Li Ka-shing's bitcoin play is worth emulating, says top economist

Investors looking for a way to make money from the global bitcoin bonanza should steer clear of the pseudo currency itself and instead follow Li Ka-shing's lead: buy in to the firms providing the services that bitcoin holders use.

That's according to John Greenwood, the London-based chief economist of Invesco who designed Hong Kong's pegged currency regime.

"Just like investors in days gone by made more money out of selling shovels and picks to gold-diggers than anyone ever made out of the gold mine, he is investing in the peripheral activity that bitcoin has generated," Greenwood said.

Asia's richest man, Li Ka-shing has invested in BitPay, the digital currency equivalent of PayPal, through his venture capital company, Horizons Ventures.

A spokeswoman for Horizons Ventures said the group would not comment on the details of the investment.

BitPay said it was "fortunate to have the benefit of many supportive investors, including Horizons Ventures".

BitPay, founded in May 2011, handles transactions for 14,000 companies across 200 countries. About half are in the United States, with 25 per cent in Europe and 25 per cent in the rest of the world.

The news capped a day of confusion and setbacks on Capitol Hill that left Congress back where it had started. The ratings agency Fitch put the US on notice of a downgrade in its triple-A status, warning that the turmoil in Washington "risks undermining confidence in the role of the US dollar as the pre-eminent global reserve currency”.

The White House seized on that announcement, saying it demonstrated the urgency of reaching a deal. But momentum had all but evaporated on Tuesday night when Republican leaders, realising that support for their proposed legislation had collapsed, gathered in Boehner’s office for crisis talks over pizza.

Congressman Pete Sessions, who chairs the rules committee, emerged briefly to tell reporters that the leadership’s bill had stalled. “There will be no action tonight, no votes,” he said. “What we’re going to do is allow us to take the night and make sure all our members know what is going on.” He was unable to elaborate on what was, in his words, “going on”.

Late on Tuesday night focus returned to the Senate, where Harry Reid, the Democrats’ majority leader, revived talks with his Republican counterpart, Mitch McConnell.

The day had begun with a hope that these negotiations could provide the basis of a breakthrough. Their deal was a stopgap measure that would have extended the debt limit until early February and authorised government spending until mid-January, with one token concession over the Affordable Care Act, the healthcare reforms passed by both houses of Congress in 2010 that hardline Republicans are now attempting to unpick.

But in the face of trenchant opposition from Tea Party Republicans, voiced at a meeting of the House caucus in the morning, Boehner floated an alternative proposal that would have, in addition, delayed a new tax on medical devices designed to help pay for the Affordable Care Act and deprive lawmakers and their staff of personal health insurance subsidies.

That succeeded only in inflaming conservatives who regarded the House and Senate compromises as surrender – and Democrats, who accused Boehner of scuppering progress by inserting new "ransom demands".

The Republican leadership came up with various versions of the legislation through the day as they tried to settle on a formula that would satisfy conservatives. Boehner acceded to rightwing demands to drop the medical device tax provision, which was seen as benefiting only health equipment manufacturers, and retained the proposal to cut healthcare subsidies from congressional and White House staff, which amounted to an $18,000-a-year pay cut for most employees. The resolution got as far as being published on the House rules committee website.

But the plan collapsed in the face of sustained conservative opposition. Heritage Action, a conservative group that holds Republican candidates accountable to Tea Party-backed causes, announced that it would mark down Republicans who voted in favour of the resolution. Support from House Republicans melted away and Boehner postponed the vote.

By then, senior Democrats had lined up to condemn the Republicans in the House for blocking what appeared to be route forward. “The president has said repeatedly that members of Congress don't get to demand ransom for fulfilling their basic responsibilities to pass a budget and pay the nation's bills,” said White House spokeswoman Amy Brundage.

"Democrats and Republicans in the Senate have been working in a bipartisan, good-faith effort to end the manufactured crises that have already harmed American families and business owners."

Chuck Schumer, the third-ranking Democrat in the Senate, looked angry after he emerged from a Senate meeting to discover that the bipartisan deal, which he had helped forge, had been put on ice while Boehner sought an alternative solution among Republicans in the House. "We're at the 11th hour,” he said. "The train to avoid default was smoothly heading down the tracks and picking up speed, and at the last minute speaker Boehner decides to throw a log on those tracks."

