I remember, before Wuhan, there is not many of these happening. I can understand if it's seaside or someplace nice/touristy, but you can see people picnic in literally any garden, even in a small garden near any nice taman perumahan

ARM’s China Division Reportedly Gone Rogue And Operating Without Permission From UK Office

Recently, ARM has been in the spotlight as the subject of a potential acquisition by the US-based GPU brand, NVIDIA, from its current owner, Softbank. Unfortunately, the company has also been contending with what appears to be a case of mutiny from its division in China.

According to multiple reports, the company’s Shenzhen office, officially called ARM China, has reportedly gone rogue and the person leading the alleged rebellion is Allen Wu, the ex-CEO of the Chinese branch. For context, Wu was ousted by ARM back in June, after it was discovered that he had covertly set up an investing firm that would’ve put it in direct conflict with the company.

Sadly for ARM, Wu didn’t take being sacked with the decorum and tact expected of a CEO, and is both defying the order and still in control of ARM China’s businesses. Without the full consent from the UK office.

The situation has escalated to the point that Wu has even hired his own personal security and barred any ARM representatives or his board from entering the premises. Further, he has refused to host a planned event that would connect Chinese chipmakers with ARM. Despite him having sent out emails stating that he is open to talks and that no disruptions have taken place.

It is unclear, at this stage, how the drama between ARM’s UK office and ARM China will play out and as such, many key players and analysts are adopting a “wait and see” stance over the situation.

Importantly, none of the assays showed cross-reactivity with other respiratory (corona)viruses, except as expected for the SARS-CoV-1 E-gene.

We conclude that all RT-PCR kits assessed in this study may be used for routine diagnostics of COVID-19 in patients by experienced molecular diagnostic laboratories.

Notably, we performed our analysis using only a small number of clinical samples and we therefore advise that diagnostic laboratories in the field conduct additional and more extensive in-house clinical validations upon implementation of novel RT-PCR kits.

Considering our findings, we believe that all of the commercially available RT-PCR kits included in this study can be used for routine diagnostics of symptomatic COVID-19 patients. When performing virus diagnostics in populations that may be expected to display low viral loads, such as health-care workers with mild or no symptoms or patients during later stages of the infection (6), it might be advisable to use those kits that performed best regarding the positive identification of clinical samples, i.e. RT-PCR kits from R-Biopharm AG, BGI, KH Medical, and Seegene.

The conclusion has 2 parts, (1) their sample of testing is very small thus this test is not comprehensive and needed more validation / peer-test, (2) it suggest the use of more sensitive kits in testing patients with mild or no symptoms.

Trump halts World Health Organization funding over handling of coronavirus outbreak

President Donald Trump announced Tuesday he is halting funding to the World Health Organization while a review is conducted.

Trump said the review would cover the WHO's "role in severely mismanaging and covering up the spread of coronavirus."

Trump's announcement comes in the middle of the worst global pandemic in decades and as he angrily defends his own handling of the outbreak in the United States.

Amid swirling questions about whether he downplayed the crisis or ignored warnings from members of his administration about its potential severity, Trump has sought to assign blame elsewhere, including at the WHO and in the news media.

The US funds $400 million to $500 million to the WHO each year, Trump said, noting that China "contributes roughly $40 million."

His decision to withdraw funding from the WHO follows a pattern of skepticism of world organizations that began well before the coronavirus pandemic. Trump has questioned US funding to the United Nations, withdrawn from global climate agreements and lambasted the World Trade Organization -- claiming all were ripping off the United States.

BEIJING (Reuters): China reported an outbreak of a highly pathogenic strain of H5N1 bird flu at a farm in Shaoyang city of the southern province of Hunan, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs said on Saturday (Feb 1).

The case occurred on a farm with 7,850 chickens, 4,500 of which have died of the bird flu.

The authorities have culled 17,828 poultry following the outbreak. - Reuters

Chinese students defiant as university charter cuts 'freedom of thought'

SHANGHAI: A top Chinese university has removed references to “freedom of thought” from its charter, triggering a rare act of student defiance, while two other institutions added language stressing fealty to President Xi Jinping and the Communist Party.

A video circulating this week showed students at Shanghai’s Fudan University singing the school song – which extols “academic independence and freedom of thought” – in an apparent protest.

Fudan’s charter change was announced by the Ministry of Education on its website late Tuesday and criticism quickly trended on social media before China’s ever-vigilant online censors acted to delete posts and block discussion.

Besides removing “freedom of thought“, it adds “arming the minds of teachers and students with Xi Jinping’s new era of socialist ideology with Chinese characteristics.”

It also obliges faculty and students to adhere to “core socialist values” and build a “harmonious” campus environment – a code phrase for the elimination of anti-government sentiment.

The ministry announced similar pro-government changes for Nanjing University in eastern China, and Shaanxi Normal University in the north earlier this month, although neither institution had referenced freedom of thought previously.

Xi took office in 2012 and has implemented a campaign to increase the Communist Party’s grip and build a personality cult around himself that includes calls for adherence to a vaguely defined “Xi Jinping Thought“, recalling the days of Communist founder Mao Zedong.

Xi’s government has throttled activists and other critics while pushing Marxist dogma throughout Chinese society, from politics to culture and education.

But even Marxist students have faced a backlash, as police cracked down on some who supported a labour rights movement last year.

The risks of defying Xi have prevented major public pushback.

But Fudan, one of China’s most selective institutions of higher learning, is also among its most liberal, with a student body proud of its reputation for relative academic freedom.

