Zahid: Herald’s ‘Allah’ ban extends to East Msia

(MM) - The Catholic Church weekly, the Herald, cannot refer to God as “Allah” even in Sabah and Sarawak, Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today, despite the prime minister’s assurance that East Malaysians were free to use the Arabic word.

Zahid said this was based on the recent Court of Appeal ruling that the Home Ministry’s decision to ban the use of the word “Allah” in the Herald was justified, but he stressed that the Al-Kitab, the Bahasa Malaysia translation of the Christian bible, is allowed to describe God as “Allah” as it is not technically a “publication”.

“It can be used in the Al-Kitab, but not in the Herald,” Zahid told reporters at his office here today, after meeting a Cambodian government minister.

“The Al-Kitab is not a publication; it’s a bible,” he added.

The Home Ministry seized copies of the Herald at the Kota Kinabalu airport last week for inspection, but cleared the newsletter for distribution yesterday after finding that the word “Allah” was not used in the weekly.

When asked if the ban of the word “Allah” was restricted to the Herald, Zahid said: “Refer to the court verdict”.

“I don’t want to go beyond what has been decided by the Court of Appeal,” he added.

According to Herald editor Father Lawrence Andrew, around 2,000 copies of the weekly publication were seized at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport on Thursday, apparently on order of the Home Ministry.

The Council of Churches Malaysia (CCM), an umbrella body of Protestant churches, decried the confiscation as a violation of the Catholic Church’s right to distribute the newsletter to its own members.
Deaths at NS camps due to undetectable diseases

(MM) - “Since the programme started in 2004, actually there were only 20 deaths, and not 22.

All 20 deaths at National Service (NS) camps, except for one, were caused by “undetectable” health problems such as leukemia, the Defence Ministry revealed today.

In a reply to Sungai Petani MP Datuk Johari Abdul in Parliament, Deputy Minister Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri said the deaths were “undetectable” as they were due to health problems prior to the trainees’ participation at the camps.

“Since the programme started in 2004, actually there were only 20 deaths, and not 22.

“There were various reasons for the deaths but the majority was caused by the trainees’ health problems like leukemia, heart problems, breathing difficulties, which were not detectable, while one death at the Muadzam Shah camp was caused by a serious misunderstanding, resulting in one person being charged in court,” he said.

On September 22, 2013, an 18-year-old trainee was bludgeoned to death at the Muadzam Shah, Pahang camp for allegedly cutting queue during breakfast earlier in the day.

However, there has been reports such as death caused by leptospirosis, or commonly known as the “rat fever” in March 2012, at a camp in Perak, a death due to viral infection in June 2005, in Negri Sembilan, another death in Sabah in May during the same year after allegedly being injured during training.

There was also a report on a trainee who died when he was swimming in Sarawak in April 2004.

“There is one rape case on February 24, 2004 when the programme had just started and the case has been tried in court and brought up to the Court of Appeal, the trainer has been punished 12 years jail with three strokes of the cane.

“As for arguments or fights, there are 442 cases misunderstandings in 10 years from 2004 to 2013 and 242 reported to police to be recorded and get counseling from the police while the rest were settled amicably.

“The government is always concerned about these cases and will take the appropriate action based on the law especially cases involving negligence and officers who did not follow the SOP,” he said.
Malaysia bans Ke$ha concert over religious fears

(AFP) - US pop singer Ke$ha has been forced to cancel a concert due to take place in Muslim-majority Malaysia on Saturday after authorities said it would undermine religious and cultural sensitivities.

"We are distraught to confirm that the show (at Kuala Lumpur stadium) will be cancelled," concert organiser Livescape said in a statement, adding that it was losing 1.1 million ringgit ($350,000) due to ban.

Livescape said it had received a letter from the authorities on the decision to ban the concert "at the 11th hour" on Friday, despite agreeing to "modify the show to suit the Malaysian culture and sensitivities".

The Ministry of Communications and Multimedia said in a brief statement Friday that it had rejected the application for the concert on grounds that it "touches on religious sensitivities and cultural values of Malaysians".

Ke$ha's MTV reality series 'My Crazy Beautiful Life' has featured her bizarre behaviour in the past, including drinking her own urine.

Some of her songs refer to sex and alcohol, which are considered taboo subjects by most Muslims.

Livescape said it had made adjustments to Ke$ha's song lyrics, wardrobe changes, and had modified a set list to specifically adhere to the guidelines set forth by the authorities.

Last month, Malaysia pulled the plug on a planned concert by US heavy metal group Lamb of God after Islamic authorities declared the band's music religiously offensive.