In the end Congress finished the day where it began. Hopes were again invested in the ability of Reid and McConnell, two experienced negotiators, to find a resolution. Aides for both the Senate leaders indicated they were working into the night to forge a deal capable of garnering agreement that might just get the necessary support ahead of Thursday.

The significance of Thursday's deadline has been somewhat misunderstood; the precise implications of failing to raise the borrowing limit before then are unknown. The treasury secretary Jack Lew has said the country’s ability to borrow will be exhausted “no later” than 17 October, which in practice means it will have to rely upon its cash reserves, and incoming revenues, from 5pm on Thursday onwards.

That will not necessarily mean an immediate default; instead there would be uncertainty, growing by the hour, over the Treasury’s ability to pay creditors. Technically, if no deal was reached, US would be susceptible to a default from 18 October onwards.

Shai Akabas, a senior policy analyst who has analysed the possible ramifications for the Bipartisan Policy Center, said there was no clarity on what would happen next – although he estimated that the Treasury may start failing to pay bills from 22 October.

But Thursday could still be the crucial moment determining the response of markets, which until now have tolerated the chaos in Washington on the assumption it would be resolved in time.

With the US 16 days into a government shutdown, and just 24 hours away from the point at which the Treasury no longer has authority to borrow, there were signs economists were running out of faith.

Fitch said it had reached its conclusion because of the increased possibility that the US would not reach a deal on its debt ceiling before Thursday. "Although Fitch continues to believe that the debt ceiling will be raised soon, the political brinkmanship and reduced financing flexibility could increase the risk of a US default," the agency said.

The Dow fell 133.25 points or 0.87% to end the day down after a brief rally when it appeared a breakthrough had been made.

In 2011 Standard & Poor's downgraded US debt as Democrats and Republicans argued once more about the debt ceiling. The move came amid sharp selloffs on stock markets around the world. "The repeated brinkmanship over raising the debt ceiling also dents confidence in the effectiveness of the US government and political institutions, and in the coherence and credibility of economic policy. It will also have some detrimental effect on the US economy," said Fitch.

The atomic bombings of the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan were conducted by the United States during the final stages of World War II in 1945. The two events are the only use of nuclear weapons in war to date.

Following a firebombing campaign that destroyed many Japanese cities, the Allies prepared for a costly invasion of Japan. The war in Europe ended when Nazi Germany signed its instrument of surrender on 8 May, but the Pacific War continued. Together with the United Kingdom and the Republic of China, the United States called for a surrender of Japan in the Potsdam Declaration on 26 July 1945, threatening Japan with "prompt and utter destruction". The Japanese government ignored this ultimatum. American airmen dropped Little Boy on the city of Hiroshima on 6 August 1945, followed by Fat Man over Nagasaki on 9 August.

Within the first two to four months of the bombings, the acute effects killed 90,000–166,000 people in Hiroshima and 60,000–80,000 in Nagasaki, with roughly half of the deaths in each city occurring on the first day. The Hiroshima prefecture health department estimated that, of the people who died on the day of the explosion, 60% died from flash or flame burns, 30% from falling debris and 10% from other causes. During the following months, large numbers died from the effect of burns, radiation sickness, and other injuries, compounded by illness. In a US estimate of the total immediate and short term cause of death, 15–20% died from radiation sickness, 20–30% from burns, and 50–60% from other injuries, compounded by illness. In both cities, most of the dead were civilians, although Hiroshima had a sizeable garrison.

On 15 August, six days after the bombing of Nagasaki, Japan announced its surrender to the Allies, signing the Instrument of Surrender on 2 September, officially ending World War II. The bombings led, in part, to post-war Japan's adopting Three Non-Nuclear Principles, forbidding the nation from nuclear armament. The bombings' role in Japan's surrender and their ethical justification are still debated.

Women who work night shifts at greater risk of miscarriage, study finds

WOMEN who work night shifts are at greater risk of suffering miscarriages than those who work regular office hours, according to new research.

