Google Offers Free PC Upgrade For Windows users

https://ca.news.yahoo.com/google-offers-fre...-053819596.html

Something has to change. More than 500 million Windows 10 PC owners cannot upgrade to Windows 11 and now risk a security nightmare. Google says it has the answer, confirming a free PC upgrade for all those users. And it’s available now.

“You can transform your aging, unsupported laptop into a fast, secure, and sustainable machine for free,” Google says. The offer is to “upgrade” your PC to ChromeOS Flex. “Refresh the devices that you already own at no cost with a modern, cloud-based operating system that’s secure and easy to manage.”

While this offer has been available for a while, it’s now easier than ever to take it up. “Starting today, a new ChromeOS Flex USB Kit is available,” Google has just announced. Its new partnership with Back Market “helps you install our fast, secure and free operating system to modernize the PC or Mac you already own.

Google says Microsoft’s decision to end-of-life Windows 10 last October “left many people with a difficult decision: spend hundreds on a new device, or continue using an insecure, outdated one.” Windows 11’s infamously slow take-up meant more Windows users on a retired OS than ever before.

Microsoft continues to offer a free extended support update (ESU) program for any Windows 10 user, albeit that only runs to October this year. After that you’re out of support, unless you work for an organization with an enterprise plan in place.

While the ChromeOS Flex “upgrade” is free, the USB kit is not. “This physical kit, priced around $3 or €3,” Google says, “is reusable, and our partnership with Closing the Loop further minimizes e-waste.”

Avoiding e-waste is the other theme here, as well as securing hundreds of millions of devices. The threat of hundreds of millions of PCs becoming unusable has created headlines as various waste organizations calculate the landfill impact.

“The manufacturing process of a new laptop is responsible for a large part of its carbon footprint,” Google says. “ChromeOS Flex allows the already-manufactured device to be used for longer, which keeps hardware out of landfills and avoids the emissions of making a new device. Savings do not stop there, ChromeOS also consumes 19% less energy on average than other comparable systems.”

Whether it’s time to move from Windows to Chrome is a contentious decision to say the least. The situation for Windows 10 users with PCs that cannot run Windows 11 is perilous. This is at least a solution. Even if you buy a new machine, you can still upgrade your old one, perhaps for a younger family member.
Meanwhile, Microsoft is force-upgrading PCs running older versions of Windows 11 to the latest version, ensuring a level security playing field. The company is using AI to assess when PCs are ready to move, applying the upgrade automatically. While this could be done for Windows 10 PCs eligible for Windows 11, that isn’t being done as yet. Come October and the real end of support, that may change.

Ricoh GR IV didnt impress this guy

https://www.thephoblographer.com/2025/09/16...r-iv-but-i-cant

I Really Tried to Like the Ricoh GR IV. But I Can’t.
Chris Gampat
No Comments
Last updated on 09/08/2025
09/16/2025
5 Mins read

The Ricoh GRIV is a camera for a cult of street photographers who share an intrigue in a very specific camera that can do other things with difficulty. But if I had the option of buying it, I’d tell Ricoh to keep it. For the money, you can get nearly the same camera second-hand with better build quality, autofocus, and image quality. I really tried to like the Ricoh GR IV. I know the Ricoh fans are going to come for me and only listen to the photographers who shoot with the camera they love and use. Honestly, though, Ricoh could’ve done so much better with this camera and they had years to do so. But they didn’t. You probably don’t want to hear this, but there’s way too many good cameras out there for Ricoh to have made something like this.

On the last day before I wrote the review of this camera, the Costar app told me to make decisions based on what would be more interesting to write about instead of calculating. Essentially, I needed to let my pulse quicken a bit. So I took the camera out into a rainy situation and ended up having it in my pocket for most of the time.

The Ricoh GR IV has a 26MP BSI APS-C sensor with a fixed lens. The older Fujifilm X100F has also the same setup — for a cheaper price point. The Ricoh lacks weather resistance because they prioritized making the camera smaller while giving it heat dispersion. Indeed, the camera did sometimes heat up when using it. And more often than not, because billionaires and global warming likes to have its way with the weather, I’d need to shove the camera into my pocket.

That part, admittedly, was cool. But it would also be cool if I didn’t need to shove it into my pocket.

At times, I’d be in places where it didn’t always feel safe to have the camera out, so I’d put it in my pocket. But I could do the same with my older Canon G1x Mk III. The Canon is weather resistant, has a zoom lens, can zone focus, has wifi built in, can load up film presets, and is really small. In comparison, The Ricoh GR IV has image quality that feels like the same algorithmic stuff that we’re used to seeing online.

With that said, the Ricoh GR IV lacks imagination. And sometimes, the best street photography has imagination involved with foresight and being able to get the shot. Said street photography can make you think. But with this tool in my hand, I didn’t want to think. I instead, wanted to set it to focus away to 1.5 meters away, shoot in continuous shooting mode, and pray that I got something worth using.

Certain things really didn’t make sense with it either. I mean, I’m stopped down to f5.6 at times and focused to 1.5 meters away but I would expect so much more of the scene to be in sharp focus. However, that wasn’t always the case at all.

I’ve done a lot of comparisons so far in this RANTview. And if I was ever taught anything, it’s that comparison is the theft of joy. But in this situation, they’re trying to do everything that every other camera maker does.

