The decision is the country’s last step in shedding three years of zero-Covid and pivoting to living with the virus.

Covid-19 has been managed as a top category A infectious disease since 2020, putting it on par with bubonic plague and cholera. When the declaration was made to do so, authorities said it would be administered according to the Frontier Health and Quarantine Law.

Under Chinese laws, authorities must impose the toughest restrictions such as quarantine and isolation of the infected and their close contacts, and citywide lockdowns to contain those diseases.

At the border, the infected must be isolated and those who might be infected quarantined, depending on the incubation period.

But three sources from provincial health authorities and hospitals in Guangdong, Fujian and Jiangsu said they were notified by the National Health Commission on Sunday, asking them to prepare for the downgrade to category B management from January 8.

That category means Covid-19 only requires “necessary treatment and measures to curb the spread”.

The Post understands from various sources that strict control measures including compulsory quarantine for travellers coming to China will also be removed after the downgrade, since it is no longer a compulsory requirement in the category B management.

There are signs that China has been preparing for the pivot, with PCR testing no longer mandatory and Vice-Premier Sun Chunlan, who has been in charge of the Covid-19 response, urging lower level authorities to focus on treatment instead of infections.

The National Health Commission also stopped announcing daily Covid-19 cases on Sunday, and passed the baton to a disease control agency, a practice more in line with management of lower level infectious diseases.

Authorities will also no longer refer to Covid-19 as a form of pneumonia.

According to a senior hospital administrator in Xiamen in the southeastern province of Fujian, the NHC said Covid-19 would be known officially as a “novel coronavirus infection” instead of the present “novel coronavirus pneumonia”.

“The name change is subtle but important,” the administrator said.

“I think it is official recognition of the clear changes in the symptoms of infection with the Omicron variant, which is less deadly. It does not always trigger pneumonia-like symptoms.”

The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday authorized updated versions of Pfizer-BioNTech’s and Moderna’s Covid booster shots that target the highly contagious BA.5 omicron subvariant.

The FDA authorized Pfizer’s modified booster for people ages 12 and older; Moderna's shot was authorized for those 18 and up.

People who’ve received the two-dose primary series of either vaccine and those who’ve received the initial two doses plus one or two boosters are eligible for the updated shots as long as two months have passed since their last shot, the agency said in a statement.

"The public can be assured that a great deal of care has been taken by the FDA to ensure that these bivalent Covid-19 vaccines meet our rigorous safety, effectiveness and manufacturing quality standards for emergency use authorization," Dr. Peter Marks, the agency's top vaccine regulator, said in a statement.

The FDA’s signoff isn’t the last step: The decision will now go to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and its advisory committee to issue their own recommendation on how the shots should be used. The agency's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices is scheduled to vote Thursday. CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky could sign off on the doses shortly after Thursday's meeting, and vaccinations could begin widely after Labor Day.

The U.S. government agreed to purchase 105 million doses of Pfizer’s vaccine and 66 million doses of Moderna’s vaccine.

Both modified boosters target the BA.4 and BA.5 omicron subvariants, in addition to the original coronavirus strain, in a single shot.

The FDA convened its outside advisory committee in June to review data on a different version of a booster — one that combined the original strain with an earlier version of omicron, called BA.1. At the time, the committee voted in favor of updating the shot to target omicron, but it did not specify which particular subvariant.

The FDA did not consult its advisory committee again before Wednesday's authorizations.

"Lightyear" won't be screened in M'sia

To infinity... and begone! Pixar’s upcoming animated feature Lightyear will not be playing in Malaysian cinemas.

Originally slated to open in Malaysia on June 16, the movie tells the ‘real’ story of Buzz Lightyear (voiced by Chris Evans), the space ranger that inspired the toys introduced in Pixar’s hit Toy Story franchise.

While there has been no official statement from the movie’s distributors Walt Disney Company Malaysia, an unofficial source informed StarLifestyle that the movie will not be showing here after all.

No reason has been given for the cancellation of the movie in Malaysia, but Lightyear has been the subject of much controversy over a scene featuring a kiss between a same-sex couple.

In March, Pixar came under fire for cutting the scene from the movie. The studio later restored that scene to the movie after backlash from its own employees.

It has also been reported in international press that countries like China and Egypt have already banned the movie for its homosexual themes.

PUTRAJAYA, March 2 — The Subnational Statistics of Parliament, which encompasses socio-economic and environmental statistics in 222 parliamentary areas, has recorded the Wangsa Maju constituency as having the highest population density of 13,475 people per square kilometre (sq km).

