unclaim Hanjin cargo will be destroyed or sold off

SINGAPORE: Monday (Nov 28) is D-day for cargo owners who still have goods sitting in containers owned or operated by South Korea's beleaguered Hanjin Shipping in Singapore ports.

Port operator PSA Singapore announced in an undated note on its website that Nov 28 is the last day for all shippers to claim Hanjin-linked cargo-laden containers that are lying in its terminals and facilities.

“Take notice that if the containers and/or the cargo therein remain unclaimed after Nov 28, 2016, we will take steps to dispose of and/or sell them as we may deem fit,” PSA’s note said.

When contacted by Channel NewsAsia on Monday, a PSA spokesperson declined to comment about the number of Hanjin containers that remained unclaimed in Singapore, as well as the total number of containers that have been collected and unloaded thus far.

The demise of Hanjin Shipping – South Korea’s biggest and the world’s seventh-largest container line – nearly three months ago had sent shockwaves across the ailing shipping industry, and created a massive global supply chain disruption when more than 100 of its ships and their cargo were left in limbo at sea.

Since Singapore ports were declared as one of the "safe havens" for the shipping giant and its local subsidiaries in September, at least 18 Hanjin vessels have called and departed from local ports, according to a PSA notice dated Nov 1.

To retrieve their cargo on board the ships of the South Korean firm, cargo owners have had to fork out additional charges, including a refundable deposit of S$5,000 per container to PSA and stevedorage fees in cash. However, the process of getting to their stranded goods has been far from smooth sailing, with some businesses in Singapore describing it as a “nightmare”.

Nearly two months on, the mad scramble to work out contingency plans is over for at least one company.

“Everything is back to normal now,” NCS Line Singapore’s managing director James Hwang told Channel NewsAsia on Monday.

To locate and gain control of its 80 containers on board various Hanjin vessels, the freight forwarder’s team in Singapore had worked six days a week throughout October. Currently, NCS Line is transloading its final batch of 15 containers and is sorting out its finances after having forked out a hefty six-figure sum in advance to rescue all of its cargo.

While it has received most of the refund from the PSA for its S$400,000 deposit, the freight forwarder is still awaiting a refund of US$4,000 (about S$5,712) from Hanjin Shipping for the use of the South Korean firm’s containers.

During the transloading process, goods in a Hanjin container are usually unpacked and placed into a non-Hanjin container before being transported to its final destination. However, there were goods in four containers that had been “too risky” to move, said Mr Hwang, and so the company decided to pay a deposit of US$1,000 (S$1,428) to continue using the same Hanjin containers.

“Hopefully, until we get back our money from Hanjin, they will continue to operate,” the managing director said. On Nov 22, Hanjin Shipping, which is under court order to cut its workforce and dispose of its assets, announced that it would be selling part of its container ship business to Korea Line Corp for US$31.38 million.

But regardless of whether he gets the refunds from Hanjin, Mr Hwang told Channel NewsAsia that he was relieved that this painful process is finally over.

“I was angry due to our workload, the money issues, and also because this is one of Korea’s biggest companies. I felt shameful as a Korean,” he said. “I was very upset against Hanjin and also the Korean government because their way of taking action is not proper. When the government made the announcement that they could no longer inject money into Hanjin, they should have analysed the consequences. This chaos could have been avoided if they had thought through it more carefully.”

Follow See Kit on CNA @SeeKitCNA

- CNA/sk

BEIJING: China's Foreign Ministry said on Monday (Nov 28) that it had lodged a protest with Singapore after the city-state's armoured troop carriers were seized by Hong Kong customs en route from Taiwan last Wednesday.

Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang made the comment at a regular press briefing.

The Chinese government had said on Friday that it "consistently and resolutely opposes any form of official exchanges, including military exchanges and cooperation" with Taiwan, which Beijing regards as a breakaway province.

