Ukraine strikes Moscow in biggest drone attack on

Ukraine strikes Moscow in biggest drone attack on Russian capital

Summary

At least 91 drones downed around Moscow
One killed, at least three injured
Flights suspended at Moscow's airports
Biggest Ukrainian drone attack on Moscow
At least 337 drones downed over Russia

MOSCOW, March 11 (Reuters) - Ukraine launched its biggest drone attack on the Russian capital on Tuesday with at least 91 drones targeting Moscow, killing at least one person, sparking fires, closing airports and forcing dozens of flights to be diverted, Russian officials said. A total of 337 Ukrainian drones were downed over Russia, including 91 over the Moscow region and 126 over the Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces have been pulling back, the defence ministry said.

The massive dawn drone attack unfurled just as a team of Ukrainian officials prepare to meet a U.S. team in Saudi Arabia to seek grounds for possible peace talks in the three-year-old war, and as Russian forces try to encircle thousands of Ukrainian soldiers in the western Russian region of Kursk.
As rush hour built, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said air defences were still repelling attacks on the city, which along with the surrounding region has a population of at least 21 million and is one of the biggest metropolitan areas in Europe.

"The most massive attack of enemy UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) on Moscow has been repelled," Sobyanin said in a post on Telegram.
Moscow Region Governor Andrei Vorobyov said at least one person was killed and three injured, and he posted a picture of a wrecked apartment with its windows blown out.
Vorobyov said that some residents were forced to evacuate a multi-storey building in the Ramenskoye district of the Moscow region, about 50 km (31 miles) southeast of the Kremlin.
There was no sign of panic in Moscow, commuters went to work as normal in central Moscow.
Russia's aviation watchdog said flights were suspended at all four of Moscow's airports to ensure air safety after the attacks. Two other airports, in the Yaroslavl and Nizhny Novgorod regions, both east of Moscow, were also closed.

Though U.S. President Donald Trump says he wants to deliver peace in Ukraine, the war is heating up on the battlefield with a major Russian spring offensive in Kursk and a series of Ukrainian drone attacks deep into Russia.
Russia has developed a myriad of electronic "umbrellas" over Moscow and over key installations, with additional advanced internal layers over strategic buildings, and a complex web of air defences to shoot down the drones before they reach the Kremlin in the heart of the capital.
Kyiv, itself the target of repeated mass drone strikes from Russian forces, has tried to strike back against its vastly larger eastern neighbour with repeated drone strikes against oil refineries, airfields and even Russian strategic early-warning radar stations.

DRONE WAR
The war, the biggest in Europe since World War Two, has combined grinding World War One style attrition trench and artillery warfare with the major innovation of drones. Moscow and Kyiv have both sought to buy and develop new drones, deploy them in innovative ways, and seek new ways to destroy them - from using farmers' shotguns to advanced electronic jamming systems.
Both sides have turned cheap commercial drones into deadly weapons while ramping up their own production.
Soldiers on both sides have reported a visceral fear of drones - and both sides have used macabre video footage of fatal drone strikes in their propaganda, with soldiers shown being blown apart in toilets or running from burning vehicles. Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has sought to insulate Moscow from the rigours of the war, has called Ukrainian drone attacks that target civilian infrastructure such as nuclear power plants "terrorism" and has vowed a response. Moscow, by far Russia's richest city, has boomed during the war, buoyed by the biggest defence spending splurge since the Cold War.

Guy Faulconbridge

Thomson Reuters
KK Mart Lagi

My Webpage

KK Mart freezes business with ham sandwich supplier

The convenience store chain also says the supplier, Shake and Bake Café, was not authorised to use its logo on the pre-packed sandwich packaging. “As a point of information, only 16 KK Concept Stores carry this product,” it said, referring to the type of outlet at the university’s campus.

This comes after concerns were raised about the use of the halal logo on the pre-packed sandwiches.

Two KK Mart Concept Stores at UM have since been shut down.

KK Mart also said it had issued a letter of demand on Jan 10 to the supplier through its legal team, David Gurupatham & Koay (Advocates & Solicitors), and filed a police report on Jan 11.

“Shake And Bake Café Sdn Bhd provided a halal certificate for the chicken ham and cheese layers for our reference.

“Shake and Bake Café was not authorised to use the ‘KK Super Mart’ logo on the sandwich packaging. The labelling was done by Shake And Bake Café,” it said.

KK Mart said it was aware of the raid conducted last Friday on the supplier’s factory by the Islamic development department (Jakim) and the domestic trade and cost of living ministry. It expressed its readiness to fully cooperate with the authorities.

“To safeguard the trust and safety of our customers, full cooperation will be provided to ensure strict action is taken against any party that undermines the confidence and well-being of our customers,” it said.

