Parents who kept their son, five, in a cat cage and scalded him to death are jailed for 27 years with the father also facing 24 lashes in Singapore

A mother and father who kept their five-year-old son in a cat cage before scalding him to death have been jailed for 27 years.

Ridzuan Mega Abdul Rahman, 28, and wife Azlin Arujunah, also 28, repeatedly scolded their son in boiling water at the family home in Singapore three years ago.

Father Ridzuan Mega Abdul Rahman was also sentenced to 24 lashes with a cane.

Mother Azlin Arujunah will serve an extra year in prison in lieu of caning after the judge declared they were equally to blame for the boy's death.

Prosecutors have described the case, which was heard at Singapore's High Court, as 'one of the worst cases of child abuse'.

The trial, which began on November 12, heard how their five-year-old son had died in October 2016 after being scalded by 198F (92C) water which had caused burns to 75 per cent of his body.

In total the couple scalded the boy with hot water on four occasions between October 15 and 22, 2016, at their one-bedroom apartment in Toa Payoh, Singapore.

On one occasion, the boy yelled 'are you crazy or what?,' which angered the parents into dousing him with more steaming liquid, prosecutors said.

On the day of his death, October 22, 2016, the boy was allegedly confined to a cat cage.

His mother wanted to bathe him but the child refused. His was called to discipline him and he poured a flood of hot water over his calf and back, the court heard.

The boy then toppled forward and stopped moving.

Rather than immediately seeking medical attention, the parents waited six hours to take the boy to hospital.

On the first day of the trial the court heard how the five-year-old was kept in a cat cage and tortured with heated spoons and pliers for months before he died.

His death was caused by blows to the head and a deluge of 198F water poured over his back and calves, prosecutors said.

Pictures of the boy's injuries were shown on a screen in court.

He had a fracture to his nose and bruising on his limbs, scalp and lips as well as his gums being torn, the pathologist said.

The child, who has not been named due to a court order, died just a day after he was admitted to hospital.

A foster family had taken the boy in shortly after his birth in 2011 but he later returned to his biological parents in 2015.

The pair, who are unemployed and have other children, also confined the child to a pet cage, pinched him with a pair of pliers, hit him with a broom and burned his palm with a heated spoon.

The cage measured just 91cm long, 58cm wide and 70cm tall, the Straits Times reported.

During the sentencing, Justice Valerie Thean described confining the boy to a cage as 'extremely cruel'.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Tan Wen Hsien said the boy had suffered a 'fate worse than death'.

The pair were originally charged for murder with common intention to inflict fatal scald injuries on the boy, but were formally acquitted of murder in June and instead convicted of causing grievous hurt by dangerous means for the acts of scalding.

The prosecution has since filed an appeal against the murder acquittal.

PETALING JAYA: Yet another video involving a council officer has gone viral.

A man with an umbrella and an enforcement officer from the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) were seen arguing in the video that went viral on Thursday (Feb 13).

The man then struck the officer with an umbrella and the officer retaliated by punching and dropping him to the ground.

In a statement Friday (Feb 14), MPSJ president Noraini Roslan said the council officer was carrying out his duties to clamp a vehicle that was obstructing traffic at the commercial area in USJ 9, Subang Jaya.

“The car owner was displeased that his car was clamped; he tried to free his car from the wheel clamp before scolding and hitting the officer, which led to the officer reacting.

“The traffic offence and hitting of the officer was evident. At the same time, we seriously view the reaction of the officer.

“Following this incident, we have taken him out of duty while we continue to investigate. A thorough and fair investigation will be carried out immediately, ” she said.

She added that members of the public who are not satisfied with the action of enforcement officers can make an official report with the council or the Public Complaints Bureau (PCB), which is under the Prime Minister’s Department.

Meanwhile, Subang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Risikin Satiman said the MPSJ officer had lodged a police report.

“We will investigate this under Sections 186,332, and 324 of the Penal Code.

“I urge netizens to stop spreading the video to avoid negative speculations regarding the incident, ” he said in a video statement.

Speaking to the press after a site visit to a school on Friday, Subang Jaya assemblyman Michelle Ng said: "Both parties are at fault.”

