Advice wanted: upgrade or replace?

Hi, I'm seeking advice as to whether or not it would be better to upgrade my existing 2yo laptop or replace it with a spiffier new one. I would use my notebook for general student work (spreadsheets, reports, presentations etc.), watching movies and some occasional gaming (particularly like football management/simcity/sims type games). Also carry it around while overseas for LAN dota gatherings.

My current lappy is a 15" Thinkpad R51:
Dothan 1.5GHz
768MB RAM
40GB HDD
Intel 855GME

Mostly because of games I feel like having something faster to use, so I've been thinking of either:
1. Upping my Thinkpad to its max 2GB of RAM and stick in a faster HDD (costs about RM1.2K and no wondering how to dispose of old comp); or
2. Picking up one of them dual-core units. Was considering the Toshiba A100, Compaq V3000z, Samsung R65 or perhaps ASUS F3J. (budget ~5k)

However, the current Core Duo lineup seems rather expensive to me, especially since if I choose to buy new, I defintely want a discrete graphics option that will be good for at least 2 years. However, based on past performance and current solidity, I also think my Thinkpad could easily run for another 2-3 years.

Advice requested from more experienced lowyat'ers

Questions for Dell 6400/640m owners

Hi, I've got some questions regarding the Dell Inspiron 640m and 6400. I'm considering these models but since I can't see and try them in a shop, I'd like to find out a few things from other owners' experiences.... I saw 150+page long thread on 6400 owners so it seems quite good but anyway...

On the 6400:
How solid is the keyboard, does it flex anywhere?
How hot does it get after a few hours of gaming? Does the keyboard get hot also?
How solidly is it built?
How is the build quality after a few months (hinges, any creaks)? Any parts that seem flimsy/breakable?
Is the colour kit for the whole unit or just the lid?
How long is the battery life with the Radeon X1400?
How does the screen compare to, say, the Sony VAIO FE or the MacBook?

On the 640m:
How solid is the keyboard, does it flex anywhere?
How hot does it get after a few hours of use? Does the keyboard get hot also?
How solidly is it built?
How is the build quality after a few months (hinges, any creaks)?
How easily does the paintwork scratch/rub away?

Thanks for any help/answers, I also hope Dell has an exhibition at the PC Fair so I can actually try banging on one