The figures, published by the Department of Statistics Malaysia, (DOSM), indicated that the parliamentary constituency with the second-highest population density per sq km was Jelutong (11,373 people), followed by Pandan (11,371).

According to the statistics, Bangi recorded the highest number of households (182,471 people) and dwellings (201,487).

The Baram and Hulu Rajang constituencies, meanwhile, have the highest number of government health clinics, with 25 and 14 each respectively, while Baram also has the most number of schools — 78 primary and eight secondary.

The DOSM said in a statement today that the Subnational Statistics of Parliament was to facilitate and boost data usage among MPs.

The Subnational Statistics of Parliament, which is published for the first time, contains indicators such as basic information; population; housing, energy usage; household income; education; health; poverty; public safety; internet and social media; basic facilities; and environment.

The number of associations and business companies according to economic sector and the number of businesses linked to the needs of the local communities operating in Parliamentary constituencies such as petrol stations, private kindergartens, laundromats, retail outlets, car workshops and dental clinics were also included in the publication.

“The publication can improve governance of an area and provide socio-economic needs in a more targeted manner for the well-being of the people,” Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Mohd Uzir Mahidin said in the statement.

He said the publication of the Subnational Statistics of Parliament would be updated annually and become an important reference for decision-makers, input for policy-making, monitoring and evaluation on the effectiveness of national development programmes and research.

The DOSM is also preparing a publication for every state assembly constituency to be disseminated to every elected representative in the second quarter of this year, he added. — Bernama

SINGAPORE: Singapore will simplify its COVID-19 rules and do away with the requirement for safe distancing in mask-on settings, the multi-ministry task force announced on Wednesday (Feb 16).

The streamlined rules, which will apply from Feb 25, will focus on the five “most important and effective measures” – group sizes, mask-wearing, workplace requirements, safe distancing and capacity limits.

Speaking at a task force press conference, co-chair Gan Kim Yong said safe-management measures are being simplified so that they are easier for businesses and people to understand and comply with.

"This will also encourage a greater sense of personal responsibility, which will play an increasingly important part in our journey towards COVID resilience,” he said.

Singapore's new COVID-19 cases are expected to remain at between 15,000 and 20,000 or even higher a day, said Mr Gan. But cases are expected to peak in a few weeks.

When the number of cases begins to fall, Singapore can then further ease its COVID-19 measures, he added.

“In the meantime, we will streamline and rationalise our border measures, healthcare protocols and safe-management measures, to prepare ourselves for reopening after the Omicron wave subsides,” he added.

“These five parameters crystalise what we learnt to be the most important aspects of SMMs for pandemic control,” said Health Minister and task force co-chair Ong Ye Kung.

Although they do not represent a relaxation of the rules, there are “quite profound implications” on the way Singapore manages the COVID-19 pandemic, he added.

If a new variant of concern emerges, authorities will try to adjust these five measures "instead of coming up with micro rules for different settings" which add on to a "confusing web of regulations", said Mr Ong.

SOCIAL GATHERINGS LIMIT REMAINS AT FIVE PEOPLE

From Feb 25, safe distancing is encouraged but will not be required between people or groups while wearing masks, said the Ministry of Health (MOH) in a separate press release.

Safe distancing will still be required when not wearing masks, and the distance will be 1m for all settings.

The maximum group size for social gatherings remains at five people. But the maximum number of unique visitors per household will be adjusted from five people per day to five people at any one time.

Wearing a mask will continue to be the default, the ministry said. “There are no new exceptions.”

At the workplace, 50 per cent of employees who can work from home will continue to be allowed back at the office, said MOH in the press release.

But with safe-management measures streamlined, workplace requirements will now be “aligned” with those in the community.

For example, workers who have their masks on will not need to maintain 1m safe distancing in the workplace. Social gatherings at the workplaces will also be allowed to resume with up to five people in a group, said the Health Ministry.

“There will be no restrictions on cross-deployment of employees across workplaces, although employers may continue to do so for business continuity reasons,” it added.

3. The student approached his teacher and had sex for the second time as he was still "not sure about something".
4. Feeling guilty and remorseful, the student shared his story to a volunteer in the school, who then reported this to the police.
5. According to Taiwanese law, the female teacher could be sentenced to a maximum of 10 years in jail. However, the prosecutor pleaded for a lighter sentence and the case is still in trial.