After going through my notes on this camera, it really seems like it’s mostly the same camera from 2019.

One of the things that I was told to try is handholding the camera for really long periods of time. And sure, it can get you a steady shot without camera shake at 1 second and a bit beyond that. But so can mostly every camera on the market today.

Where the Ricoh GR IV really differs though, is with multiple exposure mode in-camera. It gives you a RAW that you can edit and of any current camera brand on the market, the only brand that does this is Panasonic. Canon used to do it, but that’s gone now.

At ISO 3200 and beyond, it’s best used in black and white mode and not worried about at all. The color falls apart very hard after this. Honestly, I could shoot with so many other cameras and get better images that I wouldn’t complain about at all.

So what was I expecting from the Ricoh GR IV? Well, I’ve reviewed nearly every single Ricoh GR camera out there. Here’s what I wanted:

A full-frame camera
The on-camera flash to come back
Weather resistance
Halation, because it’s awesome in Ricoh’s other cameras
An easier way to share presets and customizations. Nikon and Panasonic still do this the best and Canon does is really well too.
Better and more zone focusing options that can be fine tuned instead of set to preset distances

In 2025, it’s costly to make a mediocre camera. And here’s the thing, I know that the Ricoh fans will say that I don’t understand this camera. But if they only understood how many good cameras are already out there, then you’d realize that you don’t need this thing.

pics in the website provided

Alien objek kambing

No one knows how to explain this behaviour”.

It was not immediately clear if any of the cars were removed before it sank, and Zodiac Maritime did not immediately respond to messages Tuesday.

A salvage crew arrived days after the fire disabled the vehicle.

Two salvage tugs containing pollution control equipment will remain on scene to monitor for any signs of pollution or debris, the company said. The crew members of those two ships were not injured when the Morning Midas sank.

Zodiac Maritime said it is also sending another specialized pollution response vessel to the location as an added precaution.

The Coast Guard said it received a distress alert June 3 about a fire aboard the Morning Midas, which then was roughly 300 miles (490 kilometers) southwest of Adak Island.

There were 22 crew members onboard the Morning Midas. All evacuated to a lifeboat and were rescued by a nearby merchant marine vessel. There were no injuries.

Among the cars were about 70 fully electric and about 680 hybrid vehicles. A large plume of smoke was initially seen at the ship’s stern coming from the deck loaded with electric vehicles, the Coast Guard and Zodiac Maritime said at the time.

Adak is about 1,200 miles (1,930 kilometers) west of Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city.

The 600-foot (183-meter) Morning Midas was built in 2006 and sails under a Liberian flag. The car and truck carrier left Yantai, China, on May 26 en route to Mexico, according to the industry site marinetraffic.com.

A Dutch safety board in a recent report called for improving emergency response on North Sea shipping routes after a deadly 2023 fire aboard a freighter that was carrying 3,000 automobiles, including nearly 500 electric vehicles, from Germany to Singapore.

One person was killed and others injured in the fire, which burned out of control for a week. That ship was eventually towed to a Netherlands port for salvage.

Retailers including Boots and Shoe Zone cut their store numbers during the year.

Professor Joshua Bamfield, director of the Centre for Retail Research, said: “Whilst the results for 2024 show that although the outcomes for store closures overall were not as poor as in either 2020 or 2022, they are still disconcerting, with worse set to come in 2025.”

The Centre for Retail Research has said they expect store closures to rise to about 17,350 during 2025 with about 14,660 coming from independent retailers.

This is expected to be linked by a rise in national insurance contributions and the increase in the national minimum wage, which were announced in the October Budget and will be take effect in April.

Small retailers will also face a significant impact from changes to the current discount to business rates taxes for firms in the sector.

Commercial real estate firm Altus Group said the cut in the business rates discount from 75% to 40% in April announced at the 2024 autumn budget, will see the average shop’s rates bill spiral from £3,589 to £8,613 for 2025/26.

Alex Probyn, president of property tax at Altus, said it was “foolhardy” to scale back the targeted relief after a tough year for the sector.

He added: “Despite Labour’s manifesto recognition of the undue burden business rates place on our high streets, that burden will be significantly increased.”

There was some positive news on Thursday when the Co-op announced plans to open 75 new stores across the UK in 2025.

trump still got sentencing this month

Trump's criminal sentencing is in 'uncharted territory'
published at 07:46
07:46

Kayla Epstein
reporting from West Palm Beach, Florida

In May, Trump became the first former US president ever convicted of a crime, when a Manhattan jury found him guilty of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records.

Trump is scheduled to face sentencing later this month, where he could face up to four years in prison. As of writing, it's still on the calendar.

But now that he's president-elect, our legal system is in "truly uncharted territory", said Anna Cominsky, a professor at New York Law School.

"For now, nothing is stopping the NY sentencing from proceeding," Cominsky said. "That does not, of course, mean that it will not be indefinitely delayed."

Justice Juan Merchan finds himself in an incredibly difficult position. Though he has run Trump's criminal case by the book, he has acknowledged in rulings that he is dealing with no ordinary defendant.

Cominsky said she expected Trump's lawyers to file for a delay in the sentencing, and she would not be surprised if prosecutors joined them - and Justice Merchan granted the request.

And it was very unlikely Trump would actually face jail time, she said, given that he is set to run the country in about three months' time.

https://www.bbc.com/news/live/czxrnw5qrprt