A team from the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) arrived in Hong Kong on Friday night to try and resolve the issue of its nine Terrex Infantry Carrier Vehicles (ICV) and associated equipment being delayed at the port. The team met with representatives of APL, the shipping contractor involved.

The containers which were opened for inspection have been resealed by Hong Kong customs and moved to a secured access-controlled area, said Singapore's Ministry of Defence (MINDEF).

According to a report from by Hong Kong news agency Factwire, it was China's law enforcement officials who tipped off Hong Kong customs about the shipment of nine armoured vehicles.

(Reporting by Michael Martina; Writing by Ben Blanchard; Editing by Nick Macfie)

- Reuters

Viagra found in South Korea presidential office

The scandal in South Korea involving President Park Geun-hye has taken an unexpected twist with news that Viagra has been found in her offices.

Authorities found the pills - usually used to treat erectile dysfunction - while investigating corruption allegations against Ms Park.
The government says the Viagra was bought to combat altitude sickness.

The South Korean leader is accused of allowing her friend, Choi Soon-sil, to influence her decisions.

The presidential office confirmed it bought 364 Viagra and similar generic pills to deal with altitude sickness on official trips to East Africa, although the pills were never used.
The BBC's Stephen Evans in Seoul, says the discovery of Viagra will add an air of remoteness to the president. Many Koreans believe Ms Park is living in a "different world" which will exacerbate political pressure on her to resign.
Some early rumours among Koreans alleged Ms Park could have been involved with cultish rituals with her friend Ms Choi.

Ms Choi, a long-time friend of Ms Park's, is the daughter of Choi Tae-min, a shadowy quasi-religious leader who was closely linked to Ms Park's father, then-president Park Chung-hee.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-3807615...source=facebook

Trump softens climate stance

WASHINGTON: Donald Trump signalled on Tuesday (Nov 22) his campaign trail dismissal of the threat of climate change may have been hot air after all, saying he was "open minded" on supporting global accords.

The US president-elect emerged from cabinet-building talks in his Trump Tower headquarters and travelled 10 minutes across town to the New York Times to give a wide-ranging interview on his plans.

He disavowed "alt-right" activists who hailed his election as a victory for white supremacy, distanced himself from calls to prosecute Hillary Clinton and defended his global business empire.

And he appeared to soften his pledge to pull the United States out of accords like last year's COP21 Paris Agreement, that binds countries to national pledges to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

"I'm looking at it very closely. I have an open mind to it," he told New York Times executives and journalists over lunch at their headquarters, according to the paper's own account.

Campaigning ahead of Nov 8, Trump repeatedly told crowds of rustbelt and southern voters - factory workers, coal miners and oilmen among them - that he would tear up international climate agreements.

As far back as 2012 he had tweeted: "The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make US manufacturing non-competitive."

Now elected and due to become president on Jan 20, when he was confronted by Times columnist Thomas Friedman he admitted there may be a link between human industry and global warming.

"I think there is some connectivity. Some, something. It depends on how much," he said, adding he would nevertheless remain concerned about how much green measures would "cost our companies."

Donald Trump won't pursue charges against Hillary

US President-elect Donald Trump will not pursue a further investigation into Hillary Clinton's emails, to help her "heal", his spokeswoman has said.

His adviser said Mr Trump would not appoint a special prosecutor to look into the former Secretary of State, as he had pledged during campaigning.
Later, Mr Trump said a fresh inquiry was not off the table, but he didn't want to "hurt the Clintons".

The FBI cleared Mrs Clinton, but criticised her private email server.
Mr Trump had threatened during his campaign to "jail" Mrs Clinton, and at rallies his supporters often chanted: "Lock her up!"

Senior Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway told MSNBC that "when the president-elect... tells you before he's even inaugurated he doesn't wish to pursue these charges, it sends a very strong message - tone and content".
"And I think Hillary Clinton still has to face the fact that a majority of Americans don't find her to be honest or trustworthy, but if Donald Trump can help her heal, then perhaps that's a good thing," she added.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-38...source=facebook

Trump disavows 'alt-right' supporters

Donald Trump has repudiated the fringe "alt-right" group that celebrated his election win with Nazi salutes.

