This will soon be a great flood disaster

METRO NEWS
Monday, 29 Apr 2024

Land around Bohol flood retention pond has been earmarked for a housing project. — Photos: YAP CHEE HONG/The Star

Stakeholders worried over tender notice on KL land office website

KUALA Lumpur’s second-largest flood retention pond is once again under threat as new development plans emerge for the area.

This comes nearly a year after the Federal Government stopped a similar proposal by the previous administration to allocate the land to a private developer.

Concerns have resurfaced following a recent tender notice by Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur Lands and Mines Office (PTGWP), which called for bids to design and upgrade the 63.45ha Bohol flood retention pond in Seputeh for alienation under Section 76 of the National Land Code (Act 828).

PTGWP published the tender notice on its website, inviting companies to submit bids for the project to facilitate construction of a massive housing project.

Six plots of land totalling 10.85ha are being alienated on Lot 102996 for a development project.

An accompanying map shows the plots to be alienated for housing projects, namely Plot 1 (Rumawip), Plot 2 (residential condo), Plot 3 (residential condo), Plot 4 (Rumawip), Plot 5 (residential condo) and Plot 6 (Madani housing) (see graphic).

“What this means is that the government wants to develop the flood retention pond for a housing project and is calling for developers to submit a tender for the project.

“The successful developer must ensure that certain conditions are fulfilled, which involves re-aligning Sungai Kuyoh, which flows into the pond,” said a source from Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).

The tender opened on Jan 26 and closed on Feb 16.

A document on the website outlined requirements for tender submission, including the need to be a registered company and to submit four copies of the proposal document.

ALSO READ: Bohol land deal scrapped

The tender notice along with the map has caused unease among stakeholders.

When contacted, Seputeh MP Teresa Kok said, “I am also in the dark over this project.

“I have told DBKL many times to keep me informed about any new projects coming up in Seputeh.

“This is news to me; I will not support any project on flood retention pond land, especially one that is already a flood hotspot.”

Equally surprised by the news was Kinrara assemblyman Ng Sze Han, who said he was not aware of it.

“Bohol pond should function as originally intended, as a retention pond,” he said.

The Bohol flood retention pond, while located in Kuala Lumpur, borders Kinrara township in Selangor and Shah Alam Expressway (Kesas).

This area has seen floods in the past few years, with the last inundation occurring in March 2022.

StarMetro reached out to the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) for comments on the project, but its spokesperson neither confirmed nor denied the project, merely stating that Bohol pond came under the purview of the Federal Territories Department and was maintained by DBKL.

Bohol flood retention pond has been shrinking for decades.

“Hence, any queries in relation to government land, please check with PTGWP,” the spokesperson said in an email statement.

Meanwhile, a DID officer who spoke on condition of anonymity said, “It’s already out there, published on the PTGWP website.

“We were not told about this decision, so it surprised everyone here, especially since we opposed it the first time.”

The PTGWP director, when contacted, declined to comment on the issue.

In an August 2022 letter, Kuala Lumpur DID had opposed development on the land as the pond was part of a RM300mil Sungai Kuyoh Basin Flood Mitigation Plan, which was supposed to start in October last year.

The mitigation plan, however, did not take off as scheduled and it is unclear when it will take place.

StarMetro’s article on May 15, 2023.
StarMetro’s article on May 15, 2023.

DID’s consultants, in an assessment report for the project, said Bohol pond’s capacity was not large enough for excess rainwater.

In an exclusive report on May 8, 2023, titled “Gripped by flood fears”, StarMetro highlighted the proposed alienation of land surrounding Bohol pond for a residential project consisting of affordable housing (40%) and residential condominiums (60%).

The pond is gazetted as reserve land for recreation.

According to documents sighted, PTGWP gave conditional approval to a company to alienate part of Lot 102996 for development on Oct 22, 2021.

In a follow-up report on May 15, 2023, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s political secretary Datuk Azman Abidin stated that a decision to cancel the alienation had been made after a meeting with various government agencies.

The developers had also failed to fulfil key technical requirements for the alienation process, he said.

Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said in a statement at that time, “The ministry, together with DID, is committed to resolving flood issues in Kuala Lumpur by ensuring that the basic function of flood retention ponds is maintained and any development does not happen before the gazettement process is completed.

“As such, Lot 102996 still remains as government land and has not been transferred to any individual or companies.”

