The Expanse Canceled At Syfy After Three Seasons

The Expanse has been canceled by Syfy , with the third season of the show set to be the last on network. Based on the series of books by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, working under the pen name of James S. A. Corey, the series tells a weaving tale of conspiracy-laden plots and the tense relationship between different factions in the solar system in the middle of a catastrophic event.

The show was one of the major releases on Syfy, receiving huge critical acclaim and a devoted group of fans. Filling the void left by the likes of Battlestar Galactica, those who supported the show saw it as raising the bar for the current crop of science fiction television shows, and its most recent season cemented its place as one of the best sci-fi series around . However, it's clearly not done enough to keep its place in Syfy's roster.

Now, The Expanse has been left in as much danger as the remaining crew of the Canterbury. As reported by Deadline, Syfy has decided not to continue on with season four of the show, meaning that its last episode on the network will be aired in July. Alcon Television Group, which produces The Expanse, is not calling it quits altogether but will instead shop the show around for potential suitors.

Although the show has had a huge critical reception in its three season runtime, the decision to cancel The Expanse appears to have come down to ratings. The series is underperforming in comparison to other series on the network such as The Magicians and Krypton , and the nature of The Expanse's relationship with Syfy means that the network only has first-run linear rights in the US, which means the show's streaming and digital views have no impact on its standing at Syfy as a whole.

Understandably, Alcon Entertainment is disappointed in the decision made by Syfy to cancel the show. “We are very disappointed the show will not be returning to Syfy,” stated Alcon Entertainment CEOs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson. Kosove and Johnson, who also co-founded Alcon, reiterated that The Expanse would be looking for a new home. “Given the commercial and critical success of the show, we fully plan to pursue other opportunities for this terrific and original IP.”

Fans of the show will equally be unhappy with news of the show's cancellation by Syfy. In spite of the underperformance in the ratings, it seems like something of a curveball for viewers who had seen Syfy's reiteration of its commitment to genre television and felt comfortable that The Expanse would be safe. Nonetheless, given the vocal fanbase that the series has, particularly from a streaming perspective, there's every chance that the series could find a new lease of life elsewhere.

Rumor: Peter Jackson Considering a DCEU Movie

A wild new rumor suggests that Peter Jackson may be considering tackling a DCEU movie. The unofficially titled DC Extended Universe launched only two years ago and it has already produced four blockbuster movies (not counting Zack Snyder's 2013 film, Man of Steel), the last of which was 2017's critically-maligned and commercially disappointing film, Justice League . While some detractors believe Warner Bros. is going to reboot the universe, that couldn't be the further from the truth. The DCEU is still pushing ahead.

At the moment, there are three DCEU movies slated to hit theaters within the next two years: James Wan's Aquaman in 2018, and David F. Sandberg's Shazam! and Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman 2 in 2019. Then, there are plenty more movies beyond those that are in various stages of development, many of which still need writers, directors, and producers. And one of those movies just might get the likes of Peter Jackson behind them, if a new rumor is to be believed.

The One Ring reports that Peter Jackson and his New Zealand production crew are currently pondering over signing onto Amazon's Lord of the Rings TV series or joining the DCEU. Both are projects that are being developed under Warner Bros. Pictures' oversight, so whatever their decision is, they might end up working with some of the same people, hence the pending decision.

Although Peter Jackson has dabbled in a variety of projects over the years, he is undoubtedly most well-known for directing and producing The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, of which the former is widely considered one of the best movie trilogies ever made. So, it makes sense that Amazon and New Line Cinema (a subdivision of Warner Bros. Entertainment) wants Jackson to work with them on the new Lord of the Rings prequel. It was even reported that Jackson was considering producing the LOTR series , though that hasn't been confirmed – and we now know why.

Jackson spent years developing Middle-Earth on the big screen, so it also makes sense that he would want to try something new. The DCEU would be an intriguing, yet an understandable alternative for the filmmaker. Remember, Lord of the Rings and the DCEU are both Warner Bros. properties and Jackson has a working relationship with the current DC Films chief Walter Hamada , who was a production executive at New Line Cinema during the time in which Jackson developed The Hobbit trilogy. And Jackson wouldn't be the first director/producer from that label to jump over to DC; just look at James Wan and David F. Sandberg.

Again, this is merely a rumor and should be taken with a grain of salt, but that doesn't mean fans can't at least look at the possibilities. Of all the DC projects Warner Bros. has in development, a Peter Jackson-directed or produced Justice League Dark movie would surely capture the attention of comic book readers and perhaps even some general audiences. But, that's just something we'll have to wait and see.
