Resignation

Just want to start a topic of resignation. I see we have a lot of topic about getting job but

Just want or alert people on resignation procedure, when is consider the effective date, do you need to inform HR and so on.

I dont have alot of information with me.. but I know when we tender a resignation letter we should have a copy send to HR as well.

Some company set 3 months if a staff want to resign and yet they only give a month notice when they are firing the staff.

is there a law helping ppl in this situation?

Also isnt 3 months is way too long?