In a far-ranging interview with the New York Times, the US president-elect was quoted as saying: "I condemn them. I disavow, and I condemn."
He said he did not want to "energise" the group, which includes neo-Nazis, white nationalists and anti-Semites.

Alt-right supporters were filmed on Saturday in Washington DC cheering as a speaker shouted: "Hail Trump."
In the video, Richard Spencer, a leader of the "alt-right" movement, told a conference of members that America belongs to white people, whom he described as "children of the sun".

He denounced the movement's critics as "the most despicable creatures who ever walked the planet".
"Hail Trump, hail our people, hail victory!" Spencer shouts at one point as some members of the audience raise their arms in the Nazi salute.

The gathering on Saturday drew protesters who blocked traffic around the Ronald Reagan Building, a federally owned conference centre in the nation's capital.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed concern on Tuesday that Mr Trump's election victory could give succour to white supremacists.
A senior official close to her described the "Hail Trump" video as "repulsive and worrying".

But Mr Trump stood by his chief strategist Steve Bannon, the former CEO of Breitbart News, and bristled at claims that the ultra conservative site was associated with the white nationalist movement.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-38...source=facebook

WARNING 5-second mp4 video will crash your iPhone

http://www.theverge.com/2016/11/22/1371317...h-video-mp4-bug

Apple's iOS software quality is being called into question again this week, following the discovery of a five-second video that will force an iPhone to lock up and freeze. Reddit users discovered the bug yesterday, and all an iPhone user needs to do is click an MP4 file and watch it to experience the problem. The Verge has tested the bug on multiple iPhones running the latest iOS 10.1 updates, and beta copies of iOS 10.2. All of our test phones locked up shortly after playing the video.

In our video demonstration of the bug above, you'll see that a link to the video, delivered via iMessage, will make iOS 10 play the file in the default player. It appears that the video is corrupt, generating a loop that causes the iPhone to crash around 10 seconds after watching it. We're not linking to the video for obvious reasons, but it appears to only crash devices when it's sent as a link rather than simply transferred as a file. The only way to recover from the crash is to hold the power button and home button at the same time to perform a hard reset. An iPhone will work as normal once it has rebooted this way.

This isn't the first time that a crash bug has been discovered in iOS. Last year, a string of text disabled Apple's iMessage app on iPhones, and the company addressed the problem with iOS 8.4. Earlier this year, Safari started randomly crashing on iPhones due to a software issue that was quickly resolved. We've reached out to Apple to comment on the crash problem, and we'll update you accordingly. For now, be wary of any links to MP4 files that you receive from friends trying to prank you.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

download on your iPhone at your own risk

bug wont happen on PC/Android

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

The only way to recover from the crash is to hold the power button and home button at the same time to perform a hard reset.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

https://vk.com/doc9732001_439143039?hash=01ec13630a10030bea&dl=2cde6a532028d603af

Unlike the bloody ends of the reigns of Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines and General Suharto of Indonesia, two other strongmen of his era, his departure, announced 16 months ago, was peaceful.

Dr. Mahathir transformed an economy dependent on tin, rubber and palm oil into one of the major trading nations of Southeast Asia and the exporter of most of the world's Dell laptop computers and Intel high-end processors.

''It has been a remarkable transformation,'' said Joseph E. Stiglitz, professor of economics at Columbia University and winner of the Nobel in economic science in 2001. ''They have attracted foreign direct investment, improved technologically and become a country that is helping other developing countries. I think it is an alternative to the extremism we see in much of the world.''

In the sleek capital of glass and steel towers here, women in the latest fashions from Prada and Ferragamo saunter the shopping malls in high heels and head scarves. Further out in the hinterland there are plans for a new rail line stretching the length of the Malay Peninsula.

