Too many universities, Low quality of lecturers, Administration of University,

Now Malaysian Degrees are equivalent to that of Philippines, Indonesia, ETC ( Not worth the Paper it is written on ).

So DON'T waste your children time by studying in Malaysia ( Provided you can afford to study overseas )

OPPS :- Did not know how to allow multiple choice.....

Malaysia wants state companies to repatriate forei

Malaysia wants state companies to repatriate foreign earnings

CK TAN, Nikkei staff writer

KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysia wants its state-owned funds and related companies to repatriate some earnings from the more than 500 billion ringgit ($115 billion) worth of investments they have made abroad. The government sees this as one way to help stem the decline of the nation's currency, which has weakened by 26.3% against the dollar over the past year, and shore up the flagging economy.

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak announces measures aimed at buttressing the economy at a news conference in Putrajaya on Sept. 14.	© Reuters
Prime Minister Najib Razak, in a live TV broadcast Monday, unveiled several "short- and mid-term proactive" measures for grappling with the plunging ringgit and an outflow of foreign capital from the equity market. Underscoring the gravity of the situation, state-owned investment funds, as well as blue-chip companies whose shares are majority-owned by public institutions, are being urged to bring home a portion of their overseas assets and invest locally instead.

Malaysian companies had some 522 billion ringgit invested abroad as of the end of June, less than the 477 billion ringgit the country received in foreign direct investment, Najib revealed. Although the prime minister did not provide details, it is safe to assume that some of these overseas investments were made by state-owned oil and gas company Petronas, and companies that have grown under state investment fund Khazanah Nasional.

Notable businesses under Khazanah include CIMB Group, a leading lender that derives about 40% of its revenue outside Malaysia; Axiata Group, a telecommunications company with substantial market shares in the region; and Tenaga Nasional, the state power company, which is involved in electricity and water supply projects in Saudi Arabia.

Heeding the government's calls to support the economy, Khazanah Nasional said Monday that it has set aside 6.77 billion ringgit to "accelerate and increase domestic investments." Among the planned projects is a 4.5 billion ringgit resort development in Desaru, in the southern state of Johor, which borders Singapore. IHH Healthcare, an operator of upscale hospitals that is part of the state fund, will spend 670 million ringgit on new and existing hospitals locally over the next two years.

Meanwhile, the government will also pump an additional 20 billion ringgit into ValueCap, a state-owned fund established in 2002 to "support undervalued shares and stabilize the equity market." The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index has declined 14% from a year ago, affected by poor trading sentiment caused by both local and external factors. Foreign funds continue their flight from the country; at the end of August, the year-to-date outflow was nearly 16 billion ringgit, according to BIMB Securities Research. All the hot money that entered the Malaysian stock market since 2011 has left the country, based on the brokerage's calculations.

In a bid to sustain gross domestic product growth, which slowed from 5.6% in the first quarter to 4.9% in the second, Malaysia will abolish import duties on at least 90 items, such as spare parts and research equipment used by small and midsize manufacturers. Tourists from China will also be eligible for visa exemptions starting Oct. 1, for a limited period of time.

The benchmark stock index on Monday closed at 1639.63, up 2.24% from Friday. The ringgit, however, weakened to 4.3 to the dollar, from 4.28.

...............................................................

Signs that Malaysian Government is GETTING DESPERATE.

BERSIH 4 ....... PAS NOT SUPPORTING . Why ?

BERSIH 4 with over 60,000 supporters present.

PAS which just had a tiff with DAP and PRK would NOT support the BERSIH Rally.

PAS has NOTHING to GAIN from it. And would UPSET the Status Quo in Kelantan , Kedah, Perlis and Terrengganu.

As for Malays NOT attending the BERSIH 4 rally. Maybe these factors controbuted to the LOW turn out.

a) Long Holiday (Friday till Tuesday )

b) Government/Police/Etc using FEAR tactic of Illegal assemble and Arrest/Troubles/Mayhem/ etc

c) NO Support from PAS ( See above )

...................................................

Many of the Chinese stayed within KL and Klang Valley. So their homes are within travelling distance to the BERSIH 4 Rally.

No need to balik KAMPONG !!!!!

