CEO Christoph Mueller interview

Sorry too long,

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

EXCERPTS from the interview with Malaysia Airlines Bhd group chief executive officer Christoph Mueller.

Q: What is the reason for choosing Emirates as a codeshare partner?

A: Because Emirates clearly gave us the largest network extension, the largest choice for Malaysia Airlines customers to really reach every point in the world. So we have our network, the Emirates network, and the network of the other partner airlines like KLM, American Airlines and so on.

It was a purely commercial decision, but of course we are glad that Emirates is the carrier with the highest brand value. The brand is worth US$7.7 billion (RM32 billion). I think we should be honoured to be able to sign up with such a high-profile airline.

Q: How long will the codeshare deal with Emirates run?

A: Generally, you would say approximately five years on a revolving basis and it’s renewed, but I think you always get married with the intention that it lasts forever, no?

Q: Some sceptics or airline analysts think this is more like a step back for Malaysia Airlines instead of growing its own network, its own routes. Your response?

A: We have always said we want to grow again, but what happens if you grow a loss-making airline? You grow your losses. The loss-making machine just goes faster and produces more losses.

That is what most sceptics got entirely wrong. You start growing before you are cash-flow positive. We have to respect the sequence. We first have to stop losing money. The moment that we are positive, every growth will improve our bottom-line.

If it is before that, it will just increase our losses. And to do it at the same time has never worked. I know only one example where growth or market share growth and turnaround coincided, and that’s in Aer Lingus but it’s unprecedented. It’s the only case in airline history where market share gains and turning around were happening at the same time.

Q: So the Emirates model is one strategic plan for you to ultimately rebuild your own network?

A: Yes, of course. When we are positive we can reconsider a lot of destinations. I always quote the example in my last job, I had to do a very drastic measure. In the first week, I cancelled California, San Francisco and Los Angeles because they were the most loss-making routes and we stepped back. Three years later after we were positive, we made San Francisco the most profitable route ever in the Aer Lingus network.

I see that happening here, but I would say (some) destinations we took off our network included traditional routes reflecting the trade relationships of Malaysia 10 to 15 years ago. For example, the Netherlands for oil business, Rotterdam for palm oil, and so on. They have been replaced partly with new trade relationships. Right now, China has become such an important economic partner of Malaysia that we need to reflect that in our route network.

I envisage growth more in those places where Malaysia has economic interests or places where we can source inbound tourists and that coincides with the example of China perfectly.

Q: Are there any other airlines you plan to work with?

A: We are not talking about cooperation only in passenger network. We also seek cooperation in our cargo network. Of course it’s less prominent. Cargo is the most successful airline in our group.

It will be profitable already this year. It’s really a big success story and cargo is a perfect example if trade relations change. If all of a sudden the trade between Malaysia and Taiwan or Korea is tripling, we might have to look for an alliance partner which is covering that region, able to distribute the traffic beyond the point where we fly ourselves. That is how it works.

Another example is Iran. Iran was off the landscape for decades. Now it’s coming back and everybody wants to do business there. It’s not only codeshare but to also look for general sales agents to sell your tickets and all that. Our passengers very soon will be able to fly with a Malaysia Airlines ticket to Teheran via Dubai, and of course we want to sell Malaysia Airlines tickets also in Teheran.

Q: What happens to the oneworld alliance?

A: Nothing. We are proud members of the oneworld alliance. Oneworld couldn’t offer us the same network extension. For example, there is no oneworld carrier in Africa. Basically, it’s complementary to what we have as oneworld and they are not in conflict with each other. We even have one codeshare agreement which is not Emirates or oneworld, which is KLM that is in SkyTeam. In today’s world, that is allowed.

Q: What are the plans for your fleet?

A: Our fleet is very straightforward. We will operate 54 B737-800s. These are the aircraft we currently fly. We need exactly the same number as before. We will continue flying our Airbus A330-300s, 15 of them, the same number as before, and we will refurbish them with new Business Class seats. And we will continue flying our six A380s until they are replaced by the A350-900s.

Q: Why did you stop flying to Dubai?

A: Dubai was heavily loss-making. First of all, we had only 38 to 40 per cent load factor, which nobody can fly in a profitable way. Emirates has 4.5 times the seat capacity on that route than we have. So, if someone is for business in Dubai, they will fly sooner or later on Emirates because it gives them more choices of flights.

