PONTIANAK, Oct 14 — Every few years, residents of Indonesia’s West Kalimantan province contend with devastating wildfires that emit a noxious haze causing illnesses, shuttering schools and stifling economic activity.

Now, they’ve had enough.

Lawyers have filed a class action case claiming “negligence, omission and failure” on the part of the government that has resulted in “a massive public health crisis” in the province on Borneo island.

Their target: President Prabowo Subianto and 26 officials from the national, provincial and local government, as well as police and emergency services.

For weeks, communities in West Kalimantan have been fighting fires that have razed vast expanses of land and befouled the air as far away as Malaysia and Singapore.

The government has deployed firefighters assisted by volunteers across affected areas, and used cloud-seeding and water-bombing, with limited success.

For the AMAN Indigenous people’s NGO, also a plaintiff, too much of the burden has fallen on individuals armed with little more than garden hoses and surgical masks.

Dengue cases soar 66pc, deaths hit 62 in Malaysia, almost double 2025 toll

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 9 — Dengue fever cases nationwide have increased sharply by 66 per cent with 65,979 infections recorded as of Epidemiological Week 35 compared with 39,616 during the same period last year, says Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil.

The unity government spokesman said the issue was among those discussed at the Cabinet meeting today, with the number of deaths due to dengue also showing a significant increase.

He said 62 cases of deaths due to dengue were recorded up to the 35th epidemiological week of this year, compared to 32 cases in the same period last year.

Malaysian police rescue 17 Jordanian children from lucrative KL begging syndicate

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 — Police have dismantled a suspected foreign child trafficking syndicate that allegedly forced 17 Jordanian minors into begging across the city’s busiest tourist and commercial districts.

The coordinated crackdown, dubbed Op Pintas Kasih, resulted in the rescue of eight boys and nine girls aged between three months and 14 years. The operation, launched on Aug 19, targeted a lucrative network operating primarily along the five-foot ways of Bukit Bintang and Chow Kit.

Officers from Bukit Aman’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) — specifically the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Division (D3), alongside the D6 and D7 units — conducted 13 simultaneous raids. Seven of these took place on public walkways while six targeted residential premises used by the group.

The exploitation was highly profitable. Initial investigations revealed that the syndicate generated between RM500 and RM1,000 in daily proceeds by using children to solicit money from the public. Police believe the group is part of an organised syndicate masterminded by Jordanian nationals who entered Malaysia legally on 90-day social visit passes.

Fifteen adults were apprehended during the raids, comprising seven men and eight women aged between 21 and 49. While the suspects are believed to be Jordanian nationals, five failed to produce valid travel documents. Authorities are currently investigating possible family ties between the victims and their alleged captors.

During the sweep, police seized 32 Jordanian passports, 14 mobile phones, four strollers used in the begging operations, and a hoard of cash in multiple currencies totalling over RM25,000.

Widening of KL-Karak Highway, third Genting Sempah tunnel project to be ready by 2030, says Works Minister

KUALA LUMPUR: The RM2.1bil Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway (KLK) widening project and construction of a third Genting Sempah tunnel are expected to be fully completed by March 8, 2030.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said construction started in March this year and was expected to be completed within the four-year period approved by the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM).

However, he said the developer had given an assurance that the strategic infrastructure project could potentially be completed a year ahead of schedule.

"The contract period is four years, which means completion is in 2030. But earlier, we were given an assurance by AFA Group that it could be completed in 2029,” he told a press conference after officiating the project groundbreaking ceremony here on Thursday (Aug 20).

Experts ring alarm bells on fentanyl

PETALING JAYA: Experts are sounding the alarm over the emerging trend of fentanyl use in the country, warning that its potency – coupled with limited access to crucial overdose-reversal medication outside hospitals – could lead to more fatal overdoses.

Malaysian Society for Harm Reduction (MHSR) president Prof Dr Sharifa Ezat Wan Puteh said fentanyl, an opioid used to relieve pain, is far more potent than morphine and heroin, and chemical testing is needed to confirm its use.

“It is also very difficult to test for it using the traditional method of urine screening.

“However, those already abusing other drugs are considered to be more likely to do the same with fentanyl,” she said.

She added that many users could also accidentally overdose because only small amounts are needed, while it would be difficult to prosecute them without clear confirmation of fentanyl use.