To avoid business risks and similar bans, Livescape said: "We encourage the authorities to engage in a productive dialogue with local promoters to avoid the current situation from repeating."

Muslims make up 60 percent of multi-ethnic Malaysia's 28 million people, while Christians account for about nine percent.

Malaysia is known for its relatively moderate version of Islam.

But conservatives occasionally cry foul over concerts by Western artists whom they accuse of promoting promiscuity, corrupting young people or offending religious sensitivities, though most concerts usually go ahead.

Music superstar Beyonce has twice cancelled shows in Malaysia amid criticism of her image, while American singer Erykah Badu had a concert cancelled by authorities last year after a photo appeared showing her with the Arabic word for "Allah" painted on her body.
Copies of Herald seized at KK airport

(MM) - The Home Ministry has allegedly barred the distribution of Catholic weekly the Herald in Sabah, despite earlier assurances by the government that there was no ban on the use of the word “Allah” in the East Malaysian state.

According to Herald editor Fr Lawrence Andrew, around 2,000 copies of the weekly publication were seized at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) on Thursday, apparently on order of the Home Ministry.

“The consignment arrived at 2.54pm on Thursday, and it was checked by KDN officials as the usual practice,” he told The Malay Mail Online, referring to the Home Ministry’s Malay acronym.

“The forwarding company were however told not to release the consignment. The company checked again on Friday at 10am, and were told that the consignment has been withheld. No reason was given,” Lawrence added.

The priest said that as of now, there is still no news as to the status of the consignment, which was supposed to have been distributed to churches in the Kota Kinabalu and Keningau dioceses.

When contacted, however, deputy home minister Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said he had no knowledge of the seizure.

The ban on distribution is the latest incident to hit the controversial tussle between the Catholic Church and the government over the use of the word “Allah”.

Earlier this month, the Court of Appeal ruled that the Home Ministry’s decision to ban the use of the word in the Herald was justified, as the use of the word “Allah” was not integral to the practice of the Christian faith.

The ruling — which overturned an earlier High Court decision that the ban was unconstitutional — has since sparked confusion over the use of the word by Christians in their worship, especially with conflicting opinions within the government itself on how far the ruling would affect practising Christians.

Churches in Sabah and Sarawak, however, have said they will continue their age-old practice of referring to God as “Allah” in their worship and in their holy scriptures.

Several ministers also said recently that the 10-point solution issued by Putrajaya in 2011 — which allows the printing, importation and distribution of the Al-Kitab, the Bahasa Malaysia version of the Christian bible, containing the word “Allah” — should stand, despite the appellate court ruling.

According to a 2010 census, Muslims are Malaysia’s largest religious group, followed by Buddhists. Christians are the third-largest at 2.6 million, which comes up to about 10 per cent of the Malaysian population.

Bumiputera Christians, who form about 64 per cent or close to two-thirds of the Christian community in Malaysia, have used the word “Allah” when praying and speaking in the national language and their native tongues for centuries.
No 'peanuts' for this Yindian leader

(fz.com) - A letter written by Samy Vellu to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to secure a national service camp in Sungkai, Perak, used the race card to help Silver Line gain an advantage.

A seven-year-old support letter written by then works minister Datuk Seri S Samy Vellu to help secure a national service camp in Perak, is returning to haunt the person benefitting from the "surat sokong" (support letter) – MIC Youth Chief T Mohan.

Following Mohan's statement on Oct 17, that the government does not give "peanuts" to the Indian community in Budget 2014, he has received a barrage of criticisms.
Among them is that he has been receiving much more than a can of peanuts through the offices of Samy Vellu – the then MIC president.
The criticisms centre on Silver Line Services Sdn Bhd, of which Mohan is a major shareholder. A letter written by Samy Vellu to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to secure a national service camp in Sungkai, Perak, used the race card to help Silver Line gain an advantage.

"The involvement of the Indian community in the National Service programme is very limited. Hence I appeal to your good self to consider the application by Silver Line Sdn Bhd. "The approval of the application is in line with the government's aspiration to improve the economic standing of the Indian community," read the letter which was dated July 28, 2006.
POWER chairman S Gobikrishnan said the camp (Kem Sinaran Suria) is one example where the Indian community is left in a lurch while only a handful of connected Indians are benefitting.

Justin Bieber is the new Robin

Fans of the upcoming Batman vs. Superman film flew into a rage after Justin Bieber suggested he will be playing Robin in the big budget blockbuster.

