Introduction to Marimo:

What is a Marimo?

Among the most peculiar and scientifically interesting oddities of the Icelandic nature are the lake balls, or marimo. These balls are made up of filamentous green algae (Aegagropila Linnaei). This growth form of the algae is known from only two lakes in the world today; Lake Myvatn in Iceland (where it is called kúluskítur), and Lake Akan in Japan (where it is known as Marimo). Similar growth forms also appear in the UK, Germany, and several other Northern Hemisphere countries. However, only in Lake Akan do marimo reach a perfectly round and formidable size and shape. Lake Akan is a highly protected area and the lake-balls are regarded as a national treasure.

Domesticated marimo balls are very easy to maintain and ideal for beginners. They can live with all types of fish, and are perfect for low-stocked and low-tech aquariums. No food or fertilizers are needed since they create their own food through photosynthesis. It’s okay to use fertilizer for other plants in the tank, which may promote faster growth.

Basic Marimo Care:

Water Requirements:

Marimo need to be kept in water, but ordinary tap water at room temperature (68 – 82° F) will suit them just fine. Replace the water every one or two weeks—more often during summer months and less often during winter. If you are keeping them outdoors and temperatures are regularly reaching 80° or more, you should bring them inside. If water is not squeezed from them every 7-10 days they will not float, and if necessary, you can store them in your refrigerator. (Do not put them in the freezer, however, as they are unlikely to survive.)

Marimo balls grow slowly: up to 5 mm per year, eventually reaching 2 to 5 inches in aquariums, or 8 to 12 inches in natural conditions. Wild marimos live in cold, dark waters where the waves slowly turn them to expose all sides to the light. Indoors they need to be kept in clean, cold water with low lighting. Every one to two weeks, change the water and gently rinse them to remove any accumulated debris. It’s fine to use tap water. The temperature should stay below 77°F (25°C). Place the balls in low indirect sunlight or low artificial light. Avoid direct sunlight, as it will burn and possibly kill them.

Cleaning the Tank:

When changing the water, you can help your Marimo maintain their elegant figures by lightly rinsing them off and gently tapping in the fuzzier edges. If you wish, you can also turn them over in their container from time to time. This will simulate the sort of tidal effects they typically encounter in the wild, which keep them smooth and round.

Because Aegagropila linnaei is algae, you can keep them in fish globes and aquariums with other creatures without ill effect. In fact, Marimo typically will out-compete other forms of algae for nutrients, helping keep your tank water clear!