“KK Super Mart remains committed to maintaining the highest standards in delivering quality and ensuring the integrity of our products.

“The company also takes such matters seriously and continuously implements measures to prevent such incidents from recurring in the future.”

Pre-packed sandwich, supplier not halal-certified, says Jakim

Separately, Jakim confirmed that the sandwich in question, along with the company manufacturing it, does not have a halal certification.

“Therefore, the company’s act of printing the Malaysian halal logo on the product label constitutes a violation under the Trade Descriptions Act 2011, specifically the Trade Descriptions (Certification and Marking of Halal) Order 2011,” it said in a statement on Facebook.

“Legal action has already been taken by the domestic trade and cost of living ministry.”

Pahang Gov going to sue Environmentalist

https://www.malaymail.com/news/malaysia/202...ate-log/2040705

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 10 — The Pahang government has threatened to file a defamation suit against environmentalist Datin Shariffa Sabrina Syed Akil if she fails to apologise publicly for several statements critical of the state’s logging policy, which it deemed to be libellous.

Sabrina was also asked to pay RM1 million in damages for statements the Barisan Nasional administration claimed to have tarnished its reputation.

Several of the incriminating statements, such as accusations that the floods in the state were caused by excessive logging, were said to have been made on social media and eventually given press coverage. The Pahang government argued that the statements were defamatory and had brought disrepute to its integrity.

“It is clear that the defamatory statements (made by Shariffa) are false and unfounded. As a result of those published statements, our client (the Pahang government) has received negative reactions from the public, at the same time ruining the reputation and smearing the good name of our client,” the letter said.

“In addition, the irresponsible behaviour (of Shariffa) with the statements she has caused prejudiced (against) our client whereby the public thinks our client is a government that lies, has no integrity and is irresponsible.”

The letter of demand was handed over by the firm Hidayah Ishak and Partners, which Shariffa posted on her Instagram account this morning.

The president of environmental group Pertubuhan Pelindung Khazanah Alam Malaysia (Peka) has been given two weeks to issue an “unconditional apology”, failing which a defamation suit will be filed against her.

Shariffa was said to have made the defamatory statements in two posts published on her personal Facebook account dated December 29 and 30, 2021, as well as during an interview with Sinar Harian on January 12 this year.

In one of the three statements, the activist suggested that corruption within the state forestry authorities was rife, and that power abuse had enabled companies linked to the “royalties” to log indiscriminately.

Shariffa was said to have blamed the recurrent floods in the state on the logging industry. Pahang is known as one of several flood-prone states.

Responding to the demand, Shariffa told Malaysiakini she was shocked and outraged.

“How can they demand an apology from me merely for raising issues of concern,” she was quoted as saying.

“The environment and indiscriminate logging are issues that plague our country. The state government should in fact be working together with me and other stakeholders or activists in attempting to defend our jungles and natural resources,” she added.

The activist alleged the legal action was an attempt to intimidate her and silence critics.

Her lawyers are expected to respond to the demand soon, Malaysiakini reported.

This resulted in lower profit margins for egg producers.

He said corn prices, meanwhile, increased by 15.2% to RM1,100 a tonne in November compared with RM955 a tonne in April.

Soybeans also went up by 9.4% to RM2,100 a tonne in November compared with RM1,920 in April, with the prices determined by the global market.

Kiandee said the ministry is seeking short-term intervention measures and holding discussions with animal feed producers to find the best solution.

Feudal Mindset of Malaysians

TLDR :

Problem#1 - We are 'in awe' with those with titles. Read: bootlicking
Problem#2 - Mahathirism - "melayu malas, cina kaya"?
Problem#3 - Education - If top Academics don't change, education wont either. Banyak yg 'cari makan'

Don't agree with points above? Read The myth of the lazy native

The persistence of feudalism as the root of our problems
Sharifah Munirah Alatas -October 18, 2020 7:30 AM

“Within Malay society there developed two contradictory value systems, the one stressing co-operation, gotong-royong, usaha (labour), and conformity; the other stressing courage, power … absolute loyalty to the ruler and pillage. The former value system was to be found among the agrarian subjugated section of Malay society. The latter value system was upheld by the rulers and their courts, their dependents and hirelings.”

The above is a quote from an academic paper “Feudalism in Malaysian society: A study in historical continuity” by Syed Hussein Alatas, published in 1968.

Many Malaysian reformers and advocates for social and political change know of him as an academic, former vice-chancellor and a founder of Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia. They are aware of his analyses of corruption and critique of unethical leadership.

However, very few have made the effort to read the details and meticulously apply his analysis to current problems. Excuses abound such as there is no time to read “twenty pages of heavy stuff”. Another concocted myth is that his writings do not address “aspirasi akar umbi” or the bread and butter issues.

