BEING blind in the right eye and able to see only shadows in the left has not stopped Chew Sui Teng from pursuing her ambition to be a teacher.

And she is now one step closer to realising it.

Sui Teng, 19, was one of the top students at St George’s Girls’ School in Jalan Macalister, Penang, with 5A+, 2As and 1B+ for the SPM 2014.

“My teacher advised me to apply to the teacher training institutes to realise my dream to be a teacher.

“I want to teach blind children so that they can also have a bright future.

“Only through education can you change your life,” she said after receiving her results at her school yesterday.

Sui Teng said life was hard as a visually impaired.

“Revision books are limited. We can’t buy them in bookstores like others.

“My secret of success is to stay focus in class, do my homework and study revision books in Braille which are available in my school,” she said.

Another student Neoh Xin Er, 18, who is blind in the right eye and having glaucoma on her left, scored 7A+, 1A and 1A- .

Izzatur Nadhrah Abdul Aziz, 18, who is fully blind, also did well with 2A+, 1A, 4A-, 1B+ and 1E.

Her father Abdul Aziz Abdul Razak, 45, collected her result on her behalf at the school.

Over at the Penang Chinese Girls High School, Jennifer Cheah Zhi Yee thanked her mother for being a stern disciplinarian.

“I was not allowed to use my handphone when the exam was around the corner,” said Jennifer, who obtained 8A+ and 4A.

Over at SMK Bukit Jambul, Anasofiah Ismail, Caryn Lim Myn Li, Lim Li-Cha, Muhamad Aiman Asyraf Annuar, Nurul Nazihah Zamri and Salman Alfarisi Nasir Khan each scored 9A+ and were among 62 students at the school who got straight As.

Caryn, whose sister Cavina is a journalist at The Star in Penang, hopes to become a dentist one day.

Their father Lim Seng Leong, who is a teacher at the school, said he was extremely glad with Caryn’s results.

“I’m so proud of her,” he added.

Truck drivers (Regulations)

Are msian truck divers heavily screened to ensure that they actually meet the minimum requirements by regulating authorities. However, I also understand that a lot of truck divers are under pressure by their employers to drive at high speeds and a similar share are pressured into carrying overweight loads. Some of them also work very long hours and practice unsafe driving practices.

I see a lot of these kemalangan yg menyedihkan (kena gills, perut terburai, mati terbakar hidup2) on msian highways and majority of them involve trucks and lories. So sad.