Earlier, in a statement issued on Thursday, Ng said she was disappointed and sad with the violent reaction of the MPSJ enforcement officer.

“Even though it was wrong of the man to hit the officer, he should not have reacted in such a violent manner, ” she said, adding that the enforcement officer should apologise to the individual.

“MPSJ should also take the necessary steps to ensure that all enforcement officers received the right training to handle tense situations like this and that such incidents should not recur," she added.

吉隆坡交通调查与执法组主任祖基菲里助理总监表示，4名男子于周三深夜分乘2辆经过改装的轿车，在安邦吉隆坡高架大道参与非法飙车活动。他说，涉案者非但在大道上超速驾驶及互相追逐，更数次危险超车差点造成车祸发生。

他指出，交警于当晚11时，派出12名警员前往大道出口设立路障进行取缔，成功将涉案人士逮捕归案，当场逮捕4名年龄介于18至26岁的巫裔男子归案，并充公一辆宝腾勇士及一辆宝腾太子轿车。

“警方调查后发现，被充公的轿车经过违法改装，目前已被扣押接受调查。”

祖基菲里揭露，2名轿车司机皆没有驾驶执照，其中一人为年仅18岁大学生，另一人则是技工。警方目前援引1987年陆路交通法令第42条文进行调查。

I know maybe it is inappropriate to write something like this here but i would want to treat it as a memory. Since you couldnt find a single report about his death.

Tommy works every weekend in KL. On the 8th July 2013 midnight, he sent his final email and decided to call it a day. Drove his Iswara home and stopped by the traffic light near jalan duta (Publika area). Out of sudden, a BMW 5 series came from no where and hit straight to his driver seat. He was knocked from his driver seat to the passenger seat. Killed Instantly. DIED on the spot. And the clever driver, ran away and left his BMW there. No where to be found.

On the 8th July 2013 afternoon, the driver has been caught and kept in the lokap for investigation. My friend’s body was sent back to Kuching around 6pm through MAS Cargo.

9th July 2013. There is ZERO article about the accident in all the newspaper in Kuching and Kuala Lumpur. A lot of us search in the internet and we cant even find a SINGLE article about it. Normally if there is death in an accident, it will be published. No. Not this time. Went to pay the last respect for Tommy. Get more detailed news from the direct person and parents. A Brooklyn man claiming to be infected with the coronavirus coughed on FBI agents who were investigating him for hoarding medical supplies, the US Attorney’s Office said Monday.

Baruch Feldheim, 43, is facing charges of assault and making false statements to the feds on Sunday outside his Borough Park home where he allegedly peddled and stored massive amounts of N95 respirator masks, federal officials said.

Feldheim is also accused of price-gouging. On March 18, he’s suspected of selling a New Jersey doctor about 1,000 of the masks for $12,000, a markup of roughly 700 percent, authorities said.

The accused fraudster also directed another doctor to an Irvington, NJ, auto repair shop to pick up another order. There, the doctor reported to investigators that Feldheim was allegedly hoarding enough medical supplies “to outfit an entire hospital.”

The materials included hand sanitizers, Clorox wipes, chemical cleaning agents and surgical supplies.

By last Monday, Feldheim was operating from his Brooklyn home, offering to push surgical gowns to a nurse, the feds said.

Two days later, the suspected hoarder received a gigantic shipment at his home of about eight pallets of face masks.

FBI agents then staked out his house, first noticing empty boxes of N95 masks outside.

On Sunday, they said they witnessed “multiple instances” of people approaching Feldheim’s residence and walking away with what appeared to be medical supplies.

“When the agents were within four to five feet of him, Feldheim allegedly coughed in their direction without covering his mouth,” the US attorney’s release said. “At that point, Feldheim told the FBI agents that that he had the Coronavirus,” the statement said.

Feldheim then allegedly lied to FBI agents regarding his possession and sale of medical supplies.

He falsely told the agents that he worked for a company that bought and sold PPE and that he never took physical custody of the materials.

Following Feldheim’s arrest, the FBI on Monday night raided a warehouse on Pennsylvania Avenue in an industrial section of Linden, NJ, that housed Feldhim’s suspected stash of 80,000 masks, a source said.

KUALA LUMPUR: An amateur football player who exercised in the open was fined RM800 in default of a month in jail by a Magistrate's Court here in Ampang for flouting the movement control order (MCO).

