SquareSoft pegi mati

In a recent financial briefing, former Square Enix president Yoichi Wada discussed how Square Enix arrived at their sales forecasts for some of the biggest games they’ve released over the last 12 months. The three titles in question are: Sleeping Dogs, Hitman Absolution and Tomb Raider.

As previously reported, despite high sales, all three games sold below expectations in North America and Europe. Wada shares:

“Let’s talk about Sleeping Dogs: we were looking at selling roughly 2~2.5 million units in the EUR/NA market based on its game content, genre and Metacritic scores. In the same way, game quality and Metacritic scores led us to believe that Hitman had potential to sell 4.5~5 million units and 5~6 million units for Tomb Raider in EUR/NA and Japanese markets combined.

“Of course, we want to hedge risk in budgeting these units directly into the forecast, therefore we base the forecast on 80-90% of the total sales potential of each title. However, it is disappointing that our results fell below these marks.”

For reference, Sleeping Dogs has moved 1.75 million copies, Hitman Absolution 3.6 million and Tomb Raider 3.4 million.

Wada says that Square Enix’s revenue model is outdated and that the company’s selling capacity has been “far weaker than we ever imagined” in North America and Europe. As a result, Square Enix are incurring an extraordinary loss in an “effort to sort out items not achieving expected revenue levels, through scrapping those items and terminating production”.

Some of the content being scrapped was in development at studios in Japan. A loss of more than 2 billion yen originates from Japanese studios, where certain productions have already been halted and work scrapped. Additionally, Square Enix say that they recently launched a new division in the U.S. to develop casual games for phones, but were forced to close it down after things didn’t go well. The company expects a 1 billion yen loss as a result of its closure. Total losses resulting from this “Loss on Disposal of Content” at Square Enix amount to 4 billion yen.

A further loss of 3.5 billion yen is expected from “Loss on Evaluation of Content,” where Square will make downward revisions to their prospective yields for every game title and overhaul their business models. A 2 billion yen loss in this regard will come from Japan and 1.5 billion yen from Europe and North America.

Additionally, a company-wide loss of 2 billion yen is expected in relation to re-structuring Square Enix. In total, all of these losses amount to 10 billion yen.

While console game sales were sluggish, social games are showing “solid performance,” Wada says, with continuous growth in net sales. Square expect net sales from their Social Gaming and Others category to reach 20 billion yen in fiscal year 2013. Profit margins continue to improve steadily and Square say that their social game development teams exchange expertise with each other on a daily basis. Over the next year, Square plan to focus on providing social games to China and Korea, and gradually expand to the entire Asian region.

In the wake of the company’s losses, Wada will be stepping
down as Square’s president. As previously reported, Yosuke Matsuda will be replacing Yoichi Wada as Square Enix’s new president.

Pegi Mati

YOLO!

Intel, partnering with Safaricoma Kenyan based provider, has announced a new smartphone, the Yolo, headed to African markets. Back at CES, Intel took to the stage to introduce Lexington, which is their new processor targeted at emerging markets. The Yolo is the first smartphone to have that chip and looks positioned to make quite an impact in emerging markets.

The Intel Yolo will contain:

3.5-inch screen (320 x 420)
1.2GHz processor
512MB RAM
4GB internal storage
micro-SD slot that supports up to 32GB
Bluetooth 2.1
Android 4.04 (Ice Cream Sandwich)
5MP camera
The specs are low to mid-range because that's what this phone is aimed at. Intel wants to make a real push in emerging markets and the Yolo looks poised to do just that. Kenya will be the first market in Africa to get the phone, but we're betting that we'll see it in other markets soon. The phone will cost Ksh 10,999, which is about $125.It will also come bundled with 500MB.

You Only Live Once

Oh Look, An Oven That Runs Android

This is an oven, an oven with an embedded 7-inch touch screen that runs Android. It's called the Dacor Discovery IQ Wall Oven. Here are some specs.

Samsung S5PV210 1GHz CPU
PowerVR SGX 540 GPU
512 MB DDR2 RAM
16 GB Storge
"Hard Drive Expansion: 32GB Max"
WiFi

The oven runs Android 4.0.3 (I can't believe I'm typing this) in tablet mode. Dacor has an app that will let you do oven things like adjust the temperature, set a timer, and show the time. You can even remotely do oven things from another Android device.

Everything works, although using the navigation buttons is a little strange because the tablet isn't flush with the front of the oven. There's a lip that makes hitting anything on the edge of the screen a bit of a challenge. It runs like a budget Android tablet, you will see some stuttering while swiping from screen to screen. On the plus side, it comes pre-loaded with the Play Store, so you can easily play Angry Birds while cooking one.

We made the mistake of asking the nearby oven salesman for a demo of the oven, and he ended up talking about BTUs and things like that. So here's a very-much oven-centric overview of this oven. You've been warned.

