Changing career from non IT to IT

Hi guys, need your advice and guidance. I am at the crossroad of my career and need to make a very crucial decision on my career path. I am in my early 30s and have a degree in Business Admin, been in HR line for almost 5 years....and after all this years, I realized that this is not what I really want to do. I want to be a technical guy and I do really enjoy doing technical stuffs involving computers (Basic computer skills). Now I am seriously considering to switch to IT field. I have zero knowledge in IT, but I am willing to start from scratch. I am not going back to college again to obtain IT diploma or degree. I am thinking about obtaining professional certificate and try to apply for IT jobs. Is this workable? and I know there is a lot of professional certificates being offered out there but I am clueless about those and I need some IT professional's advice here. What sort of certificates can be obtained? I heard IT security has huge demand now days.....Kindly advice...
