A Science Teacher Lost 60 Pounds Eating Nothing But McDonald’s

John Cisna, a science teacher from Iowa, saw the 2004 documentary “Super Size Me” and was curious to see if his health would deteriorate the way filmmaker Morgan Spurlock’s did, he told local news station KCCI 8 back in January.

Cisna has managed to keep off the weight months later. He just published a book called “My McDonald’s Diet” about the experience.

“Eating McDonald’s for breakfast, lunch, and dinner probably saved my life,” Cisna says in his book, which offers daily meal plans for eating at the fast food chain.

Here’s a photo showing his progress.

To jump-start his weight loss, Cisna started eating at the fast food chain for every meal and working on an amateur documentary with a team of students.

Rather than ordering huge meals, he tried to adhere to a 2,000-calorie diet.

When Cisna told the local McDonald’s franchise about his plan, the restaurant said they’d give him meals free of charge.

Here’s what he’d eat on a typical day:

Breakfast: Two Egg White Delights, a bowl of maple oatmeal and a bottle of 1% milk.

Lunch: Salad.

Dinner: A Value Meal with fries. Cisna said his favorite is the Big Mac.

Cisna said his unconventional diet proves that fast food isn’t evil.

“It’s our choices that make us fat not McDonald’s,” he told the news station.

But health experts argue that eating a McDonald’s diet is a bad idea.

Even if you lose weight, most fast food items lack nutrients necessary for a healthy diet.

The Gadget That Will Make You Feel Like A Jedi Is Just Months Away

After years of tweaking, the technology that will make you think you’re a Jedi — or maybe Tom Cruise in “Minority Report” — is gearing up for its launch later this year.

Canadian company Thalmic Labs attracted millions of potential customers last February when it introduced a video for the Myo armband, which lets you control electronic devices with simple hand and arm gestures. The original video, which Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak called “very cool and impressive,” is embedded below

Thalmic Labs shipped its initial batch of Myo armbands for developers last December (those were the “alpha” designs), but the company said it delayed Myo’s public launch because the team wanted to make significant improvements to the industrial design.

“We started last fall, around October, redesigning the industrial design,” Stephen Lake, co-founder and CEO of Thalmic Labs, told Business Insider. “We wanted to make it more durable, thinner, and reduce the complexity that made it something more manufacturable. One of the big challenges is making a one-size-fits-all that will also be slim. We didn’t want to make multiple sizes, but to meet that constraint the original product had a complex mechanism that made it bulky. We decided that wasn’t the quality we wanted to release.”

Earlier this month, Thalmic showed off the “final design” for its Myo armband, which features a thinner, stretchier design: It looks like a series of small black rectangles connected by flexible rubber cables on the top and bottom that can stretch out or contract like an accordion, depending on your arm size. The latest version of Myo is also roughly half the weight of the alpha design.

The technology that makes Myo possible — electromyography (EMG), which doctors and scientists use to record electrical activity from muscles — is something Lake and his Thalmic Labs co-founder Matt Bailey have been experimenting with since their undergrad years at University of Waterloo, where the two tinkerers worked on with a wearables device that could help blind people navigate using sensors. Lake said he felt there was a “major gap” in enabling wearable technology because there wasn’t an interface that was good enough.

“It was clear that our hands and fingers were the key, as voice commands, eye tracking, etc. don’t work well in broad applications, so we wanted a way to plug our hands into the digital world,” Lake told Business Insider. “Cameras don’t work well to accomplish this in mobile scenarios (which is the most common approach to gesture recognition). Eventually we ended up with a hypothesis that we may be able to use EMG to accomplish this. A few months later we had an early prototype that proved our hypothesis.”

Thalmic’s latest Myo performs like the older model: The arm band measures the electrical signals in your arm muscles and detects the gesture you’re going to make before your hand even has a chance to act.

In the months leading up to the public release, Lake said Thalmic is going to keep working on its software and applications. “Much of the work is planned in that area,” he says.

“We’re putting a lot of work into making our SDK and the software development with Myo very easy and straightforward while also allowing more advanced developers to do what they want to do,” Thalmic Labs co-founder Aaron Grant said in a recent Google Hangout.

