Spec recomendation

Hi guys,

I am building a NAS/HTPC with a budget of around 1.2k for the rig excluding hdd and case(custom built).

It will be mostly a 24/7 torrent machine and file server for pics and stuff
But it must also be able to play 1080p h.264 files and youtube/flash games smoothly
Because it will spend most of it's time idle torrenting I need a spec that has a really really low idle power consumption

I found both Jetway NC98-525-LF and Asus AT5IONT-I to be perfect but had trouble find it locally.

I thought of another way is to underclock the CPU to lower power consumption, anyone know how to do that automatically?

So, I would like you guys to recommend a spec that satisfy the needs of the build.

PS:Requires HDMI port with audio

Suggestions of OS

I am going to build a HTPC/NAS/BT machine. So it will be running 24/7
It will be powered by Intel Atom D525 + ION2 with 2gb of ram
4 HDDs, 2 TB each

Also note that it will be plugged into a TV so I would like it to be a with a 10 foot interface.Eg. Boxee, MCE etc
Uses:
Movies/TV shows from BT
Youtube
Web Browsing
BT itself
Will definitely run two HDDs in Raid 1

I am currently standing on the wall with the choice of OS.
I am well verse in both Linux and Windows, managing several Linux servers myself.
So its either Ubuntu or Windows 7, but I still can't choose. So I need people to push me to either side, and why, preferably with a choice of software.

I just got a new comp for business use, i am going to reformat it to the same version using the same key(because of the crapware inside slowing down), but I don't have the disc, I have a modified version of a MSDN disc. Does the key works with that? (Windows Starter)

Hey, I am a bit bored since I completed my last project, an advance search based inventory system. I could expand it but currently, I don't plan to do so.

Any ideas for a project?
Native or web based
Windows/Linux or cross platform(web based only)

If it has commercial value, then I will sell it to fund my studies. If not i will just open source it.

Any ideas?

Hey, I need a new mouse after my last broke, and I am torn between the arc mouse, which looks cool and the logitech darkfield, which cost slightly more. However, if there is no need for such mouse please do tell.
It must comply to the following requirements

A. Wireless
B. Full size (not notebook size)
C. High precision(high DPI)
D. Trackable on glossy surface

If possible give prices to the stuff as well.
PDF generation

Hi, anyone got some pdf generation benchmarks using tcpdf, I would like to know them.
I added a PDF module to my php software for a customer's request to print invoices a few months back.
After plenty of optimizations on my side, using the TCPDF library, I was able to generate a semi complex invoice at 0.21 sec/page.
At 200+ pages of printing during month end, generation may take up to a min, which they think is quite slow, so do I.
I wonder if there a way to optimize it further without using JIT/memcache techniques, or that is the typical times...

Item relational system

I have a table in mysql of a inventory. Each may/may not have a few 1 level relation or links to other. When I retrieve an item, I need to know what item relates to it. Note, relations are one way or both ways.

I generally have an idea how to implement this, but I wanna see if other people will implement it diffrently

EDITED

I am still working on how the UI will look like using comments from the "future users"

Example -
Picture a scenario where i am currently viewing the details of an item A(typical metadata such as size weight price etc). Then I need to know any item (Item B in this case) that relates to the current item A(user defined), clicking item B will bring me to the details of the item B which also displays a relation to item A.

When adding a relation, I will set that item A will have a relation with item B and links to A -> B and B -> A is established.

My method -
When adding a link the primary key of B is added to an array and saved in under item A. While, the primary key of A is added to an array and saved in under item B. Both arrays are saved as CSV/Json for storage.

OR Better yet, anyone can point me to the direction of a suggestion engine/method that does something similar.

Hi, I am currently running a inhouse web app that requires file system access(for backup/restore) within the webserver folder aka /var/www however it is known that the same machine is also used as terminal.

I am running ubuntu. user1 is the default username

so it is wise to give ownership of /var/www to user1 and run apache as user1?