Islam is the official state religion, and a strict version of Shariah law applies to Muslims in two of Malaysia's provinces. Recently an unmarried woman was fined more than $1,000 for sitting too close to a man to whom she was not related.

How to square Dr. Mahathir's modernization with the increasing religiosity among the Malay Muslims is one of the crucial questions at the end of his era.

The answer lies in the notion that Malaysia, with a manageable population of 23 million, can demonstrate that modernity and Islam are compatible, says Karim Raslan, a lawyer educated at Cambridge University in Britain and one of the younger generation of commentators here.

''For those who come from the Enlightenment tradition, the increasing religiosity is very distressing,'' Mr. Raslan said. ''But we live in the real world.''

Thus, Mr. Raslan said, Malaysian political dialogue will probably be cast even further in an Islamic framework, though that does not mean that modernization or the steps toward more democracy will end. ''Malaysian Muslims have become much more conservative religiously,'' he said, ''so you have to be able to argue and to present all the policies in terms of Islam. The division between the mosque and the state no longer exists.''

Dr. Mahathir's rants against Jews drew a strong rebuke from President Bush, who said he told the prime minister his remarks were ''wrong and divisive.'' But Dr. Mahathir denied the president's account, saying, ''All he said was that 'I regret today to have to use strong words against you.' ''

The rants served a political purpose at home, analysts here say, and also helped propel Dr. Mahathir onto the world stage, where he felt he belonged, along with the better-known senior minister of Singapore, Lee Kwan Yew, they said.

By criticizing the Jews -- which he continued to do in his last week in office -- Dr. Mahathir was trying to burnish his credentials among Malaysia's Islamic religious community, said Jomo K. Sundram, a critic of Dr. Mahathir and a professor of applied economics at the University of Malaysia.

Much of Dr. Mahathir's speech to the conference was a scathing attack on leaders of Muslim religious organizations, or ulamas, another favorite Mahathir theme. He accused them of failing to bring their people into the modern world.

''Anti-Semitism is the kind of thing you do to establish your ostensible Islamic credentials,'' Mr. Jomo said. ''Mahathir does this because his Islamic credentials are so weak, and because he spends so much time attacking the ulamas. He was saying, 'In case you think I'm anti-Muslim, here is some anti-Semitism.' ''

Mr. Abdullah is expected to present a more subdued image, and to be ''more responsible,'' a Western official said. He will probably dispense with the anti-Semitic outbursts, officials here say, in part because his own background as a graduate in Islamic studies sits better with the Islamic religious leaders.

On the economic front Mr. Abdullah seems poised to continue the Mahathir formula of encouraging direct foreign investment and keeping the natural resource industries rolling. He inherits an economy that is expected to achieve 4.5 percent growth this year, second only to Thailand in the Southeast Asia.

Dr. Mahathir got high marks from some, including from Mr. Stiglitz, for daring to rebuff the International Monetary Fund's prescriptions for Malaysia during the Asian financial crisis of 1997.

''Though Prime Minister Mahathir's policies trying to keep interest rates low, trying to put brakes on the rapid flow of speculative money out of the country were attacked from all quarters, Malaysia's downturn was shorter and shallower than that of any of the other countries,'' Mr. Stiglitz wrote in his book ''Globalization and Its Discontents.''

Now Malaysia has an economic situation that is the envy of others, Mr. Stiglitz said. ''They have a kind of economic stability which others don't have,'' he said. ''They managed their way through the crisis, and that gives them a certain amount of confidence.''

By providing an open door to technology industries, he said, Malaysia overcame what economists call the ''natural resource curse'' in developing nations -- an overdependence on natural resources.

In the recent global downturn, though, Malaysia has relied on surging oil and gas prices, and big sales of palm oil to China. One of the major challenges for Mr. Abdullah will be what to do about the flows of foreign investment that are flooding into China instead of Southeast Asian countries like Malaysia.