Nik Nazmi said approval in principle was to allow a comprehensive study or analysis based on conditions set by DID to be carried out by the applicant while bearing related costs.

However, he emphasised that approval in principle was not a guarantee that the transfer of ownership would be allowed.

He further explained that Bohol’s technical and design requirements reports prepared by DID, which took into account future development and climate change, determined that Bohol pond required 33.1ha of land.

As such, DID requested that the lot remain as a river reserve and retention pond so that the area as a whole would maintain the design requirements of Bohol pond with a storage volume of 1.28 million cubic metres.

At press time, neither Azman nor Nik Nazmi has responded to calls for comments.

https://www.thestar.com.my/metro/metro-news...evelopment-plan

Crazy how these DBKL can approve such project and the minister has not said anything. I've seen this pond since 2008-2015 when I was staying in Malaysia, then I saw it again in Dec 2021 and was shocked how much they have filled up the pond. Kesas highway/surrounding Taman Kinrara will flood even worse because all these retention ponds being used to build new condos. Crazy..

Picture during the great flood of 2021 (taken by my bro):

[attachmentid=11495582]

Next day aftermath (taken by me):

[attachmentid=11495583]

Both pictures taken from Mutiara Bukit Jalil at elevation of around 30 metres

Back in Dec, I bought a TV for my dad to enjoy (to replace our old burn in plasma which is still okay). Back then it was RM6,527.

Today I saja browse through HN Malaysia, and noticed the same TV is now RM 6,727 https://www.harveynorman.com.my/tv-and-audi...h-75hx600k.html

Waa.. RM200 increase in less than 6 months. That is equivalent to a month's lunch money if we consider RM6 per meal.

[attachmentid=10844313]

Hi, as per the above topic.

It's already 2018 and high time instead of politicking, why not we ponder for a moment and imagine the type of air quality you guys are breathing?

Until today, DOE is not giving out PM2.5 readings, and even worse, PM10 reading is not even real time..

Anyone own device that measures your current air quality?

Perhaps ktards should start pushing Yeo Bee Yin to get DOE to come up with PM2.5 reading soon.

PSA: Always check your electrical equipments

Bought this 5 way extension socket from Tesco Malaysia about 3 years ago. Thinking is Sirim certified and with a maximum load of 3000W, should be safe running a 2400W heater and phone charger. Oh boy I was wrong! Today, the plug melted because I turned on the heater and the wires at the plug melted! It's was okay for the past 2 years. My fault for using cheap extension.. I think back then I bought it for around RM40. Lesson learnt, always get something rated at least 4000W load and make sure it's branded.

The brand I used was Sonix model 8655 buatan Malaysia. Realised that the wires they used is quite soft eventho it is 1.25mm^2.

Lesson learnt:

1) All electrical wires have a life span. I always take it for granted that wires will never melt if I seldom use it or using it for lower power electricals such as phone chargers most of the time. I was wrong! Change it even if it looks okay!
2) Don't buy lower quality product thinking that you'll use it temporary then throw it away, because you'll never know it will fail while you're using it..
3) Read reviews and buy only from reputable makers.
4) Always make sure cable is of think good quality type! The heater that I got is rated at 2400W with wire cores of 1.5mm^2 eventho it's made in China by DeLonghi.

I was lucky today (eventho the fuse did not blow!!), melting the whole plug. The plug head wasn't made of good material. Still blaming myself for taking things granted thinking everything sold out there is safe if it's from big retailers. Be an informed consumer and always do your homework before buying any phone chargers or electrical products. It is a life and death matter!

[attachmentid=9421065][attachmentid=9421069][attachmentid=9421076][attachmentid=9421077][attachmentid=9421130]

Eight Years for Drug trafficking

Only 8 years? Damn..people like this should get death sentence..

IPOH: With a wife and a baby to take care of, an unemployed man took to trafficking drugs to take care of his young family.

Sew Teck Keong, then 28, was allegedly persuaded to take up the “job” by friends, who told him he could lead a life of luxury by trafficking drugs.

It was a futile move that has now landed him in jail for eight years.

Judicial Commissioner Noorin Badaruddin, who meted out the sentence, also ordered that Sew be whipped 10 times.

He had pleaded guilty to possessing 62.88g of methamphetamine under Section 39A(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act at the High Court here yesterday.

Sew was initially charged under Section 39B of the same Act, which carries the death penalty for drug trafficking.

