USB drive problem

yesterday i encountered a USB drive problem where its detected by kernel, but the logical device file (/dev/sd??) wasn't appear neither dmesg nor /var/log/messages. lsusb command showing the drive is detected on address 0008:XXXX.

Question:

- how to tell the system to create logical device file based on the detected address? devlable command? force reload of usb module? i can't reboot the server since its production server.

- im from unix background. appreciate if anybody could guide me if there is any similar command to devfsadm(solaris), ioscan, insf (hpux) to detect/create device file in linux?