Contrary to such beliefs, Alatas is very relevant as an international scholar and a Malaysian intellectual. He presented complicated concepts in simple, short and crisp sentences. His writings on corruption are relevant to the bread and butter issues we lament about. Most of his writings focus on the machinations of elite corruption. He has highlighted how arrogant, unethical leadership has manipulated history to impose their neo-feudalistic agenda to control the masses.

Servility towards people with titles

Our leaders often refer to classical Malay texts such as Tajus Salatin (1603) which touches upon humanistic values and ethical principles of governance. They invoke these texts to provide a historical framework for ethical Malay leadership. In the process, they try to elevate their own moral position as leaders. As a result, the masses are often impressed with their knowledge of history.

Syed Hussein Alatas was a pioneer in Malay sociology.
However, current leaders also uphold many of the feudal traits mentioned in it. Some of these are the servile attitude towards people with titles, a lack of respect for the rule of law, an emphasis on extravagant and opulent lifestyle, an indifference to social justice and the acceptance of unfair privileges for those in positions of power.

Alatas’s writings are relevant because they highlight these historical excesses. He has emphasised how these values are prevalent today and have contributed to the further division of our pluralistic society. It is no surprise therefore, that leaders continue to silence his scholarship, in order to project individual political agendas.

Mahathir’s mental gymnastics

A good example of such mental gymnastics is former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s decades-long diatribe against the “lazy Malays” and his sarcastic comments about the Chinese being “a wealthy lot”. To counter such denigrating images of the Malays, Chinese and other races in Malaysia, it is time for a mass reading of “Mitos peribumi malas” (The myth of the lazy native) and “Intelektual masyarakat membangun” (Intellectuals in developing societies).

Both books address how and why racist and bigoted narratives persist within our leadership circles. In the process, we may gain more insight into the causes for the current political shenanigans. We may also realise that we may never solve our problems if we persist in electing morally-bankrupt politicians.

Most societies in the developed world would not ignore this request to read. Both books should be required texts in all our university undergraduate programmes. Social science and humanities lecturers should make these required readings for courses on modernisation, ethics, morality, logic, social development and climate change.

Since our independence, Mahathir’s “Dilema Melayu” (Malay dilemma) and Senu Abdul Rahman’s “Revolusi mental” (Mental revolution) have been quoted a lot. Malaysians thought they would find answers to the political mess we are in today. Yet, as the decades proceed, we find ourselves deeper in crisis. Part of the blame should be directed at our academics.

A vacuum in academia

Although all our public universities have social science faculties, we have been struggling for decades to produce social scientists with research and pedagogical contributions that are relevant to society. We have produced professors, well-read lecturers and intelligent academics who publish in journals and comment in the media.

But we have also produced too many who are propped up for their paper qualifications and administrative positions. They sit comfortably without any concern that their contributions have not been relevant for nation building and national progress. We desperately need social scientists who can decipher problems, apply historical data and critically arrive at solutions to our current socio-political dilemmas.

Many in Malaysia regard Alatas as a pioneer in the study of Malay feudalism and the neo-feudalistic characteristics of our political elite. Our culture of entitlement, elitism, abuse of power and corruption is grounded in our neo-feudalistic outlook. University lecturers, by and large, agree with this line of thinking, yet concrete scholarly works on the topic by Malaysian academics are few and far between.

In recent years, more activists are discussing feudalism and writing about it in social and mainstream media. However, it is necessary for our universities to institutionalise such trends by incorporating these themes into social science courses. Seminars, conferences and department forums are also necessary.

However, it will not become a movement until the issue is given due academic focus, pushed by academics and public intellectuals. The first step to solving our socio-political crisis is recognising that we have a systemic problem. Universities and academics should seize the opportunity if there is sincerity in the fight. To remain quiet is a grotesque abdication of academic responsibility.

The views expressed are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect those of FMT.

This will in turn lead to greater value creation for the current shareholders of UEM Sunrise and EcoWorld going forward," it added.

UEM said post-merger, the enlarged UEM Sunrise will focus on property developments in Malaysia as well as planned developments on lands it owns outside of Malaysia.

"This will allow the enlarged UEM Sunrise group to stay focused on property developments within Malaysia," it added.

Upon completion of the proposed merger, EcoWorld will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of UEM Sunrise and will be delisted.

UEM also proposed for UEM Sunrise to be led by a chairman who currently sits on its board of directors.

“We envisage that the composition of the Board of Directors and key management of the enlarged UEM Sunrise will be determined by an Integration Committee to be formed, which will comprise representatives from UEM Sunrise and EcoWorld,” it said.

The Integration Committee will be co-chaired by the respective Chairmen of UEM Sunrise and EcoWorld, according to the statement.

More to come