Thanks to developers, Lake says he is seeing “new applications emerge all the time” for his smart armband.

“We’re doing a number of things for developers to make it really easy to use the Myo to control all your different technologies,” Grant said. “We’re doing all the heavy lifting in terms of integrating Myo with all the various platforms and different kinds of devices and software you might want to use and providing a really easy way for developers to take that and be really creative with it.”

It’s not yet clear how practical Myo will be for controlling complex electronics like computers, but thanks to the massive amount of developer interest — Thalmic Labs initially received over 10,000 applications to join the Myo developer program — Lake doesn’t seem concerned about the future of his fledgling wearable device.

“Home automation is a pretty interesting niche within the developer community,” Lake said. “Internally, we think about applications in categories for consumers, so we’re thinking about gaming and these sort of small and interactive devices around us. But we’re always trying to think about connecting to these devices and letting us control them in real-time.”

The consumer version of the Myo armband, as well as the developer kit, are both currently available to pre-order. Thalmic Labs says the developer kit will start shipping in July, while the consumer version will release around September. Both models cost $149.

JAIS tahan pengantin di acara kahwin Hindu

Jabatan Agama Islam Selangor (JAIS) menahan seorang pengantin wanita perkahwinan tersebut sedang berlangsung bersama pasangannya, seorang lelaki beragama Hindu.

Laporan Sinar Harian menyebut, wanita berusia 32 tahun yang lengkap berpakaian pengantin itu ditahan oleh pasukan anggota JAIS di Petaling Jaya pada kira-kira jam 10 pagi.

Beliau seterusnya dibawa ke ibu pejabat pihak berkuasa tersebut untuk siasatan, semalam.

Operasi tersebut dijalankan dengan bantuan anggota polis yang berkawal di luar kawasan majlis tersebut, manakala keluarga mempelai memberi kerjasama baik, lapor akhbar tersebut.

JAIS dilaporkan menjalankan siasatan mengikut Seksyen 4 Enakmen Agama Bukan Islam (Kawalan Pengembangan di Kalangan Orang Islam) 1988.

Peruntukan itu meliputi kesalahan memujuk, mempengaruhi atau menghasut orang beragama Islam supaya mengubah keimanan.

Laporan yang memetik satu sumber tidak dinamakan itu menyebut, bapa wanita tersebut yang beragama Hindu sebelum ini menukar agama wanita berkenaan kepada Islam.

“Wanita itu tidak mengetahui bapanya mendaftarkan dia dan tiga adik-beradiknya sebagai beragama Islam.

“Wanita itu hanya mengetahui perkara itu selepas saudara terdekat melihat sijil kelahiran (status agama) mereka tercatat agama Islam,” kata sumber berkenaan seperti dipetik akhbar harian itu.

Sumber itu juga menyebut pengantin berkenaan serta adik beradik mereka dibesarkan oleh ibu mengikut ajaran Hindu setelah lelaki berkenaan meninggalkan keluarga berkenaan sejak pengantin wanita itu masih kecil.

Menurut sumber itu lagi, pengantin wanita itu pernah memohon penukaran status agama di Mykad pada tahun 2007 namun tidak berjaya kerana penukaran tersebut memerlukan tandatangan bapanya.

Menurut sumber itu, pengantin wanita tersebut melakukan permohonan sekali lagi pada April lalu.

Menurut e-mel Johann kepada Astro AWANI ,kesemua dokumen sokongan yang diperlukan telah diserahkan kepada Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara (JPN) termasuk satu salinan sijil kelahiran dan kad pengenalan, kad pengenalan bapanya dan borang pindaan bertarikh Oktober 7, 2011. Dia juga telah menyerahkan kad pengenalan adiknya dan surat rasmi daripada Pejabat Agama Negeri Pulau Pinang yang menyatakan bahawa namanya tiada dalam senarai mereka bagi membuktikan dengan jelas bahawa dia bukannya beragama Islam.