Android FAQ And Tutorials

FAQ
Q: What is Android?
A: It is an open sourced mobile OS by Google

Q: What is the current version of Android?
A: 2.2 for most handsets, 2.3 rolling out over the next few months, with 3.0 codenamed Honeycomb out soon.

Q: What is Cupcake, Donut, Éclair, Froyo, Gingerbread?
A: They are codenames for Android versions named after delicious pastry/desserts and in alphabetical order. Froyo – 2.2, Gingerbread - 2.3

Q: Why Android phones have a chin?
A: Only HTC’s phones have them, for me they do prevent scratches when placing the phone down

Q: If I buy a phone, can it upgrade to a higher version?
A: Some manufacturers will provide it, but if there is not one, you can always rely on xda-developers.com to provide one. So far, only HTC and Motorola are the best at providing upgrades.

Q: What manufactures are on board this Android’s ship
A: Lots, Including HTC, Samsung, LG, Dell, Motorola, Sony Erricson, Acer and lots more to come.

Q: Does Android have Chinese input?
A: Google provides it’s infamous pinyin input. HTC’s IME have handwriting, pinyin, zhuyin, changjin and strokes. Not only that, there is always other IMEs that supports other languages such as Japanese, Greek etc.

Q: How is the web browser?
A: In terms of technology, they support nearly the same thing, both are equally fast in terms on general use the same hardware

Q:Copy & Paste?
A:Yes, system wide, as long there is a text box for text input

Q: Does Android supports multi-tasking?
A: Yes

Q: Where is the task manager?
A: There is no official task manager, as Android manages phone resources “auto-magically”. However, there are task managers in Adroid Market.

Q: How come I can’t receive MMS/ Connect to 3G / Edge
A: Means two things, wrong APN settings or you din’t activate the mobile network. For the APN settings, refer to your telco’s website, there should be a tutorial to tell you how to connect.

Q: What is this “Google Experience”
A: Just means it uses the vanilla Android, no “crap”.

Q: What is HTC Sense?
A: UI layer from HTC, just like Touch Flo for WinMo. Concentrates on integration between people, software apps, and social networks.

Q: What is Moto Blur?
A: Another UI layer from Motorola, it sucks, period.

Q: What is Nandroid?
A: A full backup (I really mean every freaking thing) software that is built in to the recovery image

Q: What is recovery mode?
A: A alternative mode to the normal OS, can be accessed by holding the HOME and POWER button together while turning ON

Q: Does Android/Hardware support kinetic scrolling, animations?
A: Yes

Q: Does Android/Hardware support multi-touch?
A: This is hardware and software dependent. Currently HTC sense and Android 2.0 and above uses multi-touch.

Q:Is the screen really sensitive?
A:Other than HTC Tattoo, most of the phones use a capacitive touch screen, the same technology as the iPhone which also allows multi-touch.

Q: How does rooting works?
A: It essentially adds two files to the system folder (su and superuser.apk). It is just like installing a computer driver that provides direct access to the hardware.

Q: What benefits does rooting gives?
A: Quite a lot, some market apps depend on root.
Currently rooting gives you the following:
Bluetooth File Transfer(OBEX)
Put apps folder on SD card (app2SD)
Full Backup
Full control over the phone

Q: What is the risk of rooting?
A: Essentially, zero, a hard reset will bring it back to it's previous state.

Q: What is a ROM?
A: A rom is an image, kinda like a photo that contains the necessary data to run phone. Also referred to as Firmware or OS

Q: Is there official ROM updates like Nokia or Iphone(HTC phones)?
A: Yes, Look for it in HTC's website, most phones uses OTA(over the air) updates, means it will automatically update if avalaible.

Q: What is a bootloader?
A: It is a piece of software that executes when you start the phone.

Q: What happens when a bootloader is locked, signed or encrypted?
A: You can't have a complete custom rom as you can't change the kernel

Q: So, why do people say I need to flash it?
A: Its like changing your phone's clothes and may gain abilities such as Root Access, Android Market, Cool themes and they are generally faster than the originals.

