[WTA]Exhaust fan and Plaster ceiling

Hi all.

I'm planning to install an exhaust fan in my bathroom. There's a plaster ceiling installed in the bathroom.

When I went to the shop just now the seller recommend that I install the exhaust fan on the plaster ceiling. The exhaust gas will than be expelled into the space between the concrete slab and the plaster ceiling.

Is this okay? Will the wet air (normal from a bathroom) damage the plaster or the wiring and copper piping running between above the plaster ceiling?

Appreciate the advice.
Thank you.

Ceiling fan installation

Hi all. I'm doing some renovation to my apartment. I've installed a plaster ceiling around the unit and now I'm planning to fix 2 units of ceiling fans with lights in both the master bedroom and living room.

My contactor is planning to use a chain to to suspend the fan from the concrete slab and plaster ceiling. There will be a metal hook bolted to the slab with the chain suspended from it. Than the fan will hang from the other end.
However a friend suggested that I should use a metal pipe instead of a chain claiming it will be more secure (less swaying). I've checked in some lighting shop and they do sell this kind of set up.

Anyone have any experience with either one of these installations above? Which one is recommended? My plaster ceiling drops about 6" from the original concrete slab above.

Appreciate the advice.
Thanks.

[WTA] Instant Water Heaters

Hi all.

I'm looking into installing a water heater for my apartment. The developer has provided a outlet (direct from the main) to supply to the water heater. Initially I wanted to install the tank water heater as I was informed that using instant heater will restrict the water flow leading to less water volume at the shower head.
Is this true? Any type of instant heaters that can provide a high volume of water?

My contractor recommended BEEBEST to me. Any other brands that I should consider?

Thank you in advance

Lose weight and Tone UP!

Hi all. Recently I've sense the urge to lose weight due to my expanding waist line and the increasing figure on the weighing scale. I just started out last week but I'm not able to keep a consistent training schedule due to my job (working shifts). Here are some stats on my physique:

Sex : Male
Age : 25
Weight : 97 kg
Height : 163 cm
Body Fat% : 31.9%
BMI : 36.5

*Data was taken during a survey a few weeks back. Needless to say it kinda spurred me into action

I used to work out in the gym before but I stopped (no proper training schedule or plan). So I have the mass but I need to TONE it up.

TARGET
i. Weight : <85kg (before December 2009)
ii. Toned arm and chest muscles
iii. Get rid of my ONE PACK and replace with something less bulging (I don't really want the six pack, just the cut and tone)

Equipment : 2 sets of 10kg dumbells & a yoga mat

Constraints : I don't have time to jog (due to my working hours) and my meals are basically eat out (oily and unhealthy). Plus my eating hours aren't fixed depending on my working hours.

Training Program

Crunches (50 reps x 3 sets)
Reverse Crunches (10 reps x 3 sets) - I am still unable to feel the 'burn' when doing this exercise
Biceps Concentration Curls (20 reps x 3 sets) - I use 5kg weights (Tone NOT Bulk)
Biceps Hammer Curls (10 reps x 3 sets) - 5kg weights
Standing Overhead Triceps Extensions (15 reps x 3 sets) - 7kg
Triceps Kickbacks (12 reps x 3 sets) - 5kg
Pushups (10 reps x 3 sets)
Squats (15 reps x 3 sets) - For warm up

*Training is done every other day

Diet

I really need help here. I've been looking through the forum and its hard to find a combination that I can stick to (mainly due to work). Any advise here would be greatly appreciated. Basically my meals are as follows:

If I'm working Day Shift
Morning : Breakfast at the canteen (Bee Hun or Fried rice + 1 pc fried chicken)
Lunch : Mixed rice at the canteed
Dinner : Rarely eat dinner but if I do it would be a bun or a few slices of bread

If I'm working Night Shift
Morning : No breakfast
Lunch : Mixed rice at the stall
Dinner : Rice or Bee Hun (Tapau from stall)
Supper : Maggi (If I'm really hungry)

I think I need a better training program and an even better diet plan

Any feedback and comments are needed and highly appreciated.