Dalam suratnya kepada JPN, dia telah cuba untuk menyelesaikan isu ini sejak berumur 13 tahun dan memandangkan permohonannya dipindahkan daripada satu jabatan ke jabatan lain selain terpaksa melaui prosedur yang merumitkan, Johann berputus asa dan menghentikan usahanya.

Hanya sehingga dua tahun lalu yang Johann menyedari kesan kesilapan ini banyak menimbulkan kesulitan kepada kehidupannya - Johann tidak boleh berkahwin dengan wanita impiannya dengan status agama yang tidak betul tertera pada kad pengenalannya .

Menyedari kerumitan ini , Johann sekali lagi memulakan usaha untuk membetulkan kad pengenalannya, namun hanya menerima kekecewaan akibat daripada jawapan yang dikatakan tidak menggalakkan daripada JPN. Kini, telah hampir tiga tahun namun kesnya masih belum selesai.

Menurut Johann, jawapan yang terakhir daripada JPN lebih membinggungkannya. Dalam jawapan yang bertarikh 19 Mei 2014 , JPN menyarankan agar Johann mendapatkan pengesahan bahawa dia bukan beragama Islam daripada Mahkamah Syariah. Jawapan ini membuatkan Johann kecewa dengan cara JPN mengendalikan kesnya.

Johann kini telah mendapatkan nasihat undang-undang dan merayu supaya JPN untuk meneliti kes beliau segera.

Astro AWANI telah menghubungi JPN hari ini bagi mendapatkan komen dan menurut seorang pegawai di sana, kes Johann ini sedang diteliti dan masih dalam siasatan. Tambah pegawai itu lagi, JPN tidak boleh memberikan apa-apa komen lanjut selagi belum mendapat arahan pihak berkuasa yang bertanggungjawab.

Muslim dad irrelevant in daughter’s bid to prove Hindu faith, say shariah lawyers

In a case revealed after a contentious raid at a Hindu temple wedding ceremony, shariah lawyers say security guard Abdul Majid Gulam Kader has no say in his daughter Zarinah’s efforts to change her religious status if the woman can prove she has not been practising the Islamic faith.

They said Zarinah, who was held by Selangor Islamic authorities at her traditional Hindu wedding ceremony in a temple a week ago, was not a minor and the Shariah Court would give weight to her statement.

Moreover, Majid had abandoned the family and this reflected badly on him as a Muslim father and head of family, the lawyers said, commenting on media reports quoting Majid as saying he would never consent to his daughter renouncing Islam.

Majid told The Star that Zarinah and her three siblings were Muslims as both he and his wife were Muslims when the children were born.

“They were born to Muslim parents and that makes them Muslim, too,” Majid was quoted saying.

He said he would not sign any documents needed for any of his four children to change their names at the National Registration Department (NRD).

Lawyer Abdul Shukor Ahmad said the Shariah Court has in the past issued certificates to facilitate the change in name and removal of the word "Islam" in the identity card once it was convinced that the applicants were not practising Muslims.

"It is only for Zarinah to prove that she was practising the Hindu faith, culture and tradition," he told The Malaysian Insider.

He said he gathered from media reports on the case, Zarinah only carried a Muslim name but did not practise the faith.

"The father has no role; he cannot come to court to object or be a stumbling block by refusing to sign any documents."

Shukor said the Guardianship of Infants Act 1961, which applied to both Muslims and non-Muslims, stated that parents could only decide for their children until the age of 18.

Shariah lawyer Kamar Ainiah Kamaruzaman said the Shariah Court would only want to verify her claim that she was not a Muslim.

"The question of her renouncing her religion does not arise because she is not a practising Muslim," she said.

Kamar Ainiah noted that the father had abandoned the family when he left home about 15 years ago.

"As head of family, why did he abandon them when he should have been there to provide religious guidance?”

Kamar Ainiah said the court would give more weight to statements from Zarinah’s mother and siblings in arriving at a conclusion in the matter.

Majid had denied Zarinah’s claims that her parents were Hindus when they married in 1980 and that he was later converted to Islam by a relative while her mother remained Hindu.

He told The Star that his father brought him and Zarinah’s mother, Vasantha, to non-governmental organisation Muslim Welfare Organisation Malaysia (Perkim) to convert her and wed them in 1979.

