grainy dots in ps3

Hi! just recently bought the slim ps3 160gb. i tried to hook it up by using the hdmi cable which i bought separately. when it's in home page there are tiny grainy white dots all over the place but when i tried playing the game the picture is perfect! could someone help help with this prob? is it because of the hdmi cable or the ps3 console itself?