The 19-year-old Canadian star tweeted an image of himself with a script for the film along with the hashtag #Robin at the weekend – prompting fans to paniche had been cast as the Boy Wonder.

‘The movie would be ruined if that lil squirt was in it!’ said one disgruntled fan on social media.

While another took things further to say: ‘HELL NO! If this is real, nobody is ever going to watch any of these movies again, I would rather kill myself then watch Justin Bieber even have a part in this movie unless he gets killed, brutally.’

The fan outrage mirrors that following the announcement that Ben Affleck had been cast as Batman in the new film – which drew demands and petitions for the role to be recast.

That led to commentator posting on Twitter: ‘The only things that can defeat Superman are kryptonite, magic, and putting Ben Affleck and Justin Bieber in his movie.’
Batman vs. Superman is the planned sequel to the this year’s Zack Snyder-directed Man Of Steel film, which opened to commercial – but not critical – success this summer.

But it has since emerged that Biebs is simply filming a spoof for Will Ferrell-backed website Funny Or Die after he tweeted ‘Off to do something funny . . . or die,’ in quick succession to his Robin tweet.

The star had earned the backing of British boyband Union J, who met the suggestion with open minds
‘I genuinely think he would make a good Robin. Back in the day Robin was young,’ JJ Hamblet told us in a chat on Monday.

While bandmate Josh Cuthbert also added: ‘I think Ben Affleck will be a good Batman. Daredevil was a good film,’ referencing the 2003 comic action flick in which Affleck played another masked vigilante.

Batman vs. Superman is due to be released in cinemas in July 2015.
To date, thousands of suspected gangsters from underworld organisations in the country have been arrested, but surprisingly, none of them were from the Tiga Line group.
This latest information was revealed by Bukit Aman’s secret societies, gambling and anti vice principle assistant director, SAC Abdul Jalil Hassan today.

Jalil told FMT over the phone that they have yet to arrest any Tiga Line member, but was quick to add that the police have arrested a number of Malay gangsters from other triad groups. Tiga Line, closely linked to a Malay NGO known as Pekida, is believed to be a well known group of Malay gangsters.

“Thus far none of them have been arrested but we have detained a number of Malay thugs from different underworld group,” said Jalil.
When asked if the police are having difficulties in arresting Tiga Line members, Jalil denied it and said that they have identified a number of faces but have yet to detain anyone. “We know who they are and we have identified them, however, we have not made any arrests yet,” he added

Sos Gangster Sambal Petai Belacan : http://www.malaysia-today.net/mtcolumns/ne...n-police-lockup

Thread Chinese power!

IN A recent two-hour class in one of Kelantan's religious schools, female students in veils and loose-fitting baju kurungs - traditional Malay wear - learn how to read and speak in Mandarin and write in Chinese.

Their teacher is Mr Wang Yin Kang, a Chinese-Muslim teacher from Yunnan, China.

Some of his students in the Tarbiyah Mardhiyah Religious Secondary School, which means "Upbringing that pleases Allah" in Arabic, are also members of the Chinese Language society, where they take up drama classes and carry out dialogues in Mandarin, supervised by Mr Wang.

There is a famous saying in Islam: "Seek knowledge even as far as China." It appears that Malay-Muslims in Kelantan are, as closely as possible, trying to do just that.

Kelantan is the most Malay state in the country, yet there are proportionately more Malays studying Chinese here than in other states.

It is common to find Malays enrolling their children in Chinese-language schools or attending Chinese-language classes offered in religious schools.

The state government under Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS) funds Mandarin classes in schools. It even sent three Malay-Muslim teaching college graduates to study Mandarin in Guangzhou, China in 2009 and has hired a few teachers from China to conduct Mandarin classes.

Many Kelantanese take the lead from their revered former menteri besar, said Mr Hu Pang Chaw, chairman of the PAS Supporters Congress, the party's non-Muslim wing.

"The Kelantanese see the party's spiritual leader Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat as the prime example of someone who encourages the younger generation to take up the Chinese language, as five of his grandchildren attend Chinese schools," he said.

Located in the north-east of Peninsular Malaysia bordering Thailand and looking out to the South China Sea, Kelantan's population is 95 per cent ethnic Malay. Chinese, Thais and Indians make up the rest of the state's population of 1.6 million.

All around Malaysia, more parents are sending their children to Chinese schools and Chinese tuition classes. But in Kelantan, the concentration of Malay students in these schools is much higher.

Statistics on Malays' enrolment in Chinese vernacular schools funded by the government are not publicly released.

