Tunnelling Works at MRT SBK Line 100% Complete!

MEDIA RELEASE

TUNNELING WORKS FOR
MRT PROJECT 100% COMPLETED

Breakthrough of tunnel boring machine at Pasar Seni Station site marked the end of tunneling works

Kuala Lumpur, 21 April 2015: Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) held a commemoration ceremony today to mark the completion of tunneling works for the Klang Valley MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line (SBK Line).

A significant milestone was achieved when a tunnel boring machine (TBM) broke through at the Pasar Seni MRT Station site on 11 April 2015, signifying the end of tunneling works for the MRT Project. The machine was a Variable Density Tunnel Boring Machine, which was the first TBM to be launched for the Project. It was launched on 30 May 2013 by Prime Minister YAB Dato’ Sri Najib Tun Razak at the Cochrane site.

This TBM, also called Pudu 1, covered the longest drive of 4.4km among the 8 TBMs used for the SBK Line. It broke through at three stations – Tun Razak Exchange, Bukit Bintang and Merdeka – before reaching Pasar Seni. The tunnel it excavated will accommodate trains heading north towards Sungai Buloh. In total, this TBM had built 3,039 rings.

In total, a 9.5km underground section was excavated by tunnel boring machines, from Semantan Portal to Maluri Portal.

“This is indeed a major milestone for the MRT Project, as our engineers conducted tunneling works successfully and smoothly. It also saw the usage of new technology – the Variable Density Tunnel Boring Machine,” said MRT Corp Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Sri Shahril Mokhtar.

“However, the end of tunnelling is not the end of underground construction for the Project. We still need to complete construction of the seven underground stations, in which is progressing very well,” he added.

The Variable Density TBM is the first of its kind in the world, jointly manufactured by MRT underground works contractor MMC Gamuda KVMRT (T) Sdn Bhd and Herrenknecht AG of Germany. It is an advanced form of TBM used to excavate in the Kuala Lumpur Limestone Formation, which consists of unpredictable soil conditions, posing a challenge to tunneling. This formation can be found beneath Bukit Bintang in the city centre along the SBK alignment.

The features of the Variable Density TBM enabled excavation works to take place without major incidences of sinkholes or ground settlement.

Kuala Lumpur Mayor, Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib was also present at the ceremony.

“An MRT for Kuala Lumpur will be a huge benefit for its citizens. As the population grows, there will be more cars on the road,” Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal said.

He also mentioned how improved public transport can boost the city’s tourism industry.

“Accessibility and mobility will be improved within the capital city and also within the Klang Valley. I hope to see the city further prosper with better public transport.

At the Pasar Seni site, Dato’ Sri Shahril and Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal, along with a delegation from Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur viewed the twin tunnels that had been excavated, one of which saw the final TBM breakthrough.

As of March 2015, overall completion of underground works is 76.49%. The underground section will be ready and operational by 31 July 2017.

END
Congratulations MRT Corp and MMC Gamuda!

LRT and MRT not speaking to each other meh?

http://www.thestar.com.my/Business/Busines...-MRT-and-LRT-l/

PETALING JAYA: Mass Rapid Transit Corp Sdn Bhd (MRT Co) and Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd should immediately discuss the integration of the proposed light rail transit (LRT) line 3 and MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line in Bandar Utama for seamless connectivity as well as to avoid unnecessary cost of connecting the two lines at a later stage.

According to an industry expert familiar with the matter, ideally, integration of the two lines should be done at the design stage to be cost-effective and to create seamless connection for the comfort of future commuters.

“This is because Bandar Utama, with two nearby shopping malls, is also adjacent to a huge residential area and it is a huge catchment area for any rail operator.

“Thus, integration of two different lines must be done properly to avoid cases like the Masjid Jamek station and the Ampang and Kelana Jaya Lines where integration was done at a later stage.

“As far as I know the LRT line 3 was supposed to be from Kelana Jaya to Klang. Thus, this integration in Bandar Utama, if it’s true, will incur unnecessary cost, especially if it is done at later stage,” he told StarBiz.

Currently, the integration of the LRT and the ongoing MRT project involves three stations – Pasar Seni, Maluri and KL Sentral.

He explained that integration planning at Bandar Utama should be done now as phase one of the MRT line from Sungai Buloh to Semantan via Bandar Utama was ongoing.

“Ideally, integration planning and design should be done before the key access date,” he said.

Key access date reflects the formal handover of the complete viaduct construction to the station developer at a particular station.

For the MRT line involving Bandar Utama, UEM Construction Sdn Bhd won the bid for package S3, which is for the construction and completion of The Curve, One Utama Shopping Centre and Dataran Sunway elevated stations and other associated works.

For the viaduct, Mudajaya Corp Bhd was awarded the V3 contract that involves 6km of alignment and includes three MRT stations, namely, The Curve, 1Utama and Taman Tun Dr Ismail. He pointed out that integration of two different rail lines should ideally be aligned side by side and that it involved many aspects such as comfortable and short walkways, ticketing systems and land issues.

“At this juncture, it looks like the LRT line 3 would take some more time pending approval from the Government and public display, and this would affect MRT Co’s plan for an effective connection for the proposed LRT line involving Bandar Utama,” he said.

Currently, the RM23bil MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line is at a 41.3% completion stage and the first phase is on schedule to operate in two years.

StarBiz, on May 12, reported that Prasarana has already completed the feasibility study on the third light rail transit line (LRT 3) covering 36km from Bandar Utama in Damansara to Klang, estimated at RM9bil.

Prasarana is also currently busy with the ongoing Ampang and Kelana Jaya Lines extension project worth at RM7bil.
Does anyone find it odd that PM never mentioned MRT Line 2 and 3 in the budget speech today?? Has it been shelved or put on hold??

Public Utility Maps NOT Up to Date?

TMI

I wonder why Malaysian utilities do not have updated maps. It is a good suggestion from MRT to have this one body to regulate (although really this will be a new cost issue for the government), but in reality, shouldn't we have the TNBs and SYABAS' update their information as part of their KPI?? Its such a sad state of affairs. And now projects are likely to cost more?