NOTE :- UMNO are PLAYING the RACE card . Saying the RALLY was support from Non-Bumi only . How about the 20 % Malays who was there ??
Ringgit slumps to lowest levels in 17 years

Source : Bangkok Post , 13 August 2015

KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia’s ringgit plunged beyond four to the dollar for the first time since 1998 as investors flee the nation’s assets amid a slowing economy and controversy over finances linked to Prime Minister Najib Razak.

China’s surprise devaluation of the yuan lumped more pressure on the ringgit, Asia’s worst-performing currency in the past 12 months.

Vietnam widened the dong’s trading band on Wednesday, adding to speculation policy makers will reignite a currency war to weaken exchange rates and revive faltering exports.

Brent crude has more than halved from a 2014 peak, hurting revenue for oil-exporting Malaysia.

The ringgit tumbled 1.9% to 4.0365 a dollar as of 1.38pm in Kuala Lumpur in its biggest loss since 1998, according to prices from local banks compiled by Bloomberg. It fell to a low of 4.0375.

Malaysia’s benchmark stock index headed for its lowest close since February 2013 and the 10-year government bond yield rose to a seven-month high.

“China’s yuan move is recalibrating Asian currencies,” said Vishnu Varathan, a Singapore-based economist at Mizuho Bank Ltd. “If the yuan drops another 5% to 10%, then 4.20 for the ringgit isn’t far-fetched.”

Najib has come under the spotlight over a 2.6-billion-ringgit ($645-million) donation deposited into his personal bank accounts and which was initially linked to debt-ridden state investment company 1Malaysia Development Bhd. The ringgit has dropped 21% in the past year and slumped to a record 4.8850 per dollar during the 1997-98 Asian financial crisis, when former Premier Mahathir Mohamad imposed capital controls and pegged the currency at 3.8.

GDP report

A government report on Thursday may show Malaysia’s second-quarter economic growth slowed to 4.5% from 5.6% in the previous three months, according to the median estimate in a Bloomberg survey. That would be the slowest pace since early 2013. Exports dropped in four of the first six months of 2015 and shipments from China, the Southeast Asian nation’s biggest market, contracted in July for a fifth month this year.

Global funds have pulled about $3 billion from the country’s equities in 2015, the most since 2008, just as a US interest-rate increase looms. The FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI Index has lost more than 13% from this year’s high in April. Overseas investors cut holdings of Malaysian government and corporate debt to the lowest in three years in July.

Foreign-exchange reserves dropped below $100 billion last month for the first time since 2010 to $96.7 billion. The central bank will continue to “smoothen out excessive volatility,” Julia Goh, an analyst at Singapore’s United Overseas Bank Ltd., wrote in a research note on Tuesday.

The monetary authority has spent $25 billion defending the currency since July 2014, after adjusting for valuation effects, Philip McNicholas, a Singapore-based economist at BNP Paribas SA, wrote in a July 24 report.

Volatility surge

One-month implied volatility for the ringgit, a measure of expected exchange-rate swings used to price options, is the highest in Asia at 13.5%. Twelve-month non-deliverable forwards sank 1.4% to 4.2337 on Wednesday.

As Malaysian bonds declined, the cost to insure sovereign debt for five years using credit-default swaps climbed to 167, the highest since 2011, CMA prices show. The 10-year yield rose six basis points to 4.25%.

“The lower oil price and devalued yuan should be negative for the ringgit,” said Masashi Murata, vice-president at Brown Brothers Harriman & Co in Tokyo. “A weaker ringgit is negative for Malaysian domestic demand as it boosts inflation expectations and money outflow.”

It currently has 13 members - eight from BN and five from the opposition parties.

The appointments have been criticised by analysts and opposition leaders who see the four appointments as a tactic employed by PM Najib to delay the probe into the 1MDB scandal.

The Prime Minister had also unexpectedly terminated the services of Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail, who was one of the four chiefs in a separate task force investigating 1MDB.

Said Mr Nur Jazlan in a short statement yesterday: "All (PAC) proceedings that had been arranged for August, including 1MDB, will be halted until the new PAC line-up is announced at the next Lower House (Parliament) sitting."

Parliament will next sit in October - more than two months away.

Deputy Parliament Speaker Ronald Kiandee said the House's Standing Order 77(4) reads that "no members may be appointed or nominated to or act as a chairman or a member while he is a minister".

The Deputy Speaker said when contacted: "Our tradition is the respective parties will recommend the members of the replacement to the Committee of Selection."

THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK

Source :- http://www.straitstimes.com/asia/se-asia/r...tees-1mdb-probe

.................................................................

Malaysian PM axes deputy, attorney general amid fu

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, stung by allegations that he received some $700 million in government money, on Tuesday fired the attorney general who had been investigating him and a deputy who has been among his most prominent critics.

Najib is under increasing pressure over leaked confidential documents that allegedly show the money, from state investment fund 1MDB, went into his personal accounts.

Najib announced over national television that his deputy Muhyiddin Yassin will be replaced by Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, a Cabinet member who will also retain his home minister portfolio. Earlier Tuesday, the government announced it had terminated the services of Attorney General Abdul Gani Patail.

Najib said he also dropped four other ministers to strengthen his administration and ensure they can "work as a team."

"I can accept differences in opinion and criticisms as part of the decision-making process, but these differences in opinion should not be made in an open forum that can affect public perception of the government and the country," he said.

Critics slammed Gani's abrupt removal and cast it as an attempt by Najib to avoid prosecution.

"The purge commences. The Attorney-General is replaced. Any flicker of hope that the prime minister might be charged for misdeeds is extinguished," opposition lawmaker Tony Pua tweeted.

"The fact that he is not answering the allegations but instead removed his critics is not a good sign," said Wan Saiful Wan Jan, who heads the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs think tank. "It shows deep desperation on Najib's side."

Muhyiddin, the deputy, has been critical of the government's handling of 1MDB's massive debt and on Sunday night repeated his call for Najib to explain the alleged funds transfer.

Najib said, "The decision to replace Muhyiddin was a very difficult one, but I had to do it so that a strong team can move forward."

Gani was replaced by a Federal Court judge, Mohamed Apandi Ali, months before the attorney general had been due to retire in October. The government said Gani was leaving for health reasons, but when contacted by Malay Mail Online, Gani said he had not been aware of the decision.

View galleryMalaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak speaks during …
Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak speaks during a press conference at the prime minister's of …
Gani confirmed earlier this month that he had received documents from investigators that linked Najib and 1MDB. The existence of the documents, which allegedly show $700 million was wired from entities linked to 1MDB into Najib's accounts, were first reported by The Wall Street Journal.

Najib has not disputed the existence of the accounts or the receipt of the funds. He has only said that he has never used government funds for personal gain, and called the allegations a political sabotage. Officials with 1MDB also have denied wrongdoing.

The documents sent to the attorney general pave the way for possible criminal charges, which would be a first for a Malaysian prime minister.

Muyhiddin later Tuesday said he accepted Najib's decision but will not waver on his stand in the 1MDB saga. He said in a statement on Facebook that he will remain as deputy president in the ruling party and will strive to restore confidence in it.

Apart from Muhyiddin, Najib also dropped Shafie Apdal as rural development minister. Shafie, a vice president in Najib's Malay party, has also been critical of the government's handling of the 1MDB saga. On Tuesday Shafie also defended his comments, saying in a statement that they were aimed at strengthening the party and putting the country on the right track.

Najib's National Front coalition has been in power since independence from Britain in 1957. However, support for the coalition has eroded in the last two general elections. In 2013, it won the polls but lost the popular vote for the first time.

.............................................................

Source :- http://finance.yahoo.com/news/malaysian-pm...-062220502.html

..............................................................

Malaysia FAMOUS Again for the WRONG Reason !!!

Thailand . Bangkok Post . Malaysian Dressing Code

Malaysia's 'fashion police' getting under women's skin

Source :- Bangkok Post ; 21st July 2015 ( Web :- http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/asean/6296...der-women-skin)

KUALA LUMPUR — Women in Malaysia, long seen as a moderate Islamic nation, are being denied entry to government buildings on the grounds their skirts were too revealing and their shoulders too bare, fanning fears of growing conservatism in a country with large non-Muslim minorities.

Prime Minister Najib Razak's reluctance to intervene on the sudden enforcement of a dress code, analysts say, shows the liberal-minded leader is unwilling to stand up to conservatives at a time when he is battling allegations of corruption.

Ethnic sensitivities can often trigger dispute in Malaysia, particularly as none of those criticised for their clothes was from the Muslim Malay community that forms two-thirds of a population of about 30 million. Ethnic Chinese number 25%, and Indians about 7%.

The dress code, which bars revealing clothes for women in government buildings, had not been strictly followed, so the tougher enforcement over garments seen as showing too much leg came as a shock to many Malaysians.