However, Zarinah told The Malaysian Insider her father left the family home after the birth of her brother in 1990, and her mother was not aware that they were Muslims because she was illiterate.

But Majid told The Star that he was thrown out of the family home in 2000 after he reprimanded his younger daughter for returning home late.

Last Sunday Jais officers interrupted Zarinah’s wedding after receiving reports that she could be a Muslim.

Kamar Ainiah said all Zarinah needed was a clearance certificate from the Shariah Court to enable her to remove the word "Islam" from her identity card and legally register her civil marriage. – June 9, 2014.

For A Brief Moment Last Week, Electricity Prices In Germany Dropped To Zero

Wind and coal power go head-to-head in Germany.

It didn’t last long — maybe an hour or so — but for a brief, electrifying moment, German power consumers got their juice for free.

The reason is demonstrated in a fascinating chart created by Bernard Chabot, a French renewable energy consultant, and published by Renewables International.

Germany is one of the world leaders in renewable energy. Wind and solar power vary with the weather — and it’s relatively rare for both to be cranking out full power at the same time — but May 11 was one of the exceptions: A rare windy day with glorious sunshine. As a result, in the early afternoon, the total amount of renewable power entering the grid (which also includes a bit of biomass and hydropower) met nearly three quarters of demand.

Due to regulations designed to encourage investment in clean energy, the grid is obliged to purchase every kilowatt produced by renewable sources. This creates certain challenges, since the yield varies over time. But there tends to be around 24 hours of warning before a surge from renewable power, in which case the system’s operators tell the producers of conventional energy to slow production.

As Chabot explained in a Skype chat, while it’s a relatively simple procedure to lower production at a natural gas plant, doing the same for a coal or nuclear plant can be difficult. So last week, rather than ramp down energy production, those plants opted to unload the extra power at firesale prices, which even briefly dipped into negative territory.

Interestingly, most of the wind farms and solar arrays in Germany are owned by private citizens, cooperatives and independent contractors. The big power companies have maintained a commitment to fossil fuels — a decision they are coming to regret.

The ability of Germany to produce so much power from renewables — an average of 27% for Q1 of 2014 — would seem to be good news for the planet, since fossil feuls have been definitively linked to climate change.

Just one little problem: With America suddenly up to its armpits in natural gas due to the fracking boom, Chabot explains, “The U.S. is now exporting low-cost coal to Europe and Asia.”

According to Bloomberg, “Eight hard-coal power plants are scheduled to start in the next two years” in Germany.

Meanwhile, the other leader in renewable energy, China — America’s chief economic and geopolitical rival — just announced an ambitious plan to triple production of solar power by 2017, and to increase wind capacity by 50% in the same time frame.

Chabot points out that both Germany and China owe their success to so-called feed-in tariffs, or FITs, which offer producers of clean energy long-term contracts that guarantee a fixed price, based on costs, designed to reward investment.

The U.S. would benefit from something similar, though Chabot proposes a more politically palatable name, such as “advanced renewable rates.”

But don’t hold your breath. On Thursday, the Senate struck down an $85 billion tax bill because Republicans rejected to a provision that would have renewed an expiring tax break for the wind industry.

yesterday my pc display suddenly went out... just bought the display card last year about rm600,.. but i can't find my receipt... so i tot gone case for warranty...

so today i went to buy the cheapest display card about rm130

and it still got no display, when i switch on,.. the PC moving, the harddisk moving,.. just the monitor is blank,... i plug in and plug out numerous time but still no display...

can anyone help me to solve this ???

Obama to meet Putrajaya’s critics during weekend visit, say activists

US President Barack Obama will meet representatives of a range of civil-society groups – including some which have harshly criticised Malaysia's government – when he visits the country this weekend, activists said.

Obama aims to strengthen ties with Muslim-majority Malaysia when he arrives tomorrow for a two-night stay, the first visit by a serving US president since 1966.

But he also will meet briefly on Sunday with nine leading activists and a Christian leader, said Farouk Musa, head of a moderate Muslim group and one of the invitees.

