Activating Windows XP

Hey guys i have a question.

I have a Dell laptop with Windows XP pro license, but i lost the WindowsXP cd.

Does the product code at the COA is the serial number to activate windows XP?

I have formatted using "ahem" CD and entered the ahem serial number.
Then i tried to change the product code to the same no at the COA but failed.

Should i call DELL now and activate using telephone?
