BEIJING, Feb 6 (Reuters): Sinovac Biotech said on Saturday that its unit's Covid-19 vaccine has been formally approved for use by the general public by China's medical products regulator.

It marks the second Covid-19 vaccine green-lighted for public use in China, after a shot developed by a Beijing institute affiliated to state-owned China National Pharmaceutical Group (Sinopharm) was approved in December.

Prior to the approvals, both vaccines have already been used in China's vaccination program mainly targeting key groups deemed to be at higher risk of exposure to the virus.

Indonesia, Turkey, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay, and Laos have granted emergency authorizations for the CoronaVac vaccine developed by Sinovac Life Sciences, Sinovac said in a news release.

The approval is based on the two-month results from late-stage clinical trials overseas, from which the final analysis data has not yet been obtained, Sinovac said. - Reuters

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador confirmed that Bukit Aman has opened an investigation paper on Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali for flouting mandatory home quarantine after returning from Turkey on July 7.

"Police have opened an investigation paper on this case,” he told Bernama TV in a brief reply via WhatsApp here Sunday (Aug 23).

Meanwhile, Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department deputy director (Investigation/Legal) DCP Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said that so far, police have received 27 reports pertaining to the issue.

"Police are investigating Mohd Khairuddin in accordance with the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 (Act 342),” he said.

The Health Ministry, in a statement yesterday, said that it had issued a compound of RM1,000 to Mohd Khairuddin on Aug 7 for breaching the regulations. Mohd Khairuddin has settled the compound.

Mohd Khairuddin returned from Turkey on July 7 and the first nasopharyngeal swab sample was taken on the same day and was found to be negative. The second and third Covid-19 screening tests also showed negative results.

Recently, Seputeh MP Teresa Kok claimed that the minister did not undergo the 14 days quarantine after returning from Turkey.

As a result, Mohd Khairuddin, who is also a PAS central committee member, was heavily criticised by many parties for failing to comply with the SOPs set by the authorities, in particular, defying the quarantine instructions for returning Malaysians from abroad.

The RM1,000 compound issued against Mohd Khairuddin has further sparked anger among social media users.

In a separate statement yesterday, Mohd Khairuddin said he will return his salary as minister from May to August and contribute the amount to the Covid-19 fund under the Health Ministry. - Bernama

PUTRAJAYA: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has apportioned blame on Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for the fall of the Pakatan Harapan government.

Speaking to Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia members in a closed-door meeting on Sunday (March 1), he said Muhyiddin wanted to leverage Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's desire to be prime minister and create a political crisis.

The former prime minister, whose chairmanship of Bersatu is also in question, said the "real" crisis only happened when Muhyiddin took the party out of Pakatan Harapan.

"On the day when we had the Pakatan presidential council meeting, I received information from my political secretary that Anwar was apparently going to demand that I appoint him as deputy prime minister.

"So of course we got angry. But this did not happen - what happened was that all of the leaders in Pakatan supported me (to go on as prime minister).

"Muhyiddin wanted an excuse for a crisis to happen - but he could not get it from Anwar.

"When he took Bersatu out of Pakatan, that is when the crisis really happened," said Dr Mahathir.

The closed-door meeting was streamed live on Parti Amanah Negara's Facebook page.

Dr Mahathir also said that Anwar scuppered his plans to be reappointed as prime minister.

"I was sad that I lost, because Anwar asked Pakatan to nominate him. He had 92 votes. I had 60, or even more. If Pakatan voted for me then I would have gotten the majority.

"He wanted to be the prime minister, even though he knew he couldn't get the majority," said Dr Mahathir.

Dr Mahathir said Anwar had always been "obsessed" with becoming prime minister.

"In the past, he had a lot of support. But now, people support me," he said.

hi all,

i need some help/advice for this matter.
so i'm a malaysian and my wife is a vietnamese. both of us currently staying in philippines.
i plan to let my wife deliver the baby in malaysia, so what documents my wife need so she can deliver the baby in kl and how long does she can stay in malaysia as a tourist?..will the immigration not allow her to enter malaysia since she is a vietnamese.
