Marantz PM7200 Repair

Following my recent Amplifier Restorations posts (Arcam Alpha & NAD 3020) comes this Marantz PM7200.

The owner complained that the amp lost one channel and then the other and lastly it refused to come out of protection mode. Was worried that the processor had issues but initial checks showed that the preamp, tone and volume circuitry to be in good order.

With this amp, if the processor dies then you can be pretty sure that nothing on the front panel lights up and the amp will refuse to turn on. So this just leaves the power amp section. Marantz had installed a small access panel at the bottom of the power amp section but you can't test it without removing the board from the chassis so got the rear panel off, disconnected the preamp and power supply cables from it and removed the power amp board from the chassis.

As can be seen from the image above, the power amp uses 8 transistors hidden behind copper shielding. These were tested individually along with the driver transistors and all seemed to be operating well. So proceeded to check the capacitors, first few that were removed were within tolerance though a bit low but then started noticing that some were well below the 20% allowed tolerance.

Took a closer look at the protection circuitry board which is a little thing at the back near the speaker outputs. Most amps have the protection relays or whatever other form of circuitry placed here. As can be seen from the image below, there were 4 caps on this board and all of them tested well below tolerance.

Changed these caps, temporarily installed the power amp board back in the chassis. Powered up the Marantz and the amp came out of protect mode. Ran it for a awhile and noticed that the amp runs a bit hot. Hit the Class A button and it really got hot inside the amp. Things were becoming slightly clearer now. On to the next post...

Amplifier Repair, Servicing & Restoration Services

Hello all!

Straight to the point, we repair, service and restore hifi amplifiers and receivers. Got one you need help with, send us a PM and we'll take it from there. Prices are based on parts and workmanship hours. Everything is done to factory specifications where possible. Restoration services include recapping, replacing components which aren't up to spec and so on.

1. All parts used are genuine and if possible, changed to a better specification one. For instance, those 85C caps in your old amp, we'll change them to original specification caps with a higher temperature and life expectancy rating.

2. All old solder joints are reflowed.

3. We do not do modifications unless a part is no longer available or there is no alternative.

3. All internal settings are tested and reset to original factory spec as stated in an amp's service manual.

4. All amps are run in before being returned to the customer.

5. All old components are also returned to the customer.

We currently only handle solid state gear. Most stereo hifi amplifiers and receivers. Vintage stuff as well. We will also look at certain AV receivers but we generally do not do much work on these because most of the time, the item's repair cost exceeds its value. We do service turntables as well depending on parts availability. Also those 2.1 systems and so on. Send me a PM stating the manufacturer, model and symptoms and we'll take it from there.

As we do check everything and return the item in the best state possible, repair can sometimes take time as all parts are ordered and troubleshooting doesn't involve just replacing a defective component. We'll check what caused the defect in the first place as well.

PM us here or Call/SMS or Whatsapp: 016 206 8974
Email: blackoctagon12@gmail.com
State the make and model of your equipment and what needs to be done to it.

BEFORE:

AFTER:

NAD 3020A Rebuild

Hey guys, here's the second project after the Arcam Alpha restoration. The amp is a NAD 3020A. The 3020 was a budget amp which would grow to be a legend because of the sound it produced. NAD's idea at the time was to make an amp that could sound really good with the cheapest of parts and they succeeded. But the 3020 had its fair share of problems. A lot were returned under warranty because they were poorly put together.

Anyway, the owner of this NAD contacted me through the LYN forums and asked me if I could work on his amp. There was a loud buzz coming from the headphone outputs and the amp had never been used to power a set of speakers as it was only used as a headphone amplifier. It was picked up second hand and the previous owner had mentioned that it had some repairs done to it in the past.

Here's the NAD as it first arrived.

The rear

A look inside. Wiring is a mess and years of dust and dirt buildup. Even the power LED was hanging inside. Haha...

Corroded Bias pots

Somebody had already been here and changed the main transistors and filter/smoothing caps. Unfortunately the caps were some generic ones. The transistors are later ones but the NAD originally never came with emitter or base resistors so modern day transistors will work but will also blow if pushed. The amp could go into thermal runaway.

