Advise on PC upgrade

Ok heres the deal, my current pc is :-

AMD 3500
1.5G ram (not sure which ddr it is, its the corsair with leds)
Nvidia 6600 (agp)

I use this pc mostly for gaming but lately it seems to be crap at running the newish games i.e. Lotro, Bioshock etc. Obviously its the time to upgrade. But I havent been up to date with the latest tech, so basically i dont really know whats the best way to do this. My current budget is rm2k and i would like to upgrade both the cpu and gcard. Upgrading the cpu will mean upgrading the mobo too. My sound card is fine, i have a 480w psu and a decent case. What are your thoughts on this ? Is 2k enough to get a good solid upgrade, or do you think i should save up some more and upgrade later in the year ?

edit: Forgot to mention that i prefer playing games at 1280x1024 with AAx4.
