Focussing on the 2019-2020 anti-government protests in Hong Kong, this is the first media investigation in Malaysia to map how international online disinformation campaigns made its way to our shores and spread within local online communities.

From 2019 to 2020, Hong Kong was gripped by a series of mass anti-government protests that brought the financial hub to a standstill. The protests were triggered by fears that a controversial new bill at the time – which would have allowed extraditions to mainland China – could impact Hong Kong’s judicial autonomy and the ‘One country, Two systems’ arrangement.

In the months that followed the first rally, as peaceful marches swelled in size and escalated into violent confrontations between protesters and police, a parallel information war began playing out between anti-protest and pro-Hong Kong factions in cyberspace.

Unlike the protests themselves which were largely contained within Hong Kong, this information war soon became a disinformation race that involved both China’s state media and anti-Chinese Communist Party (CCP) forces, and which eventually spread to different countries including Malaysia.

In an eight-month-long investigation, we sought to trace the origins of false information on the protests which have triggered heated disputes among Malaysians both online and off.

Disinformation is false information that is deliberately created or disseminated with the express purpose to cause harm. Producers of disinformation typically have political, financial, psychological or social motivations.

Almost all of the misinformation detected was in Chinese, in either traditional and simplified characters. However, this observation should not be used to dismiss the possibility of disinformation campaigns targeting non-Chinese audiences in Malaysia. You can review our methodology and its limitations at the bottom of this report.

Mainstream Chinese language media in Malaysia were found to be among the main ‘importers’ of disinformation originating from China state media and other pro-CCP media in Hong Kong.

We found many news reports about the protests published by local Chinese language mainstream media were lifted whole from foreign press including those that are known to be biased and hyper-partisan and which contained elements of untruths concerning the demonstrations. Some of these 'copy-paste' reports did not credit the original publisher. However, a simple search on Google was able to bring up the original reports.

By republishing the articles (see examples below), local mainstream media did not just lend credibility to the disinformation within but amplified them to local audiences, who, in turn, shared the reports through Facebook pages viewed by their followers. Some of the biggest Facebook pages in our dataset have hundreds of thousands of followers, enabling a piece of disinformation to reach potentially millions of Malaysians within just a few hours.

JAKARTA: Over a dozen fully vaccinated doctors have died of Covid-19 in Indonesia, a medical association said Friday, as the Southeast Asian country battles a rash of severe cases in inoculated medical workers and highly infectious new virus strains.

Infections have surged in the nation of 270 million people in the past week, passing two million cases on Monday as hospital occupancy rates soared to over 75% in Jakarta and other hard-hit areas.

Nearly 1,000 Indonesian health workers have died from the virus since the pandemic started, with the country’s medical association confirming Friday that 401 doctors were among the victims – 14 of whom were fully vaccinated.

“We are still updating the data and confirming whether the other cases had been vaccinated or not,” the association’s Covid-19 mitigation head Mohammad Adib Khumaidi told journalists.

The rise of severe cases in inoculated medical workers has raised questions about the China-produced Sinovac jab, which Indonesia is heavily relying on to vaccinate more than 180 million people by early next year.

This month, more than 300 vaccinated doctors and health care workers in Central Java were found to have been infected with Covid-19, with about a dozen hospitalised.

The country is also grappling with new virus strains, including the highly infectious Delta variant first identified in India.

Clinical symptoms suggest that strain is responsible for a surge in cases in West Java, the medical association’s spokesperson for the province, Eka Mulyana, said.

“In West Java, bed occupancy rates have exceeded 90%. Some hospitals’ rates are even more than 100%,” he told reporters. “At this rate, our health system is close to collapse.”

Dozens of communities in Central Java’s Kudus regency were put under lockdown after the Delta variant was detected in local testing samples, causing a sudden spike in virus cases.

The surge has been partly blamed on millions travelling from that region across the Muslim-majority nation at the end of Ramadan last month, despite an official ban on the annual migration.

The Indonesian medical association’s Kudus representative, Ahmad Ipul Syaifuddin, has said the mass movement of people had made it next to impossible to determine where the surge began.