Ahmad Lutfi Azizul Rahman, 22, pleaded guilty after the charge was read out before Magistrate Normaizan Rahim on Wednesday (April 1).

The FC Selayang player was accused of moving around within an infected local area outside of permitted reasons at a condominium on Jalan Bukit Indah 3/3, Bukit Indah, Ampang, at 5.15pm on March 27.

The offence under Rule 3(1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures Within the Infected Local Areas) Regulations 2020 carries a maximum fine of RM1,000 or six months imprisonment or both if convicted.

According to the statement of facts, a team of policemen and a staff member from the the Ampang MP's office were patrolling the area when they found Lutfi exercising near the condo's swimming pool.

The accused was unhappy when he was told to return home.

He was told a second time to return home, but refused to do so. Instead, he provoked the officers.

An officer then gave Lutfi a warning and told him he was flouting the law before he finally agreed to return home.

At the same court, five other men, including two Indonesians, also pleaded guilty to violating the MCO.

E. Diviyan, 18; C. S. Divyaanaidu, 27; Putera Hang Jebat Mohamed Jin, 32; and Indonesians Sahirul Anan, 40, and Sunardi, 38, admitted to moving around within an infected local area without permitted reasons during the MCO.

They committed the offences at Taman Cheras Indah, Taman Ukay Perdana and Wangsa Melawati between March 22 and March 29.

Magistrate Normaizan sentenced the men to RM600 fine, in default of a month in jail each.

DPP Norhashimah Hashim appeared for the prosecution.

my property agent promised that i was entitled to their project promotion rebate. let's call it abc rebate.

i remember agent told me this abc rebate will be pay to me after pilling done.

now the project is in schedule 2(b). (and im starting to service the loan interest).

then i asked agent about my rebate but now he say i will be pay upon VP.

i check back the document signed (booking form) and it mentioned as below:

"abc rebate 3% (item 4) to be set off against 2nd progressive billing."

is there anything i misunderstood here? sifu pls advice.

Jakarta: Seorang pakar bius di sebuah hospital di sini meninggal dunia selepas bertugas selama empat hari tanpa henti kerana menggantikan rakannya yang bercuti menyambut Aidilfitri.

Dr Stefanus Taofik dilaporkan meninggal dunia ketika sedang berehat di sebuah bilik di hospital Bintaro Jaya pada malam semalam.

Media Indonesia melaporkan, Stefanus yang sudah berkahwin dan mempunyai seorang anak lelaki berusia setahun meninggal dunia selepas bertugas selama empat hari tanpa henti.

Stefanus turut terpaksa bertugas di dua lagi hospital berhampiran kerana semua pakar bius di hospital berkenaan bercuti.

Kematian Stefanus diumumkan dalam akaun Twitter perubatan Indonesia, @blogdokter yang turut memuat naik gambar doktor muda berkenaan.

“Seorang lagi doktor meninggal dunia saat menjalankan tugas, Dr Stefanus Taofik.

“Seorang pakar bius harus berada di setiap pembedahan di dewan bedah dan kadangkala bertugas sampai pagi,” katanya.

Kematian Stefanus itu turut diratapi dunia perubatan Indonesia serta pengguna media sosial di negara berkenaan.

Stefanus dipercayai mengalami serangan jantung kerana terlalu penat bekerja dan terpaksa bertugas di tiga buah hospital pada masa yang sama.

“Kekurangan rehat dan makan serta minum yang tidak teratur kerana berjuang menyelamatkan nyawa pesakit akhirnya menyebabkan jantungnya sendiri terhenti,” kata seorang pengguna media sosial.

Rohingyan girls forced to become child brides

THE slight girl in a turquoise headscarf held back tears as she recalled what happened when she fled to Malaysia from Burma‘s violence-hit Rakhine state. Just 12-years-old at the time, she was forced to wed a man she did not know, and who was more than a decade older than her.

The teenager, who is not being named by Reuters because she is still only 13, is like hundreds of Rohingya girls escaping persecution, violence and apartheid-like conditions in Rakhine, only to be sold into marriage to Rohingya men in neighbouring Malaysia, migrant groups and community members said.