Somebody had also changed the preamp section and power amp section with fast blow fuses. The original spec fuses should be 1A250V and 4A250V slow blow fuses. These will be changed.

The dust and dirt was really thick and heavy on the inside and the rear.

The next post will be about stripping it down

Hey guys,

With the Arcam amplifier restoration nearing completion, I took a look at the Tannoy Mercury M2's that came with the amp. Now these speakers aren't as old as the amp and were bought to replace a pair of Mission speakers that the owner's younger brother took. But like the Arcam, they were stored in a damp apartment and had not been used for a number of years.

As you can imagine, dust had set in and at first, the surface dust was vacuumed off. Next I removed the drivers and the binding posts at the rear of the cabinet. Make a note about which cable goes to which driver and the positive and negative terminals before removing the cables from the drivers. The crossover is built into this unit so things came off pretty easily. A quick check showed that the woofers were still in good condition. They were still flexible. The rubber edges had not turned brittle or dried and the seal at the rear was still in good condition. They also tested ok with a multimeter.

The tweeters however were a different story. There was a film of oil on and around the dome. As if the tweeter was leaking oil. This is actually ferrofluid. You can read about ferrofluid here: Ferrofluid Wikipedia Page

As ferrofluid is important in damping and cooling the tweeters and the tweeters dome is damaged from the leak, I've decided to leave the units out and look for new ones. Will have to wait till after CNY for the price and to check with the owner if its ok and then we'll either go ahead and replace them or reuse the old ones somehow.

I cleaned the cabinet with a damp cloth, wiping away the dust and what looked like some sort of moisture. Some places had to be scrubbed a bit hard for the fake wood grain to look good again. Will use a pvc cleaner or wood shine to bring the cabinets back to life. Overall the cabinets are actually in alright condition. There were some bugs but drying them out in the sun took care of that.

Reassembly

After checking the crossover and making sure all components were still within tolerance, I cleaned the binding posts gold plated contacts with contact cleaner. This brought back a shine to them. I then proceeded to install the binding posts back into the cabinet. Making sure which cables go to which driver was simple as the crossover board had one cable marked with a "T" (tweeter) and one marked with a "W" (woofer). So guide the cables to the respective holes at the front of the cabinet and then tighten the screws of the binding post box. There are four screws and ideally you want a good seal as the speaker tends to push air and you only want air escaping from the ports if your speaker has any. Below I've marked in the picture on how to tighten the screws in order. Kinda like changing the tire of a car. If you tighten the top screws first and then the bottom, you risk leaving a gap in the middle of the box or even worse, breaking the plastic casing the binding posts are in.

Next I installed the woofer back. Reinstall the cable. With speakers, chances are you'll either see a red dot or the + and - symbols on the speaker and the red cable goes to + and black to -. Of course the colors can be different so to be safe, always mark your cables before removing. With the Tannoy's the positive terminal and negative terminal are different sizes so its almost impossible to get them wrong.

The Tannoy woofer has 6 screws and I tightened them in a cross pattern to ensure a good seal. Don't tighten the screws at first, make sure all the screws go in smoothly, if you tighten 1 or 2 screws, the speaker's screw holes might not be aligned with the cabinet and there's a risk of damaging the cabinet by tightening a misaligned screw. So make sure all screws can be turned easily and once they're all in, tighten as in the pattern shown below. Don't overtighten the screws as you can break the thread in the cabinet and a loose screw in a speaker isn't a good thing unless you like rattling or other weird sounds

Now just have to do the other unit and wait for the tweeters. I will suggest replacing these tweeters as they did sound kinda soft on initial tests when I first got the speakers and the damage to the dome and leaking ferrofluid is cause for concern. Speakers need to be used and cleaned from time to time. Rubbers dry up, contacts get dirty and tweeters, well, you can see what happened to these. Refilling the tweeters is an option but ferrofluid for speakers is generally expensive and buying some just to do two tweeters isn't gonna be cost effective. And you can't use just any ferrofluid you can find, you gotta use the correct type for speakers.