According to the facts of the case, policemen arrested Sew as he was alighting from his car near Taman Mutiara in Chemor, about 20km from here, at about 12.30am on Feb 26, 2013.

The drugs were found in the car.

Noorin ordered Sew to serve his jail term from the date of his arrest.

Lawyer J. Harikrishnan, mitigating on behalf of the accused, said Sew and his wife were unemployed and he needed money for the family.

“He was supported by his friends financially and they influenced him to be involved with this (drug) activity.

“At that time, he had no choice as he needed the money,” said Harikrishnan, adding that Sew had been in prison since his arrest and that he had repented and had promised not to repeat the offence.

Harikrishnan said that in pleading guilty Sew had saved the court’s time and cost, adding that his client was a first-time offender and was not highly educated.

In passing judgment, Noorin said the lack of education was not an issue as there were posters and advertisements warning against drug trafficking.

sos dadah: http://www.thestar.com.my/News/Nation/2014...support-family/

Their usefulness and versatility has made them indispensable in a number of business environments, with units available that are handheld or built into vehicles. Although walkie talkies have a limited range, they are free to use and, as a result, cheaper to run than cell phones. Once handsets have been bought and paid for there are no monthly call charges. They are simple and easy to use, with most models featuring a push-to-talk button that allows the user to send messages, and a speaker to relay messages back to the user.

In general, a wide variety of businesses benefit from the use of walkie talkies. They are often used to enhance businesses’ health and safety practices, as public address (PA) systems, and to keep employees informed of urgent information throughout the course of the day. A discussion of 10 businesses that benefit from the use of walkie talkies follows. The benefits to these businesses may be similar to those of a wide range of other enterprises, and one can gain a clear idea of overlapping advantages for one’s own business. Two-way radios can be purchased online or from radio handset dealers.

1. Event Organizers and Convention Center Management
Special events and conventions are usually thronged with attendees and staff. The ability to find one’s staff or key contractors is crucial when organizing large events. For example, chairs can be rearranged or set up in a matter of minutes, or problems with the food delivery or service cleared up in a few moments. Better communication means fewer glitches. In addition, one can contact security or emergency services without any hassle when it is urgent, ensuring the safety and comfort of one’s staff and visitors. People will notice a well-organized event, and managing to present one with few hitches will lead to an increase in business through a well-deserved good reputation.

2. Farms
Farms of any size will benefit from two-way radios. Rural areas often have cellular dead spots where cell phones simply do not work as there is no coverage. In addition to this, workers are spread over a wide area, with teams or individuals attending to different tasks throughout the day. Using two-way radios means that workers can ask for help if they need it and everyone knows who is where and doing what. If a worker in a remote location finds an injured animal, help can be summoned quickly, without the worker needing to return to his or her base or to an area with cell phone reception. In addition, farming equipment is dangerous and can cause serious injuries that, if left untreated, could result in death. Carrying a walkie talkie means that one can shout for help in an emergency, even when working alone.

3. Hotels
A hotel requires a large staff for effective day-to-day operation and happy guests. Two-way radios can be used by just about the entire staff, from those performing reception duties to concierges, bell staff, and the security team. As with events management, the hospitality industry relies on effective communication to ensure that plans work out with a minimum of problems. If more discreet communications are required, staff can be equipped with headsets or earpieces.

4. Construction and Related Trades
On a construction site, walkie talkies are essential to inform a large number of people of crucial information immediately. In some cases, this can save lives. In addition, construction sites can be hazardous environments, and a fast response when a worker is injured could save his or her life. Time will also be saved looking for people and tools. Tradesmen on site can communicate with each other about specific jobs, integrating functions more easily.

5. Security
Security teams are only effective if they can communicate with each other without delay. Whether they are patrolling an empty building or working in a crowded shopping mall, guards need to keep in touch with each other for their own safety and to ensure the safety of the persons and property they are protecting. In addition to allowing security staff to keep in touch with each other, walkie talkies allow staff to stay in contact with a base or central office in order to request assistance from emergency personnel or police when needed. One should consider investing in earpieces to keep communication discreet, especially in crowded areas. Security staff that work in plain clothes, like store detectives, will benefit from wireless earpieces and discreet push-to-talk systems.