The incidents went viral on social media, with activists saying they highlighted an expansion of powers for minor officials, who can now judge, and correct, women's attire.

"They're not paid to be fashion police," said rights activist Marina Mahathir, the daughter of former prime minister Mahathir Mohamed.

"Because we don't hear someone at the top saying, 'This is wrong,' that's taken as condoning these actions and a licence for them to do that."

A woman walks past a sign with information about a dress code outside a government building in Kuala Lumpur July 15. Women in Malaysia, long seen as a moderate Islamic nation, have been denied entry to government buildings on the grounds their skirts were too revealing. (Reuters photo)
Mr Mahathir himself had objected to similar measures imposed by officials during his 22-year tenure, she added. The most recent incidents showed that Malaysia was regressing and "acting like Saudi Arabia", the former prime minister has said.

In June, the leotard worn by a national gymnast also provoked outcry as being too provocative.

Malay women began adopting conservative styles of dress in the 1970s, reflecting a growing politicisation of religion in the Islamic world. Many now wear the headscarf that in earlier decades had been worn mostly in conservative backwaters.

Political analysts and activists have long accused parties such as Mr Najib's United Malays National Organisation, which leads the ruling coalition, of using religion to shore up voter support.

"Leaders are afraid if their religiosity is questioned, that they may anger, or lose voters," said Ivy Josiah, an adviser to the Women's Aid Organisation.

UMNO, which suffered its worst electoral result in 2013, relies on support from ethnic majority Malays, who are mostly conservative, particularly in rural areas

It now faces scrutiny over Mr Najib's role in debt-laden state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), although a government report cleared its accounts of suspicion.

Mr Najib recently said Islam's holy book, the Koran, would be the guide for all government policies and actions. The constitution enshrines Islam as Malaysia's religion, but allows the practice of other faiths.

"Whenever supporters raise conservative issues, Najib has always kept quiet," said political analyst Wan Saiful Wan Jan, of the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs. "He may be progressive, but he has failed to convince his party and government to follow him."

Short skirts and bare shoulders are being used as grounds to bar women from government buildings in Malaysia, fanning fears of growing conservatism in a country with large non-Muslim minorities. (EPA photo)
The prime minister's office did not respond to a request for comment.

'Embarrassment'

Religious scholars saw the stricter enforcement of the dress code as a mark of respect to Muslims, particularly during the just-concluded month of Ramadan, when fasting in daylight hours brings religious merit, according to scripture.

"If a Muslim who is fasting sees a woman's aurat then it'll just erase their benefits," said Harussani Zakaria, a cleric in the northern state of Perak, referring to the parts of the body that Muslim scriptures say must be covered.

Some of the women objected to the criticism they faced.

"To me, it was an embarrassment," said C. Premananthi, a 32-year-old reporter who was barred from entering a government building, but who refused to wear a sarong security officials offered her instead.

Activists say the availability of such sarongs handed to the women is evidence of a wider, quiet movement towards greater conservatism encouraged by the authorities.

"Somebody had to purchase it and give it to the security guards," said Marina, adding, "It points to some form of regulation."

.........................................................................................

However, he arrived in January to find all the computers and records had been wiped – so who passed this false material?

Investigators into the Malaysian development fund 1MDB’s 2009 joint venture with the company PetroSaudi International have concluded that the partnership lied to its banks and Bank Negara Malaysia by confirming that the company Good Star Limited was a 100% subsidiary.

In fact Good Star Limited is a third party concern, controlled by the businessman friend of the Prime Minister, Jho Low, whom we have shown was secretly directing the fund’s investment decisions.

It leads to possible charges of “cheating”, write the investigators in a document in our possession.

A “possible offence by [1MDB]” , according to the document, includes:

“Cheating Bank 2 [sic] by stating that the account in RBS Coutts Bank belongs to 1MDB PetroSaudi’s parent company[PetroSaudi International]”
On a separate occasion the investigators conclude that during the transfer of an alleged USD$700 million ‘loan repayment’ to PetroSaudi 1MDB stood culpable of the “possible offence” of:

“Cheating Bank 1 [sic] by confirming that Good Star is 100% owned by 1MDB PetroSaudi”.
The papers in Sarawak Report’s possession show that the investigators have identified at least three separate occasions on which these and other transgressions were made, which appear worthy of prosecution.