But according to Mr Hu, between 20 per cent and 50 per cent of the student population in Kelantan's 15 Chinese vernacular primary schools and two secondary schools are Malay. In a Chinese primary school in Rantau Panjang on the outskirts of Kelantan, two- thirds of the students are Malays.

In other parts of Malaysia, there is an average of about 10 per cent Malay students in Chinese schools.

(National Express) - Kulim JKM director Rohana Yusof refused to receive the memorandum and instead chose to remain at the department's office on the first floor of the municipal council building complex.

A disabled man resorted to crawling up a flight of stairs in a bid to submit a memorandum to the Kulim Welfare Department (JKM) after its director snubbed his association.
When contacted, Padang Serai MP N Surendran said some 50 members from the Persatuan OKU Setia Daerah Kulim had protested outside JKM to voice their grouses about welfare benefits around 1.30pm today.

However, he said Kulim JKM director Rohana Yusof refused to receive the memorandum and instead chose to remain at the department's office on the first floor of the municipal council building complex.

After waiting for over an hour under the hot sun, Surendran said one of the association's committee members, 53-year-old Gnana Pragasan (left), who cannot walk, decided to personally go up to the first floor and hand the memorandum to Rohana.

"With the memorandum in his mouth, he used his hands to climb all the way up and banged the door until the director finally came out to receive the memorandum," he said.

Surendran said the incident today illustrated the welfare department's insensitivity towards the disabled and elderly in the country.

"It is a sucker punch for the disabled community, it is a national shame... the (Woman, Family and Community Development) minister must answer," he said.

Surendran said among the grouses in the memorandum was the fact that the Kulim JKM office was on the first floor where disabled people found it difficult to access.

They were also upset that JKM officers have refused conduct site visits to disabled people who cannot personally visit the department's office for assessment, while others were unhappy that they were not receiving their welfare allowance.

Also present at the scene were Lunas state assemblyperson Azman Nasrudin and PKR legal bureau chief Latheefa Koya.
(MM) - Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has proclaimed friendship with members of a Malay non-government organisation (NGO) that were part of the Tiga Line secret society outlawed by his ministry earlier this year.

While detailing the government crackdown on underworld figures at a security briefing with community leaders in Ayer Keroh, Malacca last Saturday, the home minister reportedly asserted the 6,000-plus Malay members of some gangs should not be lumped in the same category.

"The 6,171 Malays, they are not real thugs (samseng), they were Pekida members and were part of the Tiga Line group, Gang 30, Gang 7 - these are festivities (kenduri-kendara) gangsters," Ahmad Zahid was quoted saying by news portal Malaysiakini, referring to members of NGO, Pertubuhan Kebajikan dan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia by its Malay acronym.

"I tell our Tiga Line friends, do what should be done," he reportedly added, based on a 20-minute audio recording of the speech.

Tiga Line was one of 49 secret societies the Home Ministry had named as banned in August in a crackdown on violent crimes following several shooting sprees nationwide.

According to the Malaysiakini report, Zahid said the gang was not malicious and only gathered during festivities and projects.

He also reportedly referred to Umno supreme council candidate Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim as the "biggest Tiga Line gangster" in his speech.

"I see here, the candidates here, all four of them are Tiga Line," the home minister was quoted saying, while Shahidan, a former Perlis mentri besar, was present in the room.

As home minister, Zahid's portfolio includes overseeing police operations.

He was also reported to have advocated a “shoot first” policy for the police at the same event, in dealing with suspected gang members in the wake of a violent crime spree that has resulted in, according to him, Malays making up the majority of the victims.

He reportedly said there was nothing wrong with arresting the over 40,000 known gangsters in the country, half of whom are Indians.

“What is the situation of robbery victims, murder victims during shootings? Most of them are our Malays. Most of them are our race,” he was quoted as saying.

“I think the best way is that we no longer compromise with them. There is no need to give them any more warning. If (we) get the evidence, (we) shoot first.”

Zahid is no stranger to controversy, having pushed successfully through the Dewan Rakyat last week an amendment to a security law that restored preventive detention powers to the police.

His latest remark, however, is seen to possibly top that.

Zahid was also reported to have ordered reporters who were in the audience not to report on his remarks, allegedly threatening to shut down their newspapers if the contents of his speech were published.

Chinese-language newspaper Oriental Daily, however, reported the next day on Zahid’s warning to the media after he made “sensitive remarks”, though it did not give details on his comments.

Zahid’s warning came days after he was reported to have gone on a tirade during a press conference against Malaysiakini for allegedly spinning his statements.

The news portal also claimed that their journalist on duty at the time was “harassed” by the minister at the end of the press conference.