Anyway, that's about it for now. Most equipment can be given a 2nd shot at life. So don't throw away that old 80'set your dad stored away, bring it out. Restore it and enjoy it. It might surprise you how good it actually is.

Cheers!

Arcam Alpha II

Hey guys, just thought I'd share this as I been meaning to post up a few things but haven't found the time and with CNY approaching, got some downtime so here goes:

Got this amp from a customer, its an Arcam Alpha II. The customer bought it 22 years ago and used it in the beginning but for the past 10 over years its been sitting in his spare apartment doing absolutely nothing. Actually he gave me his entire system to revive which includes a pair of Tannoy Mercury M2's and a Harman Kardon CD player. I'm tackling the amplifier first.

First signs showed a lot of dirt and corrosion. Initial test showed a very weak left channel and a cracking right channel.

Stripped the amp down and first part was cleaning it with a small brush and vacuum cleaner.

The good thing about the Arcam is it has both a top cover and bottom cover so access to the PCB is very good and only four screws opens up both covers. Flipped the amp over and checked the solder joints. These can go bad after a number of years and will need touching up with new solder. Sometimes these joints aren't so easy to find and you'll need a magnifying glass to spot bad ones. Found a few bad ones so retouched them.

Initially I wanted to swap the old volume potentiometer for an Alps unit but the budget didn't allow it and sourcing a new one is not easy as you'll have to obtain the correct size and length to fit the original knobs. So instead I cleaned out the volume, tone and balance pots. Contact cleaner does the job. Do not ever use WD40 on pots as WD40 leaves a residue which can act as a conductor.

Next on the list was to check the components. The output stage transistors were healthy but looked like they've been replaced sometime in the amp's life as the original ones are marked AAR and only one transistor out of the four still has the original markings. I also checked the bias and these had to be reset to factory specs (need a service manual for this) as one channel was slightly off.

To set the bias the amp needs to be on for at least half an hour with no speakers or anything attached. The volume has to be all the way down and then the bias is checked and set to factory specs. Most amps have a small variable resistor to adjust the bias and changing components in the amplifier stage usually requires the bias to be set and a lot of techs fail to do this. In extreme cases this can lead to premature failure. Also failing to set the bias can lead amps to sound 'slow' or too 'fast'. Some amps don't have a bias adjustment and these kind of amps need to have their components matched.

Anyway, hooked the amp back up and it actually works quite well and has been on test for awhile. For a 22 year old amp, it actually sounds very good

However for a 22 year old amp, its gonna get a complete re-cap and I've already ordered new Panasonic capacitors for it and will get to that soon. Also if budget permits will be changing the RCA jacks as they're in quite bad shape. The Deltron banana connectors however will be retained as they aren't cheap and can clean them out.

Cheers!

As you all probably know, a good instrument cable should be of low capacitance (which this one is), have very good shielding (double here) and must be flexible (its soft, trust me! )

How reliable is this cable? Well, the plugs are not gold plated and I selected these plugs for a few reasons, one that gold plated plugs will wear out after awhile if put into constant use (plugging and unplugging all the time). The gold plating will wear out. Also these Amphenol plugs are from the Musician's range so they're specifically made for instrument cables. As for the cable itself, if you read the tech spec, it can withstand high heat and it can accept high DC voltage (any shorts in the circuit won't damage the cable). Also it's by Van Damme. Never heard of them? Well, they're used extensively in studios and with live acts because of their durability and extremely good sound. The cable is 9 feet 2 inches long. Perfect for playing on stage with an amp and not too long either for a bedroom guitarist

How has this cable been made? Its been terminated with WBT solder which contains 4% silver. This is in keeping with the cable's natural silver coating. Also the plug ends have been applied with adhesive and 3 layers of heat shrink which helps the already very good strain relief that the Amphenol plugs have. The adhesive also minimizes the risk of having the cables come apart inside the plug. The main conductor does not bear the load of the plug so let's say if someone were to grab just the cable and swing the plug around, the main conductor will not take the force hence will not get damaged

As you can see, it looks like a simple cable but a lot of thought has gone into it's design and the material's chosen to make it. Below are some pics:
