Spec recomendation

Hi guys,

I am building a NAS/HTPC with a budget of around 1.2k for the rig excluding hdd and case(custom built).

It will be mostly a 24/7 torrent machine and file server for pics and stuff
But it must also be able to play 1080p h.264 files and youtube/flash games smoothly
Because it will spend most of it's time idle torrenting I need a spec that has a really really low idle power consumption

I found both Jetway NC98-525-LF and Asus AT5IONT-I to be perfect but had trouble find it locally.

I thought of another way is to underclock the CPU to lower power consumption, anyone know how to do that automatically?

So, I would like you guys to recommend a spec that satisfy the needs of the build.

I am going to build a HTPC/NAS/BT machine. So it will be running 24/7
It will be powered by Intel Atom D525 + ION2 with 2gb of ram
4 HDDs, 2 TB each

Also note that it will be plugged into a TV so I would like it to be a with a 10 foot interface.Eg. Boxee, MCE etc

Will definitely run two HDDs in Raid 1

I am currently standing on the wall with the choice of OS.
I am well verse in both Linux and Windows, managing several Linux servers myself.
So its either Ubuntu or Windows 7, but I still can't choose. So I need people to push me to either side, and why, preferably with a choice of software.

Hey, I need a new mouse after my last broke, and I am torn between the arc mouse, which looks cool and the logitech darkfield, which cost slightly more. However, if there is no need for such mouse please do tell.
It must comply to the following requirements

PDF generation

Hi, anyone got some pdf generation benchmarks using tcpdf, I would like to know them.
I added a PDF module to my php software for a customer's request to print invoices a few months back.
After plenty of optimizations on my side, using the TCPDF library, I was able to generate a semi complex invoice at 0.21 sec/page.
At 200+ pages of printing during month end, generation may take up to a min, which they think is quite slow, so do I.
I wonder if there a way to optimize it further without using JIT/memcache techniques, or that is the typical times...

Item relational system

I have a table in mysql of a inventory. Each may/may not have a few 1 level relation or links to other. When I retrieve an item, I need to know what item relates to it. Note, relations are one way or both ways.

I generally have an idea how to implement this, but I wanna see if other people will implement it diffrently

I am still working on how the UI will look like using comments from the "future users"

Example -
Picture a scenario where i am currently viewing the details of an item A(typical metadata such as size weight price etc). Then I need to know any item (Item B in this case) that relates to the current item A(user defined), clicking item B will bring me to the details of the item B which also displays a relation to item A.

When adding a relation, I will set that item A will have a relation with item B and links to A -> B and B -> A is established.

My method -
When adding a link the primary key of B is added to an array and saved in under item A. While, the primary key of A is added to an array and saved in under item B. Both arrays are saved as CSV/Json for storage.

OR Better yet, anyone can point me to the direction of a suggestion engine/method that does something similar.

apache user permissions etc

Hi, I am currently running a inhouse web app that requires file system access(for backup/restore) within the webserver folder aka /var/www however it is known that the same machine is also used as terminal.

I am running ubuntu. user1 is the default username

so it is wise to give ownership of /var/www to user1 and run apache as user1?

Function keys indicator

i just installed win 7 on my dell laptop, when i press the function keys such as volume up, they still work as expected but they no longer show any huge icons. Same goes for caps lock key.

I searched Dell's site for a fix but there is isn't one. Anyone can help?

Q: What is Cupcake, Donut, Éclair, Froyo, Gingerbread?
A: They are codenames for Android versions named after delicious pastry/desserts and in alphabetical order. Froyo – 2.2, Gingerbread - 2.3

Q: Why Android phones have a chin?
A: Only HTC’s phones have them, for me they do prevent scratches when placing the phone down

Q: If I buy a phone, can it upgrade to a higher version?
A: Some manufacturers will provide it, but if there is not one, you can always rely on xda-developers.com to provide one. So far, only HTC and Motorola are the best at providing upgrades.

A: Yes

A: This is hardware and software dependent. Currently HTC sense and Android 2.0 and above uses multi-touch.