Saga/Iswara Problem

Hi all!

I've got a problem with my car. Its a 2007 Proton Saga/Iswara (the one they discontinued after BLM). A few days a go I went to my mechanic complaining of a screeching sound from my left front brake. He told me that it was due to dust from the brake pads. I suggested to change to a pad which emits less dust but he informed me that it would decrease my braking power. (True?)

Anyway, he washed the disc with water and the sound went away. However while I was driving back just now, I heard a ringing sound coming from the front left side of my car. It sounded something like when you kick an empty metal tube (the hollow sound that comes from it). What could be causing this problem? Any ideas, suggestions?

I'll see if the sound still remains tomorrow and if it does guess I'll have to see the mechanic again.

Formatting a laptop with XP Original Installed

Hi all!

I need some technical help here. I've decided to format my laptop due to its current virus ridden, registry messed state. However I have one problem. When I bought the laptop, I installed an original copy of Windows XP on it. My question is, do I proceed in formatting the same way or is there a specific way to format a licence copy of windows? Do I re-enter the original CD key given? How will Microsoft validate that the copy of Windows is original when I'm installing it for the 2nd time?

Thanks in advance!

Monthly Savings

Hi all!!

I've got a few questions about how to keep or invest your monthly savings. I'll be starting work soon and I've made a prelimenary budget forecast on how much I can save monthly off my salary. It isnt much though as this is my first job. The conventional option would be to deposit my savings into a savings account and allow it to earn interest.

However a friend advised me to save/invest my montly savings in unit trust. Apparently if you invest a fixed amount over a period of time the value per unit would be averaged out. I'm rather skeptical on the matter and I was hoping some wiser could shed some light on the issue.

1. How would investing a fixed amount every month in my unit trust be better than saving in the bank?

2. Would it be safe to invest with the ups and downs of the market? My friend said that I could buy less units when the price is high and more when the price drops. If I planned to deposit a fixed amount every month end (eg. RM200) would it still work?

3. What would the return be like? Is there anyway I can estimate or calculate the return?

Thanks!

Laptop Temperature Problem

Hi there!

I've got a question about my laptop's cpu temperature and I'm not sure where to post or ask so I figured trying here.

I'm running an Acer Intel Core Duo 1.83GHz. I'm not sure what the 'correct' temperature for a laptop is but mine ranges from 75C (idle) to 88C (running war3). The shutdown temp is set at 95C and lately I've been experiencing shutdown quite frequent.

My laptop runs on a ATi mobility Radeon X1600. I'm not sure what is causing the problem because previously my laptop was running fine. (could run programs without it restarting) Now however, the tendency for it to restart is extremely high.

Any ideas? Could there be some malfunction with my cpu fan? Could a virus or a worm cause this?
Btw, I checked the cpu temperature using 'Notebook Hardware Control 2.0'.

Thanks in advance.

p/s. I've not overclocked my laptop in anyway. Its standard as it was the first day I bought it, 9 months ago.

Hi guys!

A little trivial help here please. Somehow or another my cd got stuck inside my dvd-burner. I'm running a laptop which has a slot-type optical drive. When ever I try ejecting it by pushing the eject button it won't come and windows will auto-run it.

Any advise on how I can manually remove the disc? Coz for tray type drives, there is a small hole to push a pin in to remove the disc.

Help please!!

Hi all!

I'm in the process of buying a laptop. I've norrowed down the choices to 2 models which are:

1. Compaq Presario V3012
2. Asus A8J

As far as my non-technical self can tell, the notable difference between the 2 models are the processor speed (Compaq: 1.83GHz, 667MHz and Asus: 1.73GHz, 533Mhz) and the fact that the Asus model has an Nvidia 7300 graphic card.

However I do fancy the sleek design of Compaq.

I need the laptop for work, movies and music, and the odd game once in a while. Plus I want it to be mobile and the tech support needs to be good (covered in Sabah).
Which of the 2 models are reccomended?
Would it be advisable to purchase the laptop during the upcoming PC Fair in PWTC?

Thanks for your time!