Separated from her family while escaping to Malaysia, she said she was caught by traffickers and held for weeks in a filthy and brutal jungle camp near the Thai-Malaysian border with dozens of others. Her captors told her a Rohingya man was willing to give her freedom if she agreed to marry him.

“The (trafficking) agent said I had been sold to a man and I asked, how could do they do that?… My heart was heavy and I was scared,” the girl said in an interview in Kuala Lumpur.

Reuters could not independently verify certain aspects of her story but her mother confirmed she was held in the camp for weeks before being released.

It has been common for Rohingya women escaping Burma to wed Rohingya men in the country they fled to, usually through marriages arranged between families, rights groups said. Some of these arranged marriages would be for underage girls.

But a growing number are becoming victims of human traffickers who sell women and girls to Rohingya men as brides.

Matthew Smith, executive director of the Southeast Asia-based migrant and refugee protection group Fortify Rights, said the group had seen a “significant” rise in the number of child brides following increased violence in Rakhine.

There are no official statistics on how many girls have been sold into marriage. In 2015, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said in a report it had identified 120 Rohingya child brides in Malaysia but it was unclear how many were trafficking victims.

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak has spoken out strongly in the past few months against Buddhist Burma over its handling of the violence in Rakhine and the Rohingyas’ plight.

But rights groups say Malaysia, which has not signed the U.N. refugee convention, has been complicit in the abuse of Rohingya asylum-seekers because they are treated as illegal migrants with no official access to jobs, healthcare or education. They live in poverty working illegally in restaurants or construction sites.

The Malaysian government launched a project this month that enables 300 Rohingya people to be employed, a move welcomed by rights groups.

The Malaysian government did not return requests seeking comment for this story.

A former trafficking agent, a Rohingya man identified only as Ali, told Reuters there is a growing demand for Rohingya brides. Smuggling syndicates can get up to 7,000 ringgit ($1,557.29) for each girl’s release to their family or sale to a man.

Ali kept guard at a jungle trafficking camp near the Thai-Malaysian border. He said women and girls travelling alone or whose families were unable to pay the release fees were sold.

“There were girls there who were about 15 or 16. They have no choice…” he said.

Yasmin Zokir Ahmad, 18, recalled how her husband, a Rohingya who worked as a grass-cutter in Kuala Lumpur, paid a trafficking agent 3,500 ringgit to marry her two years ago.

This was after a harrowing nine-month journey to Malaysia, which included a voyage by sea and a long period in a Thai jungle camp where she was often denied food or water.

“I didn’t have a choice. I needed to marry him because I need support and protection, and I want to live a life of dignity,” Yasmin said. Her husband declined to comment. – Reuters

IPOH 11 April - Sepasang suami isteri hari ini dihadapkan ke Mahkamah Majistret di sini atas tuduhan menukar tanda harga tilam bayi di sebuah pusat beli-belah di sini, Jumaat lalu.

Tertuduh Saddam Abdullah, 57, dan Siti Aishah Abdullah, 56, yang tidak bekerja, bagaimanapun mengaku tidak bersalah selepas pertuduhan dibacakan di hadapan Majistret Siti Salwa Ja’afar.

Mengikut pertuduhan, tertuduh didakwa menipu juruwang Nur Ayuni Hisammuddin dengan menukar tanda harga pada tilam bayi jenama C-Cbhaus Pe Fold daripada harga RM233 kepada RM26.90 di pusat beli-belah Aeon Big Falim di sini pada 7 April lalu, kira-kira pukul 11.17 pagi.

Pertuduhan yang dikemukakan mengikut Seksyen 417 Kanun Keseksaan oleh Timbalan Pendakwa Raya, Naidatul Athirah Azman itu boleh membawa kepada hukuman penjara maksimum lima tahun atau denda atau kedua-duanya sekali.

Mahkamah bagaimanapun membenarkan kedua-dua tertuduh dijamin sebanyak RM3,500 dengan seorang penjamin bagi setiap seorang dan sebutan semula kes ditetapkan pada 3 Mei depan.

Kedua-dua tertuduh diwakili oleh peguam, Raja Mohd. Iskandar Zulkharnian Raja Abdul Malek. - UTUSAN ONLINE
