Hi All,

Im a Design Engineer with around 4 years of exp. Got huge jump in salary recently after change job (50% increment, making around 5k now). My game plan is to achieve atleast 12k by 30. Im thinking of some strategies on how to make that:

1. Taking more managerial tasks (resource planning, process improvements, automations)
2. Finding business/make new solutions for the company (develop and pitch new capabilites of my department)
3. Setting up an association of engineers specfic to my industry to connect and know EVERYBODY in the business for collaborative movements (secure outside funding for RnD projects, etc)

These 3 shall be done on top of my day to day job. Extra hours are expected. But Is this realistic? Do employer really care about something like this? Is there someone out there who have done something like this before? Is it better to just have a second job instead?

I'm just a normal structural design engineer with 2 years experience. Got another offer from another direct competitor company. Some info to consider;

New offer (Aussie MNC);
Cons
1. Company currently expanding,salary is usually late ie- oct salary, but nov only receive. -seems like red flag.
2. Competitor company to my current one. - job description is too similar to my current one(might be a pro)
3. Unknown colleagues/work environment
4. Usually 1 month bonus, but lately no bonus - refer cons no.1
Pros
1. 15% basic salary increment - good but not mind blowing
2. Highly Technical boss with an Ir title (at least on paper) - great for career growth
3. 8 flexi-hours workday, 10-15 mins away from home - great since very close to my uni also as I'm doing masters part time

Current Company (Local Public Listed Company);
Cons
1. Underpaid Salary and not too great benefits- salary ngam2 market rate despite company is top of industry and in the middle of KL
2. 2 to 3 or 4 hours of total commute to work everyday - waste time inside car
3. 8.5 non-flexi hours - not too great
4. Less technical bosses and seniors - might not be a problem since I am an independent learner
5. Engineer do everything - less time to focus on actual engineering jobs.
Pros
1. Good bonus - Throughout 20 years (i asked EVERYONE to verify this), even the lowest performing employee got at least 1.5 months (last year we got 3 months)
2. Great colleagues and bosses - No bullying at all. Everyone is very2 helpful and nice despite not being technically competent, still willing to research and study together. Boss willing to backup you for your mistakes.

The main reason I decided to apply for other jobs are current cons. Would like some 2cents from other sifus here. From an experienced person POV which is better? Stay or Leave?

UiTM from an insider

Im an engineering graduate from Uitm. I came from a well off family from the city, able to speak n write understandable english, and lived in a Malay majority housing area.

And then I found lowyat.net Kopitiam section. Just after i got my UPU diploma result. I got a place in Uitm Perlis. A whole 10 hrs from my house,in the sticks,in a university hated by approximately just a little less than half of Malaysian. Imagine how devastated I was haha.

Back then, I really considerd to take graphic design in an IPTS. Since although I have nothing against engineering, i did really love drawing and arts very much. My parents asked me to go uitm and i went. what i thought back then was "waa non popular engineering course (civil), uitm some more, how can I get hired like this".

In Uitm, I was a minority, everytime there was a discussion on bumi status I voiced out my unpopular opinion directly. Most of the time i was put down or ignored. But in the whole course of my studies, these discussions are side notes and were not touched much. Lecturers instead teaches their subjects normally like any IPTA/IPTS. I really thought there would be some more brainwash on bumi power etc but surprisingly there's very little of that. Facilies were imperfect but /k people sure complain one haha.

The majority of Uitm students were those from kampung and poor families. A complete turnover from my circle of friends during highschool. Kopitiam people usually labelled these kinds as rempit. Very poor english and heavily accented bm. They eat cheap and simple, their behaviours are timid and they dont have skyhigh ambitions other than getting a decent job to give back to their parents.

Fast forward 5 years later, I got a job at a construction company as a freshie. Construction sector is where all the ah beng and ah lian is, so my circle of friends switched again haha. U got sooo many chinese and indians who speaks very broken english and very heavy malay accent.They eat cheap and simple, their behaviours are timid and they dont have skyhigh ambitions other than getting a decent job to give back to their parents. These people however didnt had the chance to do tertiary studies.

I mingled with so many people from so many different backgrounds now that when I see all the Uitm hate posts,i cant help but feel sad. Trapped between all these hates, are people who are trying to make ends meet. The poor bumi and non bumis.
Despite the hate posts, i am still hired by chinaman companies. I am still unsure wether my nonbumi friends/bosses hates me for my uitm background or not haha.

I went into uitm i saw melayu kaya and melayu miskin. I went out of uitm i saw cina kaya and cina miskin. My spoken English is broken beyond repair now (my boss asks me to do work "fast fast" and take ot "many many") haha. I will use my uitm degree to help bumis and nonbumis any way I can to wash away this little guilt of mine.

To nonbumi Malaysians, Sorry for taking advantage of my bumi status and to uitm grads, contribute back to the country la eh? Haha. Thankful and guilt goes together. when I became wiser, ill try to rephrase this wall of text xD

P.s My academic and professional interests are in structural engineering, fluid mechanics, aeronautics, offshore engineering and manga. But still not very good at them.

Hello there again sifus, I want to ask how to negotiate salary. Currently my tembak request is 4k, the company offer me 3k (2.5k basic + 500 all). However,the OT rate is high, 2.2x the hourly rate. Its Construction industry. My question is, is there any room for me to nego abit more? Im not sure if i will seem rude if try to nego as a fresh grad..

Update: Thanks for the help everyone! I settled for that offer without further negotiation because OT in construction industry is a daily routine, 4k per month is an easy grab (previusly intern at this company, OT exceed my allowance by a large margin lol). I dont want to be seen as greedy by the employer oso. Alas, thank u everyone!

Hi im starting my internship at a construction site . from my readings I concluded that working at sites i have to bear many things in mind:

1. Curses arent personal
2. The senior workers are hard to please
3. Ask questions if dont know
4. Safety first

My questions are:

1. I have long gone from my cursing-every conversation days. How should I approach this culture? It would be best if I can click with the workers without cursing too much.
2. Any tips to please construction otais? Any big NO to avoid when working with them?