“We have no clue on how to trace and find the first spreader of the Delta cases because the sampling test result came out around three weeks after the mass exodus,” he said.

“My sample was among the tested sampling for the Delta variant. I have already recovered and (have) tested negative now, but I still have a cough.”

Being vaccinated doesn't mean you are safe, always practice good hygiene and wear a mask.

SINGAPORE (The Straits Times/ANN): In a rare case, a man on Wednesday (June 2) was charged in court with having consensual sex with his daughter, who was then 30 years old.

They allegedly had sexual intercourse in a flat on May 17,2019.

The man was also charged with attempted incest, after he tried to have sex with her again on Oct 20 that year.

The 56-year-old Singaporean and his daughter cannot be named due to a gag order. The court heard that the man intends to admit to his offences on June 21.

His daughter, now 32, was not charged on Wednesday, and the outcome of her case was not disclosed in court papers.

It is an offence under the law for a man to take part in consensual sexual activities with close relatives. Section 376G of the Penal Code now makes clear that a woman can also be a perpetrator.

The last reported case of consensual incest was when a man was dealt with in court in January 2011. This was the first such case in Singapore.

A plumber, who was then 47 years old, was sentenced to three years' jail for having sex with his daughter in 2008.

The daughter, who was 20 at the time of the offence, was placed on a year's probation in January 2012 for having sex with her father.

In the latest case, the court heard that the man was under a remission order when he allegedly committed the offences. He had been released from prison in 2019 for offences not stated in court documents.

As part of the order, he was supposed to stay out of trouble from May 14,2019, to Jan 11 this year. He is accused of breaching it when he allegedly had sex with his daughter.

Offenders convicted of incest can be jailed for up to five years.

If convicted of having sex with his daughter, the man could spend an additional 606 days behind bars, which is the remaining duration of his remission order. - The Straits Times/Asia News Network

A 41-year-old man in China's eastern province of Jiangsu has been confirmed as the first human case of infection with the H10N3 strain of bird flu, China's National Health Commission (NHC) said on Tuesday.

The man, a resident of the city of Zhenjiang, was hospitalised on April 28 after developing a fever and other symptoms, the NHC said in a statement.

He was diagnosed as having the H10N3 avian influenza virus on May 28, it said, but did not give details on how the man had been infected with the virus.

China Laid Out Four Point Plan for Israel-Palestin

In response to the current tense situation, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi put forward a four-point proposition:

First, ceasefire and cessation of violence is the top priority. China strongly condemns violent acts against civilians, and once again urges the two sides to immediately stop military and hostile actions, and stop actions that deteriorate the situation, including airstrikes, ground offensives, and rocket launches. Israel must exercise restraint in particular.

Second, humanitarian assistance is an urgent need. China urges Israel to earnestly fulfill its obligations under international treaties, lift all the blockade and siege of Gaza as soon as possible, guarantee the safety and rights of civilians in the occupied Palestinian territory, and provide access for humanitarian assistance. The international community must provide humanitarian assistance to Palestine, and the UN must play a coordinating role to avoid serious humanitarian disasters.

Third, international support is an obligation. The UNSC must take vigorous action on the Palestine-Israel conflict, reiterate its firm support for a "two-state solution," and push the situation to cool down at an early date.

The UNSC has failed to make a unanimous voice due to the obstruction of one certain country. China calls on the United States to shoulder its due responsibilities, adopt a fair stand, and support the UNSC in playing its due role in easing the situation, rebuilding trust, and political settlement.

China also supports the UN, the League of Arab States, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and other countries that have an important influence on the region to play a more active role.

Fourth, a "two-state solution" is the fundamental way out. China supports the two sides resuming peace talks based on a "two-state solution" as soon as possible, to establish an independent State of Palestine that enjoys full sovereignty with East Jerusalem as its capital and based on the 1967 border, and fundamentally realize the peaceful coexistence of Palestine and Israel, realize the harmonious coexistence of the Arab and Jewish nations, and realize lasting peace in the Middle East.