Oven Beb,Gile Beb

Google tak suka Windows

Google is gradually building out its apps portfolio for non-Android platforms, notably iOS. In recent months -- and since being pulled from the platform at OS level -- we've seen Google release dedicated YouTube, GMail and now Maps applications for Apple's mobile OS. But, what about Windows? Windows Phone 8 is gathering momentum, and Windows 8 will eventually be on billions of machines worldwide, or so you'd think, surely the next investment of time for Google?

Not so, it seems. Clay Bavor, a Google Product Manager, went on record speaking to V3 about where the future may lie for Google expanding their apps to the latest Windows platforms:

We have no plans to build out Windows apps. We are very careful about where we invest and will go where the users are but they are not on Windows Phone or Windows 8. If that changes, we would invest there, of course

Ouch. It all makes perfect business sense of course, if there's no market, Google wouldn't target it. Both platforms are in their infancy, and we'd expect -- from Windows 8 especially -- increased user numbers to come with time. But, we all know the best way to get the best Google experience on our devices,
right?

Benci Windows
Tab Nabi

Fuhu - the creator of the nabi and nabi 2 tablets - is on fire. Just a little over one week ago, they announced the nabi Jr., a new 5" tablet designed for small children, and today they're back at it with a tablet designed just for tweens: the nabi XD.

Now, I know what you're thinking: Seriously? A tablet just for tweens? I'm not going to lie - I, too, was skeptical of the usefulness of another specialty tablet for kids. And then I read the specs, looked at the pictures, and caught the price. I changed my mind almost immediately - this thing is seriously impressive.

10.1" 1366x786 IPS display
Quad-core Tegra 3 processor
16GB or 32GB storage capacity
Front and rear cameras
NFC
Aluminum body
Android 4.1
...and it's only $250 for 16GBs! With this tablet, it seems that Fuhu has managed to do what we've wanted manufacturers to do all along: put out a quality device with top specs at a reasonable price. Not only that, but I think the nabi XD looks pretty awesome, too.

The XD also features a pretty nifty sounding UI. Dubbed Kanzi, the custom UI will feature proprietary widgets, icons, and "gadgets," all of which can be dynamically arranged across the homescreens. The screens are also location and time aware, and can automatically transition throughout various setups according to the day/place by using custom rules; from the sound of it, it reminds me a lot of Chameleon Launcher for tablets.

Since the XD is designed for tweens, you can expect that it'll be used for homework, too. No worries - with a full productivity suite and optional pad-folio silicone keyboard, this thing's as serious about getting things done as it is about games and fun (no, that rhyme wasn't intentional, but feel free to use it in a jingle).

So, when can you get one? The nabi XD will be available in a "limited release" beginning in late-December, with a full release coming in mid-January. The 16GB version will hit the streets at an unprecedented $250, with a 32GB model coming in at $350.

Fuhu, Inc. Unveils nabi™ XD: The World’s First Android Ultraportable for Tweens at $249

Fuhu, Inc. defines a new market for tablet users with its nabi™ XD, positioned as a tween’s first tablet with a keyboard dedicated to homework, gaming, social networking and kid-safe browsing

EL SEGUNDO, Calif., Dec. 12, 2012 – Fuhu, Inc., the leader in tablets made just for kids, today unveiled the new nabi™ XD: an ultraportable tablet that combines the best of a notebook and tablet PC with an amazing 10.1-inch high-definition in-plane-switching (IPS), five-point capacitive touch screen.
Google and others petition courts stop upholding vague patents

A group consisting of Google, Dell, Facebook, Homeaway, Intuit, Rackspace, Red Hat and Zynga have filed an amicus brief with the U.S. Court of Appeals suggesting that courts stop honoring and upholding patents with purposely vague wording.

The brief covers all the legal angles, but the layman's version is that phrases like "on a mobile device" or "over the Internet" are just too broad and meaningless. These types of patents should not be granted, and existing patents using such broad terms should not be upheld. Direct from the brief:

Many computer-related patent claims just describe an abstract idea at a high level of generality and say to perform it on a computer or over the Internet. Such barebones claims grant exclusive rights over the abstract idea itself, with no limit on how the idea is implemented. Granting patent protection for such claims would impair, not promote, innovation by conferring exclusive rights on those who have not meaningfully innovated, and thereby penalizing those that do later innovate by blocking or taxing their applications of the abstract idea.

Notably absent from the group putting this forward are Microsoft and Apple, companies that have recently tried to enforce overly-broad patents against Android vendors with mixed success. Both companies have also had their share of run-ins with questionable patents, so their participation is something I would have thought was likely.

Nobody knows how effective this will be, but it's great to see it happening. If more companies are vocal about the situation, the government will have to respond in some manner. Anything to get rid of the status quo is a move forward in my book.

Pertubuhan Kongsi Gelap Internet
