Lionel Messi's dramatic late winner in Argentina's World Cup match against Iran rescued one Las Vegas gambler from losing $350,000 (205,000 pounds).

Messi curled in a stunning finish from outside the area in injury time to seal a 1-0 win in the Group F clash.

That strike, Messi's second of the tournament in Brazil, came as great relief to the Argentina fans at the stadium Belo Horizonte who are dreaming of a third World Cup triumph for their country, but one punter 6,000 miles away will have felt a huge weight lift from their shoulders for a very different reason.

An unnamed better staked $230,000 on Argentina to beat Iran at a William Hill outlet at Las Vegas' Tuscany Casino. Such were the short odds of such a bet, it would only return a profit of $20,000.

According to company spokesman Michael Grodsky, it was the largest wager on the World Cup taken by William Hill, but that did not stop the same customer returning on Friday to put another $120,000 on the same outcome.

That pushed their potential winnings up to $30,000, just less than 10 percent of the amount that would be lost if Iran upset the odds and achieved a positive result.

Carlos Queiroz's side were just minutes away from doing just that, as they resisted the star-studded Albiceleste attack for the 90 minutes, only to succumb to four-time World Player of the Year Messi's strike in the first minute of injury time and see one very relieved gambler collect their winnings.

ROSMAH hosts fashion show in Paris

The lavish batik, royal weave of Pahang tenun and exquisite modern songket took centre stage at the Eleganza fashion show in the capital of innovations in fashion on Wednesday.

The traditional and unique textiles were featured by four of Malaysia's top designers in their exclusive collections, which provided international fashion designers and aficionados a glimpse into the potential of haute couture in Malaysia.

Radzuan Radziwill's collection "Faire de Butik", Syaiful Baharim's "Enchanting Pua", Khoon Hooi's "Gardens of Versailles" and Tom Abang Saufi's "Urbanulu" were paraded by models on the runway and greeted with applause.

The uniqueness of the traditional textiles were transformed into stylish contemporary and wearable beautiful jackets made from quality batik, haute couture wear as well as pret-a-porter.

The Malaysian prime minister's wife, Rosmah Mansor hosted the Eleganza fashion show. It was attended by 300 invited guests from the fashion industry in Paris at Le Pre Catelan in Paris, France, in conjunction with the 2014 Global Summit of Women.
Also present were Tourism and Culture Minister Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz (left), Women, Family and Community Development Minister Rohani Abdul Karim and Malaysian ambassador to France Ismail Omar.

The show organised by Matrade, Tourism Malaysia and the Malaysian Handicraft Development Corporation (Kraftangan Malaysia) was a good platform to promote the uniqueness and variety of quality local textiles.

In her welcoming speech, Rosmah said she hoped the efforts in showcasing Malaysian fabrics would be well received and appreciated, especially by the French fashion houses.

"I can think of no better place to showcase our unique Malaysian styles and heritage in fashion than in Paris.

"These fabrics are part of the Malaysian heritage. They are steeped in tradition with a history that dates back centuries. We are proud to have kept the tradition alive," she said.

Meanwhile, bridal fashion designer for Diamant Blanc, based in Paris, Kim Ktorza was impressed with the Malaysian designers' creativity and ideas which were reflected in the traditional materials of batik, tenun and songket.
"This is the first time I'm seeing Malaysian batik and I like it so much. I hope we can collaborate one day for the batik to be introduced in my collection," she told Bernama after the fashion show.

Siti Hasbiah Ali from Pua Indah Sdn Bhd said the showcase was an effort taken by the government to bring Malaysian traditional textiles into the international market.

Bloomberg: No regime change makes M'sia weak

The fact that there has been no regime change in Malaysia since Independence is turning the country into the region's “weakest link”, Bloomberg says.

In an opinion piece today, the business newswire said that this has led to “complacency” in Putrajaya and is holding back the country's economy despite its rich potential.

“The need for change is becoming acute, though, as China's dominance grows and neighbours like the Philippines get their acts together.

“And Malaysia? Well, Prime Minister Najib (Abdul) Razak's lackluster party is clinging to power...

“The government's handling of Malaysia Air(lines) Flight 370 said it all. Its deer-in-the-headlights response to the plane's disappearance was the product of an insular political culture.

“The trouble is, that insularity is holding back a resource-rich economy that should be among Asia's superstars, not its weakest links,” Bloomberg's William Pesek writes.

Pesek said that he shares his views with UK-based Oxford University-linked think tank Oxford Economics, which released a report that termed Malaysia the “riskiest” economy in Asia.

'Climate of entitlement'

He said that Oxford's biggest concern is the fact that Malaysia is a “one-party state”, which has perpetuated racial policies which works does not encourage innovation.

“Its 40-year-old, pro-Malay affirmative-action programme chips away at the country's competitiveness more and more each passing year.

“The scheme, which disenfranchises Malaysia's Chinese and Indian minorities, is a productivity and innovation killer. It also has a corrupting influence on the political and business culture,” Pesek writes.

Pesek further cites Sarah Fowler, a researcher with Oxford Economics, as saying that all is not well in Malaysia's economy despite the country escaping investment bank Morgan Stanley's “fragile five” list of shaky emerging economies.

She said that this is driven by Malaysia's high debt level, racial policies and business as usual attitude, especially within Umno.

"A climate of entitlement amongst the Malay community limits entrepreneurialism and vested interests within Umno still resist change," Fowler is cited as saying.

Fowler said that while all is well on Malaysia's surface, external debts have risen to close to 40 percent of gross domestic product (GDP), a level higher than India.

