been using a compaq laptop with nvidia 7150. this lappy is a palm burner and battery sucker. compared to my fren's intel igp that is.