The study, led by Dr Linden Stocker and Dr Ying Cheong, also shows those who work alternate and changing shifts - not just nights - are more likely to take longer to conceive a child and suffer from menstrual disruption.

The team, based at Southampton's Princess Anne Hospital, assessed the impact of non-standard working schedules, which included night and mixed shifts, on the reproductive outcomes of 119,345 women.

They found almost a third of women (29 per cent) who worked night shifts only had an increased rate of miscarriage, while a similar number (22 per cent) who worked alternate or changing shifts suffered menstrual disruption, which can cause fertility problems.

Additionally, shift workers had an 80 per cent increased rate of subfertility, the term used to describe prolonged inability to conceive.

"Many women work, and we already know that working shifts is a risk factor for health and social wellbeing as shift workers adopt poor sleep hygiene, suffer sleep deprivation and develop activity levels that are desynchronised from their daily routine," Dr Stocker said.

"But the adverse health impacts of shift work in early reproductive function is a new, additional finding and it provides strong initial evidence that women who are trying to conceive would benefit from assessing their work patterns."

Dr Cheong, clinical director of the Princess Anne Hospital's Complete Fertility Centre Southampton and a senior lecturer at the University of Southampton, said the findings may have implications for women attempting to become pregnant as well as employers.

"But women will want to know how they can enhance their reproductive potential, not just decrease their risk of fertility problems, so we are now looking to discover the medical explanation for this in order to improve outcomes."

The study was presented at the annual conference of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology.

Prior to this, Teng was reported saying he was willing to have a face-off with Lim in the elections on condition that the Barisan leader gets to pick the state seat.

GEORGE TOWN, April 2 — Unless it is for the Air Putih constituency, there will be no showdown between state Barisan Nasional (BN) chief Teng Chang Yeow and Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng in Election 2013.

Lim told reporters today that he would be defending his Air Putih state seat after Teng insisted on deciding the battleground for his challenge against the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) chief minister.

The DAP leader had last week accepted Teng’s challenge for a face-off and in turn challenged the Penang BN chairman to contest the Padang Kota seat.

Padang Kota was Teng’s former constituency, where he had been the state assemblymen for three terms before losing the seat to Penang DAP chairman Chow Kon Yeow in 2008 by a 1,661-vote majority.

But Teng insisted yesterday that he should have the right to decide which state seat he will challenge Lim in as part of his plan to unseat the chief minister.

Today, Lim said he would go back to his original plan of defending his Air Putih state seat and Bagan parliamentary seat.

“I was wrong in thinking Teng is different from Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon (the former Penang chief minister),” he told a press conference at his office here.

“In fact, he is worse than Koh because Koh dared to recontest his state seat while Teng dared not go back to his old seat,” Lim said, adding that he did not want to waste time on this “challenge” anymore.

The DAP secretary-general had earlier agreed to one of Teng’s conditions that he drop his parliamentary seat and only contest for a state seat against Teng.

“I must confess that I have been deceived by Teng in his political game challenging me to contest against him,” Lim said today.

He accused Teng of not wanting to honour his challenge to him despite him (Lim) agreeing to one of Teng’s conditions.

ALOR SETAR, March 30 ― Pakatan Rakyat (PR) is facing trouble in Selangor because the pact made excessive promises to Selangor voters in Election 2008 that it could not fulfil, says Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak.

Some1,000 housewives filed a RM5.86 million lawsuit against the Selangor government at the Shah Alam High Court last Thursday for failing to give them RM100 allowances each, as promised in the opposition’s manifesto in the 2008 general election.

“They made too many promises. After that, they couldn’t afford to pay for them,” Azizan told The Malaysian Insider in an exclusive interview recently.

“Gangs protested every day until they even ask the government to pay for their house. They’re crazy,” he added, referring to the frequent protests against Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim’s administration of the country’s wealthiest state.

Several non-governmental organisations, as well as single mothers, senior citizens and housewives, protested against the Selangor government last year on various state issues, including the opposition’s alleged failure in implementing its election pledges.

The Selangor government has also been hit with several lawsuits since last year by single mothers and senior citizens claiming for allowances and insurance coverage, as well as residents demanding water subsidies, that were all purportedly promised in the opposition’s 2008 election manifesto.