Its current account surplus, a measure of the difference between cash coming in and going out of the country, has also dwindled from 16 percent of GDP in 2008 to 3.7 percent in 2013.

She added that Malaysia has the biggest short-term capital flows, or hot money, among the 13 emerging markets the think tank tracks, including neighbouring Indonesia.

Malaysia Airlines faced another accident today when one of its B737-800 was hit by an airport baggage vehicle while it was parked at the tarmac today.

Photos sighted by Malaysiakini of the incident at the Kuala Lumpur Airport showed a rip on the underside of the aircraft body.

Confirming the incident, MAS said that the airport baggage vehicle "hit the fuselage of the aircraft" resulting in damage.

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia has to free itself from the constraints of “crony capitalism” and stop racial and religious rhetoric in order to compete on the global stage, business tycoon Tan Sri Francis Yeoh said today.

The managing director at YTL Corporation and eldest son of founder, billionaire Tan Sri Yeoh Tiong Lay said 85 per cent of YTL's business are in Britain, Singapore and Australia because these countries do not tolerate corruption, practice meritocracy and stand for the rule of law.

“For example in Singapore, we own a third of Singapore's electricity, there is no subsidy of any kind, there is no cronyism of any type.

“The good thing about these three territories, I don't have to kowtow to the prime minister before I do deal, I don't have to see them even, even after I've won the deal.

“I turn west because of this transparent, coherent regulatory framework,” he said during Pemandu's Global Malaysia Series at the Securities Commission.

MACC clears RM32mil loan to businessman Deepak

There are no elements of corruption in Bank Rakyat's RM32 million interest-free 10 year loan to a carpet businessman Deepak Jaikishan, said the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

In a statement today, it said initial investigations found it was more a bank governance issue.

"However, the commission will take appropriate followup action including calling the relevant parties if we receive new information," it said.

A news portal recently quoted the bank's former chairman Sabbaruddin Chik (right), as alleging the businessman had sought the intervention of a politician to get the loan on highly favourable terms.

Deepak is reportedly a close friend of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and his wife Rosmah Mansor.

Sabbaruddin also allegedly said that the termination of his tenure as Bank Rakyat chairman was directly connected to the bank board’s decision regarding the Deepak loan.

The MACC also pointed out that not all complaints or allegations reported by the media or raised by any party is corruption.

"The MACC Act 2009 only provides provisions for investigating cases with elements of corruption.

"In this regard, the commission hopes this case is also investigated by other related agencies under the relevant laws so that action can be taken against a certain party because of failure to comply with regulations," the statement said.

Meanwhile Gua Musang MP Razaleigh Hamzah, commenting on this issue, said that Bank Rakyat is not under the Banking Act, and it is not under the purview or control of Bank Negara but under cooperatives.

“However, it is ‘not on’ to provide such deals. Under what government policy are they extending this very good facility? Based on a request made by a customer?” asked the former finance minister.

WORLD 1 Lee Chong Wei has one piece of advice for the underperforming Liew Daren.
Forget about past glories and focus on rebuilding your career.
World No 66 Daren thought he was the next best thing after Chong Wei after winning the French Open in 2012, and listened little to his coaches in training.
“After he returned from France, I advised him to change his character and train harder to achieve more success. But he didn’t listen to coaches.
“I scolded him for that,” said Chong Wei after overcoming Son Wan Ho 21-17, 21-17 in the first singles match against Korea in New Delhi yesterday.
“He thought he was very good after winning the title. He did not push hard enough. I think winning the title affected him mentally.”

Chong Wei was responding to the team’s decision to replace Daren with debutant Goh Soon Huat in the line-up against South Korea yesterday.
“The pressure is different when you are up there. I shared my bad experiences with him to motivate him. I once dropped to World No 7 but it did not deter me. I instead trained harder and worked my way up.
“I have only one advice for Daren… forget about the victory in the French Open and focus on rebuilding your career. He is 27 years old, not a junior anymore. As his teammate, I hope he will find his way back.”
Daren has been the target of critics after his poor run in the Thomas Cup. He lost his third singles matches to India and Germany.
“National coaches Rashid Sidek and Tey Seu Bock, and I spoke to Daren after the defeats. He claimed he went blank on court. However, I could see he was motivated before those matches.
“We, as a team, will try to help him bounce back during the tournament. He was dropped because of failure to perform.

BN candidate Mah Siew Keong urges Teluk Intan voters not to be influenced by their children, who work outstation, while casting their ballots.

According to Sin Chew Daily, Mah says the children, who stay and work in other cities, do not know the local issues and problems in the constituency.

In the last general election, he points out, many outstation voters returned and influenced the voting choice among the elderly.

"Your children wouldn't know that (issues), when you need service, you need a local representative," he says.

Bukit Gelugor by-election candidate Abu Backer Sidek Mohammad Zan will take legal action against Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng over injuries sustained after he threw himsef in front of the CM's car.

Abu Backer claims that he had sustained a fractured pelvis, broken rib and lung infection after the incident in front of the Penang state legislative assembly yesterday.

He said that he would not have to throw himself at the car if Lim had acted fairly and met with him, like he met with DAP candidate Ramkarpal Singh.

Selain Ibrahim yang juga ahli parlimen Pasir Mas, gelaran Datuk bekas setiausaha kerajaan negeri, Datuk Wan Hashim Wan Daud juga ditarik balik.

Menurut kenyataan media yang difakskan ke Malaysiakini, Setiausaha Kerajaan negeri Kelantan, Datuk Seri Setia Raja Mohd Aiseri Alias berkata lima pingat yang dianugerahkan kepada Wan Hashim ditarik balik.
