Suspect in friend’s murder asked iPhone

A 20-year-old student accused of killing his friend and roommate allegedly asked iPhone’s Siri for assistance where he could possibly hide the body, the trial for the case revealed.

During the court hearing, Detective Matt Goeckel of Gainesville Police Department testified at the trial at Alachua County Criminal Justice Centre, Florida that murder suspect, Pedro Bravo, turned to his smart phone for help in looking for an ideal place to dump a dead body.

Bravo was accused of killing his friend, Christian Aguilar, 18 on September 20, 2012 over an argument about the victim’s dating the suspect’s former girlfriend, Erika Friman.

On the day of Aguilar’s disappearance, Goeckel testified based on data recovered from the accused iPhone, Bravo supposedly told Siri, the smartphone’s digital-voice assistant: “I need to hide my roommate.”

Siri allegedly replied: “What kind of place are you looking for?” then suggested some place like swamps, reservoirs, metal foundries, and dumps.

However, Bravo’s lawyer argued there was no sufficient evidence to prove it was Bravo himself who made the inquiry and the screen grab (see below) recovered from the suspect’s phone is just one of the hundred photos.

Bravo was accused of drugging Aguilar on the day the latter disappeared then strangled him inside a car before dumping his body 60 miles away from where they were last seen together.

A closed circuit television (CCTV) footage showed the two were last seen buying a Kanye CD at a Best Buy store in Grainsville, Florida. Aguilar’s body was accidentally discovered weeks later by a hunter buried in a shallow grave in a remote woods southwest of Gainsville.

The 20-year-old University of Florida student was charged with murder on September 28, 2012, even before the body was discovered. He earlier admitted to beating his friend, but not to killing him.

The two had a falling out after Bravo’s ex-girlfriend, Friman, dumped him and began dating his friend Aguilar.

Apart from the inquiry on dumping a body, Detective Goeckel further testified recovered data from Bravo’s iPhone revealed the suspect used the phone’s flashlight from 11:31pm to 12:01am on the day the victim vanished.

Nama mangsa : Dr Thillainathan K. Selvadurai, 51 tahun, Petaling Jaya, Selangor-Pakar Perunding Obstetrician & Gynaecology

Jarak perjalanan antara Petaling Jaya ke Slim River bukanlah satu jarak yang dekat dan terpaksa ditempuhi doktor yang dikenali ramai ini hampir setiap hari dengan memandu bersendirian.

Namun , atas tugasnya sebagai doktor, dan dilantik pula mengetuai Jabatan Obstetrician & Gynaecology Hospital Slim River sejak awal bulan ini, tidak menghalang Dr Thillai untuk berkhidmat.

Mendiang pernah menyuarakan hasrat kepada ahli keluarga untuk menaiki sahaja komuter setiap hari berulang alik sementara kenderaan jabatan akan diperolehi tidak lama lagi.

Dengan memandu Toyota Unser miliknya sendiri, hari ini merupakan hari terakhir pengorbanan Dr Thillainathan tercatat.

Kenderaannya dipercayai hilang kawalan sebelum terbabas ke arah besi pembahagi tengah lebuhraya dan terbalik beberapa kali.

Mangsa yang cedera parah dan tersepit di tempat duduknya, ditemui berpakaian kemas bertali leher, maut di tempat kejadian.

Sepasukan anggota bomba dari Balai Bomba dan Penyelamat Kuala Kubu Bharu mengambil masa kira-kira setengah jam bagi mengeluarkan mayatnya.

Di lokasi kejadian, 2 adik beradik mendiang tiba sebaik dimaklumkan mengenai kejadian, dan mereka amat tenang ketika menerima berita ini.

Dan sebagai budibicara ehsan pegawai Penyiasat kes, Inspektor Maszaliza Ibrahim,, mayat mendiang dihantar ke Hospital Kuala Lumpur (tempat kerja asal mendiang) untuk bedah siasat.

Dr Thillainathan K. Selvadurai, sebelum ini bertugas sebagai pakar perunding di Hospital Kuala Lumpur dan sangat dikenali ramai.

Berdasarkan pengalaman dan kepakarannya , mendiang dinaikkan pangkat dan mengetuai jabatan yang sama di Hospital Slim River.

Untuk rekod, mendiang juga merupakan ahli yang sangat aktif di dalam Malaysian Medical Association dan merupakan Pengerusi SCHOMOS (mewakili Doktor Hospital Kerajaan)

Assalamualaikum dah lama tak masuk blog sendiri... sangat sibuk ...sibuk...sibuk dengan macam2 urusan dari hal anak-anak hingga ke urusan kerja yang tak habis2...

Malam ni masa menggugel..tetiba mata terbaca tentang berita kemalangan jalan raya yang menimpa seorang doktor pakar O&G dari HKL...Hati berdetik...bila aku membaca...hati tetiba rasa sangat sayu dan terkenang tentang doktor ini yang pernah merawat aku semasa aku berada di saat kritikal. Bukan setakat merawat malah membelah semula perut aku buat kali kedua dalam masa tidak sampai 24 jam! Satu pembedahan yang sangat mendebarkan.

Masih terngiang2 bagaimana dia mengarah dan menerangkan kepada dua orang doktor junior tentang keadaan aku yang kritikal. Teringat2 bagaimana dia sendiri menolak mesin pengimbas yang besar itu masuk ke dalam bilik aku selepas aku bleeding selepas pembedahan pertama. Teringat2 kembali bagaimana dia scan semula dan menerangkan kepada aku keadaan aku. Bicaranya tidak banyak tetapi ketegasannya serta dedikasinya terhadap pesakit seperti aku sangat membuat aku terharu.