In a brief clip, around two dozen people are seen singing the school song in a campus canteen on Wednesday as a security guard appears to be lightly admonishing them.

“I wish students had had the right or the time to express their opinions” on the charter change, one student who gave only his surname, Song, told AFP on Thursday.

Others said they do not expect much practical impact.

“I think people should be able to express themselves and I personally agree with freedom of thought,” said a woman who plans to enrol in Fudan graduate studies.

“I will continue to stand my ground.”

Beijing is currently grappling with Hong Kong anti-government protests in which university students have played a prominent role.

China’s government already keeps a close eye on university campuses, which incubated some of the country’s most momentous 20th-century political movements.

In 1989, thousands of university students took part in pro-democracy protests in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square, provoking a bloody crackdown that remains a taboo subject.-AFP

China Installs Malware On Tourists’ Phones Going Into Xinjiang

If you’re ever heading into China’s Xinjiang province, don’t be surprised if the border guards seize your phone as part of the security screening. Not only that, you should also expect the personnel to install malware onto your phone to see what’s inside.

A collaborated report by Motherboard, Süddeutsche Zeitung, NDR, the Guardian, and the New York Times states that the malware was supposed to be deleted after the spooking is over. But carelessness on the border guard’s part has brought this to light. The malware itself isn’t especially sophisticated either, and the border guard will order you to unlock your phone so that the malware can be installed.

The Chinese authorities are using the malware to not only download your text messages, calendar entries and phone logs, but also scan devices for a wide range of content. They include innocuous as well as extremist Islamic material, academic books on the religion, as even music from a Japanese metal band. That last one may seem out of place, but the band in question is called Unholy Grave, and happens to have a song called Taiwan: Another China.

You may be aware of China’s mass-surveillance efforts in the Xinjiang province. While this may be a part of that, it odd to see even foreigners and tourists being subjected to it.

Palestinian PM attacked in Gaza

RAMALLAH, March 15 — Palestinian prime minister Rami Hamdallah survived an apparent assassination attempt in Hamas-ruled Gaza this week when a roadside bomb blew up near his convoy.

The blast came as an October reconciliation agreement aimed at ending a decade-long split between Islamist movement Hamas and Fatah, which dominates Hamdallah’s government, edged towards collapse.

Here is what is known about the incident so far and the potential impact it could have:

What happened?

On Tuesday, Hamdallah was beginning a rare visit to the Gaza Strip when an explosion rocked his convoy, leaving him uninjured but lightly wounding six security guards.

The roadside bomb, believed to have weighed around 15 kilogrammes (33 pounds), exploded a few hundred metres from the border with Israel, shortly after Hamdallah’s convoy entered the territory. A second bomb failed to explode, officials said.

Who was behind it?

The short answer is that it’s not clear — there has been no claim of responsibility.

Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas immediately said Hamas was responsible, since it is in charge of security in Gaza, but stopped short of accusing the group of directly carrying it out.

Hamas in turn blamed Israel, which has assassinated multiple Palestinian leaders over the decades.

Other suspects include smaller, more radical Islamist groups that operate in Gaza but are opposed to Hamas.

A senior Hamas official narrowly survived an assassination attempt in October, believed to be the work of jihadists.

The attack could also have been the work of hardline Hamas factions opposed to negotiations with the Palestinian Authority.

Hamas said it had launched an investigation into the attack, detaining a number of suspects.

Why was it a rare visit?

Gaza, with its two million residents, forms a large part of the Palestinian territories.

But since Hamas seized control in 2007, the internationally-recognised government headed by Hamdallah has had only nominal power in the Strip.

Hamas controls the police, security and other government services, while Abbas’s administration is based in the West Bank. Its ministers visit only sporadically.

In October, Hamas agreed to hand Gaza back to Abbas’s Palestinian Authority in an Egyptian-brokered reconciliation deal which has since faltered.

Key sticking points include the fate of Hamas’s vast armed wing, which has fought three wars with Israel since 2008, and the future of tens of thousands of civil servants.

Little progress has been made in recent months.

Does this destroy reconciliation?

Hamdallah’s attempted assassination could prove a fatal blow for any remaining hope of a negotiated handover of power.

After the attack, Hamdallah said he still wanted reconciliation. But a senior Palestinian official told AFP that Abbas has suspended all official visits to Gaza for fear of further attacks.

That could further complicate aid programmes in the desperately poor enclave.

Israel has blockaded Gaza for a decade, its economy has slumped and residents currently receive only a few hours of electricity a day.

Western governments for the most part do not communicate with Hamas, so those who want to support Gaza do so through Hamdallah’s government.

His visit Tuesday was to open a wastewater treatment facility paid for by international donors.

Does it increase the risk of violence?

Gaza’s neighbours Egypt and Israel have expressed concern about the situation in Gaza in recent months, as fears grow that the deteriorating situation could lead to another round of conflict.

Neither has opened its border, however.

This week the US government held a meeting in Washington to discuss the future of Gaza — without any Palestinian representatives.

It did not invite Hamas, which it considers a terrorist organisation, while Abbas and his officials are boycotting Trump’s administration over his controversial recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Global powers are meeting in Rome Thursday to try to raise money for the UN’s agency for Palestinians refugees, which faces a desperate shortage after the US froze tens of millions of dollars in funds.

US President Donald Trump is expected to launch a proposal for Israeli-Palestinian peace in the coming weeks.

The contents have been kept secret but Hamas has already rejected it, accusing his administration of pro-Israel bias.

Any peace plan would likely be stillborn if it does not find a solution to the issues of Gaza and Hamas. — AFP