Q: What is flashing, it is dangerous?
A: It is not as dangerous as it used to be, there are now two to three layers of protection if something goes wrong. However there is still a chance that something will go wrong but that is like 1 in 100000 chance, if you followed the instructions correctly.

Q: How come I don’t have the Android Market?
A: Units from some countries such Malaysia, Vietnam are replaced SlideMe market, which is a inferior version the Android market. Also need to make MMS work.

Q: What are the APN settings?
A: APN settings for Maxis, Digi and Celcom are available below

Q: So, how do I get Android Market?
A: The best way is to just flash to a custom Rom that contains Android Market.

Q: How come my Android Market only have free apps?
A: Install market-enabler(Google it)

Q: How do I buy from Market and how do I pay for it?
A: You will need a Google Checkout Account that links to your credit card

Q: I got market, how come I can’t download anything
A: Market uses port 5228 to communicate, make sure that the port is not blocked

Q: Is there any GPS software for android?
A: So far there are a few, Papago X5, Ndrive, Co-pilot, Sygic, and Google Navigation. Currently MFM(malfreemaps) or MSM(malsing maps) have Papago X5 maps only. Sygic and Google do have maps for Malaysia, but they are not as complete as MFM or MSM’s maps.

Q: Does PapagoX5 works with MFM maps?
A: Yes, get the X5 version and paste it in the "maps" directory in the SD card

Q: How much does PapagoX5 cost?
A: Online shops sells for 2280 NTD or RM 200+ Rumored to cost around RM 150+ locally.

Q: Does PapagoX5 supports android 2.1?
A: Yes only with the x5.1 patch and new data files

Q: Where can I download PapagoX5 SEA?
A: You can download them at the following links, you will need a unlock code to use it.
http://dl2.papago.com.tw/download/Papago/A...90818_MY+SG.zip
http://www.papago.com.tw/andsea/PAPAGO_SEA_090717.apk

Q: No Garmin?
A: Garmin said they are working on it, no release date though. However do note that garmin are releasing phones with them, it is unlikely they will release as a software package.

Q: There is no file manager, where can I get it?
A: I would recommend the Astro File manager from Android Market

Q: Does it support Exchange/ ActiveSync / Outlook?
A: HTC sense does have support for it, official support comes in version 2.0 and above

Q: Does it supports MS Office?
A: Quickoffice that comes with HTC’s phone does a great job viewing them. For editing and other features, check the Market

Q: Does it have Adobe Flash?
A: The vanilla Android does not have flash, but HTC’s Sense phones do have them but, very slow. Android 2.2 and above supports the real flash 10.1 beta

Q: Does it have a PDF reader?
A: Yes, comes with HTC’s phones or you can download Adobe's version from the market(2.1 and above)

Q: Does it have like a PC suite thingy?
A: Some manufacturer such as HTC may provide one, but you are better off syncing to the cloud and editing within Google Contacts/Calander.

Q: Will it connect to the internet when connected to a computer?
A: No, unlike WM, it does not do so. But you may set up a adhoc connection to your laptop.

Q: Does it have a backup software?
A: There are plenty on the market, most people are using Sprite Backup, My backup Pro, and backup for Root (Requires Root)

Q: Can android let us stored the sms/email in the sd card? (jajac)
A: Unfortunately, no. If you are looking for backups, most backup software will do that. If you do Gmail, email is actually not stored locally at all.

Q: Does the Android have a future?
A: It has the highest adoption rate of all platforms (since iPhone already saturated most markets).

Q: What games are avalaible?
A: There are lots of games including some fun ones like Labyrinth, Bonsai Blast etc. Selection not as wide as the App Store though, FPS and some 3d intensive games are still available but you will need the high end android devices to run.

Q: Is Android truly open?
A: No, there are some closed source parts, such as Google’s Apps

Q: Where can I download the SDK
A: developers.android.com

Q: Is Rooting/Flashing permanent?
A: No, it is possible to return to its original state by flashing the original rom (Obtainable from manufacturer’s site).

Q: If I restored it, is it detectable during warranty claims?
A: Just like the iPhone, it is quite impossible, so far, flashing/ rooting DOES NOT void the warranty.