Money was not used for intended purposes in violation of FEA rules
In particular, the investigators concluded that money passed into the joint venture was:

“not used for the intended purposes under Foreign Exchange Administration (FEA) if 1MDB PetroSaudi cannot show that the money was transferred from Good Star to the joint venture”.
In fact, subsequent documentary information passed to Sarawak Report shows that over USD$500 million was passed from Good Star to an account at the Swiss Bank BSI in Singapore, which was beneficially owned by Jho Low.

Today it has been further reported that Mr Low bought two penthouses in the City State of a combined value of RM154 million, just one of several examples of his conspicuous spending across the globe.

In a related line of enquiry the investigators examined the evidence that USD$260 million from a separate loan of USD$500 million, supposedly made also to the joint venture, was then diverted to buy out the Taib family’s UBG bank.

“We are investigating whether the money (USD$260 mil) was used to buy UBG shares through Javace Sdn Bhd. If it is true [1MDB] is in breach of FEA rules and possible cheating to Bank Negara Malaysia”, says the report, because this was clearly not the stated purpose for borrowing and then lending the money.
Why did the banks fail to report suspicious transaction reports?
Zurich branch of RBS Coutts under scrutiny - how come it did not file a suspicious transaction report on Good Star and did it check the beneficial owner of the account?
Zurich branch of RBS Coutts under scrutiny – how come it did not file a suspicious transaction report on Good Star and did it check the beneficial owner of the account?

While the investigators largely appear to exonerate the banks involved in these transactions, including 1MDB’s bank Deutsche Bank, on the basis that it appears they were misled by 1MDB’s managers, they nevertheless query the banks’ failure to flag up suspicious transactions.

The banks were clearly transferring huge sums of money under highly unusual circumstances, which ought to have triggered a number of reports to the authorities.

Analysing 1MDB’s final transfer of $330 million in four cash tranches to Good Star in 2011, the investigators note that two banks committed possible offences for failing to report a number of transfers including $110 million and $125 million as possible suspicious transactions.

Their “Examination finding” on this matter includes:

“Possible offence by Bank 1 for non-reporting of USD$110 million transaction”.
“Possible breach by Bank 2 of AMLA [Anti Money Laundering Act] for not submitting Suspicious Transaction Report on 1MDB PetroSaudi”
The report adds that it is

“confirmed that banks are required to report the ultimate beneficiary (i.e. 1MDB PetroSaudi) in International Transfer Information System report not any of the intermediaries”. This leaves the banks in “possible breach of the AMLA for not submitting Suspicious Transaction Report (STR) on 1MDB PetroSaudi“, says the report.
Action by the regulators
Malaysia’s regulators have decided in the light of these investigations to approach the Swiss authorities in order to confirm that the money did indeed arrive in the Good Star account in RBS Coutts Zurich.

They are also looking for confirmation that the beneficial owner of that account was Jho Low.

If so, the British bank RBS Coutts stands equally exposed for failing to report a series of obviously suspicious transactions after receiving payments of $700 million; $160 million and $330 million between 2009-2011 into an account that had nothing to do with 1MDB.

False document

Swiss Bank BSI facing tough questions

The papers also throw up a second accusation of possible falsification of documents by 1MDB.

Last week Sarawak Report revealed that the Singapore authorities had reported that an alleged bank statement submitted by 1MDB, in order to substantiate evidence about the contents of the fund’s BSI account, was in fact false according to the bank itself.

The bank denied the statement, presented to the authorities by 1MDB CEO Arul Kanda Kandasamy, was an authentic document or that it represented a true picture of the Brazen Sky account, which the PM/ Finance Minister has announced is holding USD$1.103 of the fund’s missing money.

Now the Malaysian investigators accuse 1MDB likewise of:

“making a false document (a letter to BNM [Bank Negara Malaysia]) and submitted to Bank ‘2’. This is to make Bank 2 believe that BNM was informed that [the] funds are to be remitted to the joint venture’s parent account”
The funds concerned were the USD$330 million, which passed into Good Star under the guise of providing a loan to PetroSaudi and the above statement makes clear that 1MDB had shown a false copy of a letter supposedly sent to Bank Negara to its lender bank.

In fact, it is implied that no actual letter had been submitted to Bank Negara on the matter, thereby deceiving the bank involved in the transaction.