The activists will include representatives of the Coalition for Free and Fair Elections, or Bersih , an election reform movement whose supporters have clashed with authorities in huge recent protests.

The US has offered praise for Malaysia as a moderate Muslim, multi-faith country. But Human Rights Watch today urged Obama to "speak loudly" on rights in Malaysia, whose 57-year-old Muslim-dominated ruling coalition is accused by critics of clamping down on opponents and presiding over worsening religious intolerance.

"President Obama needs to take up concerns that basic rights are under threat, and that civil society is squeezed between restrictive laws and abusive government implementation," said John Sifton, the group's Asia advocacy director.

Bersih has brought tens of thousands to the streets, most recently in April 2012, in a series of demonstrations in recent years to protest an electoral system which it says is rigged to keep the coalition in power.

Each of the three Bersih demonstrations resulted in violent clashes with police.

In elections last year, the opposition led by Anwar Ibrahim won the majority of the popular vote for the first time ever but still failed to secure a parliamentary majority.

The US embassy did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the meeting.

Activists said Obama will also meet representatives of organisations including the Malaysian Human Rights Commission, the Council of Churches and a leading moderate Muslim group, among others.

Sifton called on Obama to meet Anwar, who faces five years in jail for a March sodomy conviction widely considered politically motivated.

Pakatan Rakyat cannot be "wishy-washy" on whether or not opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim would take over as Selangor menteri besar if he wins the Kajang by-election, former Bersih co-chair Datuk S. Ambiga said.

In a forum, titled "The Kajang move" in Subang Jaya last night, she said that PR owed it to the people in Kajang to explain its plans should it win the seat.

Ambiga said many people had come up to her to complain that they did not like the "wishy-washy" talk when it came to the MB issue.

"This thing about the MB... maybe he (Anwar) will be MB, maybe not. I find that unsatisfactory and I think that needs to be addressed," she said.

Anwar is Pakatan Rakyat's Kajang by-election candidate after PKR assemblyman Lee Chin Cheh resigned as assemblyperson on January 27.

The move sparked an uproar among PR supporters and non-governmental organisations who saw it as a "betrayal to the people".

It also fuelled speculation that Anwar would take over the MB position from Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim to resolve an internal squabble between the latter and Selangor PKR head Azmin Ali.

The party's strategic director Rafizi Ramli, who was also one of the panellists at the forum, denied the allegations, saying that Anwar's presence in the state government would help "reinforce" it.

Ambiga, however, who was also former Bar Council president, said it did not make sense to see a leader of the opposition take a "huge risk just to be an assemblyman".

"To me, there has to be more clarity about the position of the MB.

"The people of Kajang need to know if they are voting for the future MB of Selangor. They're entitled to know.”

Ambiga added that she was still not convinced about Rafizi's argument for the reasons behind PKR's “Kajang move”.

"I don't agree with all the reasons. I may not be convinced that this is the best way to do it but I understand."

She also hit out at PAS for sometimes taking positions that seemed to "veer away" from what its coalition partners were doing.

"I'm all for disagreements in the coalition. You don’t have to behave like robots and that's fine.

"But on a critical issue like this, many are concerned that they do not see a united front."

The activist called on the people of Kajang to reject politics based on racism and religious enmity, noting that they were getting a second opportunity to have their say.

"You are getting a second chance to vote. This is an opportunity to say what you want about everything that's happened since the last general election."

She said the "plus point" about the Kajang by-election was that the politicians were going back to the people.

"It's not at all like the Perak crisis because there, they didn’t go back to the people," she added.

Ambiga was referring to the constitutional crisis in Perak where Jelapang assemblyman Hee Yit Foong had quit DAP to become an independent aligned to Barisan Nasional.

Her defection, along with two others, had contributed to the fall of the Pakatan Rakyat-led state government.

The new Bersih 2.0 committee had previously said in a statement that Lee's actions were "deplorable" and that there was little difference between Lee's and Hee's actions in the 2009 Perak constitutional crisis.

Earlier yesterday, the Election Commission announced that nominations for the Kajang by-election will be on March 11 while polling days will be on March 23. – February 6, 2014.