Q: Does Android have limitations compared to other OS?
A:
Can’t send or receive files (2.0 and below)
App choices not as good as Apple’s App Store

Q: What is the "Class" thing on micro SD cards?
A: It indicates the data transfer speed of the card, the higher the better.

Q: So, which micro SD card class should I get?
A: Always get the highest class available (class 8), the difference between classes is noticeable.

Q: I just installed Modaco / custom roms, some of my applications how can't start and I have to force close, how can I fix this?
A: You will need to do a wipe in the recovery mode to fix it

MISC Questions

Q: I have a WinMo phone, can it run android?
A: Technically yes, practically no. Personally i think google just made it a bit confusing, but if you understand how the system works it's quite simple.

You can put any MP3 into as your ringtone by playing the music in the Music players this is one of the most simplest way.

There are several all out there that helps set and modify MP3 as ringtone, i personally like Ringdroid, it allows you to choose the mp3 and set it as a ringtone or notification sound at the end.

All above are by using another application to augment the process of putting the MP3 as a ringtone. The most simplest way is by organizing your folders in your SDcard.

This is how i set my folders.

SDcard > Media > Audio > Ringtones
SDcard > Media > Audio > Alarms
SDcard > Media > Audio > Notification
SDcard > Media > Audio > Music

If you set up your folder like above, once you reboot your phone, the OS will automatically set all the mp3 in Ringtones as an option when you go to menu.
All the mp3 in Alarm folder will be selectable when you want to choose a Alarm tone.
And all the mp3 in the notification folder will be able to be used in any app when you try to set a notification tone.

Another tip : If you guys are annoyed that all your mp3 even the one from GPS navigation software comes up in your music playes, or all the pictures come up in the album app, then there is a simple way to remove it.

QUOTE
There’s a common Android problem of unwanted media files appearing in the song list of music players. This annoyingly causes your favorite songs to get mixed in with audio files associated with other apps, such as voice files for a GPS navigation app.
There’s a simple solution for this issue. We’ve already covered how you can hide certain files by changing a folder name to start with a dot, but you run the risk of causing problems with the app that’s linked to those files. Instead, there’s a similar solution: create a “.nomedia” file.
Here’s an easy trick that should only take a couple of minutes to keep unwanted audio files from popping up.
1. On your computer, open Notepad or any other text editor
2. Save the blank file as “.nomedia”
Make sure that the Save as type is set as “All Files” instead of “Text documents”
3. Copy that file to the folder on your SD card containing audio files you don’t want to show up.
(Example: If you want to block CoPilot sound files from coming up, place the .nomedia file in the sdcard/copilot folder)
4. Reboot your phone and the files should no longer be viewable
This same trick works for folders containing images or videos that you don’t want to appear in the Gallery app. The files will still be accessible from your original app or an explorer like Astro or Linda, but you’ll finally be able to stop hearing “Turn left” announcements after a great song.

Taken from : http://androinica.com/2009/08/28/how-to-hi...-media-players/

Appendix

APN Settings

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Digi
1. How well does the "cross platformness" (ability to run on diffrent platforms without much editing) work?

Or can you guys suggest an alternative?
Requirements:
Cross platform (mainly Linux and Windows)
Powerful
Easy to develop
More or less compatible with what I know and what it currently runs on (web based software, PHP, javascript etc)
Fast

laser VS ink jet

I am planing to print my own labels using pre-cut stickers. The text are squeezed till the point where 2mm of alignment issues would ruin it.
I have a old laser printer at home, I printed two samples on plain paper and compared them (using the paper cassette) I noticed they are not exactly the same. I wonder if the newer laser printers have this alignment issue or not.
From my experience, ink jets does not have that problem.

So, what is the combination of printers and toners/inks that has the lowest overall cost per page(including printer and maintainance)?

Lasers with re manufactured toners
Or
Ink Jets with CISS

I will be printing more than 4 times a week, and it will be all in black.
Note: It would be best if a trusted supplier is available.