Nothing but “wild accusations” said the PM last night. So why has 1MDB refused to comment on the evidence presented so far?

It is plain from the papers submitted by the investigators that they have recommended that the Finance Minister should authorise an approach the Swiss authorities to confirm if Good Star received the various funds and to confirm if Jho Low is the beneficial owner of the company.

They also wish to pursue the matter of:

“possible cheating and making false documents by 1MDB against Bank Negara Malaysia” and against two other banks, one of which is believed to be 1MDB’s bank, Deutsche Bank.
The investigators further wish the relevant banks to be questioned over their failures to submit suspicious transaction reports “with a view of compounding the offences if the explanations are not satisfactory”

Action or Inaction?

Yet, despite these investigations and recommendations by the authorities both within Malaysia and Singapore, the Finance Minister cum Prime Minister last night dismissed the entire series of documented revelations about 1MDB as “wild allegations”:

“”As a transparent government, I as the prime minister and the head of the leadership, with the honourable deputy prime minister and supported by the minister as wells as members of the administration, would never for a moment budge or surrender.
“Instead, we would remain steadfast and continue our struggle, charting a million new paths for the people and nation”, the Prime Minister declared in a speech designed to shore up his position against growing concerns about 1MDB’s missing billions.
In which case will he release these documents and authorise charges to be made against the transgressors identified by Malaysia’s own investigators?

Source :- http://www.sarawakreport.org/2015/04/inves...hers-exclusive/

Malaysian PM slammed for failing to face critics o

Malaysian PM slammed for failing to face critics on scandal
5 Jun 2015 at 15:45 292 viewed0 comments
WRITER: AFP
KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia's embattled prime minister provoked fierce criticism on Friday by not attending an event at which he was to defend himself over an escalating scandal threatening to engulf his administration.

Malaysia's Prime Minister Najib Razak speaks during a press conference in Kuala Lumpur, on May 11, 2015
Prime Minister Najib Razak had been expected to use the public forum to hit back at critics of a state-owned development company he launched that is reeling under billions of dollars of debt and accusations of fraud.

But after 89-year-old former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad -- the chief voice pushing for Najib's ouster over the affair -- showed up to speak at the event, police ordered it shut down, citing unspecified "public order and national harmony" concerns.

Political opponents and Malaysia's active social-media scene accused Najib of engineering the cancellation to avoid facing his main accuser in public.

"He lost an opportunity to win over support for himself, to explain everything... that no money is missing," Mahathir was quoted saying by The Malaysian Insider news portal.

Najib launched the company, 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), in 2009 and, as concurrent finance minister, is responsible for its operations.

But it is reeling under an estimated $11 billion debt, which has weighed on the ringgit currency and sparked fears for the country's sovereign credit rating.

Reports this year also have alleged that possibly billions of dollars have gone missing through mismanagement and murky overseas transactions.

Najib and 1MDB have denied wrongdoing, saying the company is on solid footing.

But both opposition and ruling party critics have accused 1MDB of providing incomplete and shifting explanations.

Najib's office blamed his no-show on the security warning from his national police chief.

But critics mocked that, noting that the event was held at Najib's own ruling-party headquarters.

"Najib has only himself and the (police chief) to blame if even more Malaysians are now convinced that the prime minister has a lot to hide," said leading opposition parliamentarian Lim Kit Siang.

In February, the New York Times published a lengthy expose detailing multi-million-dollar purchases of luxury US real estate by a close Najib family associate, financier Low Taek Jho, whom various reports also have linked to 1MDB's dealings.

Low has denied involvement.

Najib clung to power in 2013 polls, but lost the popular vote to an opposition that promised to end endemic corruption and oppression under the long-ruling Barisan Nasional (National Front) coalition.

Mahathir, who governed with a tight fist from 1981 until his 2003 retirement, has said the coalition will suffer a historic loss of power unless Najib is replaced.

Crony capitalism and abuse of democratic rights was rife under Mahathir, but he remains influential, and Malaysians have watched his anti-Najib campaign with fascination.

Under pressure, Najib earlier this year ordered his auditor-general to examine 1MDB's books. Its report has not yet been released.

Critics including Mahathir have called for criminal investigations, but little has been done by Najib's regime.

Malaysia's central bank on Wednesday, however, said it had launched an investigation into whether 1MDB had broken any rules on offshore borrowing and investments.
