Hello all, could any sifus here help me with a few queries?

I am going to Singapore in 2 weeks time and I realised my current phone and data plan (postpaid with Maxis) is of no use in SG! I was wondering if I can still receive calls or sms for this number?

Incidentally, I have a prepaid Hotlink number as well and data roaming is available for this number right?

Thank you for all the replies in advance! I am such a newbie when it comes to tele-communications matters!

The age old question: Malaysia or Singapore?

Hi all,

Like many others before me, I am presented with a dilemma- whether to seek employment in Malaysia or hop across the channel to our neighbouring country Singapore. Basically, I am waiting for two offers for a teacher training programme from both countries and am expecting to hear positive news from both. A bit about the programmes themselves,

1) Malaysia: A 2-year attachment with a school incorporating leadership and teacher training. Upon completion, one can either continue teaching or have an opportunity to seek work with the sponsors of this programme.

2) Singapore: A 1-year teacher training programme with NTU's National Insitute of Singapore and upon completion of the programme, I will be placed in Singaporean schools with a 3-year bond.

What would you guys do in such a position? Both have their merits and it would seem that option 2) is more sensible due to career prospects and money! Nevertheless, it would be good to hear a few comments from you guys here!

Thank you.
Quitting after 3 months

Has anyone here ever leave a job whilst still under probabtion? If so, how did it work out for you? I am contemplating leaving this current job of mine due to a mismatch of interest. One might argue that three months is too short a time to determine whether one is suited to the job or not but I just do not see myself being in this profession for long! The worst thing is, I am a fresh graduate with almost zero working experience, apart from this recent three months plus some other irrelevant stints from the past.

In fact, I am very clueless as to what I should do in the future! I love to teach but a teaching career in Malaysia sounds unpromising, especially if one is to teach in local government primary and secondary schools. For the record, I have a Masters of Mathematics under my belt from a very reputable university but the subject was not too appealing to employers here. Actuary, banking and finance were the only few fields that would accept someone like me but I have already established a dislike towards them, largely attributed to my current employment experience.

What would you guys do in such a situation? I am at my wits end! I fear quitting the job (without any security) will be my own undoing! Solidifying my eventual demise!

Finally, it will be great to hear as many comments/thoughts as possible from lowyat forummers!

Thanks

Proper bank job or a bank graduate scheme?

Hi all,

I was recently offered a job with a local bank for a risk management role and was wondering how would this compare to those on the bank graduate schemes such as the GMAP by Maybank, the management trainee scheme by Alliance Bank or the complete banker by CIMB and etc? Given that I am a fresh graduate, would participating in such a highly specialised role for the start of my career be disadvantageous to future career prospects?

My worries stem from the fact that those on the bank graduate schemes would acquire knowledge from a variety of fields within banking and finance, which appears to give them an extra edge for their future growth. At the same time, I am well aware that the field of risk management is gaining momentum for the past few years and seems to be a good place to be in right now.

Therefore, should I just accept this job or should I wait for the reply from the other banks?