Dr. Mahathir was elected several times in multiparty elections. New elections are scheduled for next year, and Mr. Abdullah is expected to win easily.

But the focus will be on whether the new prime minister can win back some of the voters who chose the conservative Islamic Party of Malaysia over the United Malays National Organization in 1999.

Those voters were disenchanted by Dr. Mahathir's prosecution in 1998 of Anwar Ibrahim, who was deemed to be his successor but was charged by Dr. Mahathir's courts with corruption and sodomy.

The Islamic Party of Malaysia, which wants a more conservative Islamic state, made strong electoral gains in 1999 and now controls 2 of the 13 state governments.

Another question will be whether Mr. Abdullah will relax the strict newspaper and broadcast censorship that Dr. Mahathir imposed and justified until his last days in office. Human Rights Watch called on Mr. Abdullah to repeal the nation's Internal Security Act.

It seems clear that Mr. Abdullah will retain the friendship with the Bush administration that Dr. Mahathir forged immediately after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks. Dr. Mahathir provided crucial intelligence to the United States that helped in the arrest of suspected terrorists.

''By Bush administration standards Malaysia is an outstanding democracy,'' Mr. Jomo said. ''This is a regime they can do business with. It is less embarrassing than Pakistan. There is real support for the government and a ritualistic election every now and then.''

Why is Mahathir supporting opposition? Is it because he actually realise the wrong doings that has done in his 20+ years of ruling

And wants to seek forgiveness

He done many good things, but also lots of bad, he was the one that put Anwar in jail, made Najib who he is today

Imagine if Mahathir did not change his heart, how would things be different

do you think Mahathir would rest peacefully? would he be able to fix Malaysia

if people say Dr M supports opposition 10 years ago ppl will say u are high

Actually I do hope he does have good intentions. I think greed got hold of him in the later years of his rule

or does he actually just want his power back and regret stepping down years ago

Melania and Barron Trump not moving to White

With the country divided after the elections, so too will the first family be split come inauguration day on January 20.

Melania and Barron will not move to the White House in the new year, choosing instead to stay at Trump Tower so the 10-year-old can finish the school year, theNew York Post reported.

Melania will travel to Washington DC when necessary, and Donald Trump himself is expected to spend much of his time as president at his own three-story penthouse apartment in midtown Manhattan.

Melania has decided to stay put in the interests of her only son, with sources telling the Post: 'The campaign has been difficult for Barron, and she is really hoping to keep disruption to a minimum.'

Melania, who is sometimes spotted picking up her son from school, told People magazine in the spring that with Trump on the road, she has spent a lot of time with Barron because he 'needs somebody as a parent'.

The 10-year-old will complete the school year at Columbia Grammar & Preparatory School on the Upper West Side of New York City, where tuition starts at $44,120 for those enrolling in pre-K.

Famous alumni include actress Sarah Michelle Geller and author Herman Melville.

While it is possible they will eventually settle into the White House once the school year is over, no plans have been set for that to happen, the Post reported.

Trump himself was reportedly shocked when he won the election, and moving to the White House may be an adjustment after nearly 30 years of living in Trump Tower.

Their three-story penthouse apartment, decked in 24-karat gold and marble, was said to be nicer than the White House, according to his ex-wife Ivana Trump, with whom he had three children Donald Jr, Ivanka, and Eric Trump.

The New York Police Department has been working with the Secret Service to instill security measures around the building on Fifth Avenue, which attracted the ire of protesters in the days following the election.
Armed security forces have been posted outside the building, but it remains unclear how long that will be necessary since Trump's concrete plans have not been announced.
With barricades, truck diversions, bag checks for pedestrians, traffic in the area has become a problem and businesses in the area have suffered after New York City's mayor advised people to steer clear.
Even garbage trucks have not been allowed through the area, and bags of trash piled up on the sidewalks.

I don't but some really do

They are willing to give up their office job for a farming/waiter job in Australia for example. Others are not so extreme like just moving to Singapore