6. Retail Stores
To keep one’s customers happy one should provide the best customer service in the business. Enabling staff to communicate without leaving the sales floor means that the maximum amount of coverage is available without sacrificing efficient stock levels. Sales staff can contact warehouse staff to replenish stock levels or to swap damaged items with pristine ones. For an added layer of protection, staff can change channels to contact security staff if they observe suspicious behavior, or they can contact a cleaner to quickly clean up spills and remove trip hazards. Although employee turnover is generally high in retail, new staff will learn how to use radios in minutes due to their simple design.

7. Medical Offices
Nurses, doctors, and administrative staff can stay connected via walkie talkie to improve efficiency and eliminate running back and forth between the doctor’s office, the waiting room, treatment rooms, and supply rooms. In addition, clients will have the added peace of mind that a medical emergency will prompt a quick response. To keep client details secure and protect people’s privacy, earpieces or headsets can be used in public areas.

8. Car Dealerships
The success of a car dealership also hinges on customer service and customer satisfaction. People spend substantial amounts of money on new cars, and shoddy service will not inspire them to spend their money at one’s dealership. After all, one wants to be assured of excellent after-sales service when buying a car. If a customer wants to see a specific car in a specific color but that car is buried at the back of the lot, simply let a member of staff know that the car needs to be brought to the display area. Receiving great service will mean that customers gain trust in one’s business, making them more secure in their purchase. Happy customers offer the best form of advertising for one’s business, and excellent communication between staff members is the first step in keeping customers happy.

9. Caterers
While success in the catering industry relies heavily on providing excellent food, it is also affected by one’s customer service. Walkie talkies allow front of house serving staff to alert kitchen staff when food levels are running low, or when it is nearly time to start serving the next course. In addition, kitchen staff will know what is needed in a timely manner, meaning that customers’ needs are met quickly and efficiently. Supervisors can monitor channels to stay aware of issues and concerns as they arise, and resolve them as quickly as possible.

10. Warehouses
Warehouse staff is often loading and unloading vehicles, stacking shelving, retrieving orders, and shipping items or item lots. Because workers are on the move, keeping in touch in the maze of shelves can be a challenge. Good communication and an awareness of staff positions and tasks will help the warehousing operation run smoothly and efficiently, keeping workers productive. In addition, being in touch constantly means that people can ask for help in case of injury or emergency. Working in a warehouse around loading machinery means that workers are more at risk of injury.

Sudanese escapes gallows

PUTRAJAYA : A Sudanese national escaped the gallows when the Federal Court set aside his death sentence today, for the murder of his girlfriend's three-year-old daughter, four years ago.
After the verdict was delivered by Court of Appeal president Tan Sri Md Raus Sharif, family members and friends of former college student Mohannad Taha Ismail, who were in court, were in tears and hugged each other.
Outside the court, they shouted in joy, "Alhamdulillah" (All Praise be to Allah) and some of them wept.
The court made the ruling after allowing Mohannad Taha's final appeal against the conviction and death sentence imposed on him by the Shah Alam High Court on Sept 30, 2011.
In a unanimous decision, Md Raus said after hearing submissions from both parties, the court was of the view that based on the evidence presented, it found it was unsafe to uphold the sentence against the appellant (Mohannad Taha).
"Therefore, the appeal is allowed, we set aside the conviction and death sentence on the appellant," he said when chairing a five-member panel comprising justices Datin Paduka Zaleha Zahari, Datuk Hasan Lah, Datuk Jeffrey Tan Kok Wha and Datuk Seri Mohamed Apandi Ali.
On Oct 15, 2012, the Court of Appeal upheld the death sentence imposed by the Shah Alam High Court on Mohannad Taha after finding him guilty of the murder of Aaliyah Ayman Hussin Abdullah.
He was charged with committing the offence at the Venice Hill Condominium in Cheras between 7.30pm and 8.30pm on Oct 12, 2009.
Earlier, counsel Hisyam Teh Poh Teik representing Mohannad Taha, submitted there was no clear evidence to prove that his client had caused severe bleeding of the cranium on the victim as no one in the house could have seen him (Mohannad Taha) shaking the girl.
He argued that the evidence of the mother of the girl could not be relied upon as her statement to the police and her evidence in court contradicted each other.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Iskandar Ahmad submitted that an inference should have been drawn on the appellant as he had been staying in the house, together with the victim and her mother for three months.-- BERNAMA

Read more: Sudanese escapes gallows over girlfriend’s daughter murder - Latest - New Straits Times http://www.nst.com.my/latest/sudanese-esca...2#ixzz2tB8LEQJa

SAD CASE..

who killed the poor girl?! anyone still remember this?