Q:Is the screen really sensitive?
A:Other than HTC Tattoo, most of the phones use a capacitive touch screen, the same technology as the iPhone which also allows multi-touch.

Q: How does rooting works?
A: It essentially adds two files to the system folder (su and superuser.apk). It is just like installing a computer driver that provides direct access to the hardware.

Q: What benefits does rooting gives?
A: Quite a lot, some market apps depend on root.

A: Yes, Look for it in HTC's website, most phones uses OTA(over the air) updates, means it will automatically update if avalaible.

Q: What is a bootloader?
A: It is a piece of software that executes when you start the phone.

Q: What happens when a bootloader is locked, signed or encrypted?
A: You can't have a complete custom rom as you can't change the kernel

Q: So, why do people say I need to flash it?
A: Its like changing your phone's clothes and may gain abilities such as Root Access, Android Market, Cool themes and they are generally faster than the originals.

Q: What is flashing, it is dangerous?
A: It is not as dangerous as it used to be, there are now two to three layers of protection if something goes wrong. However there is still a chance that something will go wrong but that is like 1 in 100000 chance, if you followed the instructions correctly.

Q: How come I don’t have the Android Market?
A: Units from some countries such Malaysia, Vietnam are replaced SlideMe market, which is a inferior version the Android market. To get it refer below.

Q: What do I have to loose when flashing to a custom ROM?
A: A wipe is needed, means contacts, sms will be gone (you will need to backup and restore after flashing)
APN settings will not be inside, you will need to enter it yourself
When claiming warranty, you will need to flash it back which some people may consider a hassle.

Q: Is there anyway to disable 3G/HSDPA until required?
A: Yes, turn off mobile network under wireless settings in the settings, you can also force it to connect to GSM networks only.

Q: What is APN?
A: It is a set of settings that is used by the phone to connect to the Internet using 3G/HSPA via your telco (DiGi, Maxis, Celcom). Also need to make MMS work.

A: The vanilla Android does not have flash, but HTC’s Sense phones do have them but, very slow. Android 2.2 and above supports the real flash 10.1 beta

Q: Does it have a PDF reader?
A: Yes, comes with HTC’s phones or you can download Adobe's version from the market(2.1 and above)

Q: Does it have like a PC suite thingy?
A: Some manufacturer such as HTC may provide one, but you are better off syncing to the cloud and editing within Google Contacts/Calander.

Q: Will it connect to the internet when connected to a computer?
A: No, unlike WM, it does not do so. But you may set up a adhoc connection to your laptop.

Q: Does it have a backup software?
A: There are plenty on the market, most people are using Sprite Backup, My backup Pro, and backup for Root (Requires Root)

Q: Can android let us stored the sms/email in the sd card? (jajac)
A: Unfortunately, no. If you are looking for backups, most backup software will do that. If you do Gmail, email is actually not stored locally at all.

Q: Does the Android have a future?
A: It has the highest adoption rate of all platforms (since iPhone already saturated most markets).

Q: What games are avalaible?
A: There are lots of games including some fun ones like Labyrinth, Bonsai Blast etc. Selection not as wide as the App Store though, FPS and some 3d intensive games are still available but you will need the high end android devices to run.

Q: Is Android truly open?
A: No, there are some closed source parts, such as Google’s Apps

A: You will need to do a wipe in the recovery mode to fix it

laser VS ink jet

I am planing to print my own labels using pre-cut stickers. The text are squeezed till the point where 2mm of alignment issues would ruin it.
I have a old laser printer at home, I printed two samples on plain paper and compared them (using the paper cassette) I noticed they are not exactly the same. I wonder if the newer laser printers have this alignment issue or not.
From my experience, ink jets does not have that problem.

So, what is the combination of printers and toners/inks that has the lowest overall cost per page(including printer and maintainance)?

Lasers with re manufactured toners
Or
Ink Jets with CISS

I will be printing more than 4 times a week, and it will be all in black.
Note: It would be best if a trusted supplier is available.