Asked what he would promise voters should PR retain Kedah in the coming Election 2013, Azizan (picture) said: “No promises. We’ll just improve things.”

The Kedah PAS commissioner, however, stressed that voters did not just want to rely on government funds, but desired a government that could ensure them a good life.

“What is important in today’s context is that the rakyat doesn’t just want to depend on public funds. They want a good government, a government that can guarantee them safety and harmony,” said Azizan.

“That’s why we call this state ‘Kedah Sejahtera’ (Prosperous Kedah). People have their own businesses, they farm, they have their own money. But we are not to bribe, we are not to have cronies, and we are not to abuse funds for our own benefit,” he added, referring to the theme of Malaysia’s rice bowl state.

The loose coalition of PKR, PAS and the DAP denied Barisan Nasional (BN) its customary two-thirds parliamentary majority in the historic Election 2008.

The opposition pact, which will contest in the coming Election 2013 as PR, had wrested Selangor, Kedah, Perak and Penang from BN, besides retaining Kelantan.

The MCA has agreed to give two parliamentary seats - Wangsa Maju and Kuantan - to Umno but it was not clearly stated whether this involves a seat swap.

MCA will call another meeting on Thursday to finalise the list, according to the report.

Kong told China Press that he is not aware of the decision to remove him as a candidate.

Deputy president Liow Tiong Lai, meanwhile, has claimed that yesterday’s meeting did not discuss the issues of candidates and seat swap.

“Will it be the last central committee meeting? It seems like the last meeting,” he was quoted as saying.

Take on Kit Siang, MCA rep tells Soi Lek
MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek has been urged to take on DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang, who has announced his candidature for the Gelang Patah parliamentary constituency, a MCA stronghold.

China Press reported that Pasir Gudang MCA division chief Tan Cher Puk said it would raise the party's morale nationwide should Chua contest against Lim.

“So far nobody knows whether the president will contest in the coming general election or not. The MCA (members) in some areas are experiencing low morale,” he was quoted as saying.

The Johor Jaya assemblyperson explained that both Chua and Lim are from Johor, and a battle between the two in Gelang Patah would dispel the perception that MCA does not dare challenge dangerous constituencies or those contested by strong opponents.

He further argued that Chua's candidacy in Gelang Patah could force DAP to focus their resources in southern Johor, giving MCA a higher chance to excel in constituencies in northern Johor.

Gelang Patah is a suburb seat adjacent to Johor Bahru city with 54 percent Chinese voters.

Shahrizat - Family members didn't discuss condo pu

KUALA LUMPUR: No family members discussed with her the purchase of two condominium units, former Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil (pix) told the High Court here Monday.

As a result, she said, she was in the dark over the purchase of the two 'One Menerung' condominium units allegedly with National Feedlot Corporation (NFCorp) funds.

"Yes, they (family members) did not discuss with me," she said when cross-examined by defence counsel Ranjit Singh in her suit against PKR Wanita chief Zuraida Kamaruddin and the party's strategy director Mohd Rafizi Ramli.

Questioned further by Ranjit, who acted for Mohd Rafizi, whether she knew that a company by the name of National Meat & Livestock Corporation Sdn Bhd (NMLC) had purchased the units, Shahrizat replied: "I do not know".

The Wanita Umno chief said she was aware of allegations in respect to the NFCorp when the company became an issue.

Shahrizat disagreed with Ranjit's suggestion that Mohd Rafizi's statement over the NFCorp issue was in response to statements made by the Prime Minister and Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Minister in Parliament in 2011.

"No, I disagree. He (Mohd Rafizi) was gunning for me as Wanita Barisan chief because he is afraid of the strength of Wanita Barisan," she said, adding that Mohd Rafizi's statement over the NFCorp issue had always mentioned her family.

On Jan 19, last year, Shahrizat filed a defamation suit against Zuraida and Mohd Rafizi over an alleged defamatory statement the duo had made about her on the NFCorp issue.

She is seeking RM100mil in general, exemplary and aggravated damages.

She has also applied for an injunction to prevent the defendants from issuing the statement concerned, either verbally or in print, against her, NFCorp or its associate companies.

The hearing before Judicial Commissioner Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera continues. - Bernama
