I'm trying to figure out if my PSU can take the strain of a 8800GTS G92 SLI setup.

Here's my spec:

CPU: AMD Opteron 170
Mobo: Gigabyte K8N-SLI
Ram: 2x 1GB Kingston Valueram (aiyo... I gotta upgrade this soon)
HDD: 3HDDs (160, 250 & 320GB)
Sound: Soundblaster Audigy ZX
GPU1: 8800GTS 512MB (G92)
GPU2: Currently none, thinking of putting a second 8800GTS here...
PSU: 480W Tagan Black Series (TG480-U01)

Kuala Lumpur, Sunday - Local Mac police were horrified to discover the remains of a once-pristine Strawberry iMac G3 lying in pieces in the peaceful neighbourhood of Taman Tun Dr. Ismail. The unit's one-time beauty-pageant-quality exterior lay strewn all over the floor of a cramped bedroom here. According to the Mac police, they were "...at a loss to explain this brutal mutilation of an innocent piece of hardware". An onlooker (who was later apprehended for further questioning) added, "It was scheduled to be junked. I think I can give it new life... AS A PC!" Naturally, the Mac police fainted on the spot and had to be dragged back unconscious to their service centre in nearby 1 Utama for tuneup.

The victim's corpse was strewn all over the place.

The one-time beauty queen's features were looking a bit old... she hadn't been keeping her botox appointments!

OK, enough of that

I think it's pretty obvious what I'm going to do... it would be a waste to throw the entire thing away just because the insides don't work...

I'm aware this particular project type has been done before, which ought to make it easier for me to complete my Project RMA

My initial assessement is that probability of completion is good... there's plenty of space within the iMac once you've taken out the CRT unit!!!

Anyway, I'll be posting a few pictures here now and then. Check back often, and wish me luck!!!

2007-03-18 5pm: Obtained non-functioning Strawberry iMac. Attempts to revive the iMac deemed futile. Besides, it's kinda outdated. Max 256MB RAM? 8MB Video RAM?? OS 9!?!?! Time for some chop-chop and give it a new lease on life...
2007-03-18 10pm: Complete disassembly and removal of unwanted components completed. Reassembly of iMac shell completed.
2007-03-26 12.30am: Hardware test underway with OS X. Graphics, LAN, DVD working. Sound not working yet. [PHOTOS]
2007-03-28 1.30am: Success! Sound is now fully functional! Bluetooth works, too. Excellent. Can't wait for Stage II.
2007-04-03 1.00am: 15" LCD separated from its shell. It's perfect! Pictures to follow (connecion too slow to upload now).

PDA+Phonepad vs Smartphone

A year ago, tech-loving consumers were faced with a choice between PDAs with some so-so phone capabilities (i.e. PDA phones), or phones with some so-so PDA capabilities (i.e. smartphones). Quite a simple choice really, all you'd need to do is decide how much you'd miss the keypad.

But now, the lines have been blurred even further.

2006's releases include some very impressive smartphones, and PDAs with integrated keypads (I'm talking 123, not QWERTY). Some examples of PDA+keypad combos that I'm eyeing are the O2 Stealth and Asus P525. Of course, as PDAs, they still command a price premium over their less-favored brothers, the Smartphones.

However, improvements in Smartphone software and design have resulted in impressive products like the Dopod S300 (which I'm also eyeing). Touchscreen aside, they offer almost the same capabilities as their PDA relatives at as little as half the cost (and a MUCH more attractive formfactor ).

So, what I'd like is to hear some user's (especially PDA+keypad users) opinions on:

a. Just how good/practical/stable/ready is the PDA+phonepad combo?
b. Just how long will smartphones remain relevant, now that PDAs have built-in keypads (remember, 123, not QWERTY)?

Enabling SB Audigy 2ZS on Vista x64 Beta 5384

Here's how I enabled my Sound Blaster 2 ZS on my Vista x64, running AMD Opteron:

Caveats:

a. The steps below are what I did. I don't know if you really need the XP 32 bit drivers first. It may be possible to do it with just the Vista beta and XP64 drivers. There may also be better ways. Please do update this thread if you find any!
b. The steps below are for Audigy 2 ZS only, NOT Audigy 2 ZS gamer, platinum (pro), or other models. There are existing drivers/workarounds for these other models.
c. The steps below are for AMD 64-bit processors. They have not been tested on an Intel processor based PC. It may or may not work, but you can use the drivers in the "i386" folder instead of the "AMD64" folder.
d. Do this at your own risk! Be sure to backup your PC!!! Whatever happens, it's your fault, not mine

Needed: Windows Vista Beta 2 Build 5384, WinRAR, Creative Audigy family Vista beta drivers, Creative Audigy family XP drivers, and Creative Audigy family XP64 drivers. All of these are available online for free and perfectly legal.

0. Use CompletePC backup to create a backup of your OS state in case everything is f'ed up!
1. Use WinRAR to unpack all the Creative drivers into separate folders. Rename the folders so you don't get confused which are for Vista, XP and XP64.
2. Goto Vista beta drivers folder/Drivers/Support/amd64/
3. Right click on "ctzapxx.exe" and select "run as administrator"
4. Install the driver, reboot Vista.
5. After reboot, there's no sound and sound icon on taskbar has a "X" on it. That's normal.
6. Repeat steps 2-4 with the Creative XP driver, but choose "overwrite existing shared Creative drivers", then reboot. After installation, you'll get a BSOD. Let Vista reboot on its own.
7. Repeat steps 2-4 with the Creative XP64 driver choose "overwrite existing shared Creative drivers". Reboot, and you should now have sound!

Optional:
8. Use control panel to change the sound quality. At the highest "studio quality" setting I get crackles and pops... Sound is ok at lower setting.

1. Corrected a couple of typos.
2. If you're using the 32-bit (a.k.a. x86) version of Vista, use the NGO modded drivers for Audigy, available from the NGO website. I've tested it on the x86 Vista, and it's useable (not perfect).