Another important thing is the Dubai-KL route is sold 90 per cent out of Dubai because Malaysia is one of the most attractive tourism destinations for people residing there, particularly in the summer, and you know why? It’s very hot.

There’s an old rule that if the demand is entirely in the home country of a carrier… Everybody on the frequent flyer programme of Emirates who lives in Dubai, the likelihood that they would buy Malaysia Airlines tickets and have no miles or just collect miles once a year on one carrier is simply not attractive as a value proposition. So the Dubai-KL route is a Dubai route, sold out of Dubai. There are very few Malaysians who travel to Dubai as a final destination. Why should they? It’s wonderful here.

Q: What are your plans with regard to Firefly and MASwings?

A: Let me start with MASwings. We are very committed to continue providing rural air services to East Malaysia. That is one of our key missions as a national carrier, to also connect the more remote places. We are very proud of MASwings. It is a very wonderful company.

It has a really good team. It’s a small company and they know each other well and they have an incredible punctuality. Their punctuality is always above 95 per cent, so it’s a very reliable carrier. They cope with challenges of that remote part of the world very well. They fly from non-serviced airport runways.

So, it’s a nice thing that we want to continue. Firefly has conquered a market niche out of Subang. It’s very much appreciated by the travelling public. Singapore comes to mind but also Penang and other attractive places. They fight for their place in competition. Competition is determined by overcapacity, that is also an observation I have. We have too many ATRs flying in Malaysia. The market would be better served with less. But it’s a good product and we are very committed there.

TL;DR
> Airbus A350-900 will replace the existing A380-800
> Airbus A330-300 will continue as usual
> KUL-DXB route is unprofitable, now terminated and replaced by Emirates in conjunction with MAB-Emirates sharecode partner.
> MAB seeking for cooperation in cargo network
source - http://www.nst.com.my/news/2016/03/130767/...ercial-decision

The contractors can fix the cracks in a month. It's just like the roads you and I use everyday.

"If there are potholes, patch them. When there's an uneven surface, you resurface it," he was quoted as saying.

Rush job

Despite the assurance, the report quoted another source as saying that the rush to meet the completion deadline may have contributed to the defects and this may cause further delays.

"There is concern that in the rush to meet deadlines, work on the runway and taxiway could have started before the soil had properly settled.

"They say if the soil continues to shift, major remedial works may be necessary, thus raising the possibility of further delays," the report said.

MAHB is targeting for KLIA2, which can manage up to 45 million passengers a year, to be fully operational by May 2 next year.

The project which began work in 2010 had been plagued with delays.

It was first due to be completed at the end of 2011 but was later pushed to October 2012 and then to June 2013 and now January of next year.

The project has also seen spiralling cost, with the price tag almost doubling from an initial RM2 billion to RM3.9 billion.

TS ada selowpoke ka?
Can buy this newspaper from Popular Bookstore.
SOS

Peugeot 2008 at KLIMS13

The yet-to-be-launched Peugeot 2008 will be previewed at the Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show 2013 (KLIMS13) this week, where order books will open for the new B-segment crossover. Additionally, freebies will be given out for any Peugeot bookings made at the show.

On the equipment list are Smart Park Assist, a panoramic roof with mood lighting, a colour touch-screen with USB and Bluetooth connectivity, a Smart One-Touch Foldable rear seat and a six-speaker Arkamys 3D sound system. Safety kit includes six airbags and ESP. That’s all the info we’re given for now, but more details are sure to trickle in very soon – including of its powertrain.

The Peugeot 2008 crossover made its debut in February in Geneva. At 4,160 mm long, 1,740 mm wide and 1,550 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,540 mm, the 1,045-kg crossover is 96 mm taller and 200 mm longer than the 208 supermini on which it’s based, with a 25-mm higher ground clearance. The interior is largely similar to the 208′s, but the 2008 gets an interesting-looking aircraft-style handbrake.

Nice interior

Handbrake..
SOS from Unker Paul Tan

Connect it to the car via Bluetooth Low Energy and information such as fuel consumption, average speed, vehicle telematics and performance data can be had – pretty handy if you had a car that could do 0-100 km/h in two seconds.

In addition, the watch also tracks the user’s social performance across Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram through Nissan’s proprietary Social Speed software.

Carrying a lithium battery, the watch can be charged by micro-USB, with a battery life of over seven days under normal usage. The packaging has been made using tyres and rubber from the racetrack. Three colours are available – black, white and the flagship black and red.
