Aircond compressor location

I am planning to buy an aircond but I am not sure where to install the compressor. Should it be below the blower or above or it does bot make any difference?

All my previous airconds have their compressors installed below the aircond. But, I saw many houses have installed their compressors above on the roof of their houses.

Also, if I install it on my roof or outdoors where it is susceptible to rain, would it not rust and reduce its operational duration?
