After Moon landing, India eyes the Sun

NEW DELHI (AFP): Days after becoming the first nation to land a craft near the Moon's largely unexplored south pole, India's space agency said on Monday it will launch a satellite to survey the Sun.

"The launch of Aditya-L1, the first space-based Indian observatory to study the Sun, is scheduled for September 2," the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Aditya, meaning "sun" in Hindi, will be fired into a halo orbit in a region of space about 1.5 million kilometres (930,000 miles) from Earth, providing the craft with a continuous clear view of the Sun.

"This will provide a greater advantage of observing the solar activities and its effect on space weather in real time," ISRO said.

The spacecraft will be carrying seven payloads to observe the Sun's outermost layers -- known as the photosphere and chromosphere -- including by using electromagnetic and particle field detectors.

Among several objectives, it will study the drivers for space weather, including to better understand the dynamics of solar wind.

While NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) have previously placed orbiters to study the Sun, it will be the first such mission for India.

The unmanned Chandrayaan-3 -- "Mooncraft" in Sanskrit -- touched down on the lunar surface last week, making India only the fourth country behind the United States, Russia and China to land successfully on the Moon.

That marked the latest milestone in India's ambitious but cut-price space programme, sparking celebrations across the world's most populous country.

India has a comparatively low-budget space programme but one that has grown considerably in size and momentum since it first sent a probe to orbit the Moon in 2008.

Experts say India can keep costs low by copying and adapting existing technology, and thanks to an abundance of highly skilled engineers who earn a fraction of the wages of their foreign counterparts.

In 2014, India became the first Asian nation to put a craft into orbit around Mars and it is slated to launch a three-day crewed mission into the Earth's orbit by next year.

It also plans a joint mission with Japan to send another probe to the Moon by 2025 and an orbital mission to Venus within the next two years. - AFP

The latest one, the work of one roast meat restaurant in Johor Bahru, appears to be chicken rice topped with Milo powder.

The request, which might have been a mistake
On Tuesday, Dec. 27, Kang Bee Hong restaurant shared on its Facebook a special GrabFood order it received on the day.

Based on the post, the restaurant received an order for roasted chicken rice and milo dinosaur.

For their milo dinosaur, the customer made a woeful plea for copious amounts of Milo powder after what seemed to be a lonely Christmas day.

However, instead of putting their request under the "Milo dinosaur" item, the customer apparently mistakenly put the note under the roasted chicken rice item.

The customer's seemingly pitiful request read:

"On Christmas day, even my family members failed to give me a call. I am heartbroken. I really like lots and lots of Milo powder. Can y'all please add Milo powder to the max? So much powder that the world destructs, so much so that we question life itself, so much so that we start to wonder if you and I are still sane, but not so much that you get fired. Thank you."

The outcome
"We have tried our best to fulfil the customer's request", the restaurant joked in the caption of the post.

They then backed up their claim with a photo of what the order looked like.

The staff also topped it off with a hand-drawn Santa Claus along with a Christmas greeting on the lid of the takeaway box.

"No matter how much you love someone or something, if it appears in the wrong place, it will be torture too~~~", one comment read, suggesting that restaurant staff knew what they were doing and had put the order together as a joke.

Internet users play along
The restaurant's Facebook gag has since gathered 7,600 shares, 5,100 reactions and 1,400 comments.

Entertained users played along in the comments section of the post.

One user said the food combination has indeed made her question life itself.

"I am questioning my life for sure."

Another suggested that the restaurant should have went a step further.

"Might as well take the cup of Milo and pour it into the rice... then it will be perfect. Will definitely make you question your existence."

One shared that the concept was nothing new to him.

"Ah memories, I have indeed had 'Milo fried rice'. When I was young, and my parents weren't around, I would fry Milo with rice and eat that."

One user took a guess at what the meal might taste like.

"Sweet and savoury, well-balanced."

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he managed to cancel an order for a brand new range-topping Mercedes Benz S600 by the previous administration.

Anwar also confirmed that the order was made by "the former prime minister".

He seemed content using a Toyota Camry for his work and other engagements.

"The Mercedes did not come. I'll use this (Toyota Camry), it's okay, right? Any car that is available.

"Actually, the Mercedes Benz was ordered by the former prime minister".

"When I checked, I found out that the order could be cancelled and we managed to do it," he told reporters before leaving the PKR headquarters here today.

Earlier, Anwar, who is also Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman and PKR president, chaired a PH presidential council meeting.

Yesterday, Anwar shared on social media that he had declined an opportunity to use an ultra-luxurious Mercedes Benz S600 that was acquired before he took office.

Anwar was reported as saying he made the decision because he did not want additional expenditure to be incurred for him.

Apple is being more deliberate than ever as it decides who it will hire, according to a recent interview with CEO Tim Cook.

CBS News published a few comments from Apple CEO Tim Cook ahead of a full interview with him on Tuesday, November 15. In particular, the company has chosen to slow down its hiring process.

"What we're doing as a consequence of being in this period is we're being very deliberate on our hiring," Cook told CBS Mornings. "That means we're continuing to hire, but not everywhere in the company are we hiring."

"We think you invest your way to it," he continued, saying that Apple is investing for the long term and doesn't believe "you can save your way to prosperity."

Apple requires employees to work in the office three days a week, as Cook noted during a conversation about remote work.

"We make product, and you have to hold product. You collaborate with one another because we believe that one plus one equals three. So that takes the serendipity of running into people, and bouncing ideas off, and caring enough to advance your idea through somebody else because you know that'll make it a bigger idea," Cook said.

However, he said the company's offices are "a ghost town" on Fridays.

New iPhone 14 features
Cook will share more commentary in the full interview on Tuesday, including some of the newest features that have arrived on the iPhone 14 lineup.

A couple of new features include Crash Detection and Emergency SOS via Satellite. As the name implies, iPhone 14 models, Apple Watch Series 8, and Apple Watch Ultra can detect car crashes.

It uses the device's high dynamic range gyroscope, accelerometer, GPS, barometer, and microphone. Using that data, the device then uses complex algorithms to detect when a serious car crash has occurred.

Emergency SOS via Satellite helps Apple users contact emergency services outside the range of Wi-Fi and cellular networks. It uses Globalstar's network of satellites, and is expected to roll out with an iOS update soon.

Meta will begin laying off employees on Wednesday

(Reuters) -Meta Platforms Inc will begin laying off employees on Wednesday morning, Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg told hundreds of executives on Tuesday, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Zuckerberg appeared downcast in Tuesday's meeting and said he was accountable for the company's missteps and his overoptimism about growth had led to overstaffing, the report added, citing people familiar with the matter.

He described broad cuts and specifically mentioned the recruiting and business teams as among those facing layoffs, the report said, adding an internal announcement of the company's layoff plans is expected around 6 a.m. Eastern time on Wednesday.

The specific employees losing their jobs will be informed over the course of the morning, the report said.

Meta's head of human resources, Lori Goler, said employees who lose their jobs will be provided with at least four months of salary as severance, the WSJ reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

Meta reported more than 87,000 employees at the end of September.

The company declined to comment on the report.