Takziah kepada keluarga Dr ST Nathan. Semoga tabah menghadapi kesukaran ini.

A 3-D pen that lets you draw objects in the air

We're all doodlers by nature. Give most people a pen, paper and some down time, and they'll fill the margins with the fruits of their imagination.

But imagine if you could wave a pen in the air and create a three-dimensional rendering: A toy, a sculpture, a crude architectural model.

Soon you will. A Boston-based startup, WobbleWorks, has created what they are calling the world's first 3-D printing pen. It's called the 3Doodler, and it's been a sensation on Kickstarter, the crowdfunding site, since it debuted there Tuesday morning. The makers of the 3Doodler set a modest fundraising goal of $30,000; within 48 hours, backers had pledged more than $1.1 million.

"We knew it was a great product. But we didn't expect the response to be this fast," said Daniel Cowen, a spokesman for the gadget, which is still a prototype. "The velocity of the response caught us by surprise. It's phenomenal."

The 3Doodler plugs into an electrical outlet and works sort of like a glue gun. As the pen draws, it oozes heated plastic, which quickly cools and solidifies, allowing its user to build an infinite variety of patterns and shapes. Its makers say it works on surfaces or in the air.

Users load spaghetti-like strands of non-toxic ABS plastic - the same stuff that's in 3-D printers - into the back of the pen. (A biogradeable form of plastic made from corn is also available.) The 3Doodler's makers say each one-foot strand of plastic, available in a wide range of colors, can produce about 11 feet of moldable material.

WobbleWorks sees the 3Doodler as a simple and affordable form of 3-D printing, an emerging form of manufacturing that uses computer models to help machines build plastic objects. The MakerBot Replicator 2, perhaps the best-known 3-D printer for the home, costs $2,200. Cowen said they expect to sell the 3Doodler for $75, which includes a small bag of plastic strands.

Additional 1kg spools of plastic will be available from a variety of sources for $30 to $55, WobbleWorks says. The pen's makers say the average 1kg spool of 3mm ABS plastic will supply roughly 4,000 feet of 3Doodling, or about the height of three Empire State Buildings.

The gadget is shaping up to be a hit for WobbleWorks, a small toy and robotics company led by computer engineers Peter Dilworth and Maxwell Bogue.

If manufacturing goes according to schedule, the first buyers will receive their 3Doodlers in September, Cowen said. Buyers who order now won't receive the pen until November, he said.

The makers of 3Doodler have been collaborating with wire artists on Etsy, the crafts website, to show how the pen can be used to create artwork, jewelry and other objects.

"We really want to create a community around 3Doodler," Cowen said. With more than 13,000 financial backers already on Kickstarter, they may already have.

Philippine navy blocks Sulu Sea

The navy says this is to prevent more followers of the Sultan of Sulu entering Sabah.

MANILA: The Philippine Navy has sealed off the so-called southern backdoor to prevent the followers of the Sultan of Sulu province from traveling to Sabah, where a standoff between the sultanate’s followers and Malaysian security authorities persists.

The naval blockade was one of the measures taken by the Philippine government to prevent the escalation of the already tense situation, meant to ease the tension in and around Lahad Datu, where hundreds of Filipinos were holed up.
Lt. Commander Gregory Gerald Favic, Navy spokesman, on Thursday, said that six ships and an islander plane have been patrolling the Sulu Sea after Malaysian authorities reported the presence of loyal supporters of the sultanate. The group is headed by Raja Muda Azzimudie Kiram, a brother of Sultan Jamalul Kiram 3rd of Sulu.

The Manila Times reports the Navy patrol team is keeping a close watch on the vicinity of the provinces of Sulu, Tawi-Tawi and Basilan, home provinces of Kiram’s mostly Tausog warriors.

The naval patrol, he said, is for “security and stability of the situation.”
“We are avoiding the escalation of the issue,” the Navy spokesman added.
Favic clarified that the Navy’s patrol and reconnaissance mission on the vast Sulu Sea was not requested by Malaysia. He added though that the Philippine Navy is ready to conduct joint maritime patrol operations with the Malaysian Navy within the disputed area.

The Sulu Sea is a large body of water in the southwestern part of the country.
Favic said that no one has been arrested trying to cross the southern backdoor going to Sabah so far.
Heirs of the Sultan of Sulu said that their followers will stay put in Sabah, which they claim as theirs. The Filipinos are staying in the village of Tanduao, surrounded by Malaysian forces.

Negotiations

Emissaries of the Philippine government continue to negotiate with the leaders of hundreds of members of the sultanate of Sulu, who rejected Malaysian demands to return to the Philippines.
Government sources said that there is a plan to fly a Philippine Air Force C-130 transport plane to Sabah, or a naval boat to fetch Azzimudie’s group and bring them back home.

But whether such plans will be carried out “depends on the situation on the ground,” a source, who is privy to the negotiations with the sultanate leaders said.

Two weeks into the standoff, Malaysian officials are now calling for a drastic action against the sultanate’s followers.
Sabah’s Daily Express quoted Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein as saying that there will be no compromise on the rights and safety of its people in resolving the intrusion of the Filipinos, some of them armed.
“Since they had guns, it is important our action does not lead to bloodshed,” he said.

Malaysian security forces have surrounded the village, where the sultanate members are seeking refuge.
“The issue is not political, not racial, no connection with the stand on sovereignty but in our context this is our land and this is something that can jeopardize the nation’s security. This is why we are trying to handle wisely without bloodshed or loss of lives in our land,” he said.

He said that Malaysia is working closely with the Philippines to resolve the standoff.
